    Just wanna say I appreciate the fact these reviews are done in one take. Other channels keep chopping from take to take and can end up quite jarring to watch.
    These reviews are natural, no silly background music, just a decent bloke giving an honest review

    You're pretty much the only reviewer I've seen be so harsh with their criticism of the Quest 2's PCVR experience so I've valued your word a lot since I'm very sensitive to latency and resolution. I've already got an Index for my setup but it's nice to be informed about the competition.

    I have been playing iRacing on Quest 2 using link. Used debug to up bandwidth to 500 and set settings on Oculus software to 90hz and rendering resoultion to 1.4 and getting a solid 89 fps (+1 and -2 fluctuation max). i5 9600k RTX 2060 Super, G920 Wheel and pedals with PlaySeat Challenge. PLEASE READ!! V24 for link has just updated so I'll do some more testing with this too and weirdly it's still not defaulting to the native resolution of the Q2 for some reason?!
    Also Virtual Desktop has just been updated to 1.18.0 and there a HUGE difference! Lag is basically gone if you have a good system and there's a bump in quality too!! Video to follow!! :)

      Never used VD, can't see how it will be better than a link cable. Glad we agree about how good the Q2 is for SIM racing though. I've really struggled on Assetto Corsa with it though, works perfectly on iracing and other games, i take it Assetto has worked ok for you?

      I have a mid range pc, Ryzen 3600, 16gig Ram, 8gig Radeon 580 and a fast M2 drive. I have been playing Half Life Alyx using Virtual desktop wireless and it's been really good with virtually no lag that I can see. Yet when I plug the link cable in it says 2.8gig connection but the quality goes down whilst playing the same game and it's laggy. Any ideas? PS, Dirt rally 2.0 also looks crap with either cable or wireless. I'm thinking I need a new graphics card? 🙈

    • @chriss.3335
      @chriss.3335 4 года назад +2

      @@CharlySayz I made the same experience. Using VD since Quest 1 and was always very happy. When Link was in beta, VD was giving better results. And now with Link not in beta, even when I pull the settings in Oculus Developer Debug, VD looks still better to me. Although the menus of games, I can see that with Link it is sharper. But in game VD is still looking better.

    I can agree with Karl on this 100%, i was sceptical at first when i recieved my quest 2. Link was not out of beta yet and it did not perform in Sim racing the way we need it to. But after the update i knew within a minute that it was everything they promised performance wise. I can really recommend this as a pcvr headset, at least thats the only thing i intend to use it for. Thanks for the nice videos Karl, it really helped me choosing between rift S(which i bought initially and returned it because 80hz and the screen door made me feel sick) and quest 2, im sooo glad i traded it in.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  2 года назад +1

      If you can afford a Varjo then no question that would be the best VR experience right now, Vale Index is now very old with low resolution and overall poor image quality (by todays standards) I would not recommend that, the Quest 2 is an all in one and compromises in both comfort and LCD panel quality.

    They keep updating their software. And with third party support accessories you can end up with a really comfortable strap, massive playing time with battery, good headphones, fully protecting the headset and controllers and getting wireless for half the price of a valve index , and a quarter of that of a new Pimax
    I have also 256 gb storage for standalone on my quest 2. I have zero lag with virtual desktop, with a 5 ghz connection.😁
    Let quests " competition" lol do all the above and at a similar cost to the $1000 or better Nz I spent purchasing including tricking out my quest in every aspect.😆

    Great to hear you are enjoying it, I have been loving the link update as well, even if I did get it over a week after others haha.
    The refresh update has helped with motion sickness for me along with the increased visuals allow me to tell if the dot in front of me is friendly or not in combat flight sims. With performance like this I can see why they started to treat the rift s like the redheaded stepchild. I have noticed according to steam vr I get the better latency performance when plugged into the gpu type-c compared to the other ports 4-6 ms vs 11ish, my laptop also has similar latency to the other ports as well.
    The new performance hit is certainly noticeable though haha, guess its good the new generation gpu's are having a big leap in performance and I may need to look into getting one.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  4 года назад +1

      I'm also using my GPU's USB C port, it makes sense as the GPU is doing the encoding.
      But yeah this high res really does need some power to run at high settings.

      What PC spec are you running? Im thinking of Q2 link for IL2 BOS combat flight sim but am limited to i7-8700, RTX2070 and 16GB RAM. Worried about latency and performance (and sickness), compared with Rift S instead maybe? Any help appreciated

    • @lostnwalmart9110
      @lostnwalmart9110 3 года назад +1

      @@biffa2557 I have a 9900k and 2080ti, I have not tried Il2 yet since my flight stuff is not available due to us moving I have mostly tested in warthunder. I don't think you will have issue with latency but performance wise you may need to drop some graphics settings down due to rendering the higher resolution. The quest 2 has a higher resolution and refresh rate then the Rift S, so IMO it is now better than a Rift S on paper, but I don't have one to compare it to only a Rift CV1.
      As far as motion sickness goes, all I can say is take it slow and don't force yourself. Some people are fine right away others like myself are not haha. Flying in vr is awesome fighting while flying in vr is even more fun but Idk if it is competitive yet against head tracking.
      Also don't forget about all the other vr experience's that are not sim related, those alone make it a great purchase imo. Hope this was helpful, I have been enjoying mine for wireless vr, sim racing, sim flying, and space combat.

