When I was a kid making hunting & fishing gear was always featured in the outdoor magazines. The first project I made in junior high wood shop was a fish reel for my bow on the lathe. It was rather intimidating using that big wood lathe for the first time but I managed to make my project.
Hello 357 Magdad , I'm A Bass Fisherman . But I Lived Once Where A Brook Ran Through the Back Yard . Made My own Spinner out Of A Paperclip, Red Beads and An Old Treble hook . Got My1st Brook Trout on It !
That bend you made at the 3 minute mark was MONEY man ! I knew there had to be a better way to bend those with out messing around with 2 different pairs of pliers ,i just had not figured it out yet . Thank you a bunch !
Great video, over the years I have used Janns Netcraft for a lot of fishing related equipment. I mostly used them for rod building stuff. Making your own rod and then using it to catch fish is very rewarding. Lure making is also rewarding and it hurts a lot less when you lose one.
Your daughter was saying, get that thing out of my face! LOL. Awesome lures. Giving me hope to build my own, but alas, another hobby! Coin collecting, old tool restoration, my 64 Chevy C10, leather work, rock hounding..... Great video.
Great build. I usually like Rooster tails as spinner baits. I will be at the quarry tomorrow fishing for bass and trout. I live around a lot of water freshwater as well as saltwater.
Lol... that picture of the fish with your Daughter was great!!...Nice work on the Lures and an interesting process ....I made some fly fishing lures when I was a kid but never leaned how to fly fish ......Thumbs up!!
Thats very cool brother... Im not a fisherman because the area i live only has trash fish in discusting water...but i very much enjoy all sorts of crafts..
Great video!!! I'm going to do some of your tips !!! We had a outdoor club in junior high back in the 70s and our shop teacher taught us to make spinners, been doing it ever since 🎉 We couldn't get "stucki spoon" spinners any more, Dad would buy the entire display!!! So I made our own, still catch a lot with them and big one's 😉 I give some away to friends and I Love it when they tell me about the amount and big fish they caught.😊
Looked like fun. Never tried making lures. Used to do a lot of fishing when I was a kid. But life got busy and it's been some time since I have. Watching you makes me think I just might start back up. No trout in Kansas but sometimes they have a special stocking of them in a local lake. We have other fish to. With my health I don't work so time to fish. Thanks
Thanks Glen! I don't take the fishing too seriously anymore. I try to get out on nice Sunday afternoons for a couple hours. It's a good excuse to be outside!
So much fyn making them. In South Africa, spinner parts are not available. I got French blades, willow blades and Colorado blades on Temu. Great quality, by the way. Also ordered different size brass beads and clevises. I will fish with them soon. Thanks for a great video on how to make them.
Great video! I saw a picture of Bernard pliers in the book. lol Tool Guy... Otisville, Mi is just down the highway from where I live. Super great lures. Now I am back in Michigan my wife and I will get to go fishing a lot more. 🐟🐟🐟🤞
Someday would love to take you small stream trout fishing here in the Rockies. For many, many years I was a serious fly tier including eventually full dress Atlantic Salmon flies. Alas, after cancer not only do I have trouble fishing (every time out since my transplant I fall in the river or pond), but the damage to my fine motor coordination ended my fly tying. But I've kept it all as my adult son is slowly showing interest in the sport. Spinners are great especially for smallmouth in the spring when they are protecting their beds! Have fun, good friend.
Thanks Marc! I've dabbled in fly fishing and fly tying with little success. Every year I say this is the year I'll try fly fishing again. Maybe this year.....
That's a great money saving idea and if i hadn't known that you made them i would think they were store bought. That's a nice trout! My biggest is an 18" brown.
Nice looking lures. I wanted to go fishing so I bought a boat, rods & reels, and lots of tackle. To date the only fish I have caught were from the bank looking at my boat full of said gear! I discovered I like boating more than fishing so no great loss, we have a lot of beautiful reservoir lakes near me.
@@357magdad This boat isn't too bad. It's a 13' rowboat with a 30 horse Evinrude. At it's top speed of 37mph the only thing touching the water is the lower drive unit, it literally "flies"!
Been thinking about making my own lures & have seen your maker & wondered about it. I like to K.I.S.S. things so your process was great! Very nice video.
Very creative! I never got into making my own lures because they always seemed too difficult. However seeing you make those lures easily makes me think twice why I’d spend twice as much for them at the store. Well done👍
