How to Avoid Buying Bootleg DVDs on eBay

- In this video, I'm talking about my experience buying a set of DVDs from eBay that, at first, I thought seemed legitimate. However, after further investigation, I realized that the very cheap price I paid for these is very likely because they are bootlegged discs. I am still not 100% sure they are bootlegs, but I am about quite certain they are, and I'll explain more about it in this video. How to avoid buying bootleg DVDs on eBay? One simple rule is, if the deal is too good to be true, it probably is.
Here is the link to the original unboxing of these Fairly Odd Parents DVDs that I ordered from eBay: • Unboxing BOOTLEG Copie...
Everyone please spam Shout Factory and Paramount and ask them to make set for this show!! This show is my childhood lol
One time I ordered baby looney tunes dvds on ebay from someone, my problem with them wasn't that they were bootlegs, they arrived damaged, here's the catch though, it was listed as new, i sent it back and ordered them from amazon, and a couple days later i look on ebay and notice that the seller was selling the same dvds, that made me raise an eyebrow
The “DVD” logo looks like a boot leg
Flicks ‘n bricks studios but I like both
You do realize that the Fairly Odd parents DVDs are basically official bootlegs.
When it comes to new titles, legit copies are more expensive on eBay than typical stores.
not always like if it's hard to get like the teen titans season before the re realise oh wait it was not legit but it was a good deal
It depends. People price gouge stuff that’s out of print or not out yet and then it turns out it’s counterfeit.
I don't hate bootleg copies,if they work then I'm fine,but if they don't work,then I'm furious
I never buy any object if its a stock photo on ebay,i only look for actual photos
Dakota Watson me too
Me to I am the same way I only buy a dvd if I see a actual photo and then all buy it
also if its a fuzzy picture, i wouldnt buy
Bootleg DVDs are a scam
I hope paramount does the fairly oddparents seasons someday like they did with spongebob and rugrats
I'd still buy it personally.
I mean, if you don't care that it is bootleg, then it is a good way to save money.
J's Blu-Rays i bought alot of bootlegs recently because the official distributor made terrible discs i lost hundreds of dollars from defective discs, i made a complaint, they did nothing, so...😆
Skywalker Hunter I hear those bootleg guys have great customer service!
@@skywalkerhunter95 How are the picture and sound quality?. i saw some are dark color disk blu ray (Copy).
@@skywalkerhunter95 I only messed up once because I bought a teen titans complete series and there's no special features and the episodes are like you have to play each one but I bought it before it was re realised so it's not that bad
Another small idea to is to see if its fake is to look at the quantity of the item cause the people who do those who make the bootlegs make more to make more money on them, aldo this may not be the case everytime. Usually its more then 4 or 5..
depends on the disc but bootlegs can be pretty ok
but if you are spending a lot than yea make sure you get it legit
Is this a bootleg as it stock photo and seems too goid to be true. Also they have 3 available and yet sold 9 sets 😕 also the seller is 'uk' based yet it is all region 1 stuff would have had to be imported
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CN-Adventure-Time-Complete-Series-1-10-Collection-DVD-Single-Season-Box-Set-USA-/193852361056?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286
If you see the seller selling the same DVD like 500 copies sold then its a red flag he's a bootlegger.
I never got a bootleg DVD from there, but I did bootleg a bootleg VHS though (I could tell straight away by the cover, and when played, it was a 2nd-generation copy)
all you have to do is install DVD Shrink on your PC. Stick the DVD in the Drive and run DVD Shrink. If it has copy protection, then its real. if there is no copy protection its a bootleg.. Easy as that. Also, all the bootlegs on ebay are single layer Discs(4.7GB), while most real Discs are Double Layer (8.5GB).
I'll remember that for next time, thank you. But I did end up sending these back, so I can't try that now.
Yeah, I knew you did. I have bought several bootlegs off ebay and know all to well how to tell if they are fakes. The good thing is that I did get my money back on all of them. But yeah, the disc is the key to telling for sure. Bootlegers cant copy the copy protection that the studios put on them. Plus, they are so cheap, they put them all on Single Layer 4.7GB discs, when the original is 8.5 GB Double Layer Discs.
Retro Media Guy does this work with blu rays?
Will you buy new Nickelodeon series on dvd
I will, yes
I fell bad for you man
Nah, it's not a big deal. I'm getting my money back. It's really a good learning experience.
J's Blu-Rays oh ok
J-Blurays, Would you mind looking at a ebay auction I'm interested in seeing if its legit I'll send you a dm if that's ok
Sure, I'd be glad to.
ok I sent it
I purchased The Three Stooges Collection, Andy Griffith Complete Series, The Wonder years on eBay. They looked real. But I checked them out with a DVD checker and found they had no encryption on them. That's not always a red flag however but also, the originals shows my neighbor had are on DVD-9 dual-layer DVDs. The ones I got on eBay were single-layer DVDs. The video was also compressed and didn't look as good as the originals. One seller sent my item but eBay shut them down so I didn't pay for them. Another seller still sells them. If you see a stock photo and not the actual item that should be a red flag. Also I noticed my Blu-ray player made some noise when I played the bootleg copies. I find the best place to buy them now is on places like amazon.
Thats a good tactic, i have come across Mr Bean Collection, The Whole Bean by A&E a 3 disc set which i had a copy not original that was on dual layer disc, 7-8GB the original that i purchased was the same DVD but on a Single Layer Disc 4.37gb and the quality was poor, the disc was a silver pressed disc, shows how DVD's from China may fool you believing you are buying an authentic item. The packaging on the discs look like a genuine released item but it comes to the video quality if its not pleasing to the eye than its a pirate copy. Also check the cover packaging if the print is dull and the brightness, contrast is dull its not an original.

