You are the Bob Ross of shaving! Love it!
Hahaha, thanks sir!
Exactly how I do it. Much better results than when working on the face. Imagine all that swirling on the cheek/neck... Sheesh....
Great tutorial Chris. Regards from Croatia
Thanks Antonio. I don't face lather because of all the extra scrubbing it would take me to achieve the same result. I try to minimize the amount of trauma I put on my face:) Have a great night brother!
Your lather looked perfect in this demonstration. I’m using basically the same technic, but I think I don’t hydrate it enough. Thank you for helping me make a better lather. Can’t wait to try it tomorrow morning.
Thanks so much sir. I hope this helps:)
I’ve been splaying heavily right at the start and adding a lot more water in the beginning as well. Thanks for this one! 🙌🏼
Thanks Serge. I try not to splay too much until a little later. This works well for me.
It was a terrific demonstration on bowl lathering, Chris!
Thanks so much Joseph, I appreciate it sir.
Excellent tutorial Chris! Iearned something today. And ive been doing this since i was in Nam. Yes, old men watch ur vids. Im an old fart who loves the youth. I learn from the youth, the world belongs to the youth. Thanx for all that ive learned from you guys! 🇺🇲✌
Thanks so much Eddy and thank you for you service. I've learned most of what I know form older folks who did it far before I ever did:)
This video really upped my lather game. More sheen, less air. Thanks!
Awesome Robert! I'm so glad it helped.
Excellent video Chris!!
Thanks for sharing
Jim
Thank you!
Sensational tutorial !!!!!! Now I know I was splaying to soon, I was getting too airy lathers. Cant wait to give this a try on the next shave!!!!! Thank you Chris, very helpful video
Definitely give it a try. This works for me 99% of the time. The only time it doesn't work is with the rare soap that is finicky about water.
All you really need is the tips of the brush. You are correct, stiffness does not matter, only technique.
Thanks Mike, I appreciate it brother.
This video answered all the questions I had concerning bowl lathering a shaving soap. How to fixate the soap in the bowl, the directions of swirling and the amount of pressure on the brush. So, thank you very much Chris!
Regards from Belgium.
Thanks so much Danny, I'm glad to have been of some help:)
Question, who in the world would give this video a thumbs down???
Great tutorial!
Hahah. Some folks come by just to give a thumbs down. That's ok with me:)
Need more "how to" videos like that!
Thank you sir!
I think that's why I've been getting slightly less effective lather with my Captain's Choice bowl lately. Too much agitation and splay too soon. I went back to my smooth bottom bowl for a while and it's been working better. Just shows we all need reminders sometimes, no matter how long we've been doing this.
Thanks G. My theory is that splaying and agitating too much early on can add more air to the mix. This is why I tend to do more circles early on. Once it starts getting creamy, I'll splay and agitate more to add volume.
Great video Chris. You are truly the best evangelist for the hobby - serving both new and seasoned shavers!
Thank you Todd, I really appreciate the kind words. It means a lot, truly.
Great vid, Chris!!
Great tutorial!!
Stay safe!
🤙
Thanks Sig, I appreciate it sir.
With a solid soap I like to throw in a few small pieces, soak them in warm water while I shower and then using the blooming water as a preshave. Works really well.
Yes sir, that works great.
different methods.. different pros & cons.. the key pro of bowl lathering is giving u control (over lots of things; most importantly amount of hydration).. It's like the more control u have when driving manual
Thanks sir. I agree, it does give you quite a bit of control.
That"s how i like to lather , great video . Would be cool to see more " how to " videos in the future cheers !
Thanks so much sir. I'll certainly be doing more as time goes on.
Great tutorial, Chris! I saw a good lather tutorial years ago by a guy that looked remarkably a lot like you. He was younger though. 😁 Good stuff! Hydration is where it's at!
Cheers! -Rob
PS:
Shannon's is an excellent shaving soap! I'm surprised her soaps aren't more popular or talked about. Great value too!
