The 10 Darkest Creatures in Harry Potter (RANKED)

- Опубликовано: 8 июл 2024
- Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the creatures of the magical world. However- we’re not just going to be looking at any old creatures-we’re going to be honing in on the darkest, foulest creatures to inhabit the wizarding world. Fortunately, for every dark creature there seems to be a healthy number of friendly counterparts-but that certainly doesn’t mean that the magical world is devoid of evil. You guys seem to really enjoy these ranking videos but just remember that this is PURELY my opinion and I implore you all to comment your own lists down below. Without further ado, please enjoy the 10 DARKEST creatures in the wizarding world.
10. Basilisks
If you’ve seen/read The Chamber of Secrets then you’ll know what Basilisks are- enormous serpentine creatures that were originally created by a dark wizard by the name of Herpo the Foul.
"Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam our land, there is none more curious or more deadly than the Basilisk, known also as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may reach gigantic size, and live many hundreds of years, is born from a chicken's egg, hatched beneath a toad. Its methods of killing are most wondrous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders flee before the Basilisk, for it is their mortal enemy, and the Basilisk flees only from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal to it."
Basilisks are gigantic, powerful and immune to a lot of magic. Not only that, but they possess giant fangs, protective scales, and a gaze that can kill you instantly.
9. Hags
Hags are essentially warty, evil looking witches- and witches are often confused with hags in muggle literature. The appearance of a hag is what one might imagine when trying to consider the appearance of a witch- but for those who know of the magical world- they know that witches can actually be very beautiful. It’s also worth mentioning that the level of magic that hags possess is less than that of a normal witch. We first hear of the term ‘hag’ in the Philosopher’s Stone when Hagrid mentions that Quirinus Quirrell had a run-in with one.
"They say [Quirrell] met vampires in the black forest, and there was a nasty bit o' trouble with a hag."
According to Quentin Trimble, author of ‘The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection’, hags can be defined as follows:
"The hag is a child-eating creature of human appearance, though likely to have more warts than the average witch."
In addition to being strikingly ugly and possessing only four toes on each foot, the hag is doubly scary because it just so happens to have a taste for human flesh- specifically the flesh of children. Hags made it on to this list not because they are particularly powerful, but because there really isn’t anything ‘pure’ about them. Their entire life is devoted to eating children- and they purportedly even advertise themselves as ‘babysitters’- creepy.
8. Bashees
I know that when I see or hear ‘Banshee’ I think of Gilderoy Lockhart- the catalyst for this of course being his made up stories surrounding his besting of various powerful magical creatures. Lockhart’s book ‘Break with a Banshee’ outlines his defeat of the ‘Bandon Banshee’ a powerful Banshee that terrorized the wizarding world.
"I didn't get rid of the Bandon Banshee by smiling at her." - Lockhart famously stated.
We know now that Lockhart’s tale was fabricated- taking credit for the accomplishment of another witch. But in truth- Banshee’s do exist- and they are very dangerous dark creatures. Banshees are dark, malevolent spirits native to Scotland and Ireland that assume the form of skeletal-looking women with green skin and black hair. Banshees are particularly dangerous as they are able to produce a high-pitched scream that can prove fatal to the ears. Like hags- their existence is entirely wicked- and there isn’t a good bone that exists in their bodies. The best defence against a banshee is a simple laughing potion.

I liked the thumbnail as much as the video. This is some awesome stuff!
You should make a harry potter series audiobook. I bet lots of people would buy it.
You forgot one creature: Dolores Umbridge
Blasphemy
He did a hag
Yah
😂😂😂 true
Lol true
I love when Harry Potter theory reads text from the books he always sounds like he's reading from some sacred religious text. It's beautiful.
Exactly
same
You know it’s gonna be gruesome when 10th is basilisk
Yep ikr
Dragons am I joke to you
@@jugaadsingh5601 Dragons are dangerous but not dark in nature
Literally had the exact thought
That doesn't mean that the Basilisk is weaker.
