    Bro you have such a beast PC, I would be surprised if you had any lag for anything. Also 45ms is such a small amount of lagg, 1000ms is 1 second. were talking 1/20th of a second lag. Most projectors, even gaming projectors have 120ms + of lag.

    Love the stabilization feature for sitting experience like sims or forward-facing experiences, but it's a poor feature for recording games such as shooters when you may shift your gaze quickly left or right. For those curious as to how it functions, essentially it's a floating camera that follows your head movements instead of it being a composite of the exact image you're seeing. The games still only render what is necessary for your headset's fov, leading to there being a black void beyond what's being rendered, and as long as the floating camera drags behind your quick head movements, these black edges becoming visible as a distracting momentary black edge during recordings. Still great if the user keeps this in mind and sticks to artificial turning for the sake of the recording, though, but rougher for casual streaming purposes.

    • @PaultheSimRacer
      @PaultheSimRacer  3 года назад +4

      So I don't think the VD latency is the true motion to photon latency. It's been discussed on reddit quite a bit - I think the latency you see in VD (22ms) is actually the latency of Virtual Desktop ... which is then ON TOP of the underlying motion to photon latency that you have in the headset (which is what I show here) - that aligns to the reality of the experience. So let's say there's 30-40ms in the headset normally ... having 22ms in VD on a good wireless setup = total 60ms (which is still okay), but explains why when then people have 40-50+ ms in VD it feels horrible (as in reality they have 90-100ms)

    • @PaultheSimRacer

      I'd say - it all comes down to your IPD (distance between your eyes) - Rift S doesn't have adjustment for it which is why I couldn't use it. If yours is in the normal range and you're going to be doing PC gaming - go Rift S I think.

    Awesome video, currently using a Rift S with a Reverb G2 on verrryyy late order( maybe i'll get it by 2021). Saw the v23 update yesterday and figured it might be good to get a Quest 2 and try it since Facebook offers 30 day returns. Glad to see an iracing video which is mostly what I'm looking to use it on. I'll probably keep the Quest but use the Reverb for sim racing for the extra FOV when it arrives. The reviews say the controllers are a step down and the tracking can be hit or miss, so if its that bad I'll keep the quest for non sim games.

    • @PaultheSimRacer
      @PaultheSimRacer  3 года назад +1

      yeah and also you can use the quest for pc gaming completely wirelessly if you have a wifi 6 router (not really that great for sim racing but good for things like HL Alyx - check my other video for more details!)

    This is a good chunk of information that answered almost every question I would have had. However, while I know this video is now a few months old, I still am curious: Has anyone else has issues running SimHub [transducers+windsim] while using a Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop? I can't get SimHub to send data to my gadgets while running VD, even with audio streaming disabled, regardless of which sim I'm running [AC, ACC, Pcars, Pcars2, Dirt Rally 2.0 are what I have]. Thoughts, anyone? I can still use VoiceMeeter to split my audio stream to both my bluetooth headphones and the USB sound card [that runs the transducer], for simple bass shaking, if that helps confuse things even further =D

