The quality of this video is so amazing that people forget that it was filmed over half a century ago and was recorded in a Granada TV studio where any movement or sound from the audience might have distracted the crew. Cameras were about the size of a washing machine and weighed as much as a man. Colour television broadcasting had been introduced in Europe by the BBC just three years prior to this, and it was only in November of the previous year that Granada began broadcasting colour. The fact that this film still exists is miraculous as it was expensive to archive film. This was long before the existence of autotune, in-ear monitors, on-line vocal coaches, radio mics, etc., and yet it looks and sounds as if it could have been filmed yesterday.
although i'm from this era of music and until recently would have agreed with you, but there are two all girl bands out of japan, lovebites and bandmaid who are on a par, if not better. i've been a metal fan all my life and lovebites are probably the most talented i've heard, nightwish also deserve a mention

Today, 54 years after this video, Deep Purple are still and permanently touring (singer, bassist and drummer the same as in the video). They even had a sensational new album out last month. Ian Gillan was the first person to sing Webber‘s Jesus Christ Superstar (1969).
The crazy thing is that Deep Purple just released their 23rd studio album (=1) this July! This line up of DP (Mark II) first came together in late summer of '69 and lasted to the summer of '73, when the singer Ian GIllan quit. He handed in his resignation from the band 6 months beforhand. The bassist Roger Glover were subsequently fired from the band. The band went through several line up changes and broke up in the summer of '76. The band was in hiatus until 1984, when the Mark II reunited. Several line up changes later, the band is still producing new music and tours extensively. Now there is only one original founding member left of the band from '68, that's the drummer, Ian Paice (76). Today the rest of the band (Mark IX) is; Vocals; Ian Gillan (79), Bass; Roger Glover(78), Keyboards; Don Airey (76), Guitar; Simon McBride (45).

Those 5 guys have as much musical talent as every band put together in this century. 1964 (Beatles) to 1994 (End of Grunge) the best 30 year stretch for music for humanity. This MK II version of Deep Purple was incredible and they are still influencing bands today. The drummer of Band-Maid, Akane Hirose, credits Deep Purple's drummer, Ian Paice, as one of her main influences and the band as one of her favorites. The organ that Jon Lord is playing is a Hammond. The B3 and C3 models were a staple of hard rock bands from that era and the Hammond sound is still used today but usually in a synthesized form rather than having to pack around a heavy Hammond and keep all of the glass vacuum tubes, complex components, moving parts, and wiring in working order.

Ian Gillan said his 'talent' was to be able to scream in tune. Case proved? I would suggest that you check out "Smoke On The Water" even if you have not heard it before, you may recognise the riff. Great reaction to a classic !! Ian was the star in the first "Jesus Christ Superstar" Musical production before Joining DP, and yes he has a unmistakable 1/8 note vibrato. He told his bandmates he had to stop singing this song after the 1972 "Live in Japan" Tour, because he was afraid it was damaging his voice. He still sings the song live, but a more subdued scream. Ian Paice's cymbal work is a classic too and Blackmore's guitar is legendary, and is credited with the beginnings of "Speed Metal" !!
One of my favourites growing up and this is a great performancw. The audience had to be quiet for the recording. That is why they didn't headbang. No autotune, so you had to sing really good. Great reaction sweetheart
For me, one of the best live performances ever. I struggle to listen to music that isn't fast as hell most of the song. It's a rare song that can run as slowly as this song does for much of the run time but still keep my attention.
Iron Maiden is a great band. Another much older band is King Crimson, check out the studio version of 21st Century Schizoid Man. Insane musicianship, won't disappoint.
Yeah there were some great bands back then, but it's not easy to find many with this much raw musical talent. For another example of their fine musicianship, listen to Lazy from their Machine Head album.

Was conscripted to our armed conflict here at the South point of Africa at the time . This song meant so much to our generation and is still relevant today . Apart from the GREAT music , the message is universal .

I always get a real buzz out of seeing twenty somethings reacting to the music of my late teens and early twenties. I am 71 now and still love my DP, as well as Rainbow, Boston, Led Zeppelin etc etc LOUD!

You really should have a listen to Rainbow, formed by DP guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, try Kill the King, Stargazer and its sequel A Light in the Black. Please try Boston too, More then a Feeling was their great hit from their first album in 1976. I bought that album for this song and loved the rest of the album. Singer Bradley Delp (RIP) had an awesome voice too.

