From personal experience I wouldn't take BEHR deckover if they were giving it away for free. Two years later it is peeling. When the paint comes up the wood underneath is wet. We followed all the directions perfectly.
Same here. It started peeling after a year and looks like trash now. I am currently scraping it off by hand and it is coming off in big sheets...with wet wood under it. I would use a belt sander to get it off but I am afraid that this crap would just melt into the wood.
My deck and pergola were brand new with treated lumber, 2.5 years ago. After letting the raw wood weather for 4 months, I treated it all with Behr waterproofing semi-transparent stain and sealer. It looked very nice immediately after the application but it rapidly began looking really bad. Not pealing but the hot south Texas sun cooked it for 2 summers and it was starting to show black spots through the stain. I decided to redo the pergola posts and the floor surface of the deck with Behr Deck over and wanted it to be medium texture. I first used the Behr All in One Wood Cleaner No. 63. Wet the surface down with water, mixed cleaner half and half with water and coated the posts and the surface. I then took a rigid brush and scrubbed it all and then rinsing with water. Afterwards, to speed up the drying process, I broke out my leaf blower and blew off the excess water and allowed to dry for 24 hours. The deck appeared ready to coat but the black stains remained. The next day I purchased a 5 gallon bucket of textured Deck Over, came home, and went to work. In order to achieve the textured finish, I used a 1/2" nap roller. I poured the product from the bucket into a disposable roller pan. I went to work. It was a bright sunny day, about 72 degrees and i applied it on thick. Small areas and then reload the roller. Once the first coat was complete, I waited the required 6 hours and then applied the 2nd coat later in the evening. The application was MUCH better without the direct sunlight. A cloudy day would have been better. However, the finished product looks fantastic. I just hope that 5 years from now it will look just as great. Also, just the right amount of texture to keep it from being slippery. I'm glad the virus was keeping me home. I never would have had the time otherwise.
i found the best luck to leave the paint stripper on between 1:15-1:30. anything less than an hour only kind of helped. but after an hour and 15 or so, it comes off as easy as loose dirt. Also, APPLY IT LIBERALLY! If you don't see the milkiness of the product after you apply it, you need more. Lastly, use a 2,500 PSI or greater power washer. I was using a 1,600 PSI electric one, got frustrated and then switched to a gas operated 3,000 PSI power washer and NEVER looked back. I hope this helps someone out there!
Thanks Matt. I actually read that you should not use a power washer at all bc the water will moisten the boards to the point that when you put on the product you can trap the moisture... but I guess if you will have like a week of dry weather and let it fully dry that too can be an option.
Thanks Buddy, It's very informative and helpful video. I bought both the stripper (64) and the cleaner (63), and you have helped me to decide not to use them. thank you
Great review and I respect the honesty especially when you admitted you didn’t wear gloves with the prep stripper. Good for you telling the viewers to definitely wear gloves. The deck looks great by the way.👍
Super agree about the stripper part - DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY, TIME AND ENERGY ON IT. Simply use soap water and bleach and clean and paint over old deckover paint.
I agree with you totally on the finish stripper. I wasted whole yesterday on my 400 sq ft. deck using this product and now I am using pressure washer to get rid of the paint inch by inch. Not worth it.
Followed the instructions, it peels! Did my two decks and cabin deck, big mistake!! Beer makes great products, but struck out on this product. Run from Deckover stain!
Behr Solid color stain is thick like paint. Remember you are staining and not painting. Most people do not realize it, but wood needs to breath. When you stain with Behr solid color with 2 or more coats you are completely filling all of the pores. Think of breathing as: If you eat to much your stomcah hurts and sometimes you even have to throw up. (Wood expands in the summer and contracts in the winter) The water that wood takes on, needs to escape and when you have fully covered the wood and water cannot escape the stain will not allow it to leave. Stain will peel so water can escape (IE throwing up). I use Behr solid color stain and I only use 1 coat max. DO NOT ROLL IT ON. DO NOT USE RAGS AND WIPE IT ON. DO NOT USE A SPONGE - all of these will put to much stain. 100% USE A BRUSH ONLY AND STAIN MAYBE 1 TO FEET AT A TIME.
Thanks for this video we talked to BEHR because our deck had spot that looked like milk after the Deck Over dried they sent a replacment to apply after looking at pictures. Now several years later the Deck over is pelling in the spots we had problems with. Called Behr they have my problem on file so they sent me what I need to clean deck recoat deck, We have to go to HD and get stripper send them proof and they will send us refund. The stripper has been on 1.5 hr going to try. Again thanks
