ALL 23 Creatures & 15 Habitats Inside Newt's Suitcase (+How it WORKS) - Harry Potter Explained

- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Newt Scamander, Magical (Fantastic) Beasts, and his trusty suitcase. More specifically- we’re going to be diving in to one very big question: HOW Does Newt Scamander’s Suitcase work? And just HOW BIG are the environments within it? Let’s jump in.
Now- just last week I was rewatching Fantastic Beasts 1 and 2, prepping myself and making sure that I was on top of all of of the details of the prequel films in advance of the release of the THIRD installment- coming April 15- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The films- which I’ve seen just a few times at this point (a stark difference between the number of times I’ve seen the Harry Potter films, probably hundreds there) were more or less just as I had remembered, however- there was one lingering question in the back of my mind: just HOW on earth does NEWt Scamander’s suitcase work? And, more importantly, just HOW many magical creatures are housed within it? Which creatures can be found inside?

Fantastic,vid,I think I too,will re-watch the previous two films.
i was literally daydreaming about this the other day 😩
HOW DID YOU KNOW?!?! I LITERALLY just finished watching this movie! haha and my friend was like wait, why could jacob barely fit down the suitcase but the rhino thing got in there with almost equal struggle?! And its like 4 times his size.
I was mighty impressed when they first go into his suitcase - I was most awe-struck and highly fascinated by this scene - and when I say most, I mean most among all the 10 movies, not just the FB series
I love this video! The magical world and its amazing magical beasts drew me to the Fantastic Beast series, especially the first movie. Now Newt and magical creatures are no longer the focus of the movies. I know the point of the series is find out how Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald fought their final dual but the second movie was very poorly presented and chopped up and half of the movie was left on the cutting room floor. The deleted scenes of FB2 showed the connections of each character to the others there were to many new characters and storylines. Plus the scene where Credence escaped and was reformed from a whisp of smoke was chopped out and we were told that he was alive but never explained how or how he got out of America to Europe and joined the circus. I think that this series is now on life support due to WBs firing of JD and way they handled this mess with Ezra Miller. JD was fired for an accusation not a fact, Ezra Miller has been permitted to continue with this film AND star in the movie Flash as the main character. Ezra has actually accosted at least three people and been arrested for assault but he is still representing this movie and Flash. If anything sinks this movie, it will be this and the way WB themselves handled it.
The thing I love about magical beasts in the wizarding world is they innately use magical abilities that wizards then adapted into widely used spells. I'm sure through Newt's research and published work it actually helps wizards understand those magics on a deeper level, like for example studying the Niffler's pouch led to such a powerful extendable charm that a magical item like Newt's briefcase is possible.
That is an excellent observation :O
The Weasleys tent is like that. Small on the outside and basically a house on the inside
And Hermiones tent in Hallows
Hagrid would have loved Newt's cause to help and preserve these creatures
Its believed that Newt was the one who gave him Aragog.
I think both of them worked together atleast once. Maybe that was a reason why he was in hogwarts in Prisinor of Azkaban
@@TheRadioknight he was probably visiting dumbledore, he does that often
This makes me wonder if just like Newt's suitcase habitat, the entirety of Diagon Alley is actually confined to the walls at the back of the Leaky Cauldron? Diagon Alley itself is huge and looks too big to fit into the rest of London without anyone noticing.
Pocket universe, maybe. I think you're right.
*could be like the S.E.P generator (somebody's else's problem) field used on the Bistromathmatics ship from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy found in Chapter 7 (depending on the printing) of the Douglas Adams novel Life, the Universe and Everything*
.”Bistromathic Recipriversexclusion Estimation”, or BRE is a purposefully impressive bit of jargon designed and used by engineers to bedazzle management and marketing executives. A rough translation into something that would be said at the pub one engineer to another is ”2 pints of napkin math, near enough”*
No, muggles just don’t see anything do they.
@@iudexslade7855 No, but if you jab them with a fork, they feel!

