  • In this sim racing video, I am going to show you how to set the correct field of view (FOV) for your racing set up. I am also showcasing my own FOV calculator, which you can find on my website here: sampsoid.com/f...
    I talk through how to correctly calculate and set up your field of view, based on the number of monitors you have, the distance you sit from the monitor, the widths of the bezels around your monitors and how tall you are. We work through how to remedy warping issues on side monitors on a triple screen set up and how to set the horizon line in iRacing correctly for your seating position.

    I was having issues with the FOV on certain tracks and had my triples @ 60 and it really seemed like i was watching people videos that were faster than me driving slower.I felt like it was impossible to make certain corner transitions with the FOV I had. Many thanks I change my monitor angles down to 52 and a correct FOV what a difference then ran out on the track and adjusted the driving height. I have been fighting this forever. If you want to be more precise make the cardboard cutout the length of the top monitors and cut your angle as sometime you have to be creative. Useful info thanks, I finally set my monitor angles correctly and there is a huge difference in the correctness of the projection to side monitors. It told me at 21.5 inch distance to set my angles to 58. Not sure why I had to watch this 2 or 3 times for it to sink in to my thick head that the sim tells you what angle to set the monitors at. I kept trying to tell iracing what angle I had, that's why it looked like my passenger side mirror was as close as the center console lol.

      @Jim Abbott aware this is an old comment but in iracing you can hit compute once you put the information in and it will auto set your fov BUT I think its terrible. The fov I get when doing it my self is much better using fov calculator and adding what that tells me that hitting compute in iracing and letting the game do it. I put the info in like screen size and eye distance and angles but I never hit compute I just put the FOV number in the calculator gave me and leave the compute alone and works great.

    Amazing tutorials, David! Thanks for taking the time to make these. You have a great way of explaining things in an understandable way so please, keep it up!
    It would be great if we were able to select metric instead of imperial measurements in the FOV calculator, for us living in countries without imperial units (can of course use inches for this but still, would be a nice addition to an otherwise great tool).
    I hope you can help with some questions as well:
    Do you have any thoughts on hiding half of the bezels by placing the two side monitors tucked in behind the center monitor? Should the screen width value maybe then be measured only including one bezel? Or should it be avoided by just mounting the monitors next to each other?
    Also, regarding curved monitors (1800R in my case for my upcoming 3x32" setup). Do you think there's anything to take into consideration when taking measurements etc? Screen width, should it be measured straight across "in the air" or following the curve? Maybe it isn't enough to actually make a difference or to even think about... :)

    Thanks for this - great job. Watching this, and as a result understanding how important it is to get it right, prompted me to reconfigure my rig which involved un-mounting a quad monitor stand that was bolted to the rear of a desk and re-mounting it towards the front, and removing a caster wheel from the bottom of the desk to allow my GTR GTA cockpit to slide further underneath. I went from 45" away from the screen to 28" away - and from an FOV of 81 to 121! It also stopped me from blowing my money on the GTA triple-monitor add-on, which would not have gotten me much closer and also has non-adjustable angles for the screens. WTF? Thanks again!

  • @Simlife101
    @Simlife101 Год назад

    The only issue have with many sims including Iracing is when using 32in screens or larger the distance from your eyes if behind the base is around 74cm but if I input 74cm into iracing multi screen set up the corners fuse together the meter boards don't look the right distance so effects so many things negatively. I find anything above 54cm just isn't 1:1. This is why many stick with 27in screens so they can have them in front of base so much closer to their eyes.
    Race beyond matter did a video on it and it was so good to year someone else with the same issue because no one ever believed me when I mentioned it online.
    Even though I'm 74cm eye distance from centre screen I set iracing too 54cm (540mm) and since doing this my times either got quicker or way way more consistent. One thing you need to make sure is all 3 screens are the same distance from your eyes so when you turn your head to look at the side screens your eyes need to be the same distance from the side screens as the centre. Best way I found to do this was cutting a piece of card to the exact length that match my eye distance to the centre screen then I turn my head about 45 degrees to look at the 2 side screens one at a time and put the piece of card on the bridge of my nose and make sure all 3 screens are that distance. Once you have them all matching this way the sense of speed jumps up considerably and your Lao times will either become faster or consistent or both.

      Hi Dave, your question made me think for a second for sure but it's an obtuse angle which is measured from the 180 flat. Great tutorial for triples. The problem with all these calculators is if you only have a single monitor it's impossible to drive. You can never pick up an apex on tight turns until it's too late. Everything becomes a blind corner.