Imagine a giant serpent, who can kill just by staring into it's eyes, is afraid of a roosters crow
I completely understand. Roosters are annoying.
It's a play on another mythological beast known as a cockatrice. It has similar powers and was said to prey on snakes, lizards and people. Basically a giant rooster with some lizard features that could also petrify and kill with its gaze.
06:15 : "No one knows what a boggart looks like by itself, because it will transform as soon as you encounter it".
Actually, someone DID know. Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody uses his magical eye when at Grimmauld Place, to confirms to Molly Weasley that it is indeed a Boggart that lurks in a cabinet. So Mad-Eye could see untransformed boggarts.
Unless of course they simply know when they are observed, and take on the form in question automatically, and whatever scares Moody was so unlikely to have been in there unless it was in fact a Boggart, he could reasonably conclude that that was what it was instead of his fear.
ah ha! but what if your greatest fear is a boggart?
Boggartceptoion.
@@ronaldolson6553 wtf could scare mad eye lol
@@LukeWigginsMusic Not much, lol, though I'm willing to bet his trunk has traumatized him, given he spent nine months locked in it, he's just badass enough that he still uses something that useful despite that.
A Boggarts true form, when no one is observing it, is speculated to be just a black blob of darkness
Hogwarts school closes when the 10th most darkest creature petrified people.
Hogwarts school allows to put the darkest creatures at the entrances and doesn't close even when it nearly sucked the soul out of Harry.
Well you need a permission to go to hogsmade but not to volunteer to a tournament were your life is in danger.
well he is talking about DARKEST creatures not deadliest
Well to be fair Cornileus aka THE WORST insisted they stay the even though harry's friggin BOGGART was a dementoe
they actually didn't allow this as it was a decision from the ministry of magic to do so. doesn't make it any less stupid since they let the Dementors prance around the Quiditch field.
To be fair, if I recall correctly, the dementors were actually looking for a particular person. They weren't supposed to be attacking any of the students. Harry just manages to attract them more than anyone else. Basilisks on the other hand, are far too dangerous to ignore. They can't be reasoned with, and they can kill you by just looking at you. You could literally die, before you even realize it's there. Not to mention, the only person with a chance at controlling it, Harry, didn't find out it was a basilisk until the end of the book.
I'm watching this while waiting in line for Hagrid's magical motorbike adventure.
How good was it Haven’t gone on it yet
Lucky!!
i searched it up... WHAT IS THAT MAN xDDDD THATS THE .... I CANT EVEN DESCRIBE IT XDDDD
I love the mythology behind Medusa and how history has twisted it. Some original texts imply that Medusa was actually forced to have sex with Poseidon against her will in act so violent that it deeply scarred her. Medusa was always considered an exceptionally beautiful mortal so Athena, in an act of mercy, gave Medusa her more traditional appearance and the ability to turn men into stone as a way of protecting her from the forced advances of other men, plus a way to avenge her own assault. In ancient Greek times they would even have emblems of Medusa's face attached above the doors of women's refuge houses as a sign that it was a safe space to be protected from violent and sexually abusive men. For thousands of years she has been depicted as a monster, when in fact she truly was one of the biggest victims in all Greek mythology. She's one of my absolute favourites.
So, there might be pre-greek texts that put medusa in a better light, but greek culture was VERY anti-woman in nature. so many greek versions of myths and legend from older tribes are made to make women the villain, evil, or horribly tragic and have to be saved by men.
The Gods and goddess could be just as evil.
That's kinda sad...
This is fascinating. Do you have a source?
@@scientistsalarian2661 not a specific one I'm afraid. I've read loads about Greek mythology, and variations of the story are always a little different but this is the one I've seen most of. Many paint Athena in a very different light. I'm fairly certain the women's refuge part is historically true though. The name Medusa apparently translates to guardian/protectress. Again, much of Greek mythology has multiple origins but this is the one I love and is the inspiration for my next tattoo.
Mad Eye Moody knows what Bogarts look like because of his eye.
omgg ur right
wow... that's actually would be true
You just blew my mind!