Newt Scamander was an uncommonly powerful wizard - maybe not in the same sense as Voldemort, Dumbledore or even Snape, but to handle magical creatures in the way he did, and to maintain the obvious joy and sense of wonder when dealing with creatures which did not reason as humans, and therefore could not be treated with the same attitude as a human, was absolutely amazing. He was among the best of the magical world.
I credit Newt with helping me see the power in my Hufflepuffness
He is a tier lower then those listed I guess, to put it simply
you say that, but he dealt with and understood Obscurus, he could extract them from people (allbeit the only subject we're told to have that done to them, died).
HE was the one that actually managed to capture "the big bad" at the time.. keep in mind, the big bad had just put on a powerdisplay and casually duelled 1v12+ aurors..
And whilst suffering the cruciatus curse, he still looked to and kept his focus on Credence and talked to him...
He might not have the same powerdisplay of magic (besides from the suitcase.. that suitcase is beyond normal magic capabilities and I look opon it as a harder to achieve piece of art than what it would take to control normal fiend fyre), but the sheer mental fortitude on him.. is top tier.
He certainly deserved a chocolate frog card
As in he deserved the one he did get
Only a true Huffelpuff could creat such a suitcase because this really is an absolut masterpiece of hard work.
...and in addition loyalty and friendship for the magical beasts which live in it in peace.
To create such NUMEROUS HUGE habitats WITH the so many creatures within you’d have to be EXTREMELY powerful.
Another example of the spell is the tent used at both the Quiddich tournament, and by Hermione/Harry/Ron while hunting horcruxes
I really hoped Fantastic Beats was going to be Newt going around essentially "monster hunting" Pokemon style. Think it would of been way more enjoyable personally
More enjoyable than a Dumbledore v Grindelwald war???
@@wyldegi Yeah definitely. That could of been its own spin-off. IMO the series should of focused on Newt and the creation of the book. They could of done a tie in/spin off seperately about Dumbledore. What do you think?
@@benjaminburke4685 I love Newt but honestly I’d prefer the Dumbledore v Grindelwald stuff. You’ll understand after you watch the third movir
I wanted an Ilvermorny series. Ilvermorny movies would be released in odd years and Dumbledore vs Grindelwald/ Fantastic Beasts during even years.
That giant runespoor is scary, as intimidating as the basilisk.
It seems like a ramped up version of the tent in GOF, the tent was actually way bigger on the inside than it looked on the outside.
I thought Hermione's bag was impressive but Newt's suitcase holds a entire universe inside. Loved seeing the African environment for the Erumpant in Where To Find Them and the Chinese environment for the Zowu in Crimes of Grindelwald cannot wait to see what more of the case we see in Secrrets of Dumbledore. The new beasts in the 3rd movie the Qilin, Wyvern and Manticore are gonna be fantastic!
Its not really an entire universe, we can see in the movies that each individual habitat isnt that big but has visual stuff on the walls to make it look bigger than it is. Hard to say exactly how big it is but maybe less than 1km^3
I always thought Newt's suitcase was more like a portal that leads into the interior habitat rather than purely an extension of the suitcase. I like to think it works in a similar to way to how the doors in Monsters Inc do. Like if the suitcase was destroyed, it's 'contents' wouldn't be destroyed with it, only New would lose access to his creatures and would have to find some other way to return to the habitat.
i think that would make more sense if Newt hadn’t built the habitats. since they’re created by him, they would’ve had to be created inside the suitcase. also if the animals were in some separate habit, them being in the suitcase would be pointless. the whole point of them being in the suitcase is so Newt doesn’t lose them. unless Newt had the power to make his own dimension, i don’t think the idea of a “portal” really make sense.
@@camerynr8344 Unless Newt built the habitat somewhere else, maybe itself being in a contained yet expanded space, and the suitcase is just a portkey that takes him there.
@@barbiquearea nah, with the fear of when the suitcase got destroyed as an example... if it was so simple that "the habitats are located somewhere" he could simply travel there..
He loves, he worries and the habitats are clearly only inside the suitcase by how he acts
I think it's charmed similarly to the room of requirement where it can be used to access the habitats that are created by the suitcase to house the beasts. The magic is much deeper than an extension charm imo because of the ecosystems needed.
