LAWN ROLLER FLATTENS THE YARD! 😎👨🌾🚜👩🌾

- Why would you use a lawn roller and how do you go about using it? When's the best time of year to roll your lawn? It's spring time in Michigan and I'm on a mission to get a short cut lawn. I need it to be super flat and the lawn roller will help take out the undulations that have been there since the dawn of time, haha! Plus, they are good for leveling out mole hills and other rodent damage. Try not to use a lawn roller in the dead of summer as this can be stressful to grass. Also, avoid doing so right after a very heavy rain as you could create too much compaction. The best time to do so is an application such as in this video where it rained the entire previous day, but then had time to dry out some overnight and early morning. Damp soil allows for some compaction without going too crazy. After all, your lawn's root system needs space for air, nutrients, and water.
So, if you like watching tractor stuff, then you may enjoy watching this lawn roller video just because! On the other hand, if you're in the market for a lawn roller, tractor attachment, or even a tractor itself, then I'd be happy to help! Thanks so much for watching, please consider Subscribing to my channel (totally free), give a Thumbs Up and leave a comment. Have a great day!

Great video looking forward to seeing your future lawn care videos. I have a lawn roller that I probably haven’t used in 18 years. Your video inspired me to connect It up to my 1025 and roll my lawn tomorrow.
Haha, enjoy your tractor time!
love the double wheels on the tractor. Need to get me some of those.
Seeing your boy driving reminded me of mine about 20 yrs ago first time letting him drive the JD316 , got a phone call , came out back to see how he was doing and he was standing on seat going down the yard like a giant skate board. It's funny now but not back then.
Ha, yes funny in hindsight for sure!
Love those dually’s!!
Thanks for the video. Airways look forward to yours. Also looks like you have an excellent film crew working for you!
I sure do, thanks for watching Terry!

Thank you Pastor!
Really enjoy your videos, and that first line was hilarious.
Haha, thanks John!
Great work Luke, your learning from one of the best.
Ha, yeah right. Luke's outdoing me in many things...I don't want to talk about our b-ball game of P-I-G last night. Grr!
He had to start somewhere. My kids are outdoing me at everything. It’s a good feeling to know I must have done something right raising them lol.
I appreciate you thanks for these awesome videos buddy
Thank you sir!
Looking forward to the lawn care videos! I have 2032r on a 3/4 acre lot in Jackson, MI. Throwing down hard with Greene County Fert products and some Pete’s GCI Turf Fescue. Get it brotha!
Ha, thanks Mike!
What’s up from Jackson Michigan myself!
Nice job Luke!

