- ABBA - My mama said | REACTION (I am conflicted)
This song is on the Waterloo album, and I am VERY CONFLICTED about this one! I like it, but I don't. I love it but I hate it. But still it's pretty good. Perhaps just OK. I DON'T KNOW and it makes me lose my mind!
The lyrics are good aswell. But I can not make up my mind about this specific song.
Thats how I feel listening to this song. What do YOU think about this song?

It reminds me of my own mother, trying to tell me she is right and I was wrong, wished I had listened to her back then. I quite like it
We all should have listened more to out parents 🤣🙏🏻
This song has a really sort of Frenchy sound with the chord progressions. I think it's a hidden gem.
Yeah it was cool and different, yet I still havent decided if I like it 😅
Every song in this album is so different from the others. Abba always makes it interesting.
They do! Absolutely 😊
One of my favorite ABBA songs.
One of their funkier songs...really cool pearl of a song this one...like it alot,..alot...everything is as always with ABBA, top notch, vocals, arrangement, melody, its just that this happend to be one of their more funk style songs...its really good.
Very funky Indeed! 😁😎
It took me several times to listen to this song way back then, before it became my favorite song from this album. It is very different, music and lyrics. I love the the beginning and all the bells. If given a chance, this song is absolutely brilliant. And yes, listen to it more and more and let's see if you start seeing the brilliance in it too.
Yeah they tend to do that, it will probably grow on me 😊
One of my favs off the Waterloo album
I like it. When I first heard this when the album was released I liked it, because it was so different for them. Still enjoy it now.
Different Indeed! 😊
Damn...how did this cool, funky track not get released...or re-released as a single is beyond is beyond me.🤔. The bass line and guitar solo is slamin! Its not their typical sweet ABBA sound...but that's what makes it sooo interesting. Definitely cool track👍
We want more and more ABBA reaction !! Love your reactions man :)
And you shall recieve ;) Thank you so much! =)
Haven't heard this one before and I like it!
Teen rebellion.
Watch out, David! 😂
😂😂😂😂
I love this song, it's so different and so funky. I think it might be a grower, or it's just not for you. Maybe it's not the ABBA we're used to, but I love it. I feel like with this album they tried so many different genres and it's great. Älskar dina videor, även när du inte riktigt gillar en låt är du alltid väldigt respektfull!
Jag vet inte om han förstår alla denna svenska även om han svenska kopplingar,;) men jag håller med,han har en hel del matnyttigt ABBA material här..
Absolutely agree 🙏🏻 You are so right. Och tack så mycket 😊
Jag ör Svensk 😉
@@GivenToe is that a typo? Should it not be "är" not "ör"?
Hello again, so nice to see you return to ABBA reactions in "Waterloo" album
"My mama said" (1974)
This song isn't in my favorites
but it's a good song from ABBA beginning
and it's a good in your musical genre
only not included in my ABBA Top 50
(because ABBA have a lot of greatest songs)
"My mama said" is 6/7 pts to me
from this album my Top5 is:
Honey honey
Dance (while the music still goes on)
Hasta mañana
Gonna sing you my love song
and, of course, and first:
the iconic masterpiece "Waterloo"
Thanks again for your ABBA Journey
your honesty and sympathy
I wish you a great weekend
See you in the next vídeo
My best regards from
Buenos Aires Argentina
Thank you Eduardo 🙏🏻😊
ABBAMAN.....ABBA has always been so diverse in the styles of music they created esp in the early days.eventually they found thier formula and stuck with it. although mama isnt a fav track of mine i dont mind its unlike ABBA sound. again as a songwriter i applaud them for trying all types of styles and sounds . how talented they were to create so many different songs. a very onion layered type of song here.i like the la la la life part. next up on waterloo is one of my fac tracks they ever recorded. DANCE WHILE THE MUSIC STILL GOES ON. its wonderful and modulates a few times towards the end. you will really enjoy it.
Well said Gene! The ABBA onion indeed! 🧅 They defenately are awesome songwriters thats for sure! Nice, cant wait! 😊🙏🏻
I really like this song. Love the funkiness of it and the fact that it is so different. Like you suggest… please listen to it a few more times and I’m sure it will grow on you.
I will 🙏🏻😊
some wonderful 1974 R'n'B from ABBA. so good.
right on.. it's amazing (if you ask me).
One of my favourites, just brilliant ❤
It’s definitely not one of my favourites from the ‘Wa-ter-loo’ album 😉, but then you get the catchy parts and it sort of reels you in 🎣. Do you know what I mean? That’s the magic of ABBA 😁
Heheheh Wa-ter-loo indeed 😅😅😅 Yeah it reels you in, good choice of words! 😁
ABBA is bringing in da funk with this song! This is one of my favorites from the "Waterloo" album.
