Just finished using Behr #64 on my 700 square foot deck today. I made the huge mistake of painting the deck with Behr latex deck paint five years ago. It was peeling after the first winter and became much worse over the next four years. After much trial & error, we rolled on the stripper when we had shade, waited ten minutes, dampened the stripper with a tank sprayer on mist, then after 30 minutes, applied the second roll-on coat of stripper. At 45 minutes, we dampened again with the tank sprayer. At one hour, we started my Simpson 3100 psi gas powered pressure washer and the paint rolled off in sheets. Strip the paint, come back to clean the knots and it turned out fantastic. Next is sanding with a 12x18 orbital rental sander, then seal with an oil base sealer. This was a good two week project.
About to strip the same Behr latex (Cordova Brown) off of our deck. Put it down last year and it’s peeling badly everywhere despite a full prep (sanding, cleaning, full dry). Never doing latex stain again.
Massive job. Very well done. Our deck isn’t as big, it has been neglected for many years. There was an orange colored stain on it. It was covered with moss, mold, etc. it’s been pressure washed and My next step is stripping the remaining coating that won’t come up with our pressure washer. Thank You for sharing this.
I need to remove existing stains from my deck..my deck is probably 25-30% of yours, thanks for this video, I tried power wash with 2/10 result, now I am going to use Behr Stain and finish stripper, you know what- I will give your video 10 star. Again thanks
I just tried Behr 7-26-22 stripper. on the deck is Behr stain that is brutal to remove using 2800 psi washer and this stripper. 10 hour job 4 gallons is stripper. Some stripper got on the sideboards, non Behr stain and took it right off. thus the stain you put down determines the effectiveness of the stripper. it won't work miricles for everyone.
Hi Al, Glad you liked it. Just remember this product works really well removing semi transparent stains. Solid stains will require multiple applications and lots of elbow grease.
Well heck. Stuff looks like it works really good. I probably need to get a couple more jugs but that’s pretty amazing how well that worked. I just got one jug to try it out and my deck is about 700’sq
Hi Nicole, Thank you very much. I hope it helps. Just a reminder, I took off a semi solid stain with this. A solid stain or Deckover will be heaps harder.

Thanks for the video. it's interesting because the reviews for this product are either very positive, or extremely negative. I'm doing a test section of my deck now, so I guess we'll see if it's because the product is bad, or the other youtubers can't follow instructions. For me it's not a stain issue. I have paint splotches all over the deck from some rushed house painting. But also the previous owner never took care of the outside so it had considerable mold and mildew issues which I was able to mostly clean with a pressure washer. hoping the stripper will lighten some of the spots the pressure washer didn't work on. Going out ever 5-10 mins or so and just misting it with my hose since there appears to be an issue with it staining the deck white like it's covered in a calcium deposit. 30 mins to go, and we'll see how she cleans up.
Idk if he mentioned it in the video, but keep everything wet before you apply the stripper and during. I just breezed through $40 worth of stripper by applying to a dry deck with too thin a coat when it was hot out. Mine dried up in minutes and I didn’t know to rewet and let set. Good luck to you!
Of course I didn’t do that. So it didn’t do anything. Thank you !! However I started flipping all the boards. They look new. I’ll never use a solid stain ever again. Thank you again
Exactly ... tried the product on mine which had 2 coats of paint on for about 3 years and did not work well at all.. need to have it professionally sanded.
I use this same product in my deck restoration business. Its $18 per galleon half the cost of similar products and it washes off the tray or roller. I also agree that you need to keep the application damp. I lightly wet the deck 30 minutes before application and then apply the stripper. It works fast and easily rinses off.
Hi John, in your experience using it did you find it more difficult to get up a solid stain? My steps had a solid on it and even with 2 applications it was a bitch to get up
@@jamescapone8592 Hello: I had a homeowner that painted over the stain so they had 2 coats of paint/sealer on top of 2 coats of stain/sealer. The Behr product easily dissolved most of the paint and stain with 1 coat with some some tint of stain left so I reapplied another light coat of Behr let sit for 20 minutes and everything came off. Your steps just may be a odd case. I've used all the strippers on the market and this product is the best on price and professional results. Best regards.