    Pleased to hear you mention that the latency seems to be improved - that was putting me off but now I’m seriously tempted by the Quest 2. How is the lag compared to other wired headsets? Obviously for sim racing reaction time is critical. How do your lap times compare with link cable vs VD or against a native wired headset such as Rift S? I could cope with a slight drop in quality on a native wired headset but any latency or lag would trouble me. Any opinions or experience with this? Thanks

    i currently have a rift s and 5600x + 6700xt 32gb 3200mhz ram. Will I be fine going to a quest 2 for dirt rally 2.0? I played on a modified high settings and kept a solid 80fps(i believe that was the cap on the rift)?
    Looking at the games releases, the standalone library kinda sucks outside of Resident Evil 4 ,Walking Dead and Super Hot (both of which I already played on PCVR).
    i mainly want to break free of the cable and get resident evil 4 and a few sideloaded games.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  2 года назад

      Going cable free is the biggest change I've experienced in VR, nothing better!
      You will be ok on medium/high settings and render resolution but from what I understand the AMD video compression (this is what is used to stream the rendered visuals to the Q2) isn't the best, the Nvidia encoder is apparently much better.

    As someone that uses his VR 95% of the time for only sim racing, the Quest 2 PCVR is not an overall step up visually from the Rift S for my rig - i5 8600K at 4.8GHz and 1080Ti. It's consistently less sharp and to get even close to looking as sharp as the RIft S (it never quite gets there) I'm losing 30-40% overhead and FPS becomes a major issue.
    I've tested my link speed (get 2.5GBps), put the bitrate up manually and it's still not there. I've tried AMS2, Dirt Rally 2, rFactor 2 and ACC - all are the same and ACC is basically unplayable now at anything resembling an acceptable image quality. (It was always poor anyway and stuck permanently at 40FPS ASW in the Rift S - the overhead of the Quest 2 compression compensation kills it entirely).
    You're clearly losing a lot of fidelity due to the compressed video over the link cable. The native image in the Quest 2 is pin sharp. It's immediately noticeable what you lose when you go PCVR mode. Even when I pushed the Quest 2 resolution to maximum in the Oculus software the improvements in image quality were minimal in the headset (and frame rate obviously tanked). Past a certain point on the Quest 2 resolution slider you stop seeing image quality improvements in the headset - that indicates a bottleneck being hit). If I go from say 1.5 to 2.0 SS with the Rift S the image quality leaps up in sharpness (and the frame rate tanks). The link cable approach is gimping the headset from what I can tell?
    Apparently the 2000 series and above Nvidia cards use a better video compression encoder which may give different results but on my 1080Ti and well configured rig, the Quest 2 is not as good visually as the Rift S on the PC for sim racing. To note - with Half Life Alyx the 2 were largely the same visually. With Oculus home virtual desktop (not the wireless virtual desktop app) the Quest 2 text sharpness on say a web browser or discord, was sharper. This comment is focussed on running racing sims.
    I love the Quest 2 - it's amazing value and stunning what they have managed to achieve as a "VR console on your head" in such a light package. But better than the Rift S visually in sim racing for the same computing power output - it's a noticeable step backwards.
    This wasn't a rash decision. Spent 10hrs trying to make it my new universal headset. The Rift S is back connected to the PC now. I'd more than welcome a nugget of knowledge that tells me I'm wrong or how to improve the Quest 2 PCVR for sim racing, apart from buying a new GPU :)

      @@KarlGosling Thanks for the reply Karl.
      I was reading up on video compression codecs and came upon an article talking about advances in them, specifically something called AV1 video compression. Some further digging still indicated it was only on newer 2000 and above NVidia GPU's however I also found contradictory information that it's since been added for older GPU's too - ie my 1080Ti's and others (info direct from Nvidia development site).
      The one piece of the puzzle unique to all articles was the requirement for Windows 10 Version 1909. Guess who doesn't update windows often (about once a year) and is still on Version 1709. Meeee!
      I'm stubbornly resistant to Windows updates unless they are required lol. 😁
      Will let you know the results.

