- This video was filmed prior to when Russia invaded Ukraine and before we started hosting a Ukrainian family. We wanted to post our video ("Touching Experience Hosting 5 Ukrainians (emotional) | WE LOVE THEM. Thank you for your donations" LINK) before our Sicily, Italy series (3 vlogs) to share our thoughts and experience with you. Hosting them has been an honor. We love these individuals and have been touched by them. If you have the means, we encourage to open up your hearts and home to help these beautiful people.
We fly from Germany to Italy to experience warmer temperatures and new foods! :) We found a lot more than that though! In this video we are in Sicily for the first time ever! Sicily is a massive island in the south of Italy, the largest island in the Mediterranean! Our first stop is the capital city and ancient city, Palermo!
On our first day there we noticed a lot of cultural differences & were surprised to see how different things were compared to Germany and the U.S! Sicily is a very energetic & happening place-you won't want to miss this video! :)
Places we went in in this video:
-Piazza San Domenico Town Square
-Strolled down Via Maqueda (see Quattro Canti, Fontana Pretoria, etc. Basically everything along this street is incredible to see, but crowded! :)...)
-Mercato del Capo: Via Cappuccinelle, ., 90138 Palermo PA, Italy
-Watched the sunset at Foro Italico. Address: Foro Italico Umberto I, 90133 Palermo PA, Italy
-Beautiful city park was called Villa Giulia. Address: Via Lincoln, 90123 Palermo PA, Italy
-Chicken Takeaway restaurant was called Antica Gastronomia Polleria Marino. Address: Via Roma, 57, 90133 Palermo PA, Italy
-Carbonara Takeaway restaurant was called Aglio Olio e Pepe. Address: Via Vittorio Emanuele, 119/121, 90133 Palermo PA, Italy

By the way . did you know there is a connection between Palermo and Germany : In the middle ages , for a short term , Friedrich der Zweite ,( von Hohenstaufen, "Stupor mundi"), emperor of Germany made Palermo capital of his empire and so capital of Europe, and until now , some people of Palermo still put roses on his tomb in the cathedral .
Thanks for sharing! We had no idea that was even a relation.

@@OurStorytoTell believe me! there is a lot of story to tell about sicily and in particular about palermo, it's a place full of history that unfortunately need to be known to the world! Help Us! all the tourist when they hear the name of Italy thinks that italt it's only Florence,Rome,Venice,Naples or Milan...but there is lot and a lot of beautiful unknown places to be discover in Italy! and sicily is the gem!
@@rufus2o Arabs? Arabs were bloody invasor, Friedrich von Hohenstaufen was half Sicilian and half German. So, WTF are you talking?
I'm visiting Palermo in two weeks and this video has made me SO excited ✈🙏🏼🥰💓
I know many Americans travel to Paris when thinking about Europe but Italy is just the place to be if you want all the vibes, amazing food, great people and a lot of relaxing. It is also very unique because of the differences between the north and the south.
Agreed! We love Italy and can’t wait to explore more of the country. So many delicious foods and colors and things to explore! Although we still haven’t been to France so it’s hard to compare yet.
Food in Italy is very bad actually. Portugal has the Best food from all over the world. Italy is only Italian food and it's not that good. The pizza is awful in most places in Italy. Best pizza I ever had was in Mérida Yucatan Mexico. My favorite country in Europe would have to be Spain.
Thanks guys for coming to Palermo and shooting this video. You are a beautiful family ✨💚
there is a reason why Italy has been more or less the top holiday destination for decades since the 50's alongside Spain and Austria.... but Italy got it all. Though of course northern and southern Italy are different... but la dolce vita is everywhere... the food, the arts, the architecture... gelato. We Germans enjoy it for holiday and go back to our orderly more sober German daily life, dreaming of the next holiday stay lol...
You Say:"The Northern and southern Italy are different" Why?
The only different it's the sun and the Sea.
I'm Sicilian ❤️ Palermo✌️
we Italians are jealous of your country atleast it functions, its better going to us for vacation and working in germany trust me
@@Flavia.amoretto - from my experience the northern Italians are much more reserved. I love the fun and the twinkle in the eye of the southern Italians.
Thank for the wonderful video :) Palermo is my city and you’ve created a beautiful portrait of it ♥️ thank you for showing the world the power of my city :) happy you had a good time ♥️
Thanks Giulia ❤️. We loved Palermo and the time we spent there. Such a special place :).
Palermo looks beautiful, I've been wanting to go for ages! And those cannoli and ice cream at the end look incredible!
So tasty! We hope you’re able to make it there someday!
Cannoli agree
But the trash in the streets is also a desaster….
Just discovered your channel! I love this video. Sicily is so incredibly special and the people are amazing and friendly. I love how family oriented they are and just how welcoming and kind they are! So so much to see and do 💕

