  • Signs You Are In a Toxic Workplace and How to deal with Toxic Work Environment. Are you caught up in a toxic workplace and in a toxic work environment, bad work environment which only holds back your career and penalizes your emotional health? I already published a few videos on toxic management and an unhealthy work environment. Many continue asking me toxic boss and signs of a toxic workplace, so in this video I am exposing 5 signs of a toxic work environment, I also share 3 main tips on how to deal with a toxic boss and a bad work environment. Workplace culture dictates how employees behave, make decisions, and interact with each other in the office. A positive company and empowering culture leads to happy and engaged team members and to incredible productivity levels. A toxic culture leads to completely the opposite, to gossip, rumours, judgemental attitude and disrespect.
First sign of a toxic workplace is when Your boss is a bully and a bad leader. Every toxic workplace starts with toxic leadership. Which means bad or narcissistic toxic bosses are those who create and install the toxic culture. Many times employees do not realize that their boss is bullying them. Instead, they believe that they have a tough boss or a manager that simply pushes employees to get results.
Typically, toxic bosses are a tremendous pressure at work. They love control and they feed off your emotional reaction.
    2. There is a fear of speaking up. Employees fear speaking up because management is genuinely hostile about a different opinion. It’s not safe to speak up since the reaction might be completely unpredictable.
    3. Constant office gossip and rumors. Some office hearsay can be considered normal, even though it doesn’t have any benefits! But constant gossip and rumors about your colleagues’ personal lives, the judgemental gossip, makes it clear that your workplace is indeed toxic. If you feel that your average day at work is like a reality tv show with a lot of constant drama. If people don’t openly say things but prefer whispering behind others’ back, all of that is a HUGE red flag.
    4. When company culture feels like a “cult”. Does the company culture go too far to position the workplace as a replacement for family and friends? You feel that everyone is encouraged to center their lives around the job, the work is EVERYTHING. There is hardly time for leisure, family or friends. It’s like you’ve joined a cult without even knowing it...

i started a new job managed by a unexperienced new toxic boss. Since i needed the money, i decided to bear up and do my best to satisfy him. There was no single night that i slept well and there was no single weekend that i didn't do extra work. He enjoyed my weakness when i begged him to give me a second chance each time he blamed me on anything that is not really a big deal. He accused me of things i didn't do either. When i was proving him wrong, he behaved like, yes but....
After several months, he decided to fire me in order to show that he is idealistic manager who raises the bar. there were teammates who did mistakes horrible than me and performed worse than me but somehow, since i was fresh in the team, he marked me.
My lesson is never to work under a new manager and not to try to satisfy a bully manager. just like marat said in the other video about signs of toxic boss.

@@exhesham There is absolutely no way you could have made things work under toxic management. No matter what you would have done, he would have still been abusive towards everything you do. So the firing is definitely a blessing in this case, even though I imagine you have gone through hell during all that time.
It's great that you've put this experience behind and arrived to the conclusion of never putting up with anything similar. I hope you stay positive and inspired, a great new opportunity will definitely come along soon.

"Every toxic workplace starts with toxic leadership" so true! Unfortunately, toxic bosses can also hide in plain site behind a demeanor of loving and caring leaders. Survival in a toxic workplace is dependent on working on your mindset and emotions and staying focused on the big picture and the things that really matter for your professional success. Do not be afraid from taking difficult decisions to carve out the career path that you want and deserve. Thank you for the video!

I was and I am in a toxic place and had suffered enough to be able to see the difference between what is good and what is not right. Generally in toxic societies people who are not blind to it many times stay trapped in the system because whenever they want to earn money they end up getting low wages (as being in a toxic workplace) and this gives then no chance to save up enough finances to be able to leave and stay afloat. It is terrible. I feel very frustrated. Exhausted because to be employed in a toxic culture I end up being literally energetically sucked up.Sometimes I am truly afraid there is no way of leaving and living a better life. I had dealt with different toxic people but the boss which I had for 2 years, who was initially nice and who even wanted to hang out after work turn into an absolute nightmare. She started humiliating me in front of people, tried to make sure that no one would even talk to me. I was so depressed but one day I walked to my desk, grabbed my things and told her that I quit. She was not expecting that and immediately went into a panic, knowing that I was essential to that company and without me, there would be serious issues for them. I walked out and have never in my life felt more free than I did in that moment. Doing this isn't always easy, or even possible, for people but I had saved up enough money so that I was able to quit that day and never look back. She would continue to bombard me with texts, emails and communication via social media for about a year after the fact, until she finally got the hint that she was no longer welcome in my life in any way. I have dealt with a lot of toxic people in my life, but this woman was by far the absolute WORST.

I'm so proud of you and the courage it took for you to stand up for yourself. I'm currently in a similar situation with a manager who joined our office since February who right away started talking badly about my coworkers in front of me saying they are bad at their jobs (she trained one of them!). I wondered to myself what she must be saying about me behind my back. I found out quickly when I heard her laughing about a mistake I made I front of a customer. I confronted her about it and said I didn't appreciate her shaming me and she said "well you made a stupid mistake" but the mistake wasn't a big deal. It doesn't matter to her the only thing that matters to her is making sure she can control people. Then she fired one girl in order to benefit her favourite worker. Within a week alarm bells were going off in my head about her. She wanted to change things that there was nothing wrong with and we had running smoothly and honestly I used to love going to work but now I dread it. She is also manipulating the bosses against me and wrote me up yesterday for something I was doing for months and never EVER did anyone say anything to me about it. It came completely out of the blue and I know she did it as revenged against me because one of my bosses overheard her saying nasty things to me. I never thought I would want to leave this place because it's such a great place to work without her there but I foresee it only getting worse. I don't feel like I can talk with my bosses about it because she is SO manipulative.