Truuuuuuu
Another way to find out what they actually look like is for someone who is truly fearless to face one.
When you have honorable mention to achromanchulas:
Me: “seriously misunderstood creatures, spiders”
Well, I'm pretty sure that if you're taking a nice walk in the country and just happen to get close to a Whomping Willow you just might want it somewhere on this list.
true womping willow is dangerous- but ngl i think ik what else to out on the list a freakin dragon- i mean the wizarding world despies them talking of that pls make a vid about why dragons are so despised and they're history.
I think it's because they aren't necessarily evil, just dangerous, there's a reason basilisk is on the bottom despite arguably being the most powerful, except maybe for an obscurus.
Video idea - what happened to Hogwarts after the battle? When was it rebuilt? How was it rebuilt? Who rebuilt it? What happened to the students in school at the time?
Rebuilt (not mentioned by who).
Students were taught. Hermione did her final year again and anyone in Dumbledores Army were allowed to become Aurors. Harry and Ron took that route.
I wonder what kind of zombies they have in the Harry Potter universe; The Walking Dead slow type, or the sprinting World War Z version. . . I hope they're the slow ones, haha
I guess the Inferi are also dead bodies bewitched, don't know if they’re slow though.
INFERI : Am I a joke to you???
Isn't voldermort essentially a zombie tho
@@adurbanexplorationnorthern907 He's pretty much a Lich, so yeah, you're right
So you're telling me all they had to do was being a rooster into the chamber of secrets
Just about yeah
That's why Hagrid's roosters were killed early on.
Yup, thats why Hagrid's roosters were being killed off.
Ginny, under Voldy's control, killed them all before they went to the CoS
I KNEW IT, my mother in law is a Hag !!!
Haha good one

Just wanted to say how much I LOVE your channel. I love all of your options on the Harry Potter theory’s and ideas. Thank you for making videos!!!
6:37 Well no wonder Lupin kept jumping in front of Harry every time the boggart turned into a dementor! It could have actually hurt him. I’ve thought it was so weird all this time.
He also at first thought it was going to be Voldemort. For obvious reasons Lupin wasn't gonna have that.
The Fantastic Beasts series must include these creatures somewhere in their movies. Loved the video.
Love seeing the notification of a new video! Always makes me smile!
I don’t know if you have done a video on this, but could you make a video explaining WHY Snape was in Slytherin and not griffindor when he was “the bravest man i ever knew” ???
That’s just Harry’s opinion
Because he was incredibly cunning and skilled
That's coz Snape valued Ambition more than Bravery
For a half-second I thought this said “dankest”. Actually, you know what? I want that video now.
Lol now I want to see it too
Chocolate frogs
The basilisk was created by evil wizard.
The considerate we've never seen what one wants to do when not being controlled by an evil person maybe they're not evil creatures they just never had a chance to be themselves.
Maybe a basilisk would rather be living in a cave oR in the woods and left alone
I love how you used a picture of the banshee from supernatural for this video. Awesome!
Is it just me, or does anyone else love when he reads excerpts from the books?
Love the video, keep up the good work👍👍
Great videos! Thanks! I'd like to throw my hat in for the werewolf a bit more. Not only do they create destruction and death in their werewolf form, the pain and misery is also inflicted on the human form. As with Lupin, whose life was really ruined by his stigma, as well as with Greyback, who took no respite from his bloodlust.
I think a dementor is stalking me for the last 2 years... nice video as always!
Amazing video idea!
Well done list. Fantastic Beast And Where To Fine Them has been recorded in an audio book format, narrated by Eddy Redmain, if I got the name right.
What if somebody uses Fiendfyre against a Dementor?
Would it be angry?
Would the wizard loose control and get shallowed by flames?
Would it get damaged and retreat?
Or multiply?
~Just wondering
@@denizkenger52 They like it cold and dark, the same climate as Inferi who can be taken care of trough fire. So if somebody would use fire against a Dementor, it must take at least some form of damage right? Even if it can’t die.
