iRacing Guides | Never lock up again! Get more out of your brakes with an easy trick!

- Today we are covering braking and how to make it a bit easier on iRacing since we don't get a lot of calibration options. You never really need 100% brakes so this video will show you how to avoid locking up easily and get more useable range out of your brakes.
This is an option that most high end pedals have in their software (Heusinkveld Sprint for example) - this video shows you how to get the same effect with lower end pedals.
Some pedals seem to be a bit different than what is shown in the video, as a reference:
Logitech is inverted and you need to go in the negative range to achieve the same effect (255 is 100% ... so 318 would be 80% max force and as 255 is the min and 0 is the max you need to go to negative values ... -63 in this case)
For Thrustmaster you need to set the CalibMin to negative values ... start with -250.
Fanatec V3 seems to need around -30000 or so on CalibMin.
Thank you very much to scudly and David Martin for pointing it out :)
If you still have problems it might be worth checking the Hardware section of the iRacing forum!

This feature is now implemented within iRacing ... just head over to the options and on the main page (top left) adjust the Max Range accordingly - no need to play around with the joycalib any more!
Dan, just wanted to thank you for this video. I have much more confidence on the brakes now after following your braking adjustments. Much appreciated!!
I'm very new to iRacing and the one thing I've had major issues with is brake lockup with pretty much every car I've driven so far. Definitely looking forward to trying out this tip with my Fanatec pedals later today. Thanks for the great video explaining this little trick.
Just discovered iRacing and use sprints, this video has just saved iRacings life, nice one.
i have just brought some sprint pedals and followed your instructions on here and i very rarely lock up now... thank you and love your videos, so helpfull
My God you saved my racing! This tip alone is going to improve my lap times, and hopefully help me become a better racer. I cant wait to adjust other cars!!!
Top man Dan, I rest my foot on the brake and it registered a small brake input, to set the deadzone on the pedals to allow me to rest my foot has helped a lot, thanks.
Hey Dan. I just wanna thank you for your arsenal of interesting videos about sim racing! You are one of the reasons why I finally bought my first setup and started racing recently. Best decision ever! Keep up the amazing work and greetings from Berlin
dude this is amazing, i think you have just let us in to a big secret the pro's use. it explains things i've seen in some streams where i attributed some peoples crazy numbers to higher end pedals.
Hey Dan glad to see you on the youtube side of things man!
For the Logitech G29 or G27 pedals it is inverted, so you will have 255 on the CalibMin and 0 on CalibMax. Type -55 instead of 0 and you should be good to go if you are using those pedals.
thank you !
Hola David, quizá puedas echarme una mano.
Como has dejado la configuración en el g29? No me aclaro...
Muchas gracias
Thank YOU @Dan! This improved my breaking ALOT and now i DONT COOK my tyres on GTE nor abuse ABS on GT3! It do though require fine tune per person and diff pedals, and I so LOVE this! Thanks ones again for this! //NajKali
Crazy :-D Already the first lap after the out-lap was already a second faster! A must for everyone who wants to drive competitive!
Interesting, gonna give this a go as I've always struggled with brake locking in GT cars
Hi Mr. Suzuki! Love the content!
Started iracing yesterday. Got my first podium today thanks to this helpful video!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻👍🏼
👊🤡
I love you Dan... massive help for my V3's. Could never get the travel that I wanted out of my break pedal. I tried to adjust everything from pre load to changing the makeup of my performance kit. Now only lock up at the final 10-15% travel of my break. Again I love you...
What settings you using now ?
What settings did you use for the joycalib file with the V3's?
Jeezes Dan, great video, helped a lot. No more spasms in my foot after a few races 😂
Yeah. Thats really helpful. I use it in the 3.5! Just keep in mind that the setup also has an influence on available brake force. Especially in an openwheeler. With a ldf setup around something like momza you will lock up a lot earlier compared to a hdf setup. So you should tune it for you hdf setups so you dont run in to problems there
yeah, with css i found it much easier to not lock up with gtes than with random setups or baseline
Thanks, I can't wait to try it out.
That was so so helpful. Thanks Dan
Amazing tip, thanks Dan!
This is amazing! I spent some time dialing in my bias then dialed this in for a Radical at Spa. I raced Radicals all last season 2 or 3 races a day without a win. I ran my first race today(low split) where I was ranked 16th, I got the pole and stayed in first until the win.
Niceee! 👍
GJ
Does this trick still work??
Thanks Dan, I'll try this tomorrow.
Thank you Dan, that really helped me to get better control on the 911 GT3!
what value did you use?!