@@jamescapone8592 I have been having the same issue. I had to scrub..and scrub..and scrub...I used a scraper...i power washed again..and again....I'm going to have to apply a second time to see if it gets the rest off.
I'm thinking of doing this to some cedar siding I have on the house. Would I need to cover windows or concrete to keep the runoff from ruining anything?
I guess I did the mistake of following the instructions on the Behr youtube video of leaving the product for 15 minutes, I will try again leaving for 45 and hope to save a lot of sanding because it didn't worked as good as this video.
I tried the exact same recipe but with no success. My original 7-year old stain was solid red from Behr so I thought that a Behr stripper would provide the best results to remove it. After 2 attempts (full cycle of applying the stripper, add a mist of water when it was about to dry out, wait 45 minutes, used a brush and finally the pressure washer) no could do. Less than 5% was removed. I simply don't understand why it didn't work for me the way it worked for you but I would certainly not give a 10 to this product. I went this way because of your video post that was looking promising. Now I need to search for a better product that can do the job in one pass.
Hi Guy, the stain I removed was a semi Transparent. I said in the video that I tried the stripper on a solid stain from the steps and it did not work as well. I said would probably need 2 solids coats and a good scrubbing to come up, which you did and obviously it didn’t work.
Thanks Jim for reminding me of this subtlety (solid vs. semi-transparent). I had assumed this product would do the job on any type of Behr stain. The instructions don't say anything about a lower efficiency on solid colors. Sure thing, I will stay away from solid colors from now on. I chose solid at the time because according to the Behr brochure, it was supposed to last 10 years on decks and 20 on fences and siding. Divide these numbers by 3 to get the real numbers... If someone reading this knows a product that'll do the work for me, please let me know.
I also have a solid Behr deck stain on the deck. It's barn red. There were multiple layers on a section of deck i stripped. Applyed product...scrubbed with deck brush...hit with power washer...it started coming up. You could see the layers coming off. Scrub again and I mean really really scrub. Spray again. And again...Scrub...Spray. After 3 or 4 founds of that I did get off a good amount, but not all of it.
I’m having the same issue. My wife dosent like the stain I put on our fence it’s a behr cedar natural tone. I sprayed about 300 sqft on already. I’m hoping the product you used works to take it off fast and easy! Any quick tips FYI it’s a transparent stain
This is exactly what I was looking for. thank you. Once your stripped this Behr deckover, what did you end up doing with the deck, staining, another deckover or how did you finish this deck?
Hi there, is it better to do it in sections? We just did ours using the same product and half the stain did not come off so the deck look very blotchy now. We’ll have to apply the stuff a 2nd time I guess? The stain we were trying to remove was a semi transparent stain. Is it normal for people to have to apply this stuff twice to remove all the stain? Hi Chris, a lot of the stripper and stain went down in between the boards but there was a good amount that went over the side. I would suggest just covering the walkway the best that you can and power wash as you go. I had to go outside my deck after each section I did to power wash the siding. Most of it came off the wood so I would think it wouldn’t hurt the walkway as long as you didn’t let it sit too long. Hope this helps. Good luck
The product instructions say apply to dry then keep moist by misting with hose . During the 40 minutes that the product was applied I was constantly misting every now and again would reapply prod lightly.
Hi Mego, the stain was water based but I used it last week on another section of decking that I’m working on . I had some overlap from a Cabots oil based stain and it took it up quite nicely.
Hi Mike, The stripper ran off side of the deck and settled on the area of the lawn where I weed whack close to bottom edge so no real harm to grass. I did however cover some plants I have around our pool to protect them. Also got some spray on a cherry blossom branch and killed some leaves. Protect what you can.