Like you blast it’s Head off and you end up with two Dementors or something like that.
Could you imagine if monsters from the witcher games were in the harry potter universe?
Katakans, Ekimaras, leshens, ect.... would make the forbidden forest much more dangerous
Interesting how these Basilisks are much more serpentine than I’m used to. I mean in all the Final Fantasy games etc I played, the Basilisks have four limbs!
Thanks for all the videos!
Ok, so you’re telling me that if Dumbledore put roosters all around Hogwarts everyone would be safe?
LOL!,
I mean theey didnt really know what the monster in the chamber actually would be as far as i know, so that wouldnt make sense at all xD
(but kinda funny to think about it)
Didn't Ginny go on a rooster-cide for a bit in the novel?
The Augurey might also live in the creepy shop of Borgin & Burkes anyway loved the video and the thumbnail is outstanding
Dude, youre videos are incredible. Someone get this man am Oscar or something!!!
Interesting video. Could you next do a video on the 10 nicest creatures in the magical world?
I was attached by the little creature you speak of as a child...while in my bed..I couldn't move..and it set on my chest swinging it's arms at it's face as if it was going to eat me but never did..just scared the ish out of me...in real life on earth at home
Thanks for this video man
Good list!
Ive been listening to this not even realizing this was mythology explained XD I was like... why do I enjoy this guys voice so much
A thing to keep in mind about banshees is that they aren't inherently evil or even dark. In traditional Irish folklore they're actually a type of faerie that's bound to a noble house and acts as a protector of the house as well as mourner/caller for a death within the house itself.
Hmmm I am not sure it really counts, as we heard of this creature only once, but when a dark wizard try to conjure the Patronus charm, some kind of a maggot appears, and I find it pretty dark, maybe even more than Dementors
Quite a lot of them are undead... So... Maybe you could make a video about necromancy next time and it's role in HP universe ?
Theres no necromancy in harry potter
@@royalecrafts6252 Voldemort literally had to reanimate people he killed to put them as a security measure in the cave lol. That is the exact definition of necromancy.
Long time no see 🤩
Very cool list! Although it's strange to not have vampires on the list but still a good vid!
I have always wondered: in Grimmauld Place Moody's eye once looked through floors, walls and into a wardrobe, to confirm that what was hidden in the latter was indeed a Boggart. As the Boggart did not know it was being watched (it was minding its business in the wardrobe, not facing anyone), would it not have its original form? I think JK Rowling missed a rare (if not the only) chance in the entire book series to tell us what a Boggart actually looks like when it is alone.
I believe it's the only time. And yeah, she did.
It depends. Some Tales, creatures or characters loose their power and meaningfullness, if you uncover their mystery. Someone like Yoda, does not need a backstory. To a certain extent the same goes for Dumbledore in my view. It's what people project in the empty space, through hints, rumours, discourse and interesting tales surrounding those characters, what makes them so exciting! There is no definite, no wrong or right.
Same goes for the ending of Harry Potter. A definite answer to the question wether Harry's last encounter with Dumbledore was just fictional or actually real, takes away from the power of that story.
Oh and wouldn't Star Wars' Jawas become boring, once we know what they look like under that hood?
Oh, but I like to think that Moody knows how they look like. Never thought about that! Nice theory indeed :-)
Nice Video!
So what happens if your greatest fear is either fear itself or a Boggert. Does it confuse them enough that they just leave? Do they keep switching forms to try and find something frightning?
I hate to be that guy, but Irish viewer here. Banshees aren't actually dangerous. They simply warn of oncoming death. They do not cause said death. They're a harbinger, not a bringer. Again, sorry, love the content.
Nice vid
Regarding the boggarts, could Moody possibly know how a boggart looks like since he can see through objects? Like at Grimald Place in OotF? Or does he still see his own greatest fear?
THIS GUY ASKING ME TO LIST THE DARK CREATURES MY WAY..
ME, NOT EVEN KNOWING 5 OF THEM.!!😂
I knew all of them.