You're in a good mood! I've been smiling for the 10' of the video.... you know what? I'm sure that I love it! I think it's the only funky ABBA song and it's one of my favourite ones in Waterloo. When I was a teenager I understood very well that feeling of the lyrics. That was long after the release of the song. I even like the "la la la"!
Thank you GivenToe. 😘
Glad you enjoyed it Carlos! 😁 Thank you and have a great evening! 🙏🏻
I love your reactions - they're accurate reflections of that onion lol.
I've been listening to this song on and off since it was released and I'm still undecided ... keep it up David 😊
Thank you very much Michael! 🙏🏻😊
Love the work you put into editing your videos and your reactions; honest and entairning.. Anyone can stare and listen and say that's it till next time. Regarding Waterloo, not near their best album, but it's entertaining.
Thank you so much, that means very much to me 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Glad to see you continue your ABBA journey. This is a song that grows on you the more you listen to it. If you want to see an amazing live guitar solo the back to back performance of Does Your Mother Know/Hole In Your Soul Live@Wembley is a must see, you wont be disappointed.
Indeed! And I will continue on =) Sounds cool!
First
This is an interesting song...in a time ABBA tries to find their music style.
Yay! Yes so it seems 🙏🏻😁
I've always liked this song. The lyrics may sound a little harsh, but as you said, it's from our daily lives. Who among us didn't have an argument with our parents when we were teenagers? Didn't we often think not-so-nice things about them in our minds even though we didn't mean it, of course? And then, when one is a parent, one sees the lyrics differently and might get conflicted. That's one of the ABBA magics.
Love your facial expressions though 🤣
Very true! You are so right 🙏🏻 thanks 🤣
ABBA are legends and so are you Mr GT...love the facial hair!😉😊😘
Well thank you Nigel 😎🔥😁
What a gem of a record ❤️
You need to listen to it again, and I think you will get it then.
I will 🙏🏻😊
I think "Honey honey", "Hasta mañana" and "Dance while the music still goes on" are the best songs of the album and obviously with a proper ABBA style. Of course "Waterloo" is the most recognisable song in it.
"Gonna Sing You My Love Song" belongs to my favourites, too.
@@Lisa-M Oh I forgot to mention it. It is another good one of the album.
Exactly what I consider
Waterloo at the Top
follow by
Honey honey
Dance (while the music still goes on)
and the girls numbers
Hasta mañana
Gonna sing you my love song
I agree. And I would add ¨Gonna Sing You My Love Song¨
Whether it’s good or bad is subjective. Not one of my favourites but it does show Abba tried many different styles particularly in the early part of their albums. Love your reactions GivenToe, your facial expressions are priceless..
Yeah it defenately shows how they were trying back and forth. Pretty cool to hear it actually! Haha thank you 🙏🏻🤣
Your conflict is understandable David.
I felt that way too when l first heard this song. But l played the album so many times that l completely grew to love it. In hindsight, you can get a glimpse of how Bjorn & Bennys' compositions were later to become more theatrical as in Chess and the Trilogy on Abba...the Album.
Cannot wait for you to experience what's to come! Thankyou! Ciao bello! 🤗😎
Thank you for being so understanding Eleonora 😅 Yeah these songs has a tendency to do that. To grow on you. Thank you! And have a wonderful day ❤️
For me, this song is one of my favorites from the Waterloo album. That being said, it took a while for this song to grow on me.
Classic ABBA, it grows on you after a few listens ;) Its a kind of magic
I like it a lot, it´s great!
YESSSSSS,like it,hate it or confused, this IS ABBA ,they take you down the side streets of music occasionally , they are not afraid to try different styles, very, very different styles ,but you know, they always, and I mean ALWAYS, create shear perfection they nail it each and every time.I was 14yo when I first heard this song on my Waterloo album and it seemed strange, but as I got older and my music tastes matured this song, this very song with its bassy rifts and funky feel with beautiful expressive and emotional lyrics ,hooked me .Sometimes you need to walk down side streets to get the full life experience, and ABBA will do that ALL the time, love this song ,love the ABBA journey a VOYAGE of discovery. Thankyou David love your reactions love your channel.
Thank you so much for that comment Michael 😊🙏🏻
This was a period when ABBA were trying to find a sound so they tried out a lot of different styles. They have tried Rock, Jazz, Funk, there is even a reggae song. But to me, this was a really a gem. I just loved the bass in this song. A masterpiece..