Great information!! Thanks Dan
Dan , Great information and presentation Ty mate
Brillian! Thanks, very nice also the configuration from Smart Control. Thanks, ciao!
Super Video, Vielen Dank für die guten Informationen 👍
All the people saying this is cheating lol, I play with a g29 and single screen, so according to all of you people with a better setup like ddw or load cell pedals and triple screen are also cheating, because they have better software or hardware that has all this extra options to tune your setup than a basic g29. Love the content Dan! I am definitely trying this, but maybe only on 90%, I just want to get a higher pedal resolution, and still have to fight against lockups
I done this on the Audi R8 about a year ago and it helped. Iracing has a horrible ABS algorythm and it beats up the front tires. Same goes for their traction control, it is hard on the rear tires. If you can drive the car with the pedal and turn off TC you will run faster laps. I found turning off TC2 on the Ford GT GTE helps exit speed a good bit.
That’s awesome info dude! Thank you
Great vid as always Dan. I have the basic Logitech G923. The values it reads are backward for some reason. You need to change the CalibMin value to a -ve figure (i have mine at -45) to make the same result.
Dan thanks for this, ive been thinking of doing some tutorials on my channel. Then found this. Cheers
I’m one place behind you in VRS as of today 😁. That’s best 7 out of 10 from the forum post.
Ah I see you mean set the CaliMin to -63 cause now it works :)
Thanks man well done ! . After all, I'm not afraid to touch the brake on the g29 set. You have a beer in Warsaw when you will be :-)
The problem is, some corner need 100% like road atlanta (down hill before chicane) M8 wont lock up for a few meters, otherwise you have to brake way earlier and you lose time, great vid man!
just adopt a proper trail braking technique?
This guy seems really really freaking nice. Like he would be my friend for sure.
He’e streams are great fun and he communicates with the people watching. Very nice work

This is just awsome!! i'm on thrustmaster, but i found how to make it work in the comments. Thanks!
hey mate.. I still have doubts, to get 80%, what should I do on joycalib? I have t3pa GT version ... I must change Calibmax (1023) or just calibmin (currently 0)
On my Fanatec CSL Load Cell I run 60% in most cars and it works awesome!
I couldn’t get this to work with vjoy/IrFFB and my T300. But to get it working in the calib file set the calibmin value of the X axis on vjoy to ~ -13000 for 80% max brake pressure. Works like a charm!!
Great content!!
This is an option that most high end pedals have in their software (Heusinkveld Sprint for example has presets with lower brake pressure per car: heusinkveld.com/sim-pedals-sprint-smartcontrol-presets/?q=%2Fsim-pedals-sprint-smartcontrol-presets%2F&v=3a52f3c22ed6) - this video shows you how to get the same effect with lower end pedals.

do the fanatec v3 pedals software have such a feature? I just ordered them and am curious to know how to best set them up
I've tried to follow this guide and it dowsn't work for me, nothing wrong, I've heusinkveld pedals PRO
@@crissssssttttttttttt same for me. Maybe iracing fixed it or changed the behavior..
Fanatec CSL are 0 for max throttle and 65535 for minimum throttle
Can't get V3s to calibrate like this with that file. Anyone have any suggestions?
great work mate very helpful for the likes of myself relatively new to the sim racing world with a g920, (my clubsport 2.5 is still on back order :
This a good guide, however for pedals like the Thrustmaster which aren't setup in a similar fashion you need to change the CalibMin value to not be 0 and instead be a negative value of whatever you want the adjustment to be. For most people adjusting it to about -250(ish) should give you about 70-75% of braking with your foot to the floor.
Yeah, that threw me. Mine goes from 1023 to 0, and my center is also 1023 instead of 0. Do I leave that alone?
@@drafman Yeah you don't want to touch the CalibCenter values for Thrustmaster pedals, just adjust the CalibMin value to be a negative value.
@@scud thx!
Thank you for sharing this. it helped alot.
Would like to see a video for lower end pedals - does iRacing have to be restarted once changes are made?
Thank you very much ! 🤘
Vielen Dank Dan! Sehr guter Tip. In IMSA Sebring bin ich nicht schneller damit, allerdings speziell in der scharfen Rechtskurve blockieren die Reifen weniger schnell resp gar nicht mehr. Das hat mich im Rennen einige Zehntel gekostet. Super!
Ach ja: Fanatec V3.