Been buying a lot of movies lately, got a DVD of the new movie Venom, not cheap, was 10 bucks but I was still suspicious when it came, it "looked" a bit "Off", kinda faded or washed out cover. Went looking around the net and found out the huge bootleg problem on there where New dvds are concerned. I found out you can use the Nero Info Tool to find out, do they have a region code, do they have copyright protection, are they dual layer or single? Sure enough, even though the Venom case said region 1, the region code was "All" (Also fakes will say N/A sometimes. it was single layer and the copyright code? was N/A. It was a FAKE. I then checked a bunch of my others and was able to see what legit disks info looked like, I found 6 the last "Brand New" 20 dvds I bought were Fakes. The problem is HUGE obviously and Ebay does NOTHING about it. Honestly though Amazon and even Stores like Best Buy sell these same fakes. They work fine, and most of the time, unlike the Washed out faded cover of Venom, you'll never think unless you use a tool like Nero Info Tool on the disk that it's fake. Very sad. I'm glad to have the movie, but I feel disgusted that it's a bootleg. They really should do something about this problem.
My story is similar to yours. I got duped twice on eBay. Both were reasonably priced sets for DVDs now out of print. Had I not been ripping my collection to Plex I would have never known. makemkv tipped me off when I got an error that said the media might have been made with Mac the Ripper. Did some research, found Nero Info Tool and checked it out. When I got a legit copy and compared them, the colors on the case were slightly different and the printing on the discs was faded on the bootlegs. Since then I've been more careful.
Bootlegs should be BANNED by law.

I'm pretty sure they are. But they are everywhere, so I feel like it's really difficult to stop it.

Was the quality of the episodes good?
Hey Jay! Guess what? well I know you're not interested in this show that I like but I looked at the My Little Pony friendship is magic seasons 1-6 dvd bundle that listing has the same description as the fairly oddparents DVDs and are sold by the same seller so I said "Heh I ain't buying no illegal bootleg movies I'm gonna skip you and focus on the real pictures and official good unspam sellers!" So do you agree with me?
@Jiggly yes
@Jiggly nice I don't care about the show though
i don't like bootleg dvd they are atrocious and i like the real dvd and blu ray

I have been scammed with a few bootlegs but I have bought 90% of my movies used from Ebay very cheaply and in like new condition. Amazon is too damn expensive with their sales tax on top of their shipping costs. I don't get why people say Amazon is cheaper, no they aren't.
It's cheaper depending on which country you are from. From example, I am from Canada so I do not have to pay shipping costs nor do I have to worry about Canadian dollars converting to American. But I still love using ebay because I find that American sites have so much more to offer (depending on what you are looking for) and sometimes Amazon just has squat. I collect plenty of figures and toys so 90% of the time in my experience I can only find these on ebay, especially if they are antiques or of higher value.
Gleaming the Cube is Bootleg on EBay on DVD and Blue ray. I bought both. The Blue ray seller removed the listing before I could leave a review. The DVD seller has 99% feedback, and my negative feedback was removed. I will never buy another movie off the internet. Pawn shops sell used DVDs for $1 each, and some are new. Then I reported the DVD sellers listing as fraudulent. I think EbAy is behind these bootleg movies, and other scams they do not remove.
Nice for the future people that buys stuff on eBay
If I make one when. I am 18 then I will rewatch this
I'm 18.
I once bought a bootleg VeggieTales Lord of the Beans DVD off Facebook marketplace, thought it was a rare edition and not a bootleg until a friend on Discord pointed it out as bootleg. When playing it the video wasn't different though from the official
Some rather have bootleg then not have it at all
lol Amazon makes Nickelodeon DVDs on demand with dvd-r hmmmm must be bootlegs haha
What about if it's cheap and has the shrink wrap with the triangles like how it is at the store?
Don’t worry. If I buy DVDs on eBay, they’re not bootleg. For example, if I would buy Home Sweet Pineapple, I know which one to find.
We all should also avoid getting bootleg VHS tapes too. Two things you can tell if it’s a bootleg VHS is that it has a tab and it was prerecorded in theaters.
Who the fuck uses vhs tapes now?!