The Extension Charm is the magical version of Time Lord technology. I have always loved that.
I wonder if Rolling got her idea from Dr. Who.
@@karlbergen6826 I think that's more likely than not.
What that amazing, is your ability to notice things. Great video. And I love how Newt is behaving magical creatures, with respect. Rather they are good or evil creatures, which is amazing and worthy of appreciation.
Hello, love your channel,
I wonder if you could make a video specifically on the Patronus Charm?
I was skimming through through the books(😍) and stumbled upon Miranda Goshawk words on the patronus being ancient magic and mysterious charm that produces a magical guardian and find the wording extremely interesting.
Great video! I’ve always thought of Newt’s case as like a magical TARDIS. If only I could cast the undetectable extension charm (Capacious extremis) on my suitcase that I bring to work.
If the Doctor ( Doctor Who ) was Merlin ( as Who lore suggests ) the dimensional transendentialism has been in Potter lore since Merlin's day -- one man's science is another's magic etc etc
A lot off fanfic authors enjoy combining Harry Potter and Dr. Who.
I came looking in the comments for someone to mention the doctor.
It's bigger on the inside 😂
Also in the Goblet of Fire there was the tent created by the Weasleys, it had a lot of extra space.
I feel like the idea of the most powerful magic being love. Newts ability to use the spell to its fullest extent is his love in his care for magical creatures. The case is as big as his love for each creature. Magic is only as strong as its purest intent. Newt is selfless in his love for all creatures.
good point, perhaps Newt could channel love as a form of magic due to his odd and quirky nature
The extension charm was also in the goblet of fire when the went to the quidditch world cup (the tent) they all occupied
you forgot about the tent from book 4 and used while on the run in 7.
Important to remember…Hermoine was a student and not fully qualified witch, who created her handbag for the necessary trip to search for horcruces. Newt’s case was the creation of a fully qualified wizard who had a definite and calculated need for a habitat for multiple magical beasts. The magic charm needed obviously existed for centuries. Newt fully knew how to use this charm, and Hermoine had rudimentary knowledge of it, but as she was such a prodigious and talented witch, she knew how to use it for her uses.
I dare you to take a shot every time he says the word "habitat"
Im watching this movie for the first time right now, i take a bathroom break, look at my youtube and this is there, how ironic
Fascinating. Newt's suitcase also reminds me of Rincewind's Luggage from Discworld, only without the latter's homicidal tendencies. Hagrid would love that Sapient Pearwood chest. I can just see it following him round the grounds of Hogwarts on its hundreds of little legs and snapping at recalcitrant students.
😂😂😂 he's a nice luggage he doesn't really mean to hurt you he's just excited 😅
Let's not forget the many tents for the Quidditch cup in Goblet of Fire and although minimalist the tents in the Deathly Hallows the friends used. Even the Room of Requirement can be included along these lines.
Most ppl probably don’t agree with me but I like Newt more than Harry as a character
Me too!
I think more people than you’d think agree as well because Newt’s a bit more relatable and his beasts are so cool
Newt is much better....he is alot stronger also
@@israelhm7339 Which is funny because Newt grew up in the Wizarding World whereas Harry was a fish out of water.
I find it funny how it is Ron Weasley saying this.
Random, but I feel like Newt and Hagrid would have been great friends
I think I would be good friends with them too,I also love the misunderstood, and often hated creatures, like insects, reptiles, spiders etc.
I watched the new movie last night. Absolutely stunning. The visuals and the plot were both brilliant aswell as the character development. If highly recommend this movie. The only downside is I can't unsee the new actor for Grindelwald being the Casino Royal villain. Go and watch the movie when you can!
Very informative :D
Wouldn't it be awesome if really skilled animagi could not just transform into normal animals, but turn themself into magic beasts? I always wondered if that'd be possible.
*changing back might be the tricky part*
Animagi is more like a spirit animal as in just one animal you are closest to. Transfiguration in theory could be used. Though would you retain the abilities or just the look?