    my quest 2 headset is bad and going back but I've done my own quick comparisons and still done my recent races with cv1
    screen door being gone, that's fantastic and I don't tend to care or actively look at it when using my cv1 but its a notable step up when switching between the 2 now....however,
    if you run link settings at the normal 1.0 res scale ( which most will need to on sims for a solid 90fps ) it gives some bad jaggies and blocky details you don't get with cv1 and really makes the small tight together details like gauge printings no better than cv1 due to the pixels not matching up, its probably more distracting than it should be due to the screen door no longer being there, but for fast moving stuff like sims its quite distracting and breaks that immersion more than a screen door you sort of forget about while racing.
    to solve that aliasing issue you need to be running 1.7 in link settings as it is the native resolution of the headset but good luck running your games at 90fps unless you have the very latest and best hardware, with the extra strain comes higher frametimes, doesn't matter if you just got a 3080, its still got to do donkey work through your usb bus ie cpu too, its overall more demanding on the computer than the old simple pcvr video and data cable and cpu bound stuff like project cars series, its the difference of playing 90fps with supersampling on cv1 to stuck in 45fps (was 36 before update and that really sucked) on link on the same game settings negating any visual increase.
    for me, my hardware is really not ready for max resolution and a solid 90fps (6700k oc, gtx 1070oc ) and if it was, there is g2 at the moment looking very promising for just sim racing, as much as I'm invested into the oculus eco system and will continue to buy the headsets, I'm pissed they want to go forward with link only, link is always going to be that bonus to quest, not a replacement for my pcvr, its too finicky, still buggy, still not 'chuck on your head after a mouse click' ready and most annoyingly, will straight up screw you over when it crashes or loses guardian which can happen for no reason sometimes by simply taking headset off and resting it down while you have a pee break or whatever.
    don't get me wrong, its incredible how they've achieved it and adds loads of value to a cheap headset and really is awesome for me and my offline use moving the wheel stand into in the man cave,, no sensors or even a monitor to worry about just tower and headset, but its reliability has been questionable since quest 1 and still happening now with the random image loss, regardless of cable, usb ports powered or non powered, it'll keep tracking you head on your mirror display but just go dead in headset with no way to get back.
    fine for what it is and you can restart your game doing single player as its not all that common but online racing in a league? too risky and not for me.
    crucially, and this may be my shit headset although videos online suggest its the norm, the field of view and overall clarity to the edge is terrible compared to my cv1, my ipd is 63, setting 2, its a stark difference of just how much more I can see on the sides with the cv1, like the quest 2 render is zoomed in, quest 1 was certainly not this bad, its the difference of seeing a wing mirror in my peripheral or not depending on car just by changing vr headset.
    also with regards to the debug smoothing, you can increase the view multiplier to get it back to how you naturally view things, as smoothing zooms it in, but you then have the black bars that will show up when you move too fast like your video, I find increasing view then cropping the capture can give you that wider and taller fov recording but is an extra step and can still show bars in fast movement.

      Sorry to disappoint you but the G2 with it's 2160×2160 resolution per eye will be even more demanding on your computer.

After owning one of those for 2 years and now upgrading to a second hand gt omega art cockpit second hand for just over £200 I can say it’s night and day having a rigid rig that far comfier to sit in. Surely with everything else you can afford a slightly better rig?

      Hey Phil, yeah I can afford a much better rig for sure - just don't have any space to put one. If you watch my original playseat challenge review you'll see why I had to go for it - tiny 1 bedroom flat in london - the playseat folds away neatly in the cupboard when not using it. One day I'll hopefully move somewhere bigger and maybe have a dedicated room which a decent sim rig can be built in :)

I’ve never tried a club sport 2.5 but know it will have stronger vibrations than my thrustmaster but even on mine with a more sturdy rig you can feel the vibrations now through the whole rig which is cool. Due to the flex on the challenge a lot of the vibration is lost

    Hi, great channel you have here :) Im in the process of getting equipment good enough for VR simracing, and there is one thing i may have overlooked here on the Quest 2. The stabilizer, is it only for getting smooth footage on recorded video's, or does it do anything to the view inside the actual Quest 2? I'm of course looking at getting a really smooth image on the quest 2 as i cant handle any choppy pic on the VR when racing. Maybe its not possible yet, but if i can get a smooth stabilized pic with the quest 2, if may buy it. An example of what i experience with regular monitors, is that if i run without vsync at let say 70-80 fps, i feel the pic is much more choppy then than if i manage 70-80 fps without vsync, but turn vsync on at 60hz. So i always adjust graphics for steady above 60 fps without vsync, then turn vsync on. If you can help on this topic i would appreciate. Is it also so that i need above 72 fps steady on monitor, to get a smooth pic on the quest 2, using the 72hz setting?. Optimizing the equipment for VR in simracing is really important before getting parts it seems like.