Werewolf, demontor, obscurus, inferi, basilisk are really scary and powerful creatures in Harry Potter cinematic World.
My list is this: 1 is Dolores Umbridge, 2 is Basilisk, 3 is Acromantula/Giant Spiders, 4 is Dementor, 5 is Hag, 6 is Gorgon, 7 is Zombie, 8 is Boggart, 9 is Inferi, 10 is Lethifold
Honestly find Lethifold the most terrifying. I remember it stood out when I read fantastic beast. If I remember correct (might not) the most terrifying thing was that no one who saw it ever lived to tell the tale. That the only reason we know anything about it was that somebody wrote it in his diary right before he was killed.
Did I just make that up? Or am I correct?
Nah he repelled it with the patronus charm, but it still scared me too
I love these
I might have put banshees a bit lower on the list as their scream can kill you a banshees scream mostly symbolises a warning of your own or someone you loves untimely death but other than that I feel it is extremely accurate to the books and movies and my own opinions.
Video idea: What if you are scared of boggarts
This video was fun to watch
AHH this is the darkest Harry Potter Also thanks for the Sirius vid
Top ten duellists please!
Harry Potter Theory is awesome!!!
Was waiting for Delores Umbridge to show up on list. lol
For a second I was thinking some in this list belong in another spot than mentioned. but then I thought, maybe what makes them darker than most is how they are made. This list makes sense.
Yes, I knew Lethifolds were gonna be one of the Darkest!
Did you guys guess all 10? Comment down below YOUR top 10

Well, although the information and the structure of the video-essay are great, it is my opinion that basilisks should be higher on this list - number 2 for instance.
Number 9: Me.
In all seriousness though, hags and Letherfolds are far scarier to me and would be higher on my list. Also, "hide-behinds" are f*cking terrifying to me, too.
You got some facts wrong, mainly that you stated no one knows what a boggart really looks like, which is not true. In order of the phoenix, the order has one trapped in a drawer in the Black family home, and Mad Eye was able to see through the drawer and saw what the thing actually looked like. Presumably he isn't the first to ever have a magical eye, so we can assume a handful of other people in history have seen one.
So in theory, Harry's Parents could been one of those Inferis? That really dark indeed. Imagine to see the one u love the most tries to kill you. You have no chose but eliminate them.
I don’t think so, mainly because it’s implied that only Voldemort knows the magic behind making them and he was destroyed right after killing Harry’s parents
Once I saw basilisk was the tenth darkest creature I was seriously concerned for the following
Same
Basilisk: big snek
Hag: basically babayaga
Banshee: potentiall lethal screeching
Gorgon: you'll be rock hard (too literally)
Zombie: just a zombie
Boggart: nope
Obscuros: magic pasrasite of negativity
Leithifold: clothes that eat you
Inferi: kinda draugr from skyrim
Dementor: you'd rather die than encounter one
What’s babayaga
@@kelvinsun5099 russian witch that kidnaps and eats kids
@@thorodinson292 scary
I'll go with your list for now I think
I usually fall asleep listening to your playlist. Only to wake up to a dead phone and 15 minutes to dress.
The words Gorgon and medusa, remind me so much of Percy Jackson and heroes of Olympus
Well isn’t Percy Jackson Greek mythology
Is this the only youtuber without haters
Fun fact, Medusa was actually raped in the temple of Athena by Poseidon. Most people see her being transformed was a curse, but others believe it was a form of protection. Protecting her from the gazing eyes of men.
You are both wrong, in *Greek* mythology, she was born that way. But she was the only mortal gorgon unlike her sisters
So if a dementor gave Voldemort the Dementor's Kiss, he would only really lose 1/7 of his soul... so how would that work? Does the dementor become a horcrux? Does it become Voldemort's new physical form? Or does he merely posess the dementor? What would happen?
Actually i think that a dementor could possibly be used to destroy a hocrux, since they can suck the soul out of it, as for voldy possessing them I don't think that's possible, dementors most likely will digest the soul
Could Moody see a Boggart's true form by looking inside the wardrobe with his magical eye?