Thanks Rob, I appreciate the kind words. I agree with you on Shannon's. I think it's very easy to get a very creamy lather with her soaps. Some day folks might catch on:)
Nice tutorial on bowl lathering for us beginners.
Thanks so much Mike, I hope it helps.
"......and the lather of the year award goes to......"
Absolute quality Chris.
Now I need to see someone get a lather like that, with a badger brush......a 2 band badger brush.
Not saying it can't be done, of course, but I NEED to see how it's done.
Thanks for sharing your time.
🤝👊✌
Thank you Steve. I imagine it would be the same process with a badger but I'm not sure as I don't use them a lot:)
I hope it's OK to step in. First of all, excellent demonstration, Chris! And I can't think of a better soap than Shannon's for such a video. For a similar lather using a badger brush, look up the two videos Merkur Man posted about five years ago. He doesn't use a bowl, but builds a similar lather in the jar, using two other great soaps (depending on the video you watch), Mike's Natural Soaps and Mystic Water Soaps.
@@ZenMattster 🙏 much appreciated. I look forward to watching. I've seen many, but none that produces a look as good.
@@ZenMattster Thank you sir.
@@ZenMattster I just finished watching....😲. Now 'that's' what I'm talking about.
Thanks again.
bravo young man!
Great Video brother, new subscriber! Great lather, Peaks and Valleys.. lol and Slick.
A great video, as always, Chris. Really good advice, for anyone. No need for a bunch of backbone - Hallelujah 😀
Thanks so much Mark, I appreciate it sir.
Very nice tutorial. I usually scrape out a pea-sized amount of soap and spread it through the bottom of an IMUSA salsa bowl, then build lather with a barely damp synthetic brush. At several points I extract lather that's embedded in the knot (by leaning the base of the brush on the bowl) and rework that extracted lather with additional water. This seems to be a key step in maximizing lather volume. At the early stages it looks woefully inadequate, but I almost always end up with more than enough lather for a shave. Also works with 6-8 flakes of triple milled soaps pressed into a lather bowl. Given this frugal method, I wonder if I've even used 10% of the first soap I purchased when starting wet-shaving in 2016: Proraso Eucalyptus (Green). Then again, this hobby invites people to accumulate too many soaps (and brushes, and razors, and...)
If you want a real lathering challenge, search out 'Savon de Rasage au lait d'ânesse - Douceur d'Ânesse (Cedar/Lemongrass (with Donkey's Milk))' Shaving Soap by La Savonnerie Bourbonnaise. I noticed two glowing reviews of this particular soap (finding it extremely slick), but the two times I've used this I must have used way too much water as the lather was very foamy. (I'll have to try again.) One experienced user initially rubbed the soap on their face, then loaded their brush with a barely damp brush.
One RUclipsr demoed an interesting bowl when creating a lather: a silicone, collapsible travel 'slow feed' bowl for cats and small dogs, which has a variety of small nubs that could help with the production of a shaving lather. (Available on AliExpress for around $4).
Thanks so much. That sounds like a nice method as well. So long as it works well and you enjoy it, it's no problem for me:)
Great tutorial Chris... Thank you for sharing. We all keep learning all the time during our wet shaving journey. Keep the tutorials coming. Take care and stay safe Brother;-)
Thanks so much CB, I appreciate it!
Great tutorial Chris, couldn't have been posted at a better time. I have some samples that I will need to bowl lather. And going by the look of the consistency you would get the Johan Solo plop off of the blade.😂 Indeed the force is strong with you.
Have a great weekend.
Very best regards Gordon.☺️👍👌👊
Thanks Gordon, I appreciate it sir. This would definitely create one of those bloops Johan Solo is looking for:)
Wow thanks for this video, I too like a well hydrated lather
My pleasure sir. Thanks so much for watching!
Well done! I will practice again, tomorrow!
Thank you sir!
Sensational tutorial Mr. CDB TSE.