Just stopped by to check out this reaction to Child In Time. A good introduction to the band. I love the studio version of this song, Ritchie's guitar sounds like it's heading to the stratosphere. This song is a masterpiece as is the album In Rock. Songs like Black Knight, Speed King and Hard Lovin Man are definitely bangers worth checking out. Their Machine Head album from 1972 has songs like Smoke On The Water, Space Truckin and Highway Star. Burn, Strange Kind of Woman, Fools, No One Came and Mistreated are also great. I highly recommend you watch the live 1970 in London video of Mandrake Root. You can almost hear the foundation for speed metal being laid. All master musicians who in live performances pushed their instruments to the limit. Any Jon Lord organ solo was just as meaty as any guitar solo. He was the first musician to amplify the Hammond 3 organ. I subscribed and will be checking out more of your content. Thanks for doing this video.

Child In Time is a Masterpiece. It is the format of songs to come. Songs like Stairway to Heaven, Freebird and many more. Deep Purple Mark ll is the greatest collection of talent in the business.. And Mark lll is slightly behind them. Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice and Ian Gillan were off the charts. Jon Lord, Lord of the Hammond. Roger Glover is one of the greatest Producers in the business and a great Bass Player.
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are for me the 3 best and they invented hard rock, listen to "War Pig" live in Paris by Black Sabbath or "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin and you will be ready to appreciate the excellence of the genre, good listening

In 1974 at the California Jam my daughter Sommer saw and heard deep purple through her mother‘s belly button window. She was born on a Sonny Sommer day in July couple months after the concert three months ago, I took her to see Deep Purple in Texas for her 50th birthday another Sonny Sommer day for that sweet child of mine with Deep Purple! 🎵🥰
You've not listened to a DP album? I remember seeing the Granada TV programme at the time. I could've seen DP at Leicester's De Montfort Hall but didn't want to go with our school music master. Sometime later I mentioned it to T2's Peter Dunton who replied 'We supported them there.' Do you know T2's It'll All Work Out in Boomland? Listen, maybe. The difference between music then and now? Then, a music of revolution done with skill, imagination and structure. Now, kids learning popular music at universities. Its untrue that 'anyone can do it'. That is an invention from the 1980s corporate education system/business. One cannot be taught composition; music has to come from a deeper place. The progressive music scene in its myriad forms was the vanguard of a cultural revolution. Listen to DP's Machine Head, Free's Fire and Water, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King, Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left, Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die, Van der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts, Fairport Convention's Liege and Leaf. The world was full of bands and live performances like this from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. As the boy bands , ass wriglers and synthesisers took over, the rock and blues stopped......replaced by pop nursery rhymes aimed at 10 yo girls and their 70 yo grand parents. Deep Purple were one of the best live rock acts ever, but here in Australia , we could go to the local pub for a drink and witness a band this good, but never hear of them again......those that made it were mostly exceptional live , but their watered down and over produced recordings were often not as good as the live performances. Label execs and producers can do a lot of damage to a bands music in the recording process. lol

Some suggestions from my youth 67 now would be anything by Deep purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, YES, ELP, Genisis, Jethro Tull, rolling Stones, The Animals, The Kinks, King Crimson, The Moody Blues, Tangerine dream and Hawkwind. Just for starters
This MK II version of Deep Purple was incredible and they are still influencing bands today. The drummer of Band-Maid, Akane Hirose, credits Deep Purple's drummer, Ian Paice, as one of her main influences and the band as one of her favorites.
The organ that Jon Lord is playing is a Hammond. The B3 and C3 models were a staple of hard rock bands from that era and the Hammond sound is still used today but usually in a synthesized form rather than having to pack around a heavy Hammond and keep all of the glass vacuum tubes, complex components, moving parts, and wiring in working order.

Also great live, check out the 1977 Munich Rainbow concert - "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow" are fantastic.

Great reaction to a classic !! Ian was the star in the first "Jesus Christ Superstar" Musical production before Joining DP, and yes he has a unmistakable 1/8 note vibrato.
He told his bandmates he had to stop singing this song after the 1972 "Live in Japan" Tour, because he was afraid it was damaging his voice. He still sings the song live,
but a more subdued scream. Ian Paice's cymbal work is a classic too and Blackmore's guitar is legendary, and is credited with the beginnings of "Speed Metal" !!
One of my favourites growing up and this is a great performancw. The audience had to be quiet for the recording. That is why they didn't headbang. No autotune, so you had to sing really good. Great reaction sweetheart

For me, one of the best live performances ever. I struggle to listen to music that isn't fast as hell most of the song. It's a rare song that can run as slowly as this song does for much of the run time but still keep my attention.
I kinda felt the same when editing. I was glued to that performance but I didn't realise how long it went for till I edited it.
Iron Maiden is a great band. Another much older band is King Crimson, check out the studio version of 21st Century Schizoid Man. Insane musicianship, won't disappoint.