Aww thanks so much! How fun you are living in Sicily! That would be a dream! We are in Bavaria in Germany right now 😊
What a great video, showcasing the vibes and scenery in Palermo, loved it.
From my time of travelling with a very energetic toddler, Italy was one of the best places! I could finally sit at a restaurant or cafe and let the little guy roam as everybody sitting around was just so enclined to entertain him and not seeing it as an "invasion of privacy", it was definitely very relaxing both for Mom and Kiddo!
Oh yes we can definitely understand that! Thanks so much for the comment. 😊
Italy is the best!! The food, the culture, weather, people, language...🤗
We love Italy!
Love, love watching Willa grow up! Interesting differences of the cultures. Y'all are getting to try some great foods!!

I think one of the most adorable things is when toddlers try to do what their parents are doing, like pushing a stroller.
Oh yes she definitely does!
OMG. Willia is adorable!

Cool kid. Very smart.
Thanks for watching!
Hahaha... if not spicy, I would call lemons sour and not bitter... ;-). By the way, you all three are gorgeous - and especially Willa! :-) How nice, that you enjoyed Sicily / Italy so much!
That’s true, sour would have been a better way describe it! 😊 Thank you Tom!
Well, such a lemon has an intense taste, so she called it spicy ;-)
Well, it makes sense. But of course there are better words like sour ;-)
Italy is the friendliest country for children. They love bambinis.
We definitely noticed and appreciated it. 😊
Hello! Great video, loved how you presented Palermo and I am so excited to also go in the summer. As a college student, I must ask where you bought the chicken and potatoes from, seems like food is good there and also for a very good price. Also, what other places to eat you recommend. Thank you in advance!

@@wcficionado7666 there are 2 main reason:
First one in Italy there's no minimum wages, even if you're highly educated (master degree) you will work for 500€ per month working almost 50 hours a week.

Great video, great footages. Villa is getting cuter on each video. Thank you for sharing your experiences and as always I enjoyed watching your video.
I'm Sicilian and while watching this video, I was wondering why you chose to visit Palermo. What are the info you had about it before the departure? I like to discover what foreigners think about Sicily! Thank you and enjoy your travels 👋🏻
Ciao, first time I see one of your videos, being Italian I allow myself to answer two things you have said. When she was talking about Confetti, I suppose the video was taken during Carnival time, it is very typical at that time to see the floors of the streets and squares with "coriandoli". 😁 When you explained about kisses between men, you are right, it is not a 100% Italian custom, it is more typical to see it in southern Italy. We in the north of Italy are more of shaking hands, we are colder I would say 😜 New follower.
Hey thanks so much for giving your input! Love to learn from an Italian 😊 Thanks for the subscribe!
Princess Willa on the road with her court. 😂😂 She lets herself be coached and fed and accepts the homage of the Sicilian people. 🙏🙏 🤣🤣🤣 She deserves it❗️ After all, she is such a sweet, charming and excellent ambassador for her country. 👍👍 😁😁😁 😇

For future travels:visit Lipari/Volcano or even Stromboli! The destination airport will be Catania. You will pass Taormina on your way to these islands. And mount Etna is always in sight!
Thanks for the recommendations! We were bummed we didn’t make it to see Etna this time, but maybe another time.
@@OurStorytoTell Stromboli is much more interesting because you can book a hiking tour up to the crater (about 900 m uphill). There you have a direkt view (50 m above) on the eruption site. Stromboli has an (small) eruption every 10-20 min. You will never be closer to an active vulcano. And there is a Pizzaria Osservatorio just near the sciara del fuoco where the glowing lava rocks will go down to the mediteranian sea.
in sicily there is incredible food😍
We agree!
Well done 😘 Palermo is a beautiful city and I'm lucky beacause I live near Palermo. For information you can ask me ☺️

As much traveling as I’m hearing you guys do it sounds like you could used a reasonable sized van to travel and live in. Sicilly is also on my wish list so I'm extra excited. Italy is great to visit as a tourist and the chaos is charming but for living it wouldn't be my first choice.