I completely agree especially with point 3. My experience in a nutshell: I have been working in a ToxicOffice for 3 years by now. Every day there is absurd amount of trash talk and gossip (it is the worst type of open plan office, small room fully packed with around 20 people, half of which is in love with their own voices). Not only I am not interested in hearing that or even joining endless debates about bs, that also devastated concentration which my quite hard work requires. When I began wearing noise cancelling earplugs in order to be even able to work, they began ignoring and gossiping me, complaining that I am "weird" and other such stuff. It continually grew worse, even though I tried to explain that. It seemed that this was taken as a personal insult by some. What came later: Backstabbing, even more gossiping, work sabotage by not telling work information, refusal to work with me at all, open disdain towards me, gaslighting (when I complained). I got finally fed up with that and leaving the company. I am able to deal with stressing and difficult job, but to additionally cope with extremely toxic and even more stressful environment is too much.

I hate workplaces where people gossip. Hate it. It annoys me, consumes my good energy and replace it with dread. It drains a person. When I see someone starting a conversation, gossiping about someone, I cut it right out. I have learned. It doesn't contribute to anything.
There's also the toxic type of college who thinks you are a free therapists or a place to drop all the complains at. Like a garbage can of complains. It's ok to complain sometimes, we are human, but some people have no limits. Even when you tell them. Everything sucks, everything is difficult. I don't need that kind of mindset at work. It sucks the same amount for all!
I am a positive person, everyday, I wake up with a good attitude and separate personal problems and work. Or try at least. So when I have someone in the near who doesn't even try, it is so tiring. This people drain people who have empathy.
They don't respect boundaries and it's making me miserable. I am now putting limits, but I already feel that I am becoming more negative myself.

    • @myemmotion
      @myemmotion  3 года назад +2

I know exactly what you mean. It's already well known that negative energy attracts more negative energy in return, so such people eventually drain your energy and infect you with their mindset in a certain way. It is good that you set the boundaries and won't take constant complaints and negative comments.
It's complicated to see through the gossip when the whole company culture is based on it, it's like you either fit in or you don't. But there IS a way of not participating in it, and in a long run it's the best decision one can take.

For this kind of situation,I'm in a group in the church and we had to choose someone to take charge of the group. They chose a girl who was a few years older than me(I was 16 at the time and she was 18) and she had a few years of experience at the previous place she was(still less than me and my brother),the criteria required to be in charge was in her favour and that's why she was chosen.
However as time passed, things got worse and is still now and that girl whose normally the boss is the big reason why.Even since she came we have never got a serious discussion about the group and everytime I try,she finds a way to leave or skip the discussion. She only values her "friends" and doesn't care about the others. She keeps demoralising others especially those who needs the most help. She always wants to be in control and is always offended anytime we give her a negative feedback and always act as the innocent one and me the bad guy.She brings fear, division, bad authority and distrust in our group that mostly everyone is afraid of her,so I'm the one standing up against her and the others words pass by me.
Our group is in a sort of crisis now and those causing it are also those who are unaware of it.I wanted to quit the group because of that, the toxic environment there and that it's affecting my mental health in certain ways. But I love this group where I've dedicated a big part of my life in it,the "HR" if I can call him at that trust me a lot also due to my willingness in making our group better and I don't want to abandon my group and the people involved in it.I want to save it from a bad, toxic, incompetent, hypocrite, narcissistic, liar, lazy, fake, selfish, useless and evil boss she is since I'm one of the leaders of the group but I want to leave too because I can't stand her and see the group fall because of her knowing I was right.

For example, I have build relationships with many employers in my local community. I work 3 jobs and also on another 2-3 employers books as casuals. My wife also has a full time job as well. I did this because I simply do not trust employers (had way too many bad experiences with wage theft, ask to do shady or illegal activities, placed on performance plans, was looked over for promotion (even though I was objectively the best employee on the team )over boss’s daughter etc) and allows me to toss an employer in the bin (with one phone call) (if they start pulling the BS). I highly recommend people to have at-least one gig on the side. I hope this helps.

If we only had a habit of changing roles all for once. So an ordinary worker should be trained to lead a small team and big bosses should take on the role of lowest employee for a while. I think most people (me too ) easily get used to power and "harmless jokes" might follow very soon. I always see a job as a play where year after year the same people are the hero while others always are always the hardly noticed extra's. In the end those roles change your self perception too. Perhaps in a economy of co-ops this pain can be avoided.

    • @myemmotion

I agree that it's difficult to keep things in perspective when you do not experience such situations on a daily basis. Generally human beings get a stronger sense of empathy ONLY after having lived through difficult or "sensitive" moments themselves. So exchanging the roles like this would definitely help to run things better for the employee and the company. But you have to agree that the majority of bosses would hardly give such idea a second thought.

But the longer a toxic experience goes on, the more worn off we feel and eventually causes damage which is hard to repare. Especially the self esteem issues, which are directly related to toxic management.

@@MarcosRodriguez-es4gz I do agree. It does depend on each situation, but it is important to keep it positive no matter what.