Although it is my shave, I do it your way
Good lather used to be the bane of shaving for me. A nice synthetic brush, a bowl from Diego thermal scuttles, and that’s all it took. I’ll experiment with trying to make the lather more hydrated and see. The quad mill soaps seem to be able to take gallons of water from what I’ve experienced.
Thanks so much brother. I'm glad you're not suffering from lather problems anymore:)
Damn I just found another reason to love wet shaving. Taking the time to build a perfect lather. I'm gonna try this method with the medium hard soaps, like cella. I bought the brick and used a scuttle from Taylor of old bond street, the one with the holes on top, not a good idea. Even so I still had a good shave. But I'm gonna use this method and this type of mug next time I use the cella brick. I love that there's so many different types of hard soaps, soft soaps, creams, scuttles and brushes. So many combinations. They're almost endless.
This is what I was waiting for! Thank you Chris, best lathers on RUclips:))
Thanks so much RK, I appreciate it sir.
@IAMCDB I'm a big fan of your shaving content. I'm almost 1 year wet shaving, & 3 months using shaving soaps. I'm very practical and frugal in my life. My favorite shaving soap is not really a shaving soap but I'm getting great results. I'm using Pears glycerin soap from the dollar tree store for $1.38 with tax for a 3.5 Oz bar. That com3s out to .46 cents an Oz. I'm loving my Full Flight Tech synthetic shaving brush that comes with 2 2 Oz orange zest & 2 2 Oz Sandlewood shaving soaps, 1 1 Oz orange zest shaving cream, & stainless steel bowl for $11.86 with tax.
Excellent demonstration...thank you for sharing, Sir!
My pleasure Jarred. Thanks so much for the kind words.
Thanks for the lesson. I have recently switched from cartridge to DE shaving and find getting a good lather elusive.
Terrific video
Thank you sir!
Well done I alway love how to videos I always learn something new or a new technique even though i have been doing it for years it there is always room to improve
Thanks Seferton, I appreciate it very much.
I enjoyed this video, I am trying to get my “straights” lather right... After all these years it is like teaching an old dog a new trick. I am used to plaster face lather. I need to try to get my whole face shaved without a spray bottle lathering half my face again during the process. Years ago that was not the issue, now I am disabled so I am trying to get some joy out of this once dreaded “military task”. If Johan can do it🦸🏼♂️, I shall too! Stay Blessed🙏
You can definitely do it brother. I had to change the way I lathered when I took on straights last year as well. Just keep working at it and you'll definitely get it.
Hello Chris from Antalya, Turkey. I pushed my Arko to the limit after watching your video and it's the best lather I have created. I have always been afraid of adding too much water.
Hi Andrew. I'm so happy to hear you got a great lather using this method. You can add too much water but I think it's fun to experiment and figure out where the line is:)
@@IAMCDB Thank's Chris.

Brilliant guide/demonstration Chris 👍🏻
Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you very much Chris
Thanks so much Mario, I appreciate it.
Beautiful lather my brother .
Thanks so much sir!
Thanks for this tutorial Chris!
I've been face lathering for the last 12 years but now want to experiment with a bowl and purchased a ceramic bowl. So your video came up at a perfect time!!
Thanks so much. You might still prefer face lathering but it might be fun to try something different.
Wonderful video! Most do their building off camera then slap it on and the new shaver has no idea how to get the same results. Thank you!
Thank you William. I'll make a point to link the lather making videos in all my shaving videos that way people will be able to see how I do it.
Great tutorial Chris. Added to my shaving tips and tricks and my shaving tutorial playlists👍 I have even learnt something today!
Thanks so much Mr. G, I appreciate it.
Great video. I have learned a lot from you . Keep the the outstanding work you are doing .
Thanks so much Anthony, I appreciate it.
Looks like a nice lather.
Thanks very much Steve.
Nicely done, Chris! 👍
Thank you Kirk!
Very nice instructional video!
