Dirt Jumper VS Trials Bike

  • I've been riding my Trek Ticket dj bike for trials a lot lately. I love how I can do 360 barspins, big jumps, and rail gaps on the same bike. How much trials ability am I giving up?
People have been asking this a lot. In this video I do a direct comparison between the Trek Ticket and the Simtra ST-1.
First song by Lusine. Second song found on YT, by Ouse.

Great video! I think interdisciplinary riding is better, you are only slightly worse at trials on the Trek, but comparatively the street riding benefits are colossal. I see it as you can have a bike that is single disciplinary is 100%/10%/10%/10%, multi-disciplinary is 80%/80%/80%/80%... The overall amount of awesome things you can do is just much higher and it's a lot more impressive. Being able to sidehop to barspin, is a lot more impressive I think than being able to hop a couple inches higher. Unless you are like me, and can only side hop a couple inches hahaha. For some reason I am really bad at sidehops.

I just bought a dirt jumper. I purchased a Santa Cruz Jackal a couple of weeks ago. I was wondering how it is to do trials on such bikes. Thanks for the video. Seriously it's awesome that you created it. In some ways it's some proof that the dirt jumper can be used to do such things and isn't so geometrically incapable of doing such. I hope you have a amazing life ahead of you with alot of happiness how I mean. 😁👍

I bought a DJ bike put an ordinary rigid fork , it has a low bb with low front end a simple bump jump throws me otb and broke my left elbow and wrist, now it has a 100mm Manitou Marvel fork. By the way Merry Christmas James stay safe and more awesome videos to come.

Yesss, the video I've been waiting for! Biggest surprise was the Ticket sidehopping 39" and the Simtra not making 46", that's less of a difference than I expected. I bet the Ticket could gap 7' flat.

Good video. Helped understand how frame shape affects moves. I’m also riding a trial-geared DJ bike as it’s less twitchy under my 50+yr old body. Just doing fun moves, nothing big as I don’t bounce like I used to😉

Impressive riding on the ticket, look way more controlled and smooth. Still got the moves on the simtra but the jerky brake and twitchiness is very apparent. Tar in the wet haha you're a beast

That was a fantastic comparison. I too would love to see how the arcade compares with the ticket and pure trials bike doing trials moves and the arcade vs ticket on the more streetier moves. Add a comparison with the remedy and you have a mini series.

Ali Clarkson had shown his view on this. He said that you can try feeling trial on a DJ bike. All you need is to change gear(s).

Was thinking of buying a DJ and trying some trials stuff on it since all of my past bikes were normal MTBs and this is the closest geometry to a trials I'll probably get, so thanks alot for the vid!
Quick question: can any DJ suspension forks withstand the stresses of trials riding? Just something that'll bug me once I get the bike

Still, very impressive what can be done on the DJ. Now go run some jump lines on the trials bike.

I hope you will see this question and have the time to answer. What is the size of your DJ? Is it 24"? Thank you for the video James!

The Ticket is a one-size only frame, 26” wheels.

Hey James I bought myself a DJ which I'd like to convert to also practice some trials. But what kind of gear ratio do you use? Thnx

    • @jamesbtrials

Anything that equals 22-18. Right now I have 28-22.

Out of curiousity, how does a DJ compare to a street oriented trials bike, like a Hex (as the Hex also has 26” wheels)?

    • @jamesbtrials
      @jamesbtrials  9 месяцев назад +1

Those land right in the middle. OK for trials and OK for tricks and ramps, but not the best at either. They excel at flowy trials. Linking moves and bunny-hops.