Funny with po arking brake. Last Nov 2019 I did the same thing with Craftsman lawn tractor and hydrostatic trans. Started driving with parking brake on and burned up 16 year old drive belt.
I need one of these for our lawn, it’s filled with surface mole tunnels that need tamped down.
Nice job on the video....nice and steady good roll job
Yes, Luke did great! Thanks for watching
Looks like u live the good life! Con grats to the business. I hope to buy one from u soon!
Thanks for watching Derek!
Just a bit of advice, don't make your goal to have a short lawn or it will come back to bite you. By the way this is coming to you from someone that is a horticulturalist and chief gardener for many years. The roots really don't like to get so hot, they like to live in the shade of the stem and leaves of the plant itself. I like to keep a lawn at two inches all summer and shorten it up in the spring and fall. You have to watch how much you push that lawn too because the more sweet and succulent those roots are the more chance you will get grubs feasting on them.
My prediction: there will soon be a video from Tractor Works titled “How to adjust your parking break so it actually works.” PS: *Nice job Luke. You drove that machine like a pro!*
Ha! Never know Doug!
hahaha, and maybe how to replace sprinker heads after using a roller.
You made a cool video
Actually in the northern states, the best time to roll the ground is in the spring when the frost is gone. The roller flattens the frost heaves so the ground is flat which makes it easier to cut the lawn and make it looking nice........
I agree, I hear a lot that folks want to do it in the fall though
I have to concur with that assessment.
I’ve noticed some likes from you popping up on my favorite lawn guys. I’ve learned a lot from them!
I’ve been rolling now for the last 3 years, and I bounce around a lot less as I’m mowing. I try to aerate as soon as possible after rolling and I do four passes (horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals) I don’t know how much that reverses any compaction from my roller, but at least it makes me feel better.
Is that roller something that you offer or may offer in the future? I searched and searched, but never found one that I felt was quality. I ended up getting one from the farm store for around $250. After just 3 seasons, the thin metal is already starting to get dimples and the tongue is so short that I have to make excessively wide turns. If the metal on the roller itself were stronger, I’d have a fab shop make me a longer/stronger tongue with a quality set of bearings.
Yeah, I blame them for my short cut grass fling, haha!
Get a used 125 gallon propane tank and have the fab shop build you one. That's what I used when I built mine. That was 28 yrs ago and not a ding anywhere and I'll drive it over anything, including trap rock, rip rap, etc. It doesn't care !
It’s now almost a year since you posted this video and, as a subscriber and probable customer before too long, it seems to me that these videos only get more beneficial over time. Now, there’s a year’s worth of comments from experienced guys who share broad use knowledge to go with yours. The equipment and operational advice is no less valuable than it was, but the content added by your “Good Works” community - particularly if you live in Michigan/Great Lakes region - is Golden.
I bought the 6 foot roller with my 2038R but not until June of 2020. Actually used it for the first time yesterday on heavy clay “acreage” that I mow but it gets rutted until the water evaporates away. I’m going to pull the roller every time I’m mow that area until it firms. My hope is that for the rest of the season, years of tooth shattering bumps will have disappeared. 🤞🤞🤞
To me, year after you made it, this video is better than ever.
Hi Lee, very kind of you. Thanks so much for following along!
Good Morning ! Sorry to hear ur not moving.....
Me too 😪
It's cute to hear what people who are used to driving road vehicles impression of what tractor brakes should do. Even when putting a pick-up truck with an automatic in park, then driving a tractor onto a trailer connected to a pick-up ... if the trucks drive tires are on an incline, get ready for an exciting ride ... the brakes on a tractor are kinda a mild hint to stop. Keep in mind, the gearing of a tractor is such that if you put your bucket down, you can lift your front tires, and drive forward, only once the bucket is digging in does even that stop the tractor. Mine is at the borderline of pulling either a small 3 bottom, or large 2 bottom plow.
There might just be a reason that tractor derived from the root phrase "traction engine" just be secure in the knowledge that your brakes are just hints to stop, and drive it accordingly.
If I purchased a large roller like this one do you think my skid loader would be fine pulling it, or do you think the tires would indent the ground too much?
I rolled 1 acre yesterday with my X738. Did a pretty good job of flattening mole runs in my neighbors yard. looks like we have the same roller including the red plastic plug that will turn almost white. I bought a brass pipe plug last fall but cannot find it now.
Nice videography and good to see Rosie.
Nice, glad to hear it. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
I did my lawn this weekend used a 6 foot roller and about 1,200 lbs. Did 6 acres
can you hook it right to the draw bar? Looking to pick up a 6' from tractor supply soon.
@@JoeSoslick I have a drawbar with 2" ball connection as a trailer hitch. Works perfectly all my attachments.
LOL. Good man admitting your mistakes. Good to get your kid some seat time. Sure beats video games.
It is fine two cut no shorter them two inches if you water or get at least 1 1/2 inches of rain with in a week also to pervert scalping with your 60 inch deck .
Yeah, water, fert, etc not an issue here. I mow now with a 3 reel Toro Reelmaster 3100D. Currently set at 1.25".
Hey noticed your air compressor in the background I was wondering what you think of it I've been highly considering one is it any good?
Yes, I have two of them and really like them.
2 things, Courtney (and other folks' comments would be welcome too, of course!):
1. I've got a yard that's not really a "lawn" like yours is. It's just Bahia grass, and what we cut with the zero-turn mower or finish mower is about 3 acres (about 2 with the former, 1ish with the latter). We live in the deep south where there's really no clay to speak of, mostly dirt, and very few rocks in the soil. It's basically flat land, but with some fairly large undulations because of stuff like buildings, pools, septic systems, and drainage across the lawn. However, because of trees being cut and other equipment being moved around, we have ended up with some undesirable ruts and holes, which makes for a bumpy ride on any mower or tractor.
2. I've read that if a yard is wet or soft enough for a lawn roller to be effective, the weight of a tractor (JD 3038e, in my case) will create more problems than the roller will fix. Do you think that's the case with my type of yard?
OK, I guess I now have to add #3...
3. I started asking you all of this because I was considering buying a roller from you (or at least checking prices), but looking on your website I don't even see any for sale. Do you sell them, and if so can you include a link? Thanks!
Hey Tim, there's a fine line with lawn firmness when using a lawn roller. I don't think these work well for ruts or holes, but rather mole damage and frost heaving. Perhaps someone else with experience in your situation will chime in. The manufacturer I sell only makes them once a year for the spring, so I won't have any for quite some time unfortunately.
@@GoodWorksTractors thank you for the reply! There aren't many folks out there who would admit to a potential customer that what they're considering buying probably isn't what they need. Integrity -- what a concept! That's one reason I enjoy doing business with you. Thanks again.
Wait ur in Kzoo what I’m in Martin guess I need to come take a look for goodies
Good job Luke.
Sounds like the parking brake on that tractor isn't very effective.
The "Cat 1 Quickhitch" looks like it is Cat 2.
I agree!
It just tells you how strong the machine is. It’s towing 1300 lbs with it set
I have a garden hose just like that.
Costco maybe? Can't recall.
where'd you get the reelmaster from? i've looked for decent used one's to install a backyard chipping/putting green.
bought it from a guy in Alabama. Less than 700 hours.
Looked like you had a 3 pt fertilizer spreader in your garage? I'm looking to buy an electric or pto driven?
Yeah, Ag Spray electric sprayer. Just finished setting it up today. 4.5 cubic feet, good for seed, fert, and ice pellets even. 5' to 45' spread pattern too.
Did you quit carrying this 72" roller? Can't find it on your website
My man you definitely need to tighten up the brake pedal linkage. With it properly adjusted, the hydraulics cannot overpower the brake, let alone gravity parked on a hill. Not even close or almost. It will go into relief and go nowehre. That adjustment might make a good how-to video too!
Maybe so, good idea!
What is the reason why you cannot put dual tires on with a mower deck? It doesn’t look like they get in the way.
The brackets for the rear gauge wheels interfere. I've seen others cut and reweld them in a different location.
Well thats why the parking brake dont work. One year a guy with a lifted silverado that was 80s ish model that was lifted with 35? tires on it blasting the mud holes on moms road. I heard high revving repeatedly so i hop in my trk and go up the road and find him thinkin it was another mud hole. Wrong sink hole bud so his one tire was gone in the mud. I told him i cant pull him with my 2wd trk but ill get the tractor. I was on a hill setting up for the pull and set my one side brake and pulled him out with brake still on. Lol. Oops
Haha, yikes!
Can I ask where you got the roller?
What brand name is the lawn roller??? I would like to get a 6ft wide one.
Timber King is the brand, thanks!
Hey buddy how big of a lawn roller should I get for a 1023e John Deere

