This song made me analyze CLOSELY. Which is a good thing. Benny impressed me with his singing, hes quite good. And the song was really sad when you think about it. At first I had trouble hearing the lyrics, but then I understood.
Thats how I feel listening to this song. What do YOU think about this song?

This sounds like it takes place in every playground, in this case I think it's an older brother and his friends telling his little sister to go away because she's tagging along wanting to play with them , but they think that's kid stuff and don't want to play with her... Such story telling!.. that's the beauty of ABBA's music there's usually a story being told and you listen intently to see what it is .... A great journey in listening to all their music!!... Love ABBA!!!...🙂

Here's tfe lyric of Suzy Hang Around"
Suzy was nine and I was ten
Right at the time when boys like to think they're men
She used to follow us at school
We really thought that she was a little fool
And one day we said to her
We don't want to hurt you girl
    But you'd better
Look for a friend of your own, Suzy-hang-around
Better come back when you're grown, Suzy-hang-around
Nobody wants you around here and that's for sure
So get off our playground and stay away
That's all that we've got to say
    Suzy-hang-around
Suzy went home to Mama's arms
Mama said "Look, she's never done you no harm
So get off her back and let her be
Why can't you play together in harmony?"
We really didn't know what to say
But as soon as she went away
    We laughed and said
Look for a friend of your own, Suzy-hang-around
Better come back when you're grown, Suzy-hang-around
Nobody wants you around here and that's for sure
So get off our playground and stay away
That's all that we've got to say
    Suzy-hang-around
    Yes you'd better
Look for a friend of your own, Suzy-hang-around
Better come back when you're grown, Suzy-hang-around

hello again GivenToe, so nice to see you with the last reaction to "Waterloo" album
    "Sussy Hang Around" (1974)
is the only ABBA song fully composed and sung as lead vocal by Benny
his voice is nice, but he prefer the backing vocals
in my taste it is an acceptable song, 5/6pts; in my opinion it is an uneven album, where "Waterloo" stands out clearly, the winner of Eurovision
It is included in the album "Waterloo",
    ABBA's second as a group
(and the first under the official ABBA acronym that made them popular and legends)
from album "Waterloo" can I remember that You could do a reaction to the live and winner perfomances of "Waterloo"

    in english at Eurovision.

OK, Sweden is not strange. We celebrate Christmas on Christmas eve in Germany too. So much nicer to unwrap presents in the evening. To this song. I never heard it. Is that Benny singing? Never heard him that clear before. I just checked out the songtext. It is quite tough. It is about children who cut out another girl, so Suzy is looking for a friend but kids don't want her. So it is a very sad song. Singing about bullying in the 70's is remarkable, since it was not a topic at that time. But it was there. I lived through it throughout the 70' and 80's and had no help. So Benny already saw something that wasn't really in the picture back then. I like it. 👍

It was (is?) common for a young girl to want to join the older boys' gang. It is/was equally common for a gang of small boys not to want a girl (especially a younger girl) in their gang. This song sums up the unintended cruelty of young kids which they (hopefully) grow out of.
It was very brave to address this subject. I think when I was young I probably did that. Of course now I see how hurtful that was. With luck it may have changed the attitude of some of ABBA's younger fans. A brave attempt, anyway.

Saw this reaction today and felt I had to contribute with my interpretation of the song. It is probably about a brother, 10 years of age, and his sister, Suzy, 9 years old. He thinks he’s a man and doesn’t want his sister following him and his friends around. They tell her to go away and find friends of her own, teasing her. Suzy, probably crying, runs home to their mother who scolds the brother and his friends for being mean to Suzy, and they are a bit ashamed. But then they start teasing Suzy again when the mother goes away. The story is told from the grown up man’s perspective, and the way he starts off by stating that this happened "at the time when [little] boys like to think they’re men" makes me think that he now knows that he was the fool and not her.

It's kind of nice Benny sings one song as leadvocalist in ABBA's catalogue but would I want more, probably not. He also wrote the lyrics to this track and its probably the right track for Benny to sing. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Benny's voice or anything because he sings on pretty much all the other ABBA songs in some capacity, ABBA were a four voice group. For me his voice works best in the harmonies. The sound of this song sort of reminds me of groups like The Hollies, The Tremeloes and The Monkees, sort of a blend of twangy guitars. I agree with most of what you say here.

I think it's as you said: not great, not bad. A bit of an album filler, maybe? 😁 But I would have loved a few more lead vocals by Benny! He has a nice voice, even though it's a little "sharper" (I don't know the word to describe it) than Björn's. But alas, this appeared to be a once-in-a-lifetime song... 😟

Well , Benny had once mentioned the cover version that The Byrds did in the '60s for 'Turn, turn, turn'' as one of his fave songs..A really nice one with beautiful harmonies. But i really got far more than disapointed by what one of the band's ex-member had lately said on ABBA in 2018.In fact he was more than rude, his words were absolutetly hideous and disgusting!

  • @standersson6420

I think the song is suffering a bit from english not being Bennys native language. Since you are swedish you can listen to him singing Kära gamla sol (Dear old sun) from the B & B album they made before Abba.