    • @PaultheSimRacer
      @PaultheSimRacer  3 года назад

      It's only stabilising the recorded footage / mirror. But I meant stable as in moving around - rather than stable FPS. I think it's usable at 72hz on the quest 2 - but 90hz is a lot more comfortable to use.

    • @hansottosmotos
      @hansottosmotos 3 года назад

      @@PaultheSimRacer Yes, i thought so that only on the recorded video. But is the headset working the same as a monitor when it comes to the refreshrate? I mean can you adjust things shown in the headset without sync to get a fps stable over lets say the 72 setting, then lock the sync on the headset to 72, so headset limits the fps to 72, to get it stable? So maybe can use something a little lower than the 3080 to get a smooth pic? Thanks for the reply, btw. :)

    Would you recommend a Quest 2 when my specs are:
    16 GB Ram
    Nvidia RTX 2070
    Ryzen 2600x ? I want to start with Simracing but atm I am not sure if I should choose a Tripple Screen setup instead of VR..

      If you have the space for triples - I think you can have a more comfortable experience right now - but VR is more immersive. I don't have the space for triples, so always race in VR.

      @@PaultheSimRacer Thank you yeah my first Idea was to buy a ryzen 9 3900x for ACC and Halif Life etc . But the problem is I am wearing glasses so I need to buy extra lenses for about 100€ because I can't play with contact lenses :/ ( Rent a VR couple of months ago)
      So I think I will go with the QUest 2 from eBay for roundabout 250€ :P I need this awesome feeling like in VR again. :D

      Yeah I think so - may need to turn graphics down a bit though.

    Latency should be at least 2/3 90fps ie 16ms above that well you are seeing 90fps video with 25fps reaction time, not good.

    I dont understand why when I start Oculus Link app, the image with the white grid background is pretty sharp, but when I start Steam VR, the image gets pretty blurry, and while the games are looking beautiful in my PC, the image I have on the Oculus headset is bad, I can see compression very obviously and I feel some lost frames while playing beat saber for example. I dont understand... it is connected into a 3.0 USB port, the speed is similar to the one of this video, but it is still not looking good enough... Maybe the cause of this is my link cable? It's a Party Link cable (3m)......

      if you are using Steam - check the steam vr settings - it may have the super sampling low?

      @@PaultheSimRacer I discovered this yesterday and changed it, it is better now, but not yet as I wanted it to be. The SteamVR "desktop" is still terrible for some reason, but games are.. fine. The SteamVR games are still a bit blurry, when I compare to games running directly from the Oculus Quest 2, and this is a bit disappointing. Even adjusting the resolution, I feel that its not geting better after some point, just geting heavier to process. I really dont understand why my SteamVR version of Beat Saber looks worse than the Oculus version, its definitely more blurry, but I'm not seeing the compression problems as before. But at least I can now play SteamVR games 75% decently, instead of 40%...

      You attach a battery to the back strap. The battery makes the headset better balanced and more comfortable and you can easily get over 15 hours of nonstop usage on a 1300mah battery. I use this "Anker PowerCore 13000 Portable Charger - Compact 13000mAh 2-Port" attached to the DAS strap I put on my quest 2. I also have the same DAS strap on my quest one with an added battery pack. This setup makes the comfort great and I have never run out of battery. Actually, I can play an entire week without charging.

      In regards to using with the link cable, I was testing settings out on PC2 so had the headset off and on while referring back to the PC, the headset started at 87% and after an hour was on 88%, so I guess it is charging while not displaying anything and only slowly discharging while in use, it is receiving power but not enough to fully power the device while in use. I'd love to see a real test on how long it took to drain a fully charged device which is plugged in, I suspect it'd be well over 3 hours of continuous use, surely you couldn't do that long without breaks (where the headset would start charging).
      Would love to know for sure. Also note I'm not using the official link cable, just a £17 amazon one
