  • These are a few bootleg anime booths that we found at a convention selling grey market goods from companies such as Nintendo, Studio Ghibli, Bandai, Dreamworks, etc. Please do not mention the convention this was taken at in the comments, this was purely made as an informational video to help consumers make educated purchases.
    Look at that hole in Totoro. Quality bootleg products at their finest!
    Please support the industry we all love and purchase officially licensed products. Roany's Video Game Collectibles is a retailer of official merchandise from GE Entertainment, Good Smile Company, Pokemon Center, Bandai, etc.

    There was a life size keyblade made by bandai, they just stopped producing it and now it is a collectors item or something

    Thanks for having the courage to film all these bootlegs! It's so sad that they seem to be everywhere now and most people are unaware of that fact.
    I'm a German member of the pkmncollectors community, and I've seen so many bootlegs on German cons, too. Luckily, there also were booths only selling legit stuff, which gives me hope. But, as you can imagine, the legit stuff is more expensive...

    LOL that mario nose!!! XD Bootlegs are the reason why I don't go to conventions anymore... My first experience with a bootleg was my last. The first pokemon plush I got literally fell apart: bad stitching, horribly glued on parts etc. To make matters worse, it was stuffed with fiber glass, which I am allergic to. -_-

    Went to a big anime con in atlanta last month and was surprised with all of the booths that sold so many bootleg plushes. The con even has on their site that they do not let counterfeit merch into the con but there were about 5 major booths all selling fake pokemon bootlegs. My boyfriend thought I was just being paranoid and that they all couldn't be fake but your video really opened my eyes.

    • @roanysvideogamecollectibles

      phrostfire Thank you so much for your comment. It really devalues the industry with so many fakes floating around. We are so sorry to hear your experiences at conventions have been the same in the USA. Every dealer's room contract states that no bootleg or counterfeit merchandise is allowed for sale, but most conventions don't enforce these rules. If we continue to expose these products for what they are, hopefully we will see a shift in the market with more consumers becoming aware.

    I've accidentally bought many bootlegs over the years because of a convention I used to attend where I live...Multiple vendors, but one in particular, could barely speak english and she had a stand completely full of bootleg plush. At least, I think all of them were bootleg. And she didn't sell them too cheaply, either - at least $15-20 for everything no matter how small the item.
    But anyway, thank you for making this informational video on how many conventions sell bootlegs, knowingly or not. The only reason I know about this is because I'm part of the pkmncollectors community on Livejournal, I just wish I knew how to spot a bootleg a few years ago, it would have saved me a lot of money!

    I sell video games at events, and it's very easy to spot bootleg labels and carts, even the boxes are easy to spot based on the printing quality they go with. I always inform my customers before buying when ever anything like that is involved.

    for people like me looking for true vocaloid plushie , know three easy fact about them : They can ALL sit ( they are all posable ) , The materials quality is very VERY good , and they have all their number ( normally ) on their arm ( 03 for Luka Megurine , as an example ). You can buy some online , but personally i never buy plushie under 60 dollars ( and apparently it's a good technic ). Also avoid convention and don't be attracted by low price ( i've got one bootleg of len Kagamine plushie and it literally fall appart , now i have the real one and i'm reallly happy )

    • @NatTheNoodler
      @NatTheNoodler 7 лет назад

      Len Kagamine Also they sometimes have missprints, for example I had a Rin that still said "Len" on the tag even though there was a shilouette of her on it, with a bass clef printed on her uniform instead of a treble. (Like you said before, don't order anything under priced lol)

    • @roanysvideogamecollectibles
      @roanysvideogamecollectibles  8 лет назад +7

      In Canada, conventions rarely kick out vendors for carrying bootleg merchandise, even though it's in the contracts we sign not to bring any unlicensed products. They state that it's too difficult to legally hold vendors accountable for selling bootlegs.

      From little experience, its kind of the same in my state of Arizona. I have seen bootleg merch be sold at our conventions- comic and anime, but I don't say anything to the sellers. I might ask where they got it to be sure, but that's kind of one way to tell and even then its not. :/ I sadly have bought bootlegs without knowing. My biggest hardship was buying a fake nendoroid for $40. I have only seen one honest vendor who told me where they get their products and were legit figmas and nendoroids for the actual prices. I've actually gotten better now getting an idea on what is real and fake as far as nendoroids go and certain figures.

    Brian from PokeVault is the only reason why I know about this. I had some on DA tell me and I didn't believe them but now I believe them now. I bought a couple bootlegs without realizing it in the past and after hearing it hurts Nintendo's revenue I really feel bad for people who get bootlegs. I have a friend nearby who sells Pokemon plushies and I can tell almost all of them are bootlegs but again people buy them because of two words "cute and cheap" and everyone loves things cheap. I would tell her immediately but I don't want to hurt her feelings even though it is the truth, a sad truth, and she gets all the plushies from a vendor in LA so the vendor doesn't realize it either. Hopefully someday, bootlegs will be gone for good or at least "illegal to sell online" or anywhere else. frown emoticon

    • @roanysvideogamecollectibles
      @roanysvideogamecollectibles  9 лет назад +4

      ***** "Cute and cheap" are what we hear from every attendee as well. Bootlegs are slowly killing the industry that we love. Thank you for being open minded and for trying to educate others about these despicable products.