Yeah there were some great bands back then, but it's not easy to find many with this much raw musical talent. For another example of their fine musicianship, listen to Lazy from their Machine Head album.

Was conscripted to our armed conflict here at the South point of Africa at the time . This song meant so much to our generation and is still relevant today . Apart from the GREAT music , the message is universal .

Lead singer Ian Gillian sang the part of Jesus on the original album of Jesus Christ Superstar. There is a video of him singing Gethsemane in a studio that really shows his talent.
I always get a real buzz out of seeing twenty somethings reacting to the music of my late teens and early twenties. I am 71 now and still love my DP, as well as Rainbow, Boston, Led Zeppelin etc etc LOUD!

You really should have a listen to Rainbow, formed by DP guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, try Kill the King, Stargazer and its sequel A Light in the Black. Please try Boston too, More then a Feeling was their great hit from their first album in 1976. I bought that album for this song and loved the rest of the album. Singer Bradley Delp (RIP) had an awesome voice too.

Just stopped by to check out this reaction to Child In Time. A good introduction to the band. I love the studio version of this song, Ritchie's guitar sounds like it's heading to the stratosphere. This song is a masterpiece as is the album In Rock. Songs like Black Knight, Speed King and Hard Lovin Man are definitely bangers worth checking out. Their Machine Head album from 1972 has songs like Smoke On The Water, Space Truckin and Highway Star. Burn, Strange Kind of Woman, Fools, No One Came and Mistreated are also great. I highly recommend you watch the live 1970 in London video of Mandrake Root. You can almost hear the foundation for speed metal being laid. All master musicians who in live performances pushed their instruments to the limit. Any Jon Lord organ solo was just as meaty as any guitar solo. He was the first musician to amplify the Hammond 3 organ. I subscribed and will be checking out more of your content. Thanks for doing this video.

That entire lineup were incredibly talented musicians, easily hall of famer's, each and every one of them.
Child In Time is a Masterpiece. It is the format of songs to come. Songs like Stairway to Heaven, Freebird and many more. Deep Purple Mark ll is the greatest collection of talent in the business.. And Mark lll is slightly behind them. Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice and Ian Gillan were off the charts. Jon Lord, Lord of the Hammond. Roger Glover is one of the greatest Producers in the business and a great Bass Player.
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are for me the 3 best and they invented hard rock, listen to "War Pig" live in Paris by Black Sabbath or "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin and you will be ready to appreciate the excellence of the genre, good listening

Funny you mention Maiden, Purple's Ian Gillan was a big influence/inspiration to Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. If I'm not mistaken.

In 1974 at the California Jam my daughter Sommer saw and heard deep purple through her mother‘s belly button window. She was born on a Sonny Sommer day in July couple months after the concert three months ago, I took her to see Deep Purple in Texas for her 50th birthday another Sonny Sommer day for that sweet child of mine with Deep Purple! 🎵🥰

You've not listened to a DP album? I remember seeing the Granada TV programme at the time. I could've seen DP at Leicester's De Montfort Hall but didn't want to go with our school music master. Sometime later I mentioned it to T2's Peter Dunton who replied 'We supported them there.' Do you know T2's It'll All Work Out in Boomland? Listen, maybe. The difference between music then and now? Then, a music of revolution done with skill, imagination and structure. Now, kids learning popular music at universities. Its untrue that 'anyone can do it'. That is an invention from the 1980s corporate education system/business. One cannot be taught composition; music has to come from a deeper place. The progressive music scene in its myriad forms was the vanguard of a cultural revolution. Listen to DP's Machine Head, Free's Fire and Water, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King, Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left, Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die, Van der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts, Fairport Convention's Liege and Leaf. Great music from a changing time.

The world was full of bands and live performances like this from the late 1960's to the early 1980's.
As the boy bands , ass wriglers and synthesisers took over, the rock and blues stopped......replaced by pop nursery rhymes aimed at 10 yo girls and their 70 yo grand parents.
Deep Purple were one of the best live rock acts ever, but here in Australia , we could go to the local pub for a drink and witness a band this good, but never hear of them again......those that made it were mostly exceptional live , but their watered down and over produced recordings were often not as good as the live performances.
Label execs and producers can do a lot of damage to a bands music in the recording process. lol

70 years old got my 10-year-old granddaughter can 4 year old granddaughter watch this with me and then we practice the screaming he does it makes for a great time my grandkids and I have a great time yelling

Since that he has gone on to play in Blackmore's Night - British/American traditional folk rock band formed in 1997

There are so many tracks to enjoy from them with a few line-ups too! Make sure you don't miss the early days of Rainbow as a suggestion - especially the live tracks!