Was hast du bei "CalibCenter:" eingetragen? Bei mir funtkioniert es leider nicht. (Auch Fanatec V3)
for g29 users with a bodnar cable, which increases the steps and makes it a stand alone device, just make the calibmax about 900-975 seems to work for me
On T300, CalibCenter had to remain at default of 1023 but CalibMax suggestion worked great
Thanks , Dan
Thank's Dan, very useful tips in this video.
Thank you!
I did this in my fanatec peddle setup but never knew you could do this, i would be interested if you ever do any mid race brake bias changes and explaining when and why you would
Does this trick still work in iRacing?
Thanks Dave Suzuki
This is super interesting. I'm brand new to sim racing and I've started with a G920 wheel. The brake pedal is super stiff near max displacement and there are a lot of complaints about it after searching online to see if that was normal. A lot of people remove the a rubber pad in the brake pedal to make it more easy to achieve 100% pedal displacement. I thought that I would be at a disadvantage in certain circumstances (high performance cars maybe) by not being able to use 100% of brake travel with the wheel but after seeing this video it looks like it will actually be a total plus to have such a firm brake pedal near the top of its travel. This video has saved me from opening up the G920 pedal box to make an unnecessary fix! Thank you!
thanks Dan
adjusted my brake pressure in the asetek app, just put up 2 full second faster times than last night. Granted i've only been playing for a week :)
Thank you!!!
Thank u dan really usefull
Hi Dan, i'm do the same via iRacing (push the break pedal only at 80 %--> iRacing allow this)..now i will do via the files ..it's more accurate !!!
Logitech G27-G29 Users set CalibMin: -51 to get the 77% break force. It also appears that the JoyCalib txt file will get re-written everytime you calibrate. So just set it once and leave it. If you have to reset it, you must edit the Joycalib again. I think anyways!
Your production is fucking amazing! Keep it up man
Maybe I´m not the only one so here is a little tip for you guys. I need to change the CalibMin to -X. It took me some time to realize that so I hope I could help you out.
Klasse Tipp.
Vielen Dank, Dan!
For the G27 and the new JoyCalib.yaml use CalibMin: -51 to get the 77% break force
l
Thanks for the vids Dan!! looking for group to race with in the LMP
I already know about this one. Haven't tried it yet because I'm questioning myself: If I use this type of calibration, doesn't this mean I never really learn how to break properly? I'm not sure. What are your thoughts about it?
I'm currently running G920 Wheel + Fanatec Clubsport V2 (Loadcell on 5/10). I'd love to increase the Loadcell to be much stiffer but then on some corners where you gentle use the brake (like 5-10%) to place the car, I really have to hit the break really hard and this doesn't feel really natural. Any thoughts on this?
IF YOU CANT FIND THE JOY CALIB FILE OR IT IS NOT GENERATING FROM FOLLOWING THE STEPS:
There is also a joycalib in documents/iracing/setups/*car name here*. Edit this if the main JoyCalib is not presenting itself. (Must have custom controls for car checked ON in options in iracing)
I'm gonna watch this. I keep locking the rears and spinning out 🤣
you might be joking, so sorry if you are but this sounds more like a lack of rev matching than locking up in braking
I realize this is an old video but still had to say thank you! After a few hours dialing it in this is a game changer for me!
Still work? Wasn’t sure if this was something “patchable” by iRacing.
@@stephaniecloutier7038 I just did it yesterday and it works.
Rig tour when? But yeah, really good video Dan. I mean it is kind of a trick but since it isnt forbidden and helps the drivers feel of the car, who cares :D
The only car I've come close to using 100% on without locking is the Dallara P217. I've been hitting 94-95% braking into the chicane.
FYI Faanatec also has an option to do this.. its the BFR under profiles on your wheel :-)
Isnt that the oposite? 50 BFR gives me already 100% brakeforce at half the brake pressure input.
@@speckracing7165 haha no clue... Maybe thats why I'm only 1700ir hahahaha
A very helpfull video mate! 👍💪
That's the "magic" behind the aliens.
I wouldn't have figured that out on my own.
I was driving the Ferrari GTE in Laguna yesterday in rFactor2.
No matter what I change in the setup, at some point the tires lock up.
I drove a low 1:20.
Fear of locking up the tires doesn't make me go any faster.
Then that night I discovered your video.
I think I'll find a LOT of time with that.
Thanks very much! 👍😀💪
Sometimes catching the car with full throttle and full brakes need a lockup so it might be useful to have a safety window cause of that
just don't crash Kappa
edit: for a serious response tho, you don't need 100% of the pedal to lock up when you're spinning as the grip already isn't there so it'll lock up anyway
U can still Lock Up at the end of the braking zone, If U keep Holding the Break. But at the beginning at the braking zone U cant Lock Up anymore.