    • @GamingFanactic911
      @GamingFanactic911 9 лет назад +2

      your welcome; as I said I was a victim of it at first and although I'm not 100% against them, being that it hurts Nintendo's revenue and has to force them to raise prices is what urks me. I mean if the bootlegs did not bother or even effect Nintendo's revenue, then those sellers can sell them all they want, but on the other hand, people will still buy the cheap ones and when Nintendo's products don't get sold, they are taken off the shelf so yeah I guess bootlegs kill either way you look at it

    I wish there was more videos about bootlegs and wish we could stop this crap because its really hurting the things that make anime/video game/comic lovers enjoy so much get ruined by these knock offs and if it keeps going like this, at this rate the real thing aka all anime/video game/comic merchandise will be shut down and the only things that will be left is fake knockoffs because the real thing is not makeing enough money and oh yeah before that happens the price of the real thing will shoot through the roof first and then it will shut down :(

    After learning that my mudkip plush and my snivy plush are both bootlegs. I decided to not order plushies on ebay or amazon. After reading an article about bootleg plushes, after watching this video it made me feel that I got ripped off by some people. But now my problem is that is it okay for me to keep these plush toys? Cheers

    • @roanysvideogamecollectibles
      @roanysvideogamecollectibles  8 лет назад +1

      +Deikaeus it's more than fine for you to keep them if you enjoy them! Many people have unofficial or bootleg plush in their collection from purchasing via amazon, etc. We always suggest supporting the official releases and purchasing from trusted sellers to receive authentic items. If you bought them without knowing though, there's no reason you shouldn't still enjoy them if they appeal to you. Have a wonderful day!

    So we can only tell if something is bootlegged by looking at the quality. That's the only indicator unless you exactly know what has been officially released?

    • @roanysvideogamecollectibles
      @roanysvideogamecollectibles  8 лет назад +3

      +Kari Medley good question! Unfortunately, it is very difficult to tell nowadays what items are bootlegs and which ones are not due to the fake versions having the exact same tags, etc. On Japanese UFO prize products such as Banpresto plush, the best thing to look for is a blue shopro sticker on the hang tags (the Dragonite in the video did not have this which is how we knew it was a bootleg.) On Bandai items, such as Sailor Moon and Digimon plush, most will have a gold Toei Animation sticker on the back of the tag (the Sailor Moon plush in the video do not have the sticker like the ones we sell in our shop.) Quality is a big indicator, make sure you are checking plush for loose stitching, figures for shoddy paint jobs, etc. It takes a while to get accurate at spotting bootlegs due to how much knowledge you need on the product's official releases. If you are ever curious about any of the products you have purchased being bootleg, we are more than happy to assist!

  • @DwightLivesMatter

    Wish I knew this yesterday, I was at a con and accidentally caved in to a $25 Banpresto plush. Later that day I bumped into a much better quality Olyfactory one for $20, but nontheless still bootleg. Obviously I feel extremely ripped off and saddened. I was well aware of knockoffs out there, but not nearly as aware as practically EVERY both having them. I agree with the other comments that those distributors should be banned.

    • @roanysvideogamecollectibles
      @roanysvideogamecollectibles  7 лет назад +1

      Banpresto is actually an official plush brand; however, there are a ton of bootlegs of those plush as they are limited to being released in Japan as prize items. The best way to check for official Banpresto merchandise is the blue Shopro sticker on the tag. Olyfactory is an unofficial plush creation factory. Usually those plush are not bootlegs of original releases (aka knockoff Pokedoll, etc.), which is why they are a bit higher quality. Thanks for watching our video!

    I went to a convention recently and accidentally walked out with a Pokémon plush without paying for it. I felt bad initially not paying for it but then when I looked at the tag and did a little bit of research I realized my plush was indeed a bootleg.
    So even though it's encouraged to not buy bootlegs because they hurt the sales of the official releases, I have to ask,
    by not paying for the bootleg plush did I do a good deed in disguise?

      Which is funny because even the owners have bad reps in the community, everyone I mentioned it to at AN basically laughed in our faces and told me quite interesting stories about dealing with the owners of the con. Plus add that it experiences I've personally had both online and during the con myself, I wasn't too surprised by their comments. Besides anyone in the Niagara area would know where this was and what it was, it is run by Niagara College students and NC is shown in the video at one point so even if I said nothing, people would know.

      +LocienDraug handmade props are an entirely different market than what is being sold here. These are mass produced prop weapons from China created in unregulated factories with no endorsement from the copyright holders. Con goers creating their own props would be considered artist goods and therefore are not bootlegs. Creating your own props is encouraged (and is super impressive may we add.) Mass produced weapons such as these are considered grey market goods.

      A $5 plush on Amazon is most likely bootleg. Bootlegs are on most of the high traffic auction sites like Ebay, Amazon, AliExpress, etc. You can try your luck, but don't pay for it expecting it to be official.