Thanks so much Wayne!
Excellent video idea.
I like my traditional soaps, but Arko just works great.
Arko works great also:)
The Arko soap can still be scooped, or if desired scraped, from the container, and is soft enough to be pushed down flattened onto the bottom of the lathering bowl. If you have Arko Shaving Soap Stick, you can cut thin slices using a knife and put onto the bowl's bottom.
Awesome sauce! Thanks for the new bowl lathering tutorial. I like a wet lather myself, wet and creamy. I enjoy Jeffrey Smith’s lather it reminds me of your lather but Jeffrey’s is a tad bit wetter.
Thanks Marc. I appreciate it sir. You can't go wrong with Jeffrey Smith:)
Great lather. Imagine how much fun it would have been to face lather 😉
No fun at all, that's why I don't do it:) I try to minimize the amount of scrubbing I do on my face.
Thanks Chris, Great informative video. Copper bowl's never break!!
Thank you Doug! I agree, these Copper bowls are very durable.
great lather tutorial!
Thank you Jeff!
Great technique sir!!
Thanks Erik, I appreciate it sir.
This is very helpful. Thank you for this sir.
Thanks very kindly sir!
Nice tutorial Chris!!
Thanks Randall, I appreciate it.
Nice brother. Great lather tips .pretty much how I do mine except for I do the Ken finger wiggle with the water😂😂😂😂
Thanks Paul, I appreciate it sir! Finger wiggle, hahaha.
Amazing, definitely the best lather I've ever seen. Tried out with an arko straight away. Not exactly the same result (less shiny, I assume air bubbles too large), will try more.
Nice video cris.i do the same! I swipe the brush to incorporate the air!
Thanks Matteo, I appreciate it sir.
You do not need to. Air will go into the lather and will build volume as you add small quantities of water and agitate with the brush.
Great job sir.
Thank you very much Mike.
Great tutorial CDB.
Thanks JT, I appreciate it.
Excellent tutorial!! I think using this te technique will really step up my game! I’ve noticed my lathers can often dry out and be under hydrated, I think I added too much water too quickly or just no where near enough. Going to give this a go with my Stirling soap during my next shave, thank you so much 👍🏼. Also I just subscribed to your channel too, you have very informative reviews of products.
Great video Chris, I really enjoyed watching this one.
I'd love to see some more tutorials.

Thanks sir. I'll certainly be doing more as time goes on.
Great tutorial, Chris! Thank you!
Thank you William!
Thanks for the helpful vid bud.
My pleasure Pedro.
Granted I don't have Shannon's Soap, but I will have to give this a whirl. Heck, I've got a tiny lather bowl, so still might not be able to get much good lather.
What I keep getting is that in head shaving, my lather will be dried out before I finish one half so I have to reapply continually. Still trying to learn so I can get a nice, slick lather.
Hey Chris. Maybe get a mister and mist the dome a little as you're going. That might help keep it hydrated.
One needs more soap, and more lather for head shave than for a face shave.
Now please do a face lather tutorial with that wcs brush also please load from the tub. 🙏
I don't face lather and I don't load from the tub. There's no point in doing that for me. That said, I used to and it worked fine.
You are legend!!! 👍👍👍
You are too kind sir.
@@IAMCDB I am lovin your videos 🙏

Hahahah, thanks Banocka!
I actually considered whether that might make a nice Patreon perk. One private video tutorial.
Whether joking or not, if you want "exact" values, you can find them using lathers which you make. Using a one-eighth teaspoon measure can help.
Great video Chris! Can you please make a tutorial how you lather hard soaps like MdC for example?
I already have. Look in the Tips & Tutorials playlist for the Col Conk video and you'll see it. It's very hard like MDC.
@@IAMCDB what if you can’t cut a slice from the jar, like in MdC case?