Hello
It’s one of those few ABBA songs I haven’t listened to often but when i do it’s ok but I’m afraid I still can’t really get into it as much as I do with most other ABBA songs 😏 I agree good lyrics and it is funky but it’s missing something not sure what 😉
Yeah I feel the same =) Not sure what it is but hey, this is whats so fun about ABBA. You never know what youre gonna get and I love surprises =)
It`ll grow on you. Trust me. Personally, I`m just so happy that FINALLY SOMEBODY reacted to this song. I was confused decades ago the first time I heard this song. But very soon, it became one of my favorite songs. It is so different. It`s kind a dark but funky. Somehow it just works.
This is not the first reaction to this song. 😉 Dereck did it too, long ago.
@@Lisa-M There should be many more.
@@tuijakarttunen9164 Yes, also from some other ABBA songs. There is for example only one reaction to "I Wonder" until now. 😢
@@Lisa-M Yes, another great song. I would add I`m a marionette on that list.
@@tuijakarttunen9164 I'm sure GivenToe will do reactions to these songs. We just have to wait until his ABBA - The Album reactions. 😁
Njae, inte en av deras bästa😳 Kom på mej själv med att bara lyssna på basgången😂 Gillar dina miner iaf😎🙏🏻
Hahaha ja det är lätt att fastna i den 🤣 Tack 😅
This song is from 1974 and at least 5 years ahead of its time. This kind of funky disco songs were popular at the end of the 70s.
I really like your review of this strange and odd thing. This one will take place 75 or similar on my ABBA-top list. There are so many unundrerstandable songs in RingRing & Waterloo.
Thank you! =)
I like it, it is funky and different, yep I like it 😁🙂
I don't remember this one at all, although this was my first music record. I probably didn't think it was that good then 😅 Although I was only 5 years old if it was released in 1974? I guess that's to blame 😂
I guess so yes 🤣🤣😅🙏🏻
A bit of Stevie Wonder funk is the best way to sum up this song. Definitely one of the stand out tracks on the album.
Hooray!! The tank top's back. It's the reason I watch. lol
hahahah XD Thanks! There will be more tank tops in the future I assure you cause it's my favourite piece of clothing lol XD
'Waterloo' album and its follower ABBA were very diverse in the styles of songs they tried. From pop to 'glam metal' and funk. One song in their follower '"HEYHEY HELLEN'(a song about female independence) is Deep Purple influenced with hard rock guitar riffs,a funky interlude and some...gospel-ish backing vocals all way through the second half of the song and after..Btw why not doing 2 songs each time. You could easily spot the splendid variety of each song side by side.(he!he!i'm in a hurry, am i?)
Hello there Alexio! Yeah I bet they differ a lot. Well, I want to keep this going for as long as possible, dragging it out a lot you know? ;) Lasts longer hahjah
@@GivenToe Do as you wish it's fine by me.
funky funky ..outstanding song .....
Come on this track is the beginning of classic Abba
It does takes time to get used to this song 🤣. and i guess there will be a lot more songs coming up that it takes time for them to love or like them. Let yourself be surprised by it, my friend
Its always an exciting ride! You NEVER know what youre gonne get! =)
I have to say that I do actually like this song. I will admit that I don't go out of my way to listen to it regularly, but when I'm listening to the whole Waterloo album and this song comes on, I do enjoy it. It's not in my top 10 ABBA songs but it wouldn't be in my bottom 10 either.
This song was rather confronting, especially back then. Abba was a band that was accessible to the whole family and then this pops up. We even had a discussion about this at family dinner, my Mother so identified with it and it gave her a chance to talk about how she was coping with having teenagers to care for. Listen to it a couple of times, it will grow on you.
I never was a friend of funky music, yet I like this song, just because it's so different, so unique - for ABBA.
Many people might have problems with this stuff, because it comes straight from the lows of the boring everyday life. Everyone expects something special from ABBA and now becomes the story of every adolescence life. Who hasn't experienced the harassment about ones haircut, clothes, choice of friends and general behavior? Who hasn't heard: "As long as you put your feet under my dining table, you do as I want you to do!"?
That's not the "real" ABBA-stuff, full of enjoyment of life (Dancing Queen) or tragic and sorrow (The winner takes it all - I could be that woman) - so for some this is straight irritation at first listening.
Totally understandable 👍🏻
What's there to be conflicted about? This is an awesome song about teenage rebellion and family conflict. Love the funky bass line, the synths, the jazzy guitar bridge. And it's a fun little song....play it again. Loud.
Hejehe will do!