@@OurStorytoTell I'm from your new home country Bavaria, but live in Switzerland now, and a big fan of Sicily. You can never go wrong with Palermo, it has so many layers and colorful corners and tastes to explore. Arabs and Normans, mountain fennel and pasta con sarde. If you like train rides you can do a nice day trip right through the heart of the island to Agrigento and the unreal Valle dei Templi.
Oh yeah, southern Italy is a world apart. After all Italy does reflect the north-south gradient also evident on the continental level…
And allegedly Sicily is entirely different from Italy again.
So yeah…😂

Yup, arancini are amazing!
We love seeing the differences; even between the North and South! We traveled to the Dolomites and WOW the difference between there and Sicily is incredible. :)
@@OurStorytoTell
The same difference that you find between southern and northern France ..... Do you think Marseille is the same as Brest or Nantes? And South Germany (Munich) is different from Hamburg, or the British from the Scots etc ..... It is normal that there are differences! Have you ever been to Switzerland where four different languages are spoken?
I don't want to drive a big American car through the narrow streets of Italy. The romans drove there with their donkey carts.
I think that German seriousness has a lot to do with German history. Those were formative events. Also until 1990 on the border of East and West. But under a hard shell, Germans are friendly and helpful.
Italians on the coast have always been considered laid-back.
Quite different those in the harsh remote alpine valleys.
But many Italians also live in Germany and offer delicious ice cream or work at VW
It’s true, luckily we didn’t have our car with us or else we would have been squeezing through so many tight spaces.
We agree that most Germans take just a bit to warm up, but once they do they are friendly and extremely helpful and thoughtful!
Am planning to purchase a property in Sicily... Is this the right time and decision???

Hey guys, nice to see you enjoyed your trip and you dont need to somehow excuse you did this vid some time ago. Yes, your are great humans providing a safety place for those who are in need. Hopefully it goes well for you and for the ukrainian people. Praying that this nightmare will stop soon for all of us. As seen, Willa can speak very well now and I am sure she has a lot to communicate. Be aware of discussions with her coming up. On the other hand she cant excuse anymore that she doesnt understand. Not sure Tanner if I mentioned to you already. I saw a phrase saying: the first daughter is a female copy of her father. Hmmh, is that scaring for you or not ? :-D Well, we have had couple sunny days but coming week will be cold again as forecasted. Anyway, after "den Eisheiligen" especially after "der kalten Sophie", we will have warmer days and nights as well and icecream will taste much much better, doesnt matter which colour, except the pink one from Rothernburg ob der Tauber which is the best as I am told.
Thanks for the comment Reinhold. It’s true, we shouldn’t need to preface why the video is posted much later than when it was taken, but we like to preface why sometimes for people who are new or missed some videos.
As for the comment about Willa being the female version of me…. 😂 we see a lot of me in her to be honest so we can believe that. Hopefully she gets most of my better traits 😬.
Raising kids right now comes with a lot of responsibility given the current world events. We are starting small but we try to teach her a lot of what’s going on right now and even why the family stayed with us and where their house is. Obviously in small toddler terms, but we want her to remember this hopefully later on in life when she’s grown up.
Unfortunately, we are seeing that the nice warm days are taking a break this week. Sad to see, but we’re extremely happy to have had as much sun and warmth as we did.
Good morning from Palermo...thank you!!...good bye!!

Always amazing how Americans keep stressing that countries like Germany, France, Greece or Italy, all with millennia of culture(s), cuisines and history, are different from the US. Like ... d'uh ;)
the point is not that they are different, the point is to experience HOW they are different. many, if not the majority of americans NEVER leave the US. at all, ever!

More here ---> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassata
A variation is "Cassata al Forno" blog.giallozafferano.it/dulcisinforno/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Cassata-al-forno-6788_rid.jpg
There is also an another similar dessert: the "Sfoglio delle Madonie". It's similar to the cassata al forno but the filling is a bit different (ricotta or tuma sweet).
Fun fact: there is a dispute between Polizzi and Petralia Soprana, two villages in the Regional Natural Park of the Madonie, on who invented first the sfoglio. These two type of sfoglio tastes different.
All of these desserts was invented before the 1600, the cassata siciliana is more ancient