You should one on the strongest dark creatures.
Video idea: Why didnt Fawkes die when he was battling the basilisk in the Chamber Of Secrets?
Nundu, chimera, cockatrice, dragon, acrumantula, horned serpent, werewolf, quintapod, mantacore, wampus cat, vampire, giant, troll, runespoor, kelpie, erkling, hidebehind, occamy, thestrels, and some wizards.
I always thought the infri were the hp version of the zombie if possible could you please make a whats the difference video
Only thing that could potentially go over dementors is those dang nargals
Very nice video you deserve 100 million subscribers . I liked and subscribed. I hope you reach 1 million subscribers by the end of the year
The grim? Is that not one of the darkest creatures in the magic world of which its mentioned in prisoner of Azkaban when the students were reading tea leaves or the grounds of tea leaves. Also I always wondered why they dont just leave the tea leaves whole then dry them in the sun or roast them or whatever they do to them to get black tea, and when you go make a cup of tea just put a leaf or two in the cup until the desire shade and taste, then pull leaves out? Maybe two fragile which break apart anyways but at least attempt it like they do coffee and have little pods of Expresso tea so to speak if they haven't yet! Probably so and I just haven't seen or heard of it yet if anyone has, so plz let me know?
When the video starts with Basilisk at no 10,you know it's going to be interesting.
My #1 would be Lethifold cause I live in Tropical areas so if in the wizarding world I would have to watch out when I sleep and knowing that something could just creep up on me when I sleep just scares me not to mention it could Kill someone that just make it worse and plus even I have the fear of ghosts in particular and I always tell myself to go to sleep faster so that I don't have to feel the fear taunting me (it doesn't happen a lot these days thank goodness) but in the wizarding world If I were to go to sleep I could be attack by a Lethifold which in the end would just give me more sleeping problems and Nobody wants that
Just list the creatures with danger lvl 5 in the books. Job done.
when you say no-one knows what a boggart looks like your forgetting someone: Mad-Eye Moody because his magical eye can see through were the boggart is hiding because he does it in the order of the phoenix when molly asks hi there is a boggart in the wardrobe.
Hags are also mentioned in the 4th book, page 270.
In the 5th paragraph
I just realized something in the way the book describes the basilisk and its ability to kill. It sounds extremely similar to the killing curse which if we follow that logic means the guy who made them probably made the killing curse after studying his creation or one of his followers and there are only two people in the books who could make them one being Herbert the foul the other being Slytherin. Maybe Slytherin was the creator of the killing curse after his teacher Herbert taught him about basilisks? Just an idea.
Can you do top 5 dark wizards?
Snape's no 4
You forgot but mentioned horcruxes, my reasoning is that they are the opposite of the human being and killing is the way to create one, to pull your soul back you must show true remorse but that could do something inbetween death and the dementors kiss. I would purely say that you should have placed this on the list aswell as some of the unamed things in the forbidden forest.
You forgot about Dolores Umbrage
Oh wait, you said dark creature. She supposed to be a witch although LOL I have my doubts.
Can you do video on basilisk, like do baby basilisk have deadly eyes or does basilisk chose if he kills something that looked at its eyes, like if Tom Riddle watched in basilisk eyes what would happen
Ok heres mine
1. An American Oosari
2. Delorfuck Umbitch
3. Dementor
4. Voldemort
5. Lucius Malfoy
6. Me when I'm mad and near a knife
FULL STOP. That is NOT why Athena punished Medusa. Other than that, great video!!!!!!
You realize that there are MANY different versions of Myth, right? I gave the shortest pg-13 account.
@@HarryPotterTheory Hey man, great video like I said. Every account of the myth I’ve heard and read implicates Poseidon as the catalyst for Athena “punishing” Medusa and sentencing her to exile- not Athena simply being jealous of her priestess and her beauty. I brought it up because myths are a passion. I just found one critique of the way you portrayed the situation. Take the compliment, leave the critique if that is your wish on your channel.
These titles always pull me in lol
