Here is an EMG Showdown! I have 2 nearly identical LTD guitars, one with a set of Kirk Hammett Bone Breakers and the other with a set of EMG 81 & 60 pickups!
The Bone Breakers are Kirk Hammett's new signature pickups and the 81 and 60 are the classic Metallica pickups used on The Black Album, Load, Reload etc.
They sound very similar, but there is a subtle difference. Which do you prefer?
I compare the neck position, the middle position (Which is both pickups combined) and the bridge pickup. I do multiple riffs in each comparison, palm muted chugging, open chords, some riffs and some lead playing. I even do examples in distortion and clean!

Great video! I was excited to finally get to hear these. To my ear they’re very similar to the classic 81/60 setup. A tad more clarity and mids but not enough for me to choose one over the other.
I use the 81/60 and I was on the fence about maybe purchasing the bone breakers in the future. Great video man!
For what it's worth, I read that Richard Kruspe of Rammstein (who's latest signature guitar has emg 81 pickups) used to use a kh 2 as well. Maybe my ears aren't sensitive enough to tell the difference but they basically both sound the same to me. Definitely not different enough for me to want to spend money on both. I'm more of a rammstein fan anyway so I'll stick with the emg 81 pickups.
Bein a little conservative id say.... Im no expert but man they sound exactly the same.... Least the bridge positions as i font use the neck. My set is 85 bridge 81 neck.
The Bone Breaker set sounds warmer and has a rounded off top end. Probably sits in a mix better than a regular 81/60 set. I wonder how much is the guitar, though? The “Kirk’s Guitar” LTD sounds very thin and bright compared to the other one with the BB set.
Umm, emg confirmed that the bonebreaker set is literally an 81 and 60a.... with a green logo. Any sound difference you're perceiving is placebo effect.
The bone breaker neck pick up is a emg alnico v pick up bridge is a 81
@@WholeLottaBulldog I'd love to see your source. And how do you "perceive" a sound difference? If you're going to play at being a smartass you could at least try to read a fucking dictionary.
@@heavenlywithhishands calm down, you sook.
@@WholeLottaBulldog😮😅
The bonebreakers sounds extra chunky 🤘🤘
They are nice 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I found the BB very weak compared to 81 bridge, I took it out an put the 81 back ,the neck is better I find though
The bonebreaker set is just an 81 in the bridge and a 60A in the neck (A denoting an alnico magnet instead of the ceramic magnet on the regular 60s.). So any tonal differences are due to the different guitars (as far as the bridge position is concerned) .
Hmm interesting!
rickyboyH thats what they were saying in thr begining but a lot of people have been saying the bridge pup for the bb is less gainish than the 81
Every video I saw on youtube, combined with my own experiences, the bone breakers always had the same difference. They're punchier, and more focused. I don't think they're the same. Otherwise they would be called the "EMG Kirk Hammett Bone Breaker 81/60A" just like "Zakk Wylde 81/85" or "Glenn Tipton 81/85" or "Gary Holt 81/89R."
I changed them in my kh 602, the BB were noticably weaker output than 81, I kept the 81 and did the 18v mod
because not doing a test with another type of metal other than Metallica, it is obvious that the EMG Bonebreaker serve to sound like the band
Hey there. Most people who buy Bone Breakers definitely play Metallica, but the point was more to show the difference between the different pickups, not really to show how it sounds like their albums.
GuitarGuts I think it would be good to show that the pads are versatile and not only to sound like metal, finally whoever acquires an ESP seeks not only to play a single type of metal
Te bone breakers sound a little thicker to me. My 2019 kh-602 has the bone breakers.
I have been trying out EMG Bonebreakers with a SA in the middle in a old Ibanez RG which i had doing nothing (it has been the subject of many neck changes!!!!!) & as I do love the 81,sa,85 in my h,s,h guitars (my fave EMG setup is 89,sa,sa) but I thought lets try these?
Well I love them!!!!!!I plug into old MK 2 Marshall Superlead heads (50 watters are my fave's) into Base (flat front) 4X12" loaded with mostly 75 watt Celestions (but I have been moving back too 25 watt Greenbacks!!!!!!) & I run my amplifires too have that Malcome Young drive, then I hot it up with a Keeley modded Ibanez TS808!!!!!!
The EMG bone breakers are really dynamic (my clean tone is too switch off the overdrive pedal & roll down the guitar volume!!!) & these I will say are the best active pickups too date!!!
By the way I'm a session musician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm planning the same thing on my old Jackson PS4, but then i thought of deleting the middle pickup and using a 3-way switch instead. Not sure what to do.
The BB's are more round in the mids
i still prefer the 81 over bone breakers, i like the amount of attack it offers with harsh highs.
Any suggestions for noisegate or maybe cables to eliminate buzz comming from these emgs sounds like a gd fender.
Cool demo. The Bonebreakers are really good but they are noticeably warmer. I gotta go with EMG 81. My guitar has the EMG 81 AND 85 set they're my all time favorites so maybe I'm a bit biased.
Bone Breakers are pushing more mids than the 81 which is lending to it's improved clarity.
having bonebreakers on m100 just makes it worth more right?
Bone Breakers sound thicker
Right?
Awesome pickups
Thank you!! 🤘🏼
Thanks for the comparison, 81/60 👍
I like the 81/60.
When playing distorted, there is less difference than playing clean. The bone breakers definitely sound better. They sound less distorted and more clean. Bone Breakers for me.
BB ARE THICKER WITH LESS HIGHS
Hi, how do I know that the battery of these pickups is empty?
There is no battery inside of the pickups. Active pick ups have a different wiring than passives where the battery is connected and located where you find the pots.
I'm surprised
I have been watching heaps of comparison videos.
I have come to the conclusion that the emg 81 60 or 81 85 combo is where it's at.
I really don't know why the tallica boys went to emg for sig pick ups other than for extra money.
I think EMGs sound pretty damn killer! I prefer the 60 over the 85, but only slightly. I just finished a video that will be dropping real soon, comparing the 85 and 60 back to back, so make sure you’re subscribed and be watching for it 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Metallica IS the reason emg's sell....In the 80's I knew EMG's 4 years before I started learning guitar.
for me Bone Breakers > EMG 81 & 60 > JH Het Set
Bonecrusher set takes it for me. The cleans were better & the dirt just had a little extra something over the 81.
I've heard the Bone Breakers are just standard EMG 81's with a green logo. Could be wrong but honestly they dont sound much if all different in the bridge position.
1:00 thought you were gonna play Shattered by Pantera
Sounds about the same the BB's has a little more warmth to them
The sound Emg bb more brutal from emg 81/60
Bone breakers sound the best to me.
Emg 81 sound like home to me lol
Maybe if he didn't play through a line 6 or something we'd hear better
Tanke guitarhours!
bad notes dude tune your guitar 👎
Terrible sound quality.. playing was just bad..
Not helpful at all..
Go and do a better video then