Great video, thank you so much. There are some really bad reviews on other channels but I think most people don't use it correctly. I'm doing my deck tomorrow but I could literally strip it by hand with a scraper.
Hi David, sorry for the late reply The stain I took off was Olympic Elite Semi Transparent Semi Solid. The pressure washer I used was 1650psi. I made sure not to pressure wash to close to avoid damaging the pressure treated pine. On the steps I had the same stain but in a solid. That was a bitch to get up. Hope this helps. Cheers
"some people in the house don't like the color..." well, those people can come out and change it. I'm sure you checked for their opinion on the color/stain before you completed the entire deck last year....or at least I hope so!
@@jamescapone8592 Oh jeez, hahaha, I found your video because I plan on staining a picnic table, everywhere seems to be recommending deck stain for patio/outdoor furniture....if you can redo a 1000sf deck in good spirits, I guess if I had to redo 50sf of table/bench tops it shouldn't be a problem. The original stain looks very solid, yet I think in the video you say you used transparent or semi-transparent. How is it holding up since the "fix".
Well….we were all geeked to get started….moved all the furniture off the deck….and then….it was almost like we could hear the JAWS music playing….upon closer inspection….a good number of our boards are mushy and rotting….just along the edges of the entire deck….so instead of putting lipstick on a pig…we have to replace the deck…We are going to use composite boards. Thanks for the best video though. It really gave us confidence that we could have done it ourselves.
I went with this product on my deck and was surprised that it barely worked at all. My deck is 577 square feet and had three coats of paint. Even used as directed it barely cut through the first layer of paint. I had to use the pressure washer to remove what would come up which resulted in me having to sand anyways. Thinking that maybe it was because the paint was too old or thick, I used it on the balusters (which were only stained) and had the same result. Disappointed in this product. Maybe others will have a better result. Keep in mind my house/deck is 27 years old.
Behr products are awful. I just applied stain to my deck, after taking my sweet time to make sure i had prepared to do more than appropriately. The end result is awful. Ridiculous. The stain is already pealing off in some spot. I have even applied a second coat, and it is already pealing. The rest of it, has a chalky appearance. If you rub it with your hand, it appears to get covered with a white powder, if it does not peal at the spot you rubbed. I had heard that it was junk. Now I know for sure. Not sure how to proceed and try to save the project. Neighbor told me to used something else but, without stripping this junk first, I doubt anything will have a happy ending. I will probably have to do it all over again next year, and I am getting old, and don't have anyone to help me. It is hard to do it in the first place. You make an effort, put your best foot forward, read the instruction, do it by the book, and the product sucks. Too bad!
Honestly don’t know how you did this without a mask over your mouth, the chemicals are harsh. Just tried this today and did not work. I had behr stain too. Sucks
Can you post a video update in April or May of 2021 please. I just want to see how horribly the Behr product has peeled on you. That's a really large deck space that I can almost guarantee that product will fail on. Behr stains are one of the worst products I come across with my Deck restoration business. Good luck
@@jamescapone8592 oh thank god. Where I live in southern Ontario Canada, the Behr product for stain are just awful and fail 98% of the time. Solids worse than the oils but both are brutal lol.
Didn’t find this stain remover very effective. Seemed to dry almost the minute it was applied and it was not very warm. Some stain came off but definitely not all. Had to scrub like a maniac too. Disappointed.
10 STARS or $200 worth of the junk stripper ? I stick to the stripper in spray for bikes, if it peels oil paint and primer from a pipe it will do better on a wood piece, try it, cheaper too.
Wish I could say I had good results with this stripper but, I cannot. This was the second stripper I tried on my two-tier deck. It was the worst of the two. Perhaps, it depends on the stain that is to be removed. Mine was Sikkens and the results were pitiful. Looks like I will be sanding the entire deck. It was a waste of time and money.

was it oil based or water based stain? We have oil based stain that I am trying to remove and I am hoping this will work.