    • @jrsp6480
      @jrsp6480 3 года назад

      Unfortunately the Windows update didn't help to get my sims looking better at all or without a massive performance hit. Seems the Rift S is just the optimal headset for my rig. I think if you have a lot more power you might fare a bit better and I probably need to spend more time configuring a specific game for the specific headset (I setup the CV1 and Rift S very differently to get the best image possible with each) but after 14hrs total now testing I throw in the towel.
      One new thing in the Quest 2 I noticed tonight was always worse was peripheral motion; it was juddery where the Rift S was smooth. Particularly noticeable on AMS2 at Bathurst with all the lettering on the billoards. both vertical and horizontal motion of the letters seemed to judder badly and lost the fluidity the Rift S has (this was with otherwise identical overhead readings on the Debug tool so it wasn't me running out of juice). This happened at both 80 and 40FPS with ASW active.
      What I will be using it for on the PC is watching films. Maxing out the resolution slider they look great as does simply using the desktop which has sharp lettering on any window.
      I'd still be interested to see if at the same settings you see any difference from the 1080Ti to the 2080 Karl, see if there is something to this reported new compression codec with the 2000 and newer NVidia cards?
      Otherwise Quest 2 for fantastic wireless gaming action and maybe re-visit sim racing once I get my next major CPU/GPU upgrades. Ryzen 5600X and RTX3080 targetted down the line :)

    Would you recommend the Quest 2 as an upgrade to the Rift S for sim racing? I only use VR for sim racing so I'd be running it wired 100% of the time, and all I'm hoping for is an increase in sharpness and overall visual quality.

      I know this is old, but if you're looking for a more accurate IPD setting than 68mm/setting 3, try either ↓
      #1 Putting in the glasses spacer (although this will reduce the FOV a bit, though that might be a positive if seeing the display edges happens to bug you).
      Or
      #2. Putting something like a piece of styrofoam in-between the lenses to put constant gentle outwards pressure on them. This will "unlock" a "hidden" ≈70mm IPD setting (yes, the rendered "display positions" actually adjust to match this "extra setting" [this is also the case for any "in-between settings" in the middle of the hard locked positions. In fact the software seems to update on a mm by mm basis, just like on Quest 1]).
      And if you combine both #1 AND #2 you can push the Quest 2 up to a practical IPD setting of nearly ≈72mm, which is a pretty significant step up from the 68mm "normal" maximum!

    What’s the spec of your pc please? I’m curious as to how much sacrifice I’ll need to make in visual over a monitor. I’m running a 2080ti , 10900 on a 1440 currently.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  3 года назад

      2080 3800X 32GB RAM.
      Thing is mate you gain so much in immersion, actually being in the car gives you a much better feel for everything... well worth a little sacrifice in sharpness I think.

    Karl , are you using MSAA with Assetto? I'm not having that pin sharp effect , having 2070s , should be similar to your 2080. Mind sharing settings?

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  3 года назад

      No it's off, settings are all on medium/low I think mate, if it's not pin sharp it probably because your rendering resolution is low in the Oculus software.

      @bbbmarko1 3 года назад

      @@KarlGosling answered on your other video, it's 1.7x in oculus and 1.3ss in oculus tray tool. Maybe i just have unreal expectations and a slightly "slower" gpu. Btw clouds in assetto are fps killers

    • @bbbmarko1
      @bbbmarko1 3 года назад

      @@KarlGosling nah it's 1.7x in oculus , and depending of the game i adjust in OTT. Maybe i had higher expectations regarding the visual. Near is awesome , little bit in the distance you can see jaggies appear, without MSAA it's sharp but with jagged edges, and MSAA drops performance and blurs entire thing but no jaggies. So i gues that's that.

      If you don't mind LCD blacks (grey), poor audio and inside out tracking then yes definitely! The visual clarity and the ability to have a good wireless play experience is amazing! :)

      @@KarlGosling For audio I'm using my own headphones so it's not really an issue. My main problem with the CV1 is that even though I play with multisampling on 1.4 - 1.5 a lot of times I can't see upcoming turns even if I know they are there.

    Hey Karl, I have a gtx1080, without upgrading do you believe I will have a better all around sim racing experience with Quest2 or Rift S ? My guess is Rift S because of the lower resolution, and because the link conversion is a bit taxing on the gpu.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  4 года назад

      Hmm I think it's a very difficult one to call, you certainly won't be able to run the Q2 at it's native resolution so a tricky one to decide upon... I think you'd need to try both and decide for yourself.

    Hi just seen your updated comment below so all good, as I was going to comment to your video. I’ve just got my quest 2 and I’m using it wirelessly on virtual desktop and see no latency and amazing quality! So the update must be the key.

    Hey Karl,
    Did you run into any audio issues with your Quest 2 on Link? I can't figure out why I am getting really stuttery audio. Whether it's an Oculus game or SteamVR game, I'm getting really bad audio stuttering. The video signal appears to be fine, but the audio is cutting in and out constantly.
    Thanks

      The only time I have experienced this was when I was using a USB 2 port or a poor quality link cable.

    If you don't mind me asking, how fast are you as a driver? I'm thinking about getting a Quest 2, but I'm worried that the latency might be an issue for the faster drivers, while it might not be for someone who is not as fast.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  4 года назад

      Not that fast mate! Lol But I'm not feeling any latency and I'm very sensitive to that.
