@@TleafarafaelT well I have tried the Oculus quest. The data transfer is quite taxing to the system and you can notice significant degradation of quality through the headset. However with some tweaking around it becomes much better and even raced in a short race in the Ferrari GT3 taking second position. The immersion is absolutely fantastic when you finally fix the stutters (there is some tweaking to be done). I noticed that with the VR headset on I make much fewer mistakes and learn the track faster and even able to drive cars that before it was impossible on the screen. However on tracks I am already familiar with I am a bit slower but that has to do with fear of hitting the walls because in VR you are much more aware of the danger so I am not pushing at 100% and also noticed that my lines changed significantly becoming smoother and more streamlined, while before I was squaring some turns now I drive more naturally. As for driving on my previous limits i guess it's a matter of getting used to it. The straps that come with the Oculus Quest are trash, I strongly recommend going aftermarket. Also I noticed some discomfort in longer sessions from sweat and heat and I have to find a way to tackle this issue as I am living in an extremely hot country (summer temps soared to over 46C) All in all a huge step up of awareness and immersion from the single screen but graphics quality and FPS do take a hit. My CSL DD has not arrived yet.
@@ja1pa In iracing i followed some guides i found in youtube and matched them to the abilities of my computer as to leave some overhead in CPU, memory and GPU. For the oculus itself i run it at 80Hz 3616x1840 and rendering resolution 1.1 - 1.2X. Also facing issues with stuttering, shimmering, artifacts and general blurriness I went into a race after about an hour of practice and generic setup, I got pole position but during the race it was a nightmare, within 20 minutes I was completely drained out due to those issues and lost my concentration and switched from battle mode to simply finishing the race in whatever position I could get. My first job is to buy a proper wire to connect the oculus. I bought an off the shelf USB 3 cable. I recently ordered a cable from VR cover, they ran out of the 5m so I ordered the 2m cable. These cables should be able to handle high throughput and they have gold-plated connections. I think this will help otherwise I will need to upgrade my PC and at this time with all the shortages etc it is not only a very expensive endeavor but tricky as well. I was looking at new CPU/motherboards that should do the trick but it turns out that DDR-5 ram is out of stock across the board, thus the only option is to go for DDR-4 compatible motherboards. Without changing GPU (1070GTX) and only changing motherboard/ CPU and memory I am still looking at an 800EUR + upgrade which is quite steep. New GPU is out of the question as their prices are exorbitant.... if you can find any
Just got my Quest2... I never knew what I was missing. Glad we race different class cuz damn... doing all the narration and driving like that... good job ;)
i understand the idea that the G2 is a better overall package for sim racers, but given that it's almost twice as expensive, the advantages given i don't feel warrant the price. id rather (and planning on) getting the quest 2 and a new GPU. maybe if i already had a high end GPU and had enough money to spare i would get the g2 but there are so many things to buy to setup a sim racing rig i feel like quest 2 is good enough to have a good entry level VR sim rig

