  • "After listening to "a series of attacks from liberal media outlets" against their religion correspondent Lauren Green for her interview with author Reza Aslan, Fox News invited Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, to discuss the controversy Wednesday. He vigorously defended the Fox News correspondent."*
    Fox News' Lauren Green's interview of author Reza Aslan is now infamous for Green's incessant, idiotic line of questioning without listening. But according to Fox, the interview was just fine! Then why does Aslan feel sorry for his bafflingly persistent interviewer? Ana Kasparian, Dave Rubin, and John Iadarola discuss.

    Classic. :) I think the panic began when Aslan stated that he was an academic. This is where the confusion started. It's obviously not a common profession at the fox studio. They should really just replace everyone with 5-yo children and continue as a kid's news channel. The only thing that would be noticed is an increased intellectual capacity.

They may not see him as the messiah, but a very important prophet. I'm a christian saying this. You don't have to be antagonistic to muslims just because of their religion. It is very possible to disagree and also be respectful at the same time.

    A religious correspondant makes complete sense. The chick sounds as ignorant as Lauren Green in her 'whaAat?! that's CrAAzy'. The fact that FOX's religious correspondent is this ignorant, biased woman? THAT is 'crazy' (well not really 'crazy' would be FOX having someone who WASN'T bias), but the fact that they have one, like the dude behind the mic pointed out. Makes sense.

    • @jenniferhunter4074
      @jenniferhunter4074 10 лет назад +2

      a religious correspondent makes sense if they cover religious segments concerning doctrine and such. But I don't see why a news organization that covers news and political events would have a religious correspondent. Why couldn't an average reporter talk to this man about his credentials, his qualifications, his possible bias, and his summary of his book? Was there going to be a debate on the divinity of Jesus Christ or some arcane doctrinal theory?
      A legal correspondent would explain legal minutia. A political correspondent would explain political minutia. I'm not sold on the necessity of a religious correspondent on a news network.

      It's only relevant when we're fighting back against prejudice and making sure we keep the first amendment to protect us from the majority. Of course we can turn our backs to religion, and do. There's too much to be done out there--volunteering with the homeless, food banks, animal shelters, teaching reading to illiterate folks at the local library, reading to the blind, and much, much, more. I'm not going to waste a minute thinking about the supernatural while the real world lies in ruin.

      Actually, muslims are way quicker to get mad about blasphemy than Christians are due to the very simple reason that the Koran is considered the direct and literal word of God. This means you certainly can't suggest anything in the Koran itself is wrong or should be interpreted non-litterally. Anything else connected to Islam is more open to discussion, but not much. Analyzing Mohammed from a historical perspective will inevitably require some analysis of religious syncretism, which will imply that the Koran is partly a human work. Such an implication is deeply blasphemic, and a reason to get violent against you from many muslim point of views.
      All this is why I struggle to see the muslim world ever becoming modern. Islam is fundamentally more incompatible with reason, skepticism and science than all the other big religions. It inherently breeds literal thinking and ignorance.

    • @Bl4ckfairy
      @Bl4ckfairy 10 лет назад +24

      "Does not do much to validate his intelligence" How many Phds do you have? And do you even know what religious studies are? "Religious studies , or Religious education , is the academic field of multi-disciplinary, secular study of religious beliefs, behaviors, and institutions. It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasizing systematic, historically-based, and cross-cultural perspectives.
      While theology attempts to understand God, religious studies tries to study human religious behavior and belief from outside any particular religious viewpoint. Religious studies draws upon multiple disciplines and their methodologies including anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and history of religion." It's no different than having a phd in history.

    • @yiannismihail
      @yiannismihail 10 лет назад

      Bl4ckfairy By your reasoning there should be cosmetic studies as well. How about war studies? Both occupations in which humanity delved in with an enthousiasm equal to that given to religion. Lets not get into the science behind each one. Chemistry, biology, AND anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy. Nope. Doesn't in the least validate the subject.
      Being born into a religion is an almost inescapable accident in the world we live in today. One may be excused for being labelled this or that silly religious sect but converting is a wholly different story. That takes a particular kind of mental deficiency or brain damage.
      Although I by no means compare myself even to Einsteins little finger I still have to wonder how many phds he had. Do you know?

    • @Bl4ckfairy
      @Bl4ckfairy 10 лет назад +7

      "That takes a particular kind of kind of mental deficiency or brain damage" Based on what scientific facts exactly? Again he has 4 phds in religious studies, which studies what different religions believe, compares beliefs between different religions, and does so with "systematic, historically-based, and cross-cultural perspectives." That means they look at the historical and cultural contexts of religions. How is this any different from having a degree, let alone 4 phs, in history or cultural studies? Not only does he have 4 phds in religious studies, he also extensively sites of religious studies scholars, and has been studying Christianity for 20 years. But I mean, if you think you know more about the subject than he does, feel free to provide your credentials.

      Bl4ckfairy "Based on what scientific facts exactly?"
      arstechnica.com/science/2013/08/new-meta-analysis-checks-the-correlation-between-intelligence-and-faith/
      Again, could I get 4 phds on knitting, Gandalf or star trek?
      Is there a phd on addiction or facebook use?
      Does Ken Hams phd actually count for something?
      You consistently fail to see what I am saying. Probably my fault that I did not make it painfully clear first time round.
      DESPITE his 4 phds (not) in psychology, sociology, history and quantum mechanics (see how generous I am to grant him valid scientific titles rather than his declared expertise on supernatural mumbo jumbo construed by stone age goat herders?) he willingly converted to the Islamic fairy tale which, for all intents and purposes is the worst religion around nowadays. Not that Cristianity was any better but it has mellowed some since the torture and burnings of the dark-ages. What kind of rational person does that? None. So our subject is, at the very least, not rational. And intelligence without reason ...

