I was practicing on the wrong stairs for the longest time (lol) so when I got to the 50 star door it worked like a charm within 10 tries. Felt great doing it for the first time ! =]
I find interesting I did the blj before the timing tip by simply switching to a keybind with A as the only right hand input (during blj) so that I can just mash full speed with right hand. Idk what it has to do with what you said.
If I forget what speed 450 bpm is, 4 semiquavers for every long jump with every beat starting upon landing seems to work alright. Also, for those using the USAMUNE practice ROM, starting on the endless staircase should be easier. You can stage skip through to the area and then adjust the number of stars back down in the menu. So long as you can still backward long jump, you don't have to stop to go back down the stairs unlike the 50 star door. It's *almost* as if the endless staircase is designed for BLJ practice! Disabling music with a GameShark code, along with adding a speed display might also be nice...

man i just wanna thank you so much for this tutorial, you helped me A LOT on getting a sub 27 i was playing sm64 for like the entire afternoon and i couldnt even get a sub 30 and just on the next run after i watched your tutorial i got a 26:33 thank you so much dude

interestingly, i have very little success with 450bpm and find that for me, the most consistent BLJs happen around 300-350. (i haven't counted exactly). i always find that the frequency of successful BLJs increases as i *lower* the tapping pace.

Great tutorial compared to the others I've seen, but I still haven't managed it even once. it's super difficult, at least on an emulator :P I've heard it's only possible due to lag, and my computer aint laggin. EDIT: Oh I actually got it now. I think I just hadn't been moving backwards before. It's not obvious since you move backwards automatically as you spam Z :)

Start by doing a regular forward long jump and once Mario starts the long jump then hold the joystick in the opposite direction and Mario will start going backwards

Try to hold your controller differently so you can mash with your pointer finger instead of your thumb, i rest the controller against my leg and mash with my pointer finger

Used to do it, can't anymore, maybe because it's a bad emulator config, or just because it's not the real hardware, definitly easier on the real thing