Thanks for that info! What a pain.. I would definitely only use the deckover now if I were trying to get more life out of my already existing deck.. anyone making a new deck or re-doing their deck I would suggest a composite material
Behr Stripper was terrible for my experience and a total fail .... tried very hard to avoid sanding my deck but in the end it was the only right way to get the job done properly
I was overseas for temporary assignment, when my wife painted our deck using this paint 7 years ago. I do not know if she did preppig the Now, it needed repainting because the paint peeled off in some area. .Our home is in Houston, Texas.
It is *OK*.. chipping in a small few areas (just like 2-3) where I had to touch up. The biggest thing I am battling right now is this white haze. I do discuss this in my follow-up video (check that out when you get a moment) but, the haze has spread even since that video. My only thought on what that is, is perhaps the soap substance that I used to remove the old deckover was not completely washed off and that is bleeding through.. but the deckover is pretty thick and that should not be happening.. so I am really not sure. Overall the product is still doing its job. If I were to go over it with a stain of the same color (as I have in one or 2 small areas) it looks as good as new. With that said, if you have the funds to do composite decking I would recommend to do that instead.
I wish you well. From the looks of your deck some of the wood...at least on the railings...is splitting already, so it's probably a temporary "fix" at best. I call it "polishing a turd". Mine peeled after two years. In all fairness, my deck gets full sun exposure (I'm in NJ too) and is close to 30 years old. I just need to bite the bullet on a new deck, but I'll either go composite ($$$) or use an oil-based stain on pressure treated lumber going forward.
I used 30 Second Outdoor Cleaner and used my pressure washer to rinse it off. I tried the Behr stripper first and I found it to be useless and a waste of time and energy. I only had to stain the rails and spindles, the decking is TREX.
Great video!!! Hearing so much bad press on DeckOver glad to find your video with some positive outcome. My husband about 2 years ago applied the DeckOver Bourdeaux color on our deck and now I see some inconsistency in the color. I was thinking of either changing the color to a dark grey Flat Top DeckOver or recoating it again with the same Bourdeaux color. I see Behr recommends using their wood cleaner first before recoating. I could try your Dawn solution. My question is do I have to strip/sand the deck before I recoat? If I change the color or keep the same color? Really don't want to do all that work. I have no peeling at all. Just the fading and discoloring that I want to fix or the possibility to change out to a new color. Any suggestions/insight is greatly welcome!
Emilia Pfeffer thanks!! I asked the guys at the Home Depot a similar question as I was not able to get all of the previous deckover up. Basically they said get up everything that you can but don’t worry if you can’t completely strip it. As long as you are using a color as dark or darker than your current you should be fine. My opinion is since it is so think of you put 2 coats on you should be fine. Good luck!
Did you apply the new Deck Over to areas that still had the existing stain/deck over? It didn't appear that your deck was fully cleaned/cleared. I have a lot of stubborn areas and I'm wondering if I really need to put the time into taking the old paint/stain off? I appreciate your help. The deck needs to be re-stained this year, otherwise I'm going to have to rip it down and replace the whole deck.
I was using the same shade so whatever I could not strip I just went over.. My wife and I spent an entire day trying to strip the deck and I will tell you it was very very difficult. So, I went to Home Depot and spoke to the paint pro's.. they said as long as it was not peeling up I would be OK to just go over it. If I had to do it again, honestly I probably would have replaced all of the boards. With that said, I think it was so hard to strip because it had DeckOver on it.. so credit to Behr there I guess.
Is it worth it? Thanks for the FYI. We used Restolium Restore 10X a few years ago and applied it the same way you described for the same reasons, but had to reapply it 1 year after, and “need” to do it again this year because it’s chipping AGAIN. Restolium doesn’t even make Restore anymore, they now have a “20X” that they rebranded for good reason (bcs Restore is garbage.) This time around we’ll try this DeckOver paint. Next year we’ll bite the bullet and put in Composite decking if this one fails like Restolium’s. Thanks again for sharing your experience big guy👍🏽
Hey man, fellow NJ guy here thinking of using the Behr deck over product on my porch in a couple weeks. Thanks to you & the wife for making this video - really informative and helpful. I was thinking of sanding my porch to gets rid of any old flakes before using the paint instead of the stripper they recommend. Did you consider that? I'm thinking on using the light textured version vs.the smooth or full textured version. How has the paint held up in the last 2 months?