    • @Bl4ckfairy
      @Bl4ckfairy 10 лет назад +6

      But he isn't writing about what he believes, he's writing about the historical and cultural context of Jesus life, because that is what religious studies scholars do. He is not trying to say that what Christians or Muslims believe is true or that one religion is right over another. These are things that a theology scholar might look at. He's simply looking at the historical and religious contexts of religious beliefs and what impact the context had on the beliefs and what impact the beliefs had on history and culture. That is what religious studies is.

However keep in mind, the Fatamid Caliphate was kind in its rule, the Seljuks not so much, and Heretic Christian Sects were also massacred. Yes well Reza Aslan , when it comes to his biases he is no better. Actually he is flagrantly dishonest. He tweeted a quote from Sam Harris. Here's Aslan's quote Same Harris wrote: "Some propositions are so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill people for believing them." Is was tweeted with a scary dark image of Sam. Here it is with context. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black...he's one of them...just better spoken:
    The power that belief has over our emotional lives appears to be total. For every emotion that you are capable of feeling, there is surely a belief that could invoke it in a matter of moments. Consider the following proposition:
    Your daughter is being slowly tortured in an English jail.
    What is it that stands between you and the absolute panic that such a proposition would loose in the mind and body of a person who believed it? Perhaps you do not have a daughter, or you know her to be safely at home, or you believe that English jailors are renowned for their congeniality. Whatever the reason, the door to belief has not yet swung upon its hinges.
    The link between belief and behavior raises the stakes considerably. Some propositions are so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill people for believing them. This may seem an extraordinary claim, but it merely enunciates an ordinary fact about the world in which we live. Certain beliefs place their adherents beyond the reach of every peaceful means of persuasion, while inspiring them to commit acts of extraordinary violence against others. There is, in fact, no talking to some people. If they cannot be captured, and they often cannot, otherwise tolerant people may be justified in killing them in self-defense. This is what the United States attempted in Afghanistan, and it is what we and other Western powers are bound to attempt, at an even greater cost to ourselves and to innocents abroad, elsewhere in the Muslim world. We will continue to spill blood in what is, at bottom, a war of ideas.

      I think what Mr. Aslan is trying to point out is that Sam Harris seems to be advocating the abandonment of reason and peaceful resolution. In this quote Mr. Harris is apparently justifying violent conflict because the enemies of peace feel justified in their actions. Whether you are on his side or not Mr. Aslan seems to be pointing out that Mr. Harris is not on the side of peace. I don't feel he is wrong for pointing that out as Mr. Harris himself has made that quite clear in the quote you presented, he just chose the most effective portion for his argument with and exposition of Mr. Harris as an advocate of violence.

    • @HarrisetBella
      @HarrisetBella 10 лет назад +1

      jason tatro I've read every book Harris has written. He does not advocate violence however in certain anecdotal situations, we, the human race, would be in a horrific position if a group like ISIS had access to a nuclear weapon. During the cold war the MAD proposition (mutually assured destruction) kept us safe, everyone involved worried about this life. If a death cult that truly believes paradise awaits after death and their leader advocates conquer or die....we are in an untenable position. You may agree or disagree with the proposition however miss representing someone argument is wrong. Posting Sam Harris's picture and playing with the lighting to make him look ominous is a FOX news move. It's like taking a freeze frame of someone who is blinking and posted their half closed eyes. I for one, completely agree with Sam Harris. Christians, Muslims and Jews are all equally wrong and all have used their dogmas to do some of the most horrific things the planet has ever seen. However in present day...Christians as a whole are incredibly benign. No one follows the Old Testament and better yet...hard core true Christian believers are actually few and far between. Most active Christians follow their religion out of tradition. Israeli Jews are in a tough spot and they seam to be major dicks with regards to Palestinians but to be honest...I'm not really up to date with that situation. Seams to me a two state solution would be the way to go. Now the Muslim religion...present day...is problematic and how someone can say differently is shocking. It seamed like the Ben Affleck crowd is in some major denial. When a Canadian soldier was shot they did not go check the local Amish church, Jewish Temple or Christian Church. The "moderate muslim community" needs to stand up. The problem is the Koran...one can argue ISIS or Al Q. is simply following what the book says. Christianity is like Lego. It's gets deconstructed and rebuilt every generation so that it fits in peoples homes. Present day Christianity cannot dictate anything to anyone. If the majority wants it : divorce, pre marital sex, contraception, working on the Sabbath) they just tear it down and built back in a way it is palatable to the majority and the dough keeps flowing. What I wish moderate muslims would do is instead of changing the perfect word of God...like Christians have no problems doing, is see the light...and join us in the third millennium and participate in moving our civilization forward. Imagine no religion...(singing)

He says to paraphrase, "we should talk about or have an open discussion about how to act in the event of an imminent nuke threat." See how those are very different? Here is the quote again, "Some propositions are so dangerous that it *may* even be ethical to kill people for believing them." I would like to quote directly but I have followed his work enough to feel confident this is his angle.

    debating with idiots will make you sick even if you both agree on everything :)