Hi Mego, the stain was water based but I used it last week on another section of decking that I’m working on . I had some overlap from a Cabots oil based stain and it took it up quite nicely.
James Capone i just tried it last night when I wrote you this and it actually worked pretty good! Thank you so much!!!
Awesome. Good luck.
Did it kill the grass around the deck?
Hi Mike,
The stripper ran off side of the deck and settled on the area of the lawn where I weed whack close to bottom edge so no real harm to grass.
Hi Rick
Glad you liked it. Hope it helped. Let me know how it works for you .
Was it solid acrylic stain or oil?
Hi David, sorry for the late reply
The stain I took off was Olympic Elite Semi Transparent Semi Solid.
The pressure washer I used was 1650psi.
I made sure not to pressure wash to close to avoid damaging the pressure treated pine.
On the steps I had the same stain but in a solid. That was a bitch to get up.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
James Capone Thanks, James! Great video. I will follow your steps.
@@mr.davidrenner5832 good luck
@@jamescapone8592 I thought you said it was a "Behr Stain". It was Olympic?
My bad. Using the Berh stripper and had a brain fart with the original Olympic stain
"some people in the house don't like the color..." well, those people can come out and change it. I'm sure you checked for their opinion on the color/stain before you completed the entire deck last year....or at least I hope so!
An executive decision gone wrong.....lol
@@jamescapone8592 Oh jeez, hahaha, I found your video because I plan on staining a picnic table, everywhere seems to be recommending deck stain for patio/outdoor furniture....if you can redo a 1000sf deck in good spirits, I guess if I had to redo 50sf of table/bench tops it shouldn't be a problem. The original stain looks very solid, yet I think in the video you say you used transparent or semi-transparent. How is it holding up since the "fix".
Thanks awesome video
Thank you Linda,

Well….we were all geeked to get started….moved all the furniture off the deck….and then….it was almost like we could hear the JAWS music playing….upon closer inspection….a good number of our boards are mushy and rotting….just along the edges of the entire deck….so instead of putting lipstick on a pig…we have to replace the deck…We are going to use composite boards. Thanks for the best video though. It really gave us confidence that we could have done it ourselves.
Smart move. The Jaws reference made me laugh.
Good luck
Too bad!
What does one even do with such an obscenely large deck?! lol anyway great job man.
Why not just re stain with a different color
Wasn’t too keen on staining on top of stain .
Solid stain didn't come off that easy for me using the same product.
Hi Mike,
I mentioned in the video that a solid stain would not be easy to get up. I had a solid on the step and I struggled getting it up
Honestly don’t know how you did this without a mask over your mouth, the chemicals are harsh. Just tried this today and did not work. I had behr stain too. Sucks
Nice deck
Thank you
❤
How come the wife isnt the one re-doing it ?
Can you post a video update in April or May of 2021 please. I just want to see how horribly the Behr product has peeled on you. That's a really large deck space that I can almost guarantee that product will fail on.
Behr stains are one of the worst products I come across with my Deck restoration business.
Good luck
Hi Craig, I used the Behr products to strip and clean the deck. I decided to go with the Cabots Australian Timber Oil for the stain.
@@jamescapone8592 oh thank god. Where I live in southern Ontario Canada, the Behr product for stain are just awful and fail 98% of the time. Solids worse than the oils but both are brutal lol.
If they dont like the colour.... let them repaint it
Didn’t find this stain remover very effective.
Be careful. This product doesn't work with pine treated wood.
Stripper recommended does not work. The product should be pulled from home depot. Try a joke
Was your deck stain semi transparent or solid?
Yea, the initial color was ugly
I liked it but I can see how some might not . Switched to Cabots Australian Timber Oil in Jarra.
shitty power wash lol
This new Behr hybrid garbage is absolutely horrible. It starts pedaling in 2-3 years tops.
WHAT EVER YOU DO DONT USE CABITS NOW THIS IS TRASH
