A great reaction to this great classic song and riff! Well done, as usual! This was Ritchie Blackmore playing lead guitar, Ian Gillan singing, Ian Paice, drums, Jon Lord, organ, and Roger glover, bass. This was 1972, so it's lucky there is any video at all.
@@darrellwhitman4756 I don`t care what you call it , in my opinion I like this line up the best , maybe because this was the line up when I started listening to Deep Purple .
The whole Made in Japan album is a masterpiece. Well worth reacting to all of the tracks on it. A lot of improvs and stellar musicianship. Good reaction, you now have another subscriber 🎸
Nice reaction👍. Yes these were the first British bands to come up with hard rock: Deep Purple, Black Sabat and Led Zeppelin. Comment to Highway Star live from the same concert!
Ritchie Blackmore the guitar player said when they recorded this album Machine Head they just finished in time because the police came because they were caught for too much noise coming out of the room one man's noise is another man's poetry
The Funky Claude in the lyrics is Claude Nobs, who ran the Montreaux Jazz Festival for many years. There’s a picture of him on the Machine Head gatefold.
The legendary Ritchie Blackmore! After Deep Purple, went on to form 'Rainbow' with the best R&R singer of all time: Ronnie Dio. Also had a classic album recorded in Japan. Did revive that band a few years back, but these days tours with his Wife Candice Knight in their Celtic Folk/Rock group: Blackmore's Night.. Lots of videos of all three bands on RUclips.
Also, crazy fact the Made in Japan album was no only a live recording but they could only record to stereo, so it was mixed live, one time time only!!!
Next Child in Time from Deep Purple in Fock 1970. A bombastic operatic epic of Wagnerian proportions .i purchased this album in 1970 and nothing like this had ever been recorded …the tune is simply template for so much music that was to become …give this listen you will not be disappointed
There's a bit more to this song. "Funky" Claude found another place right after for them to record in, The Pavillion, in central Montreux. So they sat up the gears and did a soundcheck, they learned after the soundvheck was done that the police was trying to get in and stop them while the roadies hold the doors closed pushing against the cops. So they were thrown out becouee they are as laud in the studio as in concert. The thing was that the soundcheck wasn't meant to be anything more than that and Ritchie had a riff that he played. When they a few weeks later was dine with the album, so they thought, Martin Birch ( producer of Made In Japan sitting behind the scene, their technician told them they were one song short of an album. So they remembered the soundcheck and then Gillan and Glover wrote the lyrics. And history was made. You can hear in this video that the riff continues more or less exactly duribg Ritchies solo, and that is of course the magic Jon Lord on his Hammond organ. I saw them in Sweden 87 when Ritchie decided not to do the encore, so the other four did Smoke In The Water without Ritchie, but we in the audience wasn't to upset couse Lord made it sound exactly as if Ritchie was on the stage playing.
Two thimgs: 1. guitarist is one THE greatest rock players ever - Ritchie Blackmore. 2. Deep Purple were one of the UNHOLY TRINITY of British bands. Which were Purple, Zep and Sabbath. The best live band were always Purple. Sexy band was Zep. Dark and fotever band Sabbath. Great to see you guys react.
Frank Zappa had a band called-- The Mother's of Invention. (Sort of wild and different) 😬 He was mentioned in this song as having a 'mobile' (recording vehicle). Thanks for your reactions.
Step back a couple of years to 1970 and give a listen to the studio version of Child in Time from DP in Rock. A bombastic hard rock operatic epic of Wagnerian proportions, every member of the band is on fire, the vocals and the guitar solo are outstanding ..... the tune was first recorded live in 1969 at Purple`s Concerto for Group and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and upon hearing this song Tim Rice and Lloyd Webber asked Ian Gillan to sing the role of Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar ......and to further the adventure then listen to the live version from Made in Japan ...you will not be disappointment - fasten your seatbelts
I always preferred Purple to Zeppelin and Sabbath. My first big hard rock influence (I was into the Beatles before...). I taught myself the studio solo to Smoke On The Water on a nylon string guitar. Not easy, I tell you! But it's all I had. I still play live today... The guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore... of Purple and Rainbow fame.
Great review and it is this version that made Smoke on the Water a monster around the world when it was released as the b-side of the single with the studio version …fm radio stations, college radio etc all started playing the live version ….the studio version sounds slow and tame compared to the live version ….this was the greatness of Purple …go to a concert and the songs were most often better and longer than the studio cuts …many times with other bands, their concerts were a disappointment because they could not perform as well outside of a studio
To me, yes, the Made In Japan album is the ultimate in Rock 'N' Roll!! It don't get any better! Something else interesting about this song, Smoke On The Water, when making the album, Machine Head, they had a little spot left to fill in to have a full album, so they threw this song together in like half an hour, kind of like a joke. The album is full and this turned out to be their biggest hit!!
Trivia for album charts - In the 70s Purple was bigger than Zeppelin outside North America except for 1972, 73 and 74 when Purple was bigger in the US and Canada.. For example for comparison Deep Purple in Rock was in the German charts at #1 (13 wks), Top 50 (60 wks) which is more than all Zep albums combined in the 70s. Purple had 5 number#1 albums in Germany in the 70s and Zep had 1. In Germany DP in Rock was the second biggest selling / charting album in the 70s
Follow that rabbit hole by checking out the guitarist (Ritchie Blackmore) to his next band called Rainbow featuring Ronnie James Dio on vocals. "Stargazer" is an epic classic.