@@michalisli that's precisely the way I use my MDC:) I cut a slice from the jar. That said, I did a lathering video for The Razor Company and demonstrated three methods. In one method I load from the tub and face lather. The quality of that video isn't HD like mine as they don't upload in HD, but give it a watch and see if it helps. ruclips.net/video/AzVHXeR1-gY/видео.html
That's quite the lather! Must be the chupacabra oil.
It has to be the chupacabra oil!
I like proraso. 30 seconds and have at it.
Nice vid! Btw, i ordered a set of PAA Bailey's Irish Coffee! 😁👍🏼
I hope you enjoy it Chris. Use it in good health brother!
@@IAMCDB Me too! I heard it smell's pretty awesome tho! 😁👍🏼
Thank you! Very helpful. Would you recommend a high quality shaving soap over a high quality shaving cream (all other factors equal)?
Excellent tutorial Chris, will try your method tommorow. Does this method also work with creams or do they need a little less water. Thanks for sharing.
I would go slower with the water on creams. Thanks brother!
It's a very interesting video. I've got some questions which have popped while watching. Isn't scooping the soap less economical and makes you go through a tub faster? Have you managed to obtain the same creamy texture by loading directly on the puck and then working in the bowl?
I haven't loaded from the puck for a long time, so I can't tell you. It depends on how much you scoop and how long or how much you'd load really. Scooping certainly keeps the soap in better condition over the long haul though. You don't need to keep your soap tub open to dry out, and thus it's not exposed to the elements. Also, you're not constantly putting water in the tub and exposing it to brushes etc.
Thank you for the demo Chris!
Which copper bowl were you using btw, the standard or the heavy weight version?
I'm using the Captain's Choice standard sir.
Please please test Barbus I like it New video
Barbus will be coming up tomorrow:)
@@IAMCDB I know you are fantastic Man thanks again
If you end up with too much air in the lather how would you remedy that? Or should we learn to stop agitating so much and add more water earlier? 🤔
More times than not I end up with alot of air, especially when lathering a new soap, and sometimes when I add water to a airy lather it dissipates faster on the face.
Thanks for the video! I'm always trying to learn more techniques and tricks to improve my routine.
Have a good one man!
Steve
If I ended up with too much air then I just continue to work the lather and slowly add water. You can usually work the air out of it over time.
@@IAMCDB ok cool. Maybe I add too much water at once to a airy lather and that's why it ends up dissipating during the shave, but it looks great in the bowl. I've had that happen with the Zaharoff original soap..
@@drunkn711 Some soaps are a little more finicky than others. I've had two soaps in the last year that didn't respond well to my method here. One of them was Zaharoff Signature Royale:)
Not as difficult as you believe. Try adding the water in small increments between agitations.
Thanks for the video. Can you explain the reason for micro bubbles in the soap?
Bubbling is usually due to air. It's a matter of working those bubbles out by working the lather without adding too much air and adding hydration. Small bubbles aren't really too much of an issue. If you have lots of bubbles and it's airy, then it's time to go back to the drawing board.
Soap if agitated with water will also disperse air into the solution. The air entered into the solution being agitated will break into increasingly small bubbles. That is what soaps and many surfactants do. Do not be afraid of it; and just understand it will happen without your trying to put air into it.
Next time can you do a puck? Similar process I’m sure, but with subtle differences no doubt.
I already have. Check out this playlist and look for the Col Conk video. That's a very hard puck. ruclips.net/p/PLuSULob8B2_EYXNRY3PlJkcaxPNlE-aMN
@@IAMCDB Thanks...
Same thing. Use the wet brush (but squeeze away some water) and load your brush. Now continue everything else to be done in the bowl.
With regards to different soaps taking different amount of water…. What’s your input on PAA?? I’m following your technique to a T and cannot get this result with CK6…. Dries out very quickly on my face. Thanks in advance!
Should I do the same with creams?
With creams I’d use less water. Go slower with the water as they are easier to over-hydrate.
That's an amazing lather! Do you get the same quality lather when you face lathering?
That Shannon soap seems amazing.