Lures are expensive! I recently lost one of my Rapala minnows and I went to Cabelas to replace it and I almost fainted in the aisle when I saw the price!
Thanks Wayne! I actually did use Flitz to shine up the brass! The spinner parts had been sitting around for years and had tarnished and I wanted them pretty for the video!
Cool video, but I never learned how to trout fish with lures. I always used salmon eggs, a number 10 barbed hook that would bury entirely in the egg, and a splitshot. Drifting it under side brush normally had my limit within an hour or so. Sometimes though i did note there were days when this technique was not working and the trout were every once in awhile hitting people using lures.. Sometimes I think the trout get together and have a morning talk over what they will all hit on that day. Spent an awful lot of my life wading the trout streams and filling the freezer that way. I stopped b/c the PA fish commission priced themselves out of the masses of fishermen they used to have in our state. Then after imposing a special trout stamp on top of it all they cut back the limit from 5 to 7 while always saying, "This cut back won't change your trout fishing experience." I had a good talk with the local officials asking to explain to me how 5 was the same as 7 - I actually did keep calm and nice about it all. But he just got angry with me and hung up the phone. Our local stores used to be CROWDED with an aisle or two of trout fishing gear and fishermen a couple weeks before the season opened. That business rush was killed by the prices going up and limits on fish. The last season I trout fished there was no special section anymore and I had to have help finding the salmon eggs. So Sad. Anyway, thanks again for showing how this works and I loved the pic of your daughter with the trout!
Hey great video thanks I’m going to give this a shot. As dumb as it is I’m having trouble sourcing the beads would you mind posting a link for where you buy yours? The ones I find are either too big, not available, or for nymphing or jewelry (with patterns on them)
I'll probably never make this but however it was very entertaining to watch! I checked out your instagram the other day (trough my girlfriend's since I don't have any) you had some very nice projects lately, I was really impressed.
Thanks Alex! Evapo-rust is having a March Madness challenge on Instagram and I have a few projects I plan to enter. I'll try to share them in my next RUclips video.
+357magdad I just love watching this video. The brass spinner blade with the brass beads looks great. Your other video's I just discovered and now a subscriber with the bell notification. I'm getting all the material to make spinning lures but having a hard time finding the 'solid brass' beads (I can get the silver ones). Do you have a suggestion or a link to purchase? I'm in Canada but don't mind buying online. Today I ordered the Jenns Netcraft Tool but and on their site I couldn't find any brass beads. Thanks!
I am not much of a fisherman, but those lures are quite alluring!😂 They have brass and steel, but no wood? The picture at the end is priceless. How long has it been since your daughter has seen that picture?
Thanks James! Mrs Magdad and I had to do some digging to find that photo! Our daughter was surprised - she didn't remember the photo or the fish story!
Dang, man. There ain't nothing you cant do! How deep do those run? I use spinners here with quite a few feathers in them but I'm fishing a deep lake with a strong river current below.
I fish mostly small streams, but I like the french blade and the solid brass beads because they make the lure heavier, so it casts farther and runs deeper.

I dabbled in rod making when I was in my late teens. I bought the parts from Netcraft back then! I got into making spinners just to save some money!
Your video was an extremely helpful reference. From a fellow New Jersey trout fisherman I thank you for posting. Tight lines, my friend.
Thanks Gary! Good luck!

357magdad she’s a cutie. I have some like that of my girls. But now they are almost 30 and almost 26. But I don’t feel old.....

Thanks D&R! I've toyed with both fly tying and fly fishing. I liked tying the flies more than the fly fishing!
Good video. I tie flies and streamers. Very satisfying when you make it and use it and then catch a fish. Fishing next month can’t wait.! Thanks
Thanks Tony! I've dabbled in fly tying and fly fishing. I enjoyed tying the flies more than waving around the fly rod!
Very cool. I love fishing with my ultralite. Those turns that make up the eye look first class. Cheers
Thanks Joe! The wire forming tool does a nice job!
Very nicely done, Magdad. I bet the fish really go after those. ~Jeff
I've had good luck with these spinners! It"s fun to catch fish on a homemade lure!

Interesting video mate. A good way to overcome lure loss. 🇦🇺👍