I think thats the Point.
Anyway thank U dan! 😉
Hey Dan, long time follower, love the videos. I recently got HK sprints. I used your videos on this subject but i still have a question for you. I set my max brake to 75% in the software as I usually race gt3, however even with that set, I am hitting abs all the time and not sure why. I can even lower it to like 70% snd the ABS is still kicking on. I don’t run terrible times, 2:03.5 at Sebring and 2:21 at spa. So could you please help me fix this or understand why this occurs? I watched Dave’s recent video in a gt3 and he doesn’t use his ultimates software at all and even engages way north of 80%+ brakes but I never once see his abs 11 lights going off. I don’t want to lose a lot of extra time. I tried turning abs off and somehow I still skid out even with the max set
First 10 sec...ya that’s about right 😂
Dan even when you're being serious it looks like you're joking 🤣
I’m always serious. Never joking. 😎
for fanatec v3 pedals: CalibMin -7500, Center 0 or 65535, Max 65535
Thank you my friend
I guess what I should’ve told you this when I open that file and I racing The file that you said would come up did so but when I open it in notepad it’s just a print out there’s no active cells to change it and I think my break breaking was 2 to 5 but I use the formula car earlier today to practice and it was getting all over the place anyway I’ll keep trying
Thank you very much for this info. I Simrace in Raceroom. Can you do something like this in R3? I use a G27. I tried lowering the break pressure, but for the cars I use the minimum is 80% and it stills locks up, not much, but still does. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.
Nice video ! Some weeks ago i try'd this and it didn't work with my Fanatec V3 pedals (cable in dd1 and not in the pc) ... Fanatec goes from 65000 to 0 in Iracing, later i changed my Calibration Min to -30000 (minus 30.000) and now i have around 80 % ... 30.000 just a number, i did not calculate that, i use the joycalib file in the setup folder of the bmw gte
i had to go as high up to -12500 to get the desired break effect.
Maybe -12500 also good for me, didnt test that ... i did -30000 and than it was about 80% ... but it is also a bit high i think, i'm still tweaking that number haha
Strange I can’t get it to work on my V3
Is this possible to do on the driver settings (like Logitech G-hub) so that it works for all games that use my wheel and pedals?
Have a feeling that I lose out in the hard braking zones especially with higher downforce cars. Where you can actually use 100% of your pedal for the initial part of braking. In other braking zones it helps allot but it makes you very vulnerable in those hard braking zones.
Definitely - this is very dependant on the car, the new LMP2 needs 100% for example :)
@@DanSuzuki that was exactly the car I was testing this with!

Hi do you know if this has stopped working? This worked perfect for so long now all of a sudden I'm getting Full brake travel in the widget and Crazy brake lock up? the file is correct I've even deleted it completely and started over but still full brakes?
What rubbers do you use on your sprints? Thanks for the video also great work.
@Jesus Christ when you want to ask someone a question who has a lot of comments coming you need to type @ then their name before you comment otherwise its just any other comment most busy YTUBERS wont see. Sometimes when you click reply to someone it will do it automatically but not always and only if your clicking reply to that person of course
Seems like that doesnt work for G29 pedals with the truebrake mod ? When i change the Values it doesnt change anything :(
CSL Elite 2 pedals, continuing locking up
-9000 min force thats it. or -11000 for less n go up as needed
Or if you own the heusinkveld sprint pedals you can do that trough smart control software without changing anything in the iracing joycal file!
you skipped this video a lot huh? KEKW
When I open the calib doc. The CalibCenter is the same as may Calib max?
@Dan Suzuki do your sprint pedals only go up to 52KG on calibration too?
Great video and so weird that this is a hidden feature like you said. Has anyone tried the magic 80% on the new Indy Car?
Thanks for the video. I'm using Fanatec v3 inverted pedals and when I generate the new file I don't see what you see for the CalibCenter is the same value as the CalibMax. I tried setting it to zero manually and it reverses the pedal input. Foot off the brake = full brake and pressing the brake in = no brake. Any suggestions?
David Sampson did this exact video weeks ago and I found this in the comments (I have V3's as well) - for those of us that use the Fanatec V3's plugged into the wheel base it will not work as you have it in the video. Our V3's when we calibrate in iracing the slider goes from 65535 to 0. So instead of increasing the max value in this example to 78642, decrease the 20% as a negative number in the min value. in this example, you would change min value from 0 to -13107 and dont change the center or max values. in case you want to add this info for other situations like this. Again, thanks for the info