I don't face lather sir. I used to but I haven't for a long time. I prefer to use a bowl so I can limit the amount of wear I put on my face from scrubbing with a brush:)
Great Video Chris!! Is this the heavyweight or regular bowl?
This is the regular one sir.
@@IAMCDB great, thanks!
How can I whip up a lather in a captain’s choice bowl when you have hard solfer water. Because I have hard water and it always drys my lather when I put on my face. Can you help me with this problem.
If you're certain it's the water, buy a jug of distilled water from the grocery store and use it. That will completely eliminate the possibility of hard water or minerals being the issue.
@@IAMCDB thanks IAMCDB for the tip. Have a wonderful Saturday evening.
Great video. Great bowl. Your brush is a bit too big for the size of the bowl. Sub as a token of appreciation

BR
Thank you sir. There's a link in the description of this video sir:)
@@IAMCDB Thank you. I wasn't aware of that. Unfortunately they don't ship to my place. :(
@@G_from_G Sorry about that.
Must have missed this one.
So do you 'use' all the 0.25 tsp. in that lather build?
I don't actually measure it out, that's an approximation. I do try to use all the soap and most of the time I do.
Use whatever amount of soap that YOU find is needed. 0.25 teaspoon of soap is more than enough for most people. Too much in fact. I'd suggest trying one-eighth teaspoon of soap. You may find you do well with something a little more than one-eighth but much less than one-fourth teaspoon of soap to make your lather. Most of the time you take the quantity you need by figuring what you see visually when you scoop out some soap. No precise measuring needed.
Thats a wonderful lather but I just don't typically have the patience to spend that much time.
Keep in mind I wouldn't normally take this much time. It went longer because it was a tutorial. That said, part of the joy of the hobby is slowing things down and taking the time to enjoy the experience:)
Your alternative is to use a soft soap, or a cream-type soap.
@@10floz30minutes or face lather for 30 seconds.....
@@TheDobbermn I doubt that even for a face lather that 30 seconds is enough time. (at least for most people).
@@10floz30minutes We are all different people and different things work for different people. The lather that CDB creates is amazing, but I just don't require it or desire it. I do it every once in a while just to do it, but yes I can face lather in 30 seconds and get a wonderful BBS shave.
First
Thank you!
How BAD is it to “load” directly from the “puck,” esp. if you allow it to air dry bet. uses? 🤔
I would think that any concerns about bacterial growth would be assuaged by the fact that soap is anti-bacterial by nature, no?
It's not bad to load from the puck if you let it try out. Bacteria has been known to grow in a soap tub from time to time but it's rare. Most people who dry them out never have any issues.
You spent 6 minutes from the time you put that soap in the bowl till you finished making that lather. That time should have been spent on the face. Just face lather. It is the BEST way to lather period.
This isn't applicable to every situation. Firstly, individuals who scoop the soap rather than loading in the tub will generally be better served lathering in the bowl. The soap tub itself is better preserved by not introducing water to it, and it has to be transferred to a bowl anyway to load. Why not just mix in the appropriate amount of water then?
Furthermore, it took 6 minutes because this is a tutorial. It can be done quicker off camera without providing commentary and instructions simultaneously.
Lastly, the tutorial would take the same amount of time on the face considering load time, time spent adding hydration, and time spent working the lather to the right consistency.
I face lather too but plenty of people have sensitive skin. Rubbing a brush against their face for six minutes isn’t going to be viable for them. There’s a lot of ways to accomplish what you want, no need to be so single minded.
I spent 6 minutes because I'm dong a tutorial. The best way to lather is the way that results in an excellent shave for any given user. It's as simple as that.
My bowl latherings also go on for some "6 minutes" or possibly a little longer. If 6 minutes is too much time for you, then make some measurements on lathers that YOU make; so that later, you know just how much soap you need and how much water you need. Once you have those facts, then USE those quantities to prepare your lather.
You’re doing it wrong!
Hahaha