    • @Simlife101
      @Simlife101 Год назад

      @Rob Gibson sorry replying to an old comment but the issue there is the fov calculator is giving you the correct fov you would see of you took a picture frame with no picture in it just the frame which was the same size as your monitor sat in the car and put it at the same distance as you have your monitor in real life and you will see the same amount you see in the sim when setting it up how the calculator tells you.
      So its not really the calculators fault that's just maths. If you don't want it to be 1:1 then that's more a me thing. Hope that makes sense and doesn't come across im being a di*k, always hard to show expression in a comment because your reading it aloud in your head so can be miss interpretation
      Take care.

    Is there anything extra to take into account when setting up curved screens? I have 3x 32in 1000r curved monitors showing up soon and despite being 32in the width (due to how deep the curve is) is 28in.

    FOV in the leading headsets (PSVR, Vive and Rift) is a fair bit lower than a typical triple monitor configuration. Ease of moving your head makes up for much of that though. Pimax has extremely high FOV but does look like a bit of a beast to have strapped to your head.

    I've got 2 questions that i wanna be totally sure about..

    2: Do single monitor users, need to adjust the drivers eye or anything else?

    Does a 21:9 screen throw the FOV math out of the window? As I used the calculator and set my FOV. But my (in game) wheel and hands were massive. And to my eye the FOV was too low. I had to increase the FOV significantly to make it look more correct.

      Good question because I have the same. I’ve seen video on FOV, but not including POV. I’m going try tonight to properly set FOV, but move the camera to the rear about where you would sit in real life. Should keep the perspective the same, but farther back allowing me to see more? Not sure

    @Sampsoid The Vanish-Y and P adjustment is a per-car setting right? You need to adjust it per car and save it? Where the Shift Horizon setting (F9 via Blackbox) is a general setting that applies to every car?

  • @Simlife101
    @Simlife101 Год назад

    Another thing you should mention even if not on topic as such is many people think they need to upgrade from 27in to 32in and while 32in will give them slightly higher vertical FOV the most important is the horizontal and when putting a 32in screen at the distance for comfort which is behind the base you get almost identical FOV as you would with triple 27in in front of the motor.
    I was one of those people lol. I went upto triple 32in from triple 27in thinking I'll see more but ended up seeing almost the same but now I can see all my dash and a sun visor 🤣 i laugh because I have a $£400 dash in front of it so don't look at the in game dash anyway so my £1280 triple 32in screens were a waste of money if they wasn't higher hz as the 27in were Samsung G5 1440p 144hz but had terrible smearing and overshot and ghosting now I have triple Asus Xg32VC 1440p 170hz but much better panel but my point is you don't need 32in screens if you can get 27in screen in front of the wheel base imo. Sorry to go off topic its more for people future information
    Appreciate the video mate thank you even years are its been published

    David, first thanks for the videos, all great. Background, im an old guy (60 plus years old) have used Mac for years because setting up IBM machines...well you know. Anyway, was given a racing rig as a gift, so here we go with IBM again. Love IRacing but struggling with getting it right. Your videos are a godsend for this. On question. when setting up tripples, you set -1920 to center the view with center screen. In a car, depending on what country you are in, you sit on one side or the other. would it be better to offset center screen to reflect that? I always struggle with getting both side view mirrors in view, still working on that since I just upgraded to a 3080 card. Your thoughts? Thanks again....Mark

    • @Simlife101
      @Simlife101 Год назад

      @Mark Kissel what distance are you from centre screen to your eyes and what size screens? This is very important. If you have anything below 27in you won't see both side Mirrors and if the 27in screens are further away tha in front of your wheel base again you won't see them both. If above 32in ill explain but have no idea what sizes you have.
      Also what do you mean you set it too -1920 to centre the view? My rig is on my channel its the only video I have so not a RUclipsr but you'll see i have mine perfect.

    Hi David, great video and thank you.
    Read through all the comments and nobody has asked this. So thinking I am misunderstanding something.
    For Bezel Width (one side of screen) you have entered 0.75 inch. Which seems ridiculous large amount.
    My current single monitor is 1mm.
    Would try your calculation using 1mm, but can't at the moment cause waiting for my new PC arrive that can run triples.
    My triple monitors arrived today.
    Would the correct figure I will be entering is 1 milli-metre concerted to inches is 0.0393 ?
    Thanks in advance
    Scott

    Awesome vid and great timing as I just switched to triples. One question on your calculation of "Bezel Width (one side of the screen)" Does this also include the black on screen bezel that doesn't show any picture or just the plastic bezel outside of the screen? I would think it includes the black screen portion of the bezel, but may want to clarify.
    Thanks again!