Great video! But i believe you missed the charm being used on the tents in goblet of fire? Keep up the great work
While watching Fantasic Beasts I had a funny joke theory, that Newt Scalamander was secretly not just a wizard but also a... Time Lord... (lol)
I have watched FB many times and entering the suitcase remains one of my favorite scenes.
@Harry Potter Theory, I wanted to ask you, has it been proved as canon that the charm used on Newt's suitcase is an undetectable extension charm, because if not, I would like to add to your theory that what if the charm was a cross between an undetectable extension charm and the portus charm/spell (used to turn objects into a portkey), I mean if you think about it, some of the properties of this charm are the same as the portus spell/charm, I mean there are completely different habitats, what if there was some way you could connect them together also the fact that how is Newt supposed to have basically all of these habitats, there has to be some way he is doing it.
That was great! :)
3:10 you forgot the tent in the goblet of fire, at the worldcup, the weasleys had camping tents that were bigger on the inside than they appeared to be from the outside! ...basicly those simple tents had the size of medium houses lol
oh and also in secrets of dumbledore, dumbledore has one of his hat's interior affected by that spell, i get why you would forget about that tho, since we can only see him taking things out of that hat once or twice for a few seconds, but definitly the had is holding several footlong +++ items while being shorter than a foot itself
For the examples you gave for the extension charm I couldn't help but notice you didn't include the one on the tent that they used for the quidditch cup.
The Weasley house definitely had an expansion charm not to mention the tents they used
Thank you, great overview! But, the #2, water habitat, was not in his suitcase, it was in his apartment, where Bunty tended to magical creatures in Newt's absence. Also, some creatures were from the apartment, not the suitcase.
Perfect i was just rereading the series!!
you missed the tent used by the Weasley's during their Quiddich World Cup trip. Also the Tardis . Its bigger on the inside
I love the Zouwu. It looked so gorgeous in the movie 😍😍😍
How does his suitcase work? The answer... Magic.
Thanks for joining us for another installment of harry potter theory
You forgot the tents that Mr Weasley borrowed
How is it that all the stuff doesn't fall all over the place when newt moves the suit case. There are a few mentions in harry potter when hermione moves her bag the things inside move as well. More magic?
The things only moved when Hermione touched them, not when she moved her bag
And the two tents we see were also Timelorded (bigger on the inside)
I've got 1 word that explains it perfectly, ' TARDIS ' .
Once " Fantastic Beast" came out, i was like why didn't they use subverting like that for the Quidicth World Cup
What is the name of the background
Music you use in this video?
I like to think that everytime Newt got a new creature, that he would just use the extension charm again to make it bigger, and again when he got another one and so on and so on
There was also the tent at the world cup in GOF and the same tent in Deathly Hallows
Bigger on the inside
Just like Hermione's purse.
harry potter theory i love you
The Wesley tent was also one.
This needs to be updated
As stories like Harry Potter develop more and more fantastic things appear. It is a natural order of things.
New and the magical beasts have to be my favorite characters in all of the series .
Thanks, this is awesome! Although, sorry to ask - in case you mentioned it under another name: which one is the “stalactites or stalagmites” environment? Is it the one you said is a cave (that you showed a creature like a 3-headed red dragon)?
Oh… I just saw that the one creature I mention in my comment is called “Runespur”(?) Sorry, I wrote the comment without finishing the video (hehe)! 😁
The actual informative part of the video starts at 5:29
I've heard about vivariums recently but I don't know much about them, are these habitats within his suitcase vivariums themselves? Or is it something else....
I love Zoolus!
What I hear : Newt's suitcase
The subtitles : Nude suitcase
Suitcase works with Time Lord technology
Cannot wait for the Secrets of Dumbledore. Currently on the Goblet of Fire before watching the prequels
The Augurey, the Leucutra and the Kelpie were at his house not his case.
What about the tent Arthur set up for them at the Cup?
I am from Mauritius Island ♥
Think it would be cool if the suitcase was a mimic, like the chest
like a good tardis in a multidimensional object
Where did newt get his suitcase?
