Its Björn Ulvaeus, the lyric guy and main male lead of the two ABBA guys that sings here. The more you guys listen to ABBA music the easier it will get to locate who sings..they did many types of genres and liked to experiment abit vocally as well...I LOVE both Björns and Bennys vocals..that I always felt were underrated in ABBA...

The king kong song! Definitely back to some of their more playful early works there. Not their best early stuff, but interesting in terms of their development in learning regardless and a fun song and sound. I always enjoy it, not all music has to be serious to be enjoyable.
I reccomend Voulez-Vous by ABBA for an energetic dance track when you feel like one :)) There's a fun music video, but also there's a very brightly skin tight costume live show that's fun to watch. The Album version of Voulez-Vous is longer and has some more parts to it than some radio versions.

    • @herrbonk3635
      @herrbonk3635 2 года назад +2

Perhaps not so much about learning. I belive they were already producers for other artists at this point. I see this as them playing around and experimenting with all those (more or less) cheesy styles that was already out there. Both in UK/US and at home in Europe. Very much like pretty much every Eurovision, pop and schlager artist still do today. (Not least here in Sweden, where this kind of "funny music" is on the tv and in the parks all the time. Loved by all kinds of people, except me :)
But sure, they also wanted to find a sound that was commercially viable all over the world, especially in the rich anglo saxon world. However, it soon turns out that their actual personal tastes were one of the best guides for that to happen, and that degree of "sincerity" was probably one of the keys to their success.

    • @Tom_McMurtry
      @Tom_McMurtry 2 года назад +1

@@herrbonk3635 Thanks for the beautiful write up. I sort of take playing around and experimenting as learning. I'm not saying it from a bad at music point of view. They were already fantastic musicians by this point. Also learning together how to best operate as a group.

Glad you took my advice….fun, wasn’t it? The King King Song is probably the most polarizing ABBA song of all time with people either loving it or hating it. Count me in the former as it’s always been in my top 3. Bjorn is the primary vocalist, getting guttural and gritty with his singing…..if you like this affected style you can hear more of it in “Watch Out” (straight acid rock) or “Rock Me” (Saloon style semi-rock). Of course both boys are doing the gorilla grunting background vocals during the choruses. Would you believe they even played this song live on several early occasions during their parks and summer festivals tour in Scandinavia? If you are looking for another fun song on the opposite side of the spectrum try “I am the City”……one of the very last songs they ever recorded before their 40 year hiatus. It was meant for the follow up to “The Visitors” but got put in the shelves instead. It was written and recorded at the very beginning of the 80s New Wave phase. I wouldn’t call it New Wave myself but it is very electronic, syncopated, precise, and erotically robotic. I think it would have been a massive hit. The counterpoint observation is that like the other recordings made at this time (Day Before You Came, Under Attack, You Owe Me One) it makes no use whatsoever of the girls vocal ranges and abilities. The vocals are highly modulated and robotic. Doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment, but none the less a curiosity. And before anyone calls me out…..yes…..Cassandra is an exception to this comment.

Well, I was looking at a movie on the TV last night
Then I had a very funny notion, yeah
I really had to write a song about it
And then I'm gonna sing it with my rock 'n' roll band
And I bet that people gonna like it, yeah
I know that everybody's gonna shout it
    About a dreadful, mighty killer
    A big, black, wild gorilla
    King Kong song
    Won't you sing along?
Listen to the music and it couldn't go wrong

Can't you hear the beating of the monkey tom-tom?
Listen to the rhythm of the King Kong song
Now we can make the jungle out of any old place
We can make gorillas out of people, yeah
Well, who can tell a monkey from a monkey
So people get together gonna have a good time
Everybody listen to the music, yeah
The song we're gonna sing is kinda funky
So let your arms hang down and waddle all around
    Like a dreadful, mighty killer
    A big, black, wild gorilla
    King Kong song
    Won't you sing along?

Its a bit of glamrock fluff from the early days of ABBA when they were experimenting with different genres on their first two or three albums. Personally its okay but not a big favourite for me. The ABBA guys really dislike it for a variety of reasons. Apparently when it was performed on their 1974/75 tour in a packed concert hall where a large proportion of the frount rows were record executives, one of the women started singing in the wrong place, where there was supposed to be an instrumental break. Apparently half the band followed the singing, the other half played it the way it should have been. It ended in complete chaos with one musician stopping afer another. Bjorn said it was the most embarrassing moment of his professional career. Lets just say, Its probably not going to be played by ABBA's ABBAtars when their live shows begin!