I was a day one adopter to the Quest 2, as I have pretty much owned every HMD. There was talk that the LCD can do 120Hz - So that may come in an update. Mine happily runs at 90Hz 1.2x (3920*1984) Encode bitrate 500Mbps (In ODT) with a 3070. The clarity is on par with the G1, though more washed out. Also have the Reverb G2, which since the X570 USB bios fix, seems to fix the disconnects. Also there are performance tweaks to be made, by disabling the virtual monitors. Which brings it back to being easier to run as G1 was. Which is why I always felt WMR gave more performance in these higher res HMD's. Also if you enable motion reprojection in Steam/steamapps/common/MixedRealityVRDrivers/resources/settings And change "motionReprojectionMode" from "none" to "auto" you will have just as good an experience as you get in Oculus. Just bare in mind, with every update, you need to keep changing this setting, as it defaults back to "none"
@@zachmcgroin4769 As I ran a G1 with a 2080 Ti, it is no different with a 3070 and G2 at native res as long as you do the reg edit tweak to stop the extra virtual monitors. Here's a video when I ran the G1 with a 2080 Ti in ACC at 90fps ruclips.net/video/X_kXzDVHIIE/видео.html
Been experimenting with the Q2 via link for the last week. Trying different settings to get the best visuals/experience. So far I’ve been really happy with; -90hz -Resolution Slider at 1.3x = 4128x2096 -Bit Trnsf Rate at 500mbps via ODT I’m using an Insignia 5gbps usb-c cable that I have plugged directly into my MSI Carbon Z390 MB and it keeps the headset charged while racing. I also like how I can see my monitors display via virtual desktop when setting up a session and opening up different apps.
I want to buy a VR, for the immersion and to improve my vison for the racing line. Graphics really don't bother me, I wouldn't even car if it had GT Legends graphics, its just I just don't want any annoying graphical problems, is this too expensive, am I going too far?
Just came over to iRacing from ACC and was looking into trying VR as I ended up buying a quest 2 for my kids last Christmas. Thanks so much for the in depth and informative review. Subbed!
Which is better in your view man hp pro or this one you used in this vid. But I would only use the wired way if I went the quest. Also my races can go up to 2.5 hrs as the series is v8 veterans league we do enduro races to.
Awesome amount of info here! My question to you sir is, if I run a decent gaming pc with a rtx 2080 and if I’m getting into sim racing , would you choose a good single 144hz+ monitor over a headset or since my daughter has one of these oculus quest 2 on the shelf… is this is a much better experience for racing. Didn’t know how relevant refresh rate and resolution is since I’m so new.
If you already have a VR headset in the house I would say try it! But I don't use it for long races. For my an hour race max. I go back and forth and some swear by one or the other. I would personally go for the monitor for a base and borrow the headset when you want total immersion.
When the headset works is fine, but every time I have to run mine I have to waste about 15 minutes troubleshooting random stuff that hinders from everything working fine. For some reason, EVERY TIME I try to play, I have to reset my computers for the quest link to work, known as Rift Link. If I have to reset the headset, then I also have to reset my computer AGAIN for it to work. Not every time works like that and it's such a waste of time. I am using my headset with the wire link, I bought best buy's brand for the vr cable as it was $30 cheaper and the bandwidth is the same as the quest cable. All in all, if you want to have a smooth and working headset I will suggest to go a different route. What I like about it is that the definition seems to be fine (don't expect anything 4K, it just barely gets to HD on a good day. It is a little grainy but that's an issue from all headsets. I play Automobilista 2 and I love how smooth it works on VR, compared to Dirt, Assetto corsa and iRacing. I initially had the 120hz feature on and I had some stuttering going on, almost as if it was running at 50hz which is very choppy. I turned off that feature and went back to 72hz and it made a world of difference in quality, looks more like 90hz but now most headsets come with 120hz availability but not sure how true that is. For $299 I think it's a great introductory headset, but the hassle and nightmare it is to have it working in less than 10 minutes is almost not worth the low price, I suggest going into something between $599 like the HP, or if you can afford without much budgeting I would say the HTC vive pro 2 bundle should be something very strong for a long time to come.
New to your channel. I am thinking of buying it. Is it plug n play with steam games like DR2, AC, ? Will it work with 12500 i5 and Rtx 3080 via air link ? Thank u.
In order to get it to work with steam games you need to download steam as well as steam VR the Oculus software you going to first enter airlink or Oculus link with the cable to your PCVR and then you would start steam VR which would enable you to then run any steam VR game. It's that simple just running two pieces of software.

What i am saying is Dirt Rally 2.0 VR will keep different graphics settings compare to Dirt Rally 2.0 normal Monitor .exe ? Thank u again.
For PCVR i would not buy a Quest 2 again, a good wired set like a reverb or index is easier to setup and lag free unlike the problems with the Q2 (link cable or wireless) iv had and still have. If id still have my old windows mixed reality set id still use that for racing instead of the Q2 just for reliability and compatibility, it was plug and play and always worked. The Q2 is an amazing this as a standalone gaming experience but i wouldnt buy it again for pcvr. your results may very but im having a hard time with it.
VR by far...i've tried everything...ultra wide, triple screens, projector...NOTHING is like VR...because it's actually 3D you can judge your speeds and distances much more easily and having the cockpit all around you (or you being INSIDE the sim however you want to say it) allow you to feel what the car is actually doing around you which also help with your sense of awareness of what's going on..it's hard to explain, but i was never able to really fast and CONSISTENT on anything that was 2D...judging distances and speed is too hard on a flat screen... I also use a Butkicker on my gaming chair, paired with simhub i can feel the car engine RPM and transmission shifting gears and stuff...it's awesome with VR.
Question: the cable linking it to the PC does it charge the battery as well? like can i play all night on this if simracing? Thanks... Also...upgrade from Rift S to this...strictly for PC gaming...FPS (onward, pavlov) but MOSTLY sim racing...? good or bad move?
Personally for room scale and if u have a good router then do it if you're committed to going wireless. For sim racing going wireless then plugging the USB into a charger that can output a good amount of power then you'll be fine. I find using a Link cable you do get a charge to the headset but being that it's also sending data through the line I still end up draining the battery after a few races on iRacing so you do get over an hour but I wouldn't say all night. The fov is a little bit smaller than the rift s I wouldn't necessarily consider it if you're always going to be using a Link cable even for your room scale VR.

They are connected to the PC and the headset is connected to the PC via the Oculus app in order to play these games that I'm playing in this video you need to have a PC capable of playing PC VR
How powerful would your PC have to be to run this? Like do you need a real beast of a PC or would it be enough if it's able to run the games, if you turn down the settings for example?
Depends on the game to be honest. IRacing and Assetto cora are the easiest and the equivalent of a 3060 and above should work but may need settings adjusted. ACC on the other hand. I sometimes have issues even with my 3090 and 5900x
How did you get the Quest 2 to keep its charge while using the Link Cable? The con I have with the headset is that you can't race with it in an endurance race. The battery only lasts for a couple hours.