hi jay thank you for posting this video and the other one to. I enjoy watching your videos on youtube.this video it help me understand what to look out for on ebay. I shop on ebay all the time. I shop on amazon off and on.I think I got a bootlegs dvd set. it was Grey's Anatomy Season DVD Lot: Seasons 1-10 the seller I bought it from was Seller DVD4U It was back In 2015. the artwork on some of the dvd cases does not look that good.. it looks a little fuzzy like It was done on a cheap printer they used to print the covers out. some of the discs looked fuzzy to like season 6, 7, 8 the main 3 that looked the worst. the price was $105.98 USD. I`m not sure if that was a good price or not. for all 10 season bundle.the thing that upset me the most was there was a couple of discs that were cracked and could not be played in a player.the seasons that had cacked discs were season 1, season 3, season 5, season 8. I think it was one disc out of each set. season 1 and season 5 were the seasons that had the worst cracked discs.I have the official dvd seasons 11 and 12 of greys anatomy. yep you have to stay alert at all time. because people try anything to get your money.thanks again for posting the ebay video.
Those are Amazon exclusives and they are real and I have season 6
I got scammed when I received a bootleg copy of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection... is there any solutions on how I get my money back?
It depends where you bought it from.
I got no problem with non legit DVDs provided A: They play fine and B, They are the uncut episodes and not the trash that TV has become..when you're trying to watch the show or movie it suddenly has popups: You're watching..Up next is..And don't forget to go to www--, And worse still is at the ending, If a announcer is telling something how something ends..For example: Ben moved away to Ohio, Sadly Sally died,Joe was able to...Next is (show) and Bill and June must battle to the death bla,bla,bla..Don't miss (show) next on THIS SUCKS ASS TV. That is the reason I quit watching TV and get my show fix online, So the last thing I'd want to find out is a DVD set I bought of a show on Ebay is recorded off TV and subjects me to the same stupid popup ads and announcer that don't know when to STFU at the end of it.
Just buying from the official company and you won't have to wonder
I bought a lot of TV box sets : facts of life, saved by the bell, Maude, golden girls all were bootleg the packaging was convincing but the picture quality was horrible.
there are some very dishonest sellers on ebay, thank you for the informative video!
Here's a link to your original upload of this video: ruclips.net/video/IiVRmv6LvSI/видео.html (went unlisted and eventually deleted)
I deleted it because it had audio issues.
Yeah, I remember that. The audio was mute in the original video.
FAIRIES
The only reason I would be fine with getting a bootleg would be if all authentic copies are region locked.
In this case, I don't think the authentic copies are region locked.
I wonder what would happen if you scan the barcodes.
uggh bootleg dvds
Can You do Please do a review and unboxing Baby Dolittle World Animals 2001 vhs please
No.
Dude what about amazon, any idea? Cuz many ppl are saying that cocos fake copies are sold at amazon. Its same for wonder woman 3d so any idea? Thnkx Btw!!i know that its a trusted web but recent reviews arent good. Thnkx again👍🏼
Spectral Grey Amazon 3rd party sellers likely have the same problems as eBay. I would be cautious with that as well. Sold directly from Amazon should be authentic though.
J's Blu-Rays so the ones which are sold by amazon they re the authentic copies, right? thx alot man, it really helped
Yea I bought curb your enthusiasm on ebay complete series 38 dollars its probably a bootleg bug get the job done and plays well king of the hill complete series 70 dollars probably a bootleg from ebay but they play fine and look legit but there probably not it's no big deal to me as long as the artwork looks real and the discs have a image
To each their own. I've been tempted many times to buy some bootlegs just because the stuff isn't available in any other physical format. I imagine there definitely are some good bootlegs out there.
@@JsBluRaysI’ve seen some Garfield and friends volume 1-5 dvd bundles for only 40$ and they do look real die to the fact that pictures are provided, I’m not sure if I should get it, however, my best suggestion is go to a thrift shop to find them
This is a common problem in the world of home media because it is too difficult to police this type of thing effectively. A perfect example of this is the reissued "The Complete Saga" Blu-ray set of the Star Wars films released in 2015 in which bootleggers are creating fake packages utilizing very convincing fabrications of the same artwork as the authentic release, these often have either duplicated burned discs or repackages of legit older DVD copies for both the prequels and original trilogy that do not match the current product on the shelves. Somebody who is not in the know about what they are buying from auction sites can very easily get suckered by one of these bootleg 12 disc saga sets and not even realize it's a fake just from looking at the images online without prior knowledge. It is very important everyone knows that there is no DVD version of the complete saga, as in does not exist in an official capacity in any way shape or form.
That shows just how the operation of bootlegging home video products has evolved over time, for now barring a few subtle or minute differences these can almost pass for the real deal.