John H. Seiler thanks! We thought of sanding but the Home Depot expert said the just use the stripper. We decided not to sand because not only the incredible mess it would have made but I didn’t want to over sand one area by accident and then create an un-level top.
It is VERY hard to do. We used the Behr stripper but it did not work well at all.. and I do not recommend. We ended up just using a solution of dish soap and water (it worked at least as well as the Behr stripper did) but that too did not get a ton off.. It was a lot of elbow grease of scrubbing and scraping and at the end of the day we got maybe 40% off.. Because we were painting it the same color it was before we decided to just go over the rest that we could not get up.
Does the runoff stain? I am going to try and use the stripper on a covered patio but im fearful of the runoff. Will it stain a porous concrete pool deck? or decreative rocks?
Honestly I cannot say as I did not have that experience. Under my deck is just fire wood. There was clear white residue on the joists that support my deck. I would imagine you can get that off with washing but I have no idea of the impact on concrete or stone.
Here you go ruclips.net/video/9yljbplam2U/видео.html This was 13-14 months later.. I recorded this last year.. I MAY do a 2 year follow-up this year but to be honest it really hasn't changed much since my last year follow-up.
If I understand, solid stains (like the ugly one on your deck) don't remove easily. Semi solid or transparent stains come off a lot easier, which I think is what you saw on the side of the deck where the removal product dissolved the stain. It may or may not have been a fault of the product therefore, though I can't be sure. I'm looking at a similar problem on a smaller scale with my rear porch. Anyhow, yeah, not sure how to proceed. The research continues. Thanks for the video.
I am thinking about doing a video at the one year mark (just a couple of weeks).. but in all honesty I don't think one year is enough time to really test the product as it is supposed to last 10 years. With that said I will tell you I am generally still happy with the product.
I used Deckover too. It has been very bad. Not only does it pill off, but it doesn't pill off all together, so you have to take it out little by little in many years before I can repaint the deck! It is so horrible! Never Never Never Never buy it!!!
I had the same experience. Part of it just peels right off but half of it is firmly attached. Been using a putty knife but it’s going to take forever to get it all off. I Will never use the junk again.
Behr Deck Stripper really does not work at all. I have wasted hundreds of dollar in an attempt to avoid sanding every board using a belt sander. I had to use my pressure washer to get stain off and sand damaged wood. Home Depot should disconline this product as it is crap.
Others have said that you can do that. I have heard from some that you shouldn't because when you power wash you shoot water deep into the wood and then when you apply the deckover you are essentially sealing that water in.. With that said, if you are in AZ and it isn't going to rain for like a week, I think you can get away with power washing and letting it completely dry for like a week.. If so, you will have a much easier time than I did!
Please don’t use this stuff followed all instruction to the T. Lasted longer then some other user said but it started peeling and it’s awful. Unfortunately didn’t hear about the lawsuit in time. Started seeing issues little over a year by 2 to 3 crap. Please do not use this stuff trust me mine looked as good as yours.
I am about one year in and so far it still looks good. That said I believe it is supposed to last 10 years. I am doubtful it will live up to that length.
Ours looked good for a year then turned to a flaking mess. Fully sanded the while thing and starting from scratch. At least stain you can reapply when it starts to wear.
Wait 2-years or less, you’ll wish you never did this. You can prep exactly how they say, It will absolutely destroy a perfectly good deck within 2-years of any weather climate.
It has been 2 years for me.. its about the same as it was after one year.. there is definitely some wear and tear but I would say that it will hold up for 5 years or so.. at that point I will strongly consider going all Trex
Saw your other comments. I do disagree with the Home Depot guy. It’s a must to sand along with a stripper along the way, then pressure spray with a solvent cleaner, and then seal, then FINALLY you paint. And I prefer to use a sprayer, back brushing/rolling along the way.
@@cole141000 I was told (and saw in other videos online) that you should not use a pressure washer because it puts too much moisture deep into the wood and then you end up sealing that moisture in which compromises the wood.
Deck over is garbage! If you want to do it right? Clean deck , prime and apply 2 coats of deck floor and patio paint! That simple! Much sweat equity but you'll be good for 7-10 yrs!
This stugf is horrible do not use it!!!!! I had it all pral.first time only lasted 2 yrs orrible peal I'm ng they s we not Mr more of everything to redo on it it ju see t be as an bad we with to he new and improved version save yaself a lot disappointment don't use it !!!