I like it but it's not one of my favourites. I think you will enjoy the next one ("Dance (While The Music Still Goes On)") more though it could be that you know it because it's not soooo unknown. At least here it's often played in the radio. After that comes "Honey Honey" which you know for sure. And then "Watch Out" is next. I expect a similar reaction to this one as to "My Mama Said". 🤣😆
Of those, I heard Honey, Honey. It will be interesting indeed 😅🤣
Dance while music still goes on is my all time favourite ABBA song ( I think there could be 2 keys changes in there) followed closely by Another town Another train.
Absolutely love "Dance"! Those key changes are so uplifting that you just wanna... dance!
Thanks for your conflicted reaction GivenToe. Personally i just enjoy the relaxed funky feel of the song, the use of instruments that create that sound and the girls voices. Still it is not a great song, but better than some from this period, such as the terrible king kong song.
Thank you! Yeah I am pretty conflicted about this one. But as you say, a funky feel indeed! King Kong song was….special? 😅🙏🏻
@@GivenToe special indeed 🤯
As an instrumental track, this would be a good song. I could almost imagine a different artist sampling it for one of their compositions.
The song falls apart when the lyrics are added - they make about as much sense as the ones from the song Dum Dum Diddle (ie not a lot).
Having said that, they were still a young band - we've all released work we thought was good then looked back at it years later and cringed! 😁
First time i hear it
What was this song? hehehe
First time a have to say that i don´t like so much
I'm with you... I'm not sure how to react to this... it's clearly going for a kind of "soft-rock-70s-funk" that's so NOT Abba... but another example of them trying out new genres and styles. For what it's worth, I quite like it, and it's catchy, but I would never put it on an Abba playlist alongside other tracks from their early albums, as it's not really their sound. There are great singles and tracks on the first two albums, but personally I don't think they hit their stride until SOS on the next album. Cheers for another reaction... always love em!
Well said Michael 👍🏻 And thank you!
@@GivenToe thanks man. To be honest, I'd forgotten this song, and I think it's really interesting, so I'm pleased I heard it again.
We are all beginners...
First time I've heard this song. But I must say I don't like it.Sorry Abba , but you have done so much wonderful music!! 🎵🎶♥️💕❤️
You cant love everything, and thats ok 😊🙏🏻❤️
Ring Ring & Waterloo were albums of experimentation for the group. They would not gain a level of consistency till the next album- Abba-where they more found their sound. Waterloo & Ring Ring have their clunkers(bad songs) and B&B have agreed on reflection. My Mama Said is different and one of their experimental tracks. Is it any good? Neither bad or really good, but just very low on the totem pole of Abba songs.
Not the best lyrics, but a catchy tune. One of the highest points from Waterloo!
Waiting for the next one! You'll be surprised.
It takes a while to appreciate this song….on the surface it initially appears rather banal but upon further listens you begin to deeply appreciate the musicality, if not sheer virtuosity of the musicians. It is one of the sadly very few tracks where it sounds like the boys and the studio musicians just let go and got down their with their funky bad asses. The girls show up eventually but it’s not about them…….it’s about the groove. Its about ……well I can’t use the phrase “letting go” because ABBA had a butt-cheek clenching obsession with perfection, but how about “enjoyment”? It sounds like the found a groove, got down and boogied to it, flipped a a switch and said “that’s the edit, we got it!” This is what I like most about this song. The didn’t strangle it to death
It's like they were trying to make some sly 007 theme song lol
hehehehe
The name Fred is a clue.
Okay? 😅
I like this long is different is the vida real
My advice is that you dont get hung up by the lyrics...its the song itself, the melody and vocals that are the main part here,as with all songs...I think the lyrics are very good as well..even as they are from the viewpoint of a teenager or something like that..but who cares..This funky tune can compete, and compete very well with the best of funk from any artists from America, the birth country of funk as I see it...
When it got to the guitar solo my partner said - you watching a porno? 😆.
I can understand how you're conflicted tho - I'm.not sure whether I like it or not.
hahahahaha oh my! 😂😂😂 Yeah its a special song, hard to make up my mind about it.
This is actually one of my favorite songs off the Waterloo album. Other favorites are Watch Out, Sitting In A Palm Tree, Gonna Sing You My Love Song and Dance (While The Music Still Goes On). Hasta Manana is the one I would skip when listening to this album. I just don’t like it.
I always skip King Kong Song and Sitting In The Palm Tree. ^^ But I like What About Livingstone and Suzy-Hang-Around, both of them weren't mentioned yet here in the comments regarding the Waterloo album.
The song is definitely different and not their usual style. Definitely not a favourite...
One of my least favourite ABBA tracks in my all time bottom five.
Yeah, they cant all be great right? 😊
