I have NEVER equated this song with unrequited love. What I believe its about is the numbing daily grind which breaks us all down. Some of us have been beaten down by circumstances or by others and have tried to switch off their emotions to deal with the onslaught. Unfortunately when you try to keep the awful out that way you also keep out the good and it ends up leaving you feeling dead inside.
I’ve sang this song dozens of times in karaoke and I always feel the unrequited love throughout the song, crying for help and acceptance. One of my favorite! Thanks for reacting to this one 🎉
This was actually a forced collaboration by the record label. They wanted Amy to basically take a back seat and the band be like Linkin Park essentially. Amy actually wrote this about her now husband and Ben was actually her abuser

Ben actually abandoned and quit the band on very first tour when they got to Europe. He hasn’t been a part of the band since this album