That is definitely a nice heavy duty roller. I have an economy version. Got to be careful I don’t beat it up as it’s not commercial at all. Kool-Aid budget!
What brand of roller is that?
My 2015 will not override my parking brake. The engine will all but stall out. And hydrostatic transmission will just set and whine.
Might need an adjustment?
@@GoodWorksTractors I would say so. Mine (2019) also cant over power the parking brake.
Do you think an X590 is capable of pulling that around a yard similar to yours, maybe a slightly steeper slope.
Yes, definitely, just go with a little bit smaller version Timber King Lawn Rollers...48" are $700, 60" are $770, 72" are $900 plus tax. Standard Features: Greasable bearings,1" diameter through shaft, 10 gauge steel, scraper, reinforced end caps, 1" fill plug

@@eosjoe565 thanks. What about a weighted down pull behind plug aerator? Do you think that would be ok on slopes too? I have 17 degrees slopes at the hilliest (is that a word?) on my lawn.
what brand is that roller please?
Rolling grass? Far out dude, that's groovy! LoL. Seriously tho, dad had a smaller version that the guys could use by hand on the greens. When the weather & seasons were right, he would supervise how the guys rolled the greens, creating some very clever "breaks" in the putting surface. LoL!
Ha! Wow, could actual provide a little contour with the roller? That's crazy and explains why I've missed so many putts!
@@GoodWorksTractors yes, Dad was quite the clever golf pro. I seem to remember it was 3 feet wide, & 1worker could push it easily. The members soon figured it out by the odd shaped "stripes" it left, & needless to say they weren't really amused, LOLOL! So, he stopped.....😁

I have same thing but mine is also filled with sand instead of water, took some time to pour sand into roller but weighs a lot more than just water. Downfall have to have it hooked up to move, too heavy period to push by hand on every level. Bonus do not have to drain during winter because sand does not freeze if it's dry sand.
@Boatdesigner Did you purchase it from somewhere? Or make it yourself
That really seems like an engineering flaw; not to mention liability exposure. If it’s in park, that machine should not move. 🤔

One question you did not answer. Did it work? Was the yard more level?
Hard to gauge that, but it did take out the heaved areas and rodent damage from the fall/winter/early spring. So, I guess it noticeably helped with that.

The shorter you mow the less you need to mow. But the downfall to that idea is the quicker your grass will burn during a drought.
I'm a watering fanatic.
Also cutting it short increases the growth and spreading of weeds.... This is why it is recommended that you cut your grass at a height of 4 inches.

How to Properly Roll a Lawn
Roll a lawn when the ground is damp but not soaked.
Do not use too heavy of a roller. Use a lightweight roller when you roll out a grass lawn.
The best time when to roll the lawn is in the spring.
Do NOT roll clay heavy soil. Clay heavy soil is more prone to compaction than other kinds of soil.
Agreed
Do you sell rollers a big one