I'm wondering if maybe Newt will be lending out some of his creatures to his comrades in the next movie.
This may be a stupid question but how does the different ministries of magic regulate al these creatures and prevent them killing muggels or non magical animals and breaking the Statute of Secrecy
The kelpie was in his basement, not his suitcase
Ashwinder Eggs if not frozen will heat up to insane temperatures and ignite/burn down anything around them. That's why it was frozen. Not because of a terrain.
This Zouwu can teleport
The floating tree habitat is the habitat for the doxies, actually. Those golden leaves aren't actually leaves at all, those are all doxies.
21. swooping evil was also immune to alot of spells and curses
I think mad eye did it with his trunk didn't he?
Newts briefcase is clearly just a TARDIS
Give me the technology or the magic to create my own pocket universe / TARDIS and I can go anywhere in the world with little worries as to what I should and shouldn't take with me. Imagine, you could place an entire food garden, greenhouse, library, food storage, kitchen, bedroom, office, wardrobe, etc in your suitcase !!!!
Anyone count how many times 'habitat' was said?
THIS EPISODE WAS VERY
INTERESTING I THINK I WOULD
HAVE LIKED TO MEET NEWT
SCAMANDER CAUSE I LOVE
ALL ANIMALS GREAT+SMALL,
I KNOW A LOT BOUT ANIMALS
+USED TO WORK AS AN
ANIMAL KEEPER.
I HATE PEOPLE WHO KILL
ANIMALS FOR NO GOOD
REASON, IN MY OPINION
PEOPLE WHO HURT ANIMALS
DESERVE TO BE HURT BACK.
All I could think of while I was watching this video is how the hell did J. K. Rowling think of all these creatures she’s got a mind boggling mind brilliant
Fanfiction idea: JK Rowling is a Squib writing from personal experience and knowledge.
@@karlbergen6826 I’d love it if that was true
This aged poorly
"Newt was expelled from Hogwarts at the end of his sixth year for endangering human life with a magical creature and disobeying direct orders of the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. According to the text, Newt was expelled due to his possession of a Jarvey, which was both illegal to own and a violation of Animal Welfare Laws 101/3043. Dumbledore, then the Transfiguration Professor, advocated to let him continue his education"
Nobody commenting on the tent in GOF? 😅
I think you are wrong, in Part 2 they enter the place through Newts basement
18 minutes from upload, already now 8 comments. You have a following sir!
✌️
So...... Could you put a suitcase inside the suitcase?
The Erumpet from the movie was definitly obese if their weight is around 1ton :D looked more like 5ton
Absolutely ... I remember when it was at the zoo trying to corner that tiny hippopotamus! Could be 10 tons! 😄
You can’t tell me that no it’s not the most powerful wizard come on look at that fucking suitcase yeah Hermione’s bag held a few things and the angry I was neat and so was the tent. But that is crazy
So it’s a magical tardis
the suitcase is just bigger on the inside
I'm sure this video is great, but isn't the answer to the question, *how does newt's suitcase work", "magic"? 😂
Extension Charm, so yeah. Magic
It’s bigger on the inside.
Hermione’s extension charm on her purse I always thought worked a bit different. I thought it worked like (and was a reference to) the purse in halloweentown! She had it connected to her home back in halloweentown. And could reach into her purse and grab anything she had at home. I thought the “extension” or hermiones purse was the same. It was an extension of another location. So she could pull out anything that she had stashed somewhere else. Whereas newts suitcase seems to be a location of its own. But who knows 🤷🏻♂️
At one point Hermione commented that the books fell over in her bag.
@@primmoore6232 yeah, but if it was an extension of another location, she’s just reaching through, they could still fall over. If anything that just makes it even more likely that they’re located elsewhere. Probably on a shelf somewhere.
@@Nathan35077, the book mentions that Hermione packed & repacked that bag, knowing they might need to make a quick exit. She put things they'd need *in the bag* that was larger on the inside.
@@primmoore6232 that’s a good point. I actually just reached that part in the books! So yeah it’s probably just a larger bag spell. Which, is kinda disappointing. Was hoping it was a reference.