I have the same issue. The stain remover doesn’t work, either. I’m having to scrape off what I can, then sand the deck. A time-saver, it is not.

It will not.
Same here. Getting it off is really time consuming. Stay away from this crappy paint.
We are getting our deck done in the next week, so I watched very closely.
Thank you for watching!!
Many comments and other reviews of this Behr Deckover.... it's junk; I'm staying away from this product. Thanks for the review and other comments.

Can the moisture not escape from the bottom of the board? I didn’t paint the bottoms.

Basically they said get up everything that you can but don’t worry if you can’t completely strip it. As long as you are using a color as dark or darker than your current you should be fine.

Thanks for this video! Was very helpful! Also did you not go to Caldwell college?
Haha, yes I did go to Caldwell
And thank you!!
do you even lift bro?.
Thanks for the video! Are you still happy with the product 1 year later?
So far yes, I may do a followup video this year. That said I think 1 year is too short of a test for this product.
Is it worth it? Thanks for the FYI. We used Restolium Restore 10X a few years ago and applied it the same way you described for the same reasons, but had to reapply it 1 year after, and “need” to do it again this year because it’s chipping AGAIN. Restolium doesn’t even make Restore anymore, they now have a “20X” that they rebranded for good reason (bcs Restore is garbage.)

I just posted a follow-up ruclips.net/video/9yljbplam2U/видео.html
Hey man, fellow NJ guy here thinking of using the Behr deck over product on my porch in a couple weeks. Thanks to you & the wife for making this video - really informative and helpful. John H. Seiler thanks!
We thought of sanding but the Home Depot expert said the just use the stripper. We decided not to sand because not only the incredible mess it would have made but I didn’t want to over sand one area by accident and then create an un-level top.
What actual product did you use to strip the deceiver stain removed. We are struggling with getting it removed.
It is VERY hard to do. We used the Behr stripper but it did not work well at all.. and I do not recommend. We ended up just using a solution of dish soap and water (it worked at least as well as the Behr stripper did) but that too did not get a ton off..
Is it worth it? Cool. Thanks for replying!
Dude, try to do everything the same but use a 2400 PSI power washer vice regular hose.
Thanks Rob, I will keep that in mind for next time
Can you follow up and let us know how this lasted a year later?
Here you go ruclips.net/video/9yljbplam2U/видео.html
This was 13-14 months later..
I recorded this last year.. I MAY do a 2 year follow-up this year but to be honest it really hasn't changed much since my last year follow-up.
How did you apply the product where your home siding and deck abut?
Haha as carefully as possible.. and unfortunately I did get some on the siding.. Just wipe off with a wet paper towel as soon as possible
Bottom line is nothing really holds up on the floor of a deck. Most products are environmentally friendly now and don’t hold up.
When did the previous owner apply the deckover ?
I have no idea.. I did however just post a one year (14 or so months really) follow-up ruclips.net/video/9yljbplam2U/видео.html
Who's using deck over in 2020?
Unfortunately we just did, put one coat down and then found out about the class action lawsuit against Behr with that stuff.
Deck Over is a great product hands down......Awesome
What color did you use?
The color I used is "valise"
Can you give us an update?
I am thinking about doing a video at the one year mark (just a couple of weeks).. but in all honesty I don't think one year is enough time to really test the product as it is supposed to last 10 years.
With that said I will tell you I am generally still happy with the product.
After one year, does it still look as good as it did on day 1?
Follow-up posted ruclips.net/video/9yljbplam2U/видео.html

My deck is painted. Can I just power wash it and when it dries, apply the deck over? I am in AZ and the deck has a western sun exposure.
DON'T DO IT. DON'T DO IT. DON'T DO IT. Worst decision EVER!!!
I see zero prep..spray on and hose off dosent work..rent a floor sander for 80$ and do it right
I did the prep before the video
Great review. But shouldnt some 60 grit with an orbital sander do the job? Along with a stripper.
Is it worth it?
Yeah. Just gotta let it dry. Other than that, it’s the proper thing to do.
Deck over is garbage! If you want to do it right? Clean deck , prime and apply 2 coats of deck floor and patio paint! That simple! Much sweat equity but you'll be good for 7-10 yrs!
What do you mean by deck floor?
@@Isitworthitreviews sorry, meant porch floor and patio