Justin Middleton bc people couldn't afford it now it finally drop prove for 50 on blu-ray
+Donnell Coleman But that right there shows just how these types of bootlegs have evolved from the days of stupid cover artwork and inaccurate information, as nowadays the people doing this can create almost perfect duplications of legit home video releases and pass them off as such on websites like Amazon and eBay. The aforementioned complete saga DVD sets are indicators of just how sophisticated and clever the bootleggers have gotten in making their creations look as authentic as possible.
Make sure that you know that what you are buying is the real, official product and always verify when purchasing from auction sites.
I Still Buy From eBay, I Actually Use It A Lot More Than Amazon, & So Far I Didn’t Get Any Bootlegs, I Would Hate It If I End Up With Any.
I would have to agree with you and also if you want to keep your self from getting bootlegs I would recommend just looking at stock images rather than real images. No pressure, I'm just saying.
@@CreatorofToonTownStories and if u see a bunch of negatives and saying "Bootling!!!", then don't buy it
Bootleg DVDs are illegal now people will get in trouble for selling bootleg DVDs somebody tried to sell me a bootleg DVD of Annabelle comes home on DVD I rejected his offer I don't buy bootleg DVDs anymore
Enjoyed the video. I also received a bootleg copy of a King of the Hill DVD. If you want photos let me know.
Please help! I think I got fooled. I purchased Spider-Man: TAS and I am sure it is a fake, because the show never got a complete release in the USA. What should I do? I contacted the seller but didn’t get much. The problem is I don’t think I can file a SNAD file because the DVD set seems fake altogether, yet EBay allowed it to be sold.
Thanks I was thinking about getting some complete series on DVD on ebay but I didn't know if they were legit or not since they are cheap but idk
I got inside a JX on June 2, 2018, but 4 years later on an RB on 25 January 2022
Ebay is supposed to be a website were you buy second hand and used stuff and at the same time you going to find bootleg stuff like DVDs I have the real deal and not bootleg DVDs the spongebob 1000 episode set is basically the same it has all of the seasons put together in one box set so I would recommend the 1000 spongebob episode box set if you all of the seasons of spongebob on DVD and avoid theses bootlegs there are a complete waste of money I don't really have the 1000 episode box set but I have the official spongebobs and there they are the original releases
I know this is unrelated, but it's on the subject of bootlegs/knockoffs. One time as a birthday present I got a knockoff transformers figure (an old collectors club exclusive) from ebay and was pissed when i found out it was a knockoff. I also almost bought a knockoff Generation 1 Optimus prime from china on ebay.
Aww man
Fye wouldn't take bootleg or Amazon mods dvd n blu-ray
Did you do the dual layer check on the later seasons. As they came on DL discs. if they are smaller than 8.5GB or is 4.7GB or smaller they are certainly faked.
dude u can clone a dvd9 with a dvd9 no compression that's a dumb statement to say it's a bootleg haha
Are vhs tapes okay to buy on eBay???
I thought with bootlegs you can see the burned data on back of disk?
How's the quality? Did you play the disc?
tanquantwal he already said he did on his computer
Sadly, after realising if a deal sounds too good to be true for a dvd then it is probably bootlegged. I went in buying the item with good intentions, figuring that I will finally have a hard copy of my favorite show. I tried to nicely request a cancellation to my order by making up some kind of excuse so I told the buyer that I accidentally bought a dvd with the wrong region code. I figured all would be said and done but the buyer assured me not to worry as the dvd will play in all region codes... that seems even fishier to me now. I really hope that I actually did get a good deal when it comes in and the buyer does seem to have mostly positive feedback and has sold over one hundred thousand items as well as a handful of the dvds. They have positive reviews as well but I'm wondering if they are selling bootlegged dvds and the buyers just don't care that they have been bootlegged. I'm sorry about your experience as well, it's strangely disheartening to realize something like this.
if you care that there bootleg just complain to ebay
The artwork looks like it was left in the sun for to long and the cases look cheaper then the official Amazon releases

No. Not if the originals are DVD-R. If you got something like a Disney movie that was released widely in stores and it has a purple bottom, then you should be concerned

First of all what is this grown ass man doing watching Fairly Odd parents??🤔
They are nostalgic shows that I used to watch when I was a kid. I don't really watch shows like this too often anymore, but I have made a hobby out of collecting them on DVD/Blu-Ray because I find it very fun to collect them and have the option to watch them on rare occasions whenever I want.
There's no age limit on these cartoons.
What is a grown ass man doing celebrating his birthday and wasting hard earned money on a birthday cake? Does that argument sound stupid? If so, then your argument on an adult watching children's shows is also stupid.
I agree with you on that. Adults can do whatever they want
