  • Over on the MacRumors forums, user Wicknix has just released an update to his TenFiveTube app, which lets PowerPC Macs running 10.5 Leopard browse and watch RUclips! But how well does it work?
To find out, we'll upgrade our 867 Mhz PowerBook G4 Titanium from Tiger to Leopard, and give it a spin. This PowerBook is the oldest and slowest officially supported Mac laptop on Leopard, so will this actually be usable? Let's find out!

I used my G4 Mac from 2005 to 2011 and then I retired it to the pasture. Besides that the PowerPC was basically abandoned, the main reason I gave it up was that 1GB of RAM was never sufficient for OS-X and my particular Mac could not be expanded beyond 1GB. Sure, they came out with models that sported 2GB, etc., but mine was hobbled to 1GB. Not quite as useless as the original 128K Mac, but that and the slow harddisk got to be excruciating. So 2GB and SSD storage would make it something that could be used today.

I think older computers are more usable than we think. I'd rather type a long email on a 12" PowerBook G4 than a modern Mac, and it would handle that just fine!

I think as long as you are fighting with the polymer YT UI, it's not going to be pretty.
Am getting traction on a MDD G4 dual 1.0Ghz running Tiger with TFF and the legacy uBO 1.16.4.20 - with the cosmetic filters setup on everything not relevant (also ticking the box for Dan Pollock's hosts file in the filters list) User Agent Switcher 0.73 from Chris Pederick and the UserAgent list from the techpatterns forums.
At Techpatterns, go to -> Browser issues in general -> Firefox UserAgent Switcher list. I set the user agent to report as any older browser - (SeaMonkey 2.7.1 seems to work best) that cannot handle polymer and it defaults to the older layount after youtube puts up an 'Update your Browser', but you can ignore that crabbing and it loads the old style and plays videos so much better.
One of the other ancialllry issues I've notcied with polymer is that some older browsers that can run it, won't load the comment reply field - this has been changing over the last few weeks and now one of the browsers I use - SeaMonkey 2.53.1 - is no longer even displaying the comments in the new UI in light or dark mode, so having the UserAgent Switcher - even on the newest release of the odd browsers, is getting around whatever funny business google is up to.