Regarding FOV: in a title such as rfactor 2 where you can adjust FOV on the fly, would that render the FOV issue moot? Or is there something I don’t know - I’ve never owned a VR headset as I wanted to wait a while for the quality to improve.
So if you try to think of it this way the fov of the headset is the horizontal / vertical view that you can actually see. Kind of like if you're wearing a racing helmet ... It is how much you could actually see through the visor. A narrow fov means you'll see less side to side. Hopefully that makes sense.
@@RTAMOTORSPORTS it totally makes sense - actually i recently got a quest 2 and have not needed nor even wanted to adjust fov whilst in vr... your statement comparing the vr experience to wearing a helmet is quite apt i must say. i also gotta say that assetto corsa is amazing in vr, as is rfactor2 - only thing is i'm a bit hindered eye candy wise by my gtx 1070 - i7 6700(non K) - 16gb ram pc, although AC runs for the most part at 72fps with occasional drops to 36 especially if there are many cars in the race. I wonder If i will be able to run this in Quest 2 at 90Hz... Probably not... I also would like to know how it would be to use the Quest 2 in Dirt Rally 2.0... Did you need to buy any virtual desktop app? You used the usb C link cable or with Wifi? My router is a Asus AC-2900 and is about 8 meters away from computer and the simrig with no obstacles. I wonder if the Wifi will work fine. So many questions and so many doubts....
@@nunoferraz it's kind of hard to say cuz I don't have that exact hardware what exactly it would do but the quest to could run at 72 90 and 120 and it also has reprojection that is very good personally I run through my Wi-Fi router using virtual desktop I feel like it looks better using that software. The Oculus software if you're running at a higher refresh rate requires some tweaking to make it look good. You just may have to lower your in-game graphical settings from your sol mod.
Great review. The Facebook requirement is a non-starter for me though. Facebook has ruined the best VR, just as most people thought it would the day Oculus was acquired.
@@RTAMOTORSPORTS Hmm idk. I got the Quest 2 since asking and I've owned a G2 in the past. With the stock setup it's pretty bad for me, but it can definitely be improved.

@@janke7169 Thank you for the suggestion, I would still have to pay duty taxes on top of the original price which are the reason it is so expensive here. It might work out better though.
A VR headset that limits your peripheral vision is fine for non-racing games, but for me the restriction of peripheral vision really kills the sense of speed which is essential for racing sims. I'll wait for a VR headset that has a full 180 degree horizontal FOV.
For car guys it probably would had been better to talk about your experience of driving the actually car in game and commenting on the actual race than talking about the head set.
What would you like to know? As far as VR experience when driving as I used many headsets on this channel, the feeling of presence and immersion is awesome, just lacking in fov. And I highly recommend virtual desktop for wireless VR as it looks so much clearer to see brake markers than the Oculus software Beta.
But since I used and reviewed most VR headsets and used them since before Oculus cv1 came out, me explaining presence of being in the car seems redundant lol but I do see your point.

As for driving on my previous limits i guess it's a matter of getting used to it. The straps that come with the Oculus Quest are trash, I strongly recommend going aftermarket. Also I noticed some discomfort in longer sessions from sweat and heat and I have to find a way to tackle this issue as I am living in an extremely hot country (summer temps soared to over 46C)
All in all a huge step up of awareness and immersion from the single screen but graphics quality and FPS do take a hit.

@@christoforospaphitis4090 What settings are you running on your Quest 2? Recently got mine and stuttering is a problem

Also if you enable motion reprojection in Steam/steamapps/common/MixedRealityVRDrivers/resources/settings
And change "motionReprojectionMode" from "none" to "auto" you will have just as good an experience as you get in Oculus.
Just bare in mind, with every update, you need to keep changing this setting, as it defaults back to "none"

Been experimenting with the Q2 via link for the last week. Trying different settings to get the best visuals/experience. So far I’ve been really happy with;
-90hz
-Resolution Slider at 1.3x = 4128x2096
-Bit Trnsf Rate at 500mbps via ODT
I’m using an Insignia 5gbps usb-c cable that I have plugged directly into my MSI Carbon Z390 MB and it keeps the headset charged while racing. I also like how I can see my monitors display via virtual desktop when setting up a session and opening up different apps.

For the q2 to charge via link you must connect it to a usb type-c port for a full 3a and then the battery does not discharge :)

@@RTAMOTORSPORTS awesome, sounds like a plan! Thanks for the input man🙏🏻
When the headset works is fine, but every time I have to run mine I have to waste about 15 minutes troubleshooting random stuff that hinders from everything working fine.
For $299 I think it's a great introductory headset, but the hassle and nightmare it is to have it working in less than 10 minutes is almost not worth the low price, I suggest going into something between $599 like the HP, or if you can afford without much budgeting I would say the HTC vive pro 2 bundle should be something very strong for a long time to come.
i got CV1 and then I buy this one.... can't accept less wide view somehow.. cant push out optics more.. and flushed colour... other are pros.
I don't think you will have much of an issue running with that setup.
@@RTAMOTORSPORTS That looks really easy i have Steam and Steam VR already installed on my PC , So i have to instal the Oculus software also on PC , and then Quest 2 will work ? Nice....

Hi, very good review. VR headsets and curve projector for sim racing, which one you prefer and why?