It's definitely Abba, and as soon as the women do their bit it lifts the song to a new level.
I think there's a social message in here:
"Now we can make the jungle out of any old place
We can make gorillas out of people, yeah
Well, who can tell a monkey from a monkey"
"We can make the jungle out of any old place". Are they saying that people will follow whatever trend is current - making a 'jungle' any place?
"We can make gorillas out of people". Perhaps suggesting that people are easily led, easily persuaded to behave in particular ways.
"Who can tell a monkey from a monkey?" This might suggest that in their desire to be like the crowd, people lose their individuality.
It could also be applied to politics. Think about it as the mid-term elections come up!

I remember buying this album after ABBA had become huge, a couple of year after it was released, and I was really shocked by this track and another track called Watch Out. Really funny but weird (and for a kid: a bit scary) attempts to be a rock group. Even though it's considered an early attempt to experiment, ABBA did actually include a rock-ish song on most of their later albums as well, e.g. Hole in Your Soul (from The Album from 1977), On and On and On (from Super Trouper 1980) etc. But this one definitely is - well - particular :-)

To better understand where the creativity in ABBA came frome, one needs to listen to the records which were recorded by their tone ingenieur Michael B Tretow. All ABBA's did some voice parts on his recordings. It seems that in the years 1973 to 1975 no sound or musical direction was too strange to not being tried out in the Studio. Some "experiments" made it onto the first 3 ABBA albums before ARRIVAL marks the step to pure Pop perfection.
Hubba Hubba Zoot Zoot by M.B.Tretow may be a good example...

Early ABBA, it has Beach Boys vibes! They were still experimenting different genres trying to find their sound. Another unexpected ABBA song I would suggest is The Piper, but if you want more famous songs, you should definitely check out Voulez-Vous, it’s a banger!

Yes indeed.B's+B's backing vocal echoes in the chorus were def Beach Boys inspired.

I think it's one of the worst they did, very silly😂 but gotta admit it's hella catchy. it's Bjorn who's in lead here, remember benny only sang as a lead once (suzy hang around) and that never happened again, ps. Marisa I'm gonna miss ur inputs, come back sooner please.

Oh, it’s actually not too bad when you listen to some of their other early stuff. ABBA was not consistently great until their fourth album. The first three had a few good songs and the rest were either merely okay or downright awful. KKS is actually pretty fun. Campy AF but it’s catchy and enjoyable.

@@graphiquejack The self-titled 3rd album 'ABBA' (1975) and the next two, 'Arrival (1976) and 'The Album' (1977) were ABBA at their peak IMO. That '75 album was like a greatest hits compilation: 'SOS', 'Mamma Mia', 'So Long', 'Bang-A-Boomerang', 'I've Been Waiting For You' are pop perfection and quite a diversity in styles. 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do I Do' was top-15 hit on U.S. Billboard and I'd rank it the 6th best song on the album. 'Hey Hey Helen' and the instrumental 'Intermezzo No. 1' are pretty good too!

      Absolutly agree with you
"ABBA" third album is fantastic (+7pts)
      "S.O.S," is the masterpiece
"Mamma Mía" is a banger pop
"I've been waiting for you" is gorgeous
      "I do I do I do I do I do" is lovely
      "So long" is powerful
      "Bang a Boomerang" is funny
      "Intermezzo No 1" is amazing
      "My mama said" is interesting
      "Tropical Loveland" is nice
      "Rock me" is good

and I don't like the meddley)

ABBA started with PoP-Schlager oneside, but experimented with different music styles. King King Song represented the Glam Rock 1974; British band as Sweet, Suzie Quatro, Slade .... dominated the Europe Singles Charts all in terrible outfits (?!? today for smiling). As David Stevens wrote another similar song is Watch Out; absolutely different is the R'n'B My Mama Said; poppy and catchy are Hasta Manana or Dance (While The Music Still Goes On). Waterloo was the first international hit (won the ESC 1974), the banger. Abba innonence; ended SOS and with the album Arrival: the lyrics were more profound and the music got bridges, became more interesting (over 3 minutes except on Voyage, sadly, 6 are very short, some of them for me not finished or ??? - dear Mr Composer).
For me it's estonished and admirable which development ABBA had done during 2-3 years in the middle of 70s. Till the end they had take the risk with different music styles, partly not rewarded by all old fans (Summer Night City - Voules Vous - Gimme (yes even after years in the internet a great banger, but many young users don't find the brilliant long version; why ABBA don't make the bass and the synthi louder and more effective; with clever promotion I'm sure the song will climb the charts again ?!?).

Hello and Happy Easter I wish you! 🐓🐔 To be honest, I do not think this song is particularly good. As an Abba fan, it's boring to write this. The song seems to be a rushed job recorded at the last minute to complete their album. And it's not like Abba who strives to always deliver good and wonderful songs. But I forgive them. Everything else is so good with their records! Have a nice weekend, dear friends 🐥🤩💛🙆🎉🥳
