This method works with Intel Macs early 2007 - early 2009 (make sure you have a copy of Mac OS X Leopard called universal binaries for both intel & PowerPC Processors), and format the usb drive as following: Partition Map: GUID Partition Table (for Intel EFI Boot) Format File System: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Size: 8GB USB Drive (at least).
Hey i just wanted to comment to thank you for making this video. I was totally under the impression you couldn't boot from USB on a PPC Mac but this worked flawlessly on my MDD G4. I'd been procrastinating cause it seems impossible to buy blank DL DVDs in small quantities locally these days so this saved me a lot of hassle.
Best method ever. I was able to install Leopard easily (though it was a really long wait) on my PowerBook G4 Alu and my last gen G4 Mac mini 1.5 Ghz. Thank you, @Action Retro
@@fspeshalxo69 Leopard image is available here: macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-osx-mac-os-10-ppc . But to be honest, I wasn't successful to boot from USB prepared in the way as this guide shows. sooo...trying to do this. I have a MacBook Pro (mid-2015) running 10.15 and I want to install Leopard onto an older MacBook Pro (mid-2009). I've got a USB drive with JUST enough room and the Leopard Install DVD iso from - well, you know where ;-) - and I'm doing the steps but I get an error when I initiate the restore: -------------------------- Restoring “Leopard” from “Mac OS X Install DVD.iso” Validating target... Validating source... Could not validate source - Invalid argument The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 22.) Operation failed… ----------------------------- Any ideas?
Maybe this could be an alternative to installing Sorbet Leopard i.e. boot into the installer then use the disk utility to restore the Sorbet Leopard image to the internal HDD. This way, there's no need to enter target disk mode which is very difficult to do these days because it's very hard to find a thunder bolt 2 to FireWire 800 dongle.
thanks this worked. key is to use Apple Partition Map and then hit RESTORE from ISO... but problem is MacBook 5,1 won't boot from it. it seems ok the USB though.
So all was going well until i booted from the bootable usb but it took me to the regular screen asking me to install from the server and i can't do that. What went wrong
Try Balena Etcher: www.balena.io/etcher/ I've used this in the past to burn DMGs to USB for Macs. Just ignore the warning about "no partition table" when you go to burn it. I haven't done it with Leopard specifically, but I have with Tiger.
I love the video. I'm assuming you would set the partition scheme to GUID if you were creating a bootable Leopard USB drive for an Intel based Mac? I'm curious, why do you need to create 2 partitions? Does it need to be 7.7G, or can it be larger if you wanted to be cautious, e.g., 8 G?
Yeah, you’d be right. Also, OS X Leopard was intended to be installed onto a Dual-Layer DVD which is read as having 7.7 Gigabits. That means if you were doing OS X Tiger, it would have been 4.3 Gigabits since it’s meant to be installed onto a regular DVD in comparison
It's not the videos dude. Some USB drives may not be compatible, and that's the way it goes. Your PPC Mac might also be using USB 1.1, which was _a long time ago_ so some compatibility quirks are to be expected, especially from the limited USB stack in the boot ROM. Regardless, this method *does* work to image an ISO onto a flash drive, or HDD, or SD card. It's up to you to find a drive that'll work though, and you probably won't know until you try. So just have a few available and try them all. Or, just burn a CD, and use a USB CD-ROM drive to boot from. That works too. It's how I boot-strapped the SSD in my G4 Cube when I thought the internal drive was going bad.
@@nickwallette6201 I'd agree with you, if it weren't for one thing: the USB drive I'm using is recognized and shows up... when I put 10.4 on it. With 10.5 put on using the same method, it fails to show up. Really not sure what's up with that.

It was not successful for me... got to the point of executing it with source being the ISO file, and the destination being Leopard, and it gives me a "restore failure. Cound not find any scan information. The source image needs to be image scanned before it can be restored" then I read on a forum to go to the Images and scan for for restore. So, I have a 17in iMac G4 1Ghz, running 10.4.11, I've followed the guide as close as I could with my own leopard iso. But when I boot of the USB stick it will show the apple logo for about a minute then tell me: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." Is there something I'm missing, how do I fix this?

Same thing here with a PowerBook G4 12". I did everything explained in the video, but the USB drive won't show up in boot menu. Also clicking on the install icon in the leopard partition will restart the mac, but with standard boot procedure. I tried to use Open Firmware prompt to check if the disk was properly mounted, but it could not be found (more info about that here : ben-collins.blogspot.com/2010/08/booting-your-ibook-g4-from-usb-stick.html ). I will try with another USB stick, to see if it changes anything.
Charles Kachelmann I updated my post, I recommend that app balenaEtcher aka etcher, or something similar. and you can make the usb on another computer besides the g4

@@lurice0 Thanks for the tip.
I didn't have to use balenaEtcher as my second try with a new USB stick was successful :-) So it can matter after all.
For info, the 1st USB stick was a noname whereas the second was a SONY.
Oh yeah, I love Etcher. If you have that problem on disk utility, make sure you selected "erase destination" when doing the restore.
Action Retro i extended my first comment above. I don't know what's going wrong
Not work on iMac G4
Will this work on intel iMac 4,1?
power pc Macs can't boot from usb like this, you have to hold down some keys and then write some commands
WHAT IF I HAVE 10.1 OS X
when I hold down the option key the computer doesn't boot. Any suggestions?
same thing happened to me, i recommend trying to hold down the crtl key instead of the option key because that worked for me
I held down the ctrl key but only got a flash of blue. Then, it started up normally
I download 10.6.8 but is not ISO format its DMG what i do
@@DistrosProjects Not worth. If you don't have an Intel processor in your laptop don't even try. You need a minimum 2GB of RAM and 100GB of free space.
can create the bootable usb from windows 10?
No, for any macOS bootable USB, you will need to use macOS to create the drive.
I would love to find a link where I can download a copy of TenFive Tube for my older G4 and G5 Macs So I can watch youtube on them.
Great videos. I have a G4 1.67 powerbook in mint condition and I had though of trying an SSD upgrade but I have MS so that's not possible.
I can still cope with downloading and install software though and would love to have a go .If I can find it.
Thank you Jeremy! Here's a link: www.macintoshrepository.org/30382-tenfivetube-powerpc-youtube-browser-and-player
@@ActionRetro May thanks I will archive the video and have a look later.
What if you don’t have a second MacBook what can you do then
I think TransMac is the best solution in Windows, there's a 15 day free trial: www.acutesystems.com/scrtm.htm
@@ActionRetro late response but does it work the same on chrome computers

Please help to make Mac OS X Leopard bootable USB on windows pc
On Windows, I'd recommend using Etcher to write the image to USB. Just ignore any warning about it not being bootable, and it should be fine. Here's a link: www.balena.io/etcher/
@@ActionRetro I have made bootable leopard usb using transmac . But I am not able to boot using open firmware on imac g4
@@asifnazir7783 Try flashing the image to USB using Etcher instead: www.balena.io/etcher/
Anyone try "dd" from Linux to a USB thumb-drive, using the MacOSX Leopard .ISO file? And boot from that? I will try it myself... :D
Can't make an install usb without the password
