My favorite part of this song is that the “flute solo” is actually a “recorder” solo. As in the obnoxious instruments everybody learned how to play in elementary school and never played again lol. And not only that but it’s played by the Captain himself. If you can find the music video they show him playing it in that. These live shows aren’t always really performed “live” and I guess they just didn’t have a recorder? Or maybe it was in the shop? 😅 As far as I know it’s the best selling song to ever chart on the Billboard 100 with a Recorder solo in it 😆.
Catherine Antoinette "Toni" Tenille is the only officially recognised "Beach Girl". As part of the Wrecking Crew, she appears on some Beach Boys recordings. She and Daryl, along with Glenn Campbell, toured with the band as well.
At 55 years old, I want to thank you for constantly taking me for a trip down memory lane with this fantastic music. 65 and didn't like this stuff at the time, but it sounds great to me now for some reason. What was the "Captain" not wearing his captain's hat in this video, unless he wasn't there, hard to tell. Don't exactly know what he looked like without thehat.
Captain Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille, such an iconic duo. Five albums that went either gold or platinum during their recording career. I still remember the day it was announced they were getting divorced.
American Bandstand was the reason Love Will Keep Us Together went platinum. In fact they appeared on American Bandstand and gave Dick Clark a framed platinum single.
Toni Tennille’s then husband is Daryl Dragon. He is the son of Conductor, Composer and Arranger, Carmen Dragon. Beach Boys member lead singer, Mike Love, gave him the nickname “Captain Keyboard”, and the name stuck!
Toni Tennille had a famous musician for a father too. Frank Tennille sang with Bob Crosby and the Bobcats using the stage name Clark Randall. Most of the members of Crosby's jazz octet, including Crosby himself, came from The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Bob was the younger brother of Bing Crosby.
As long as you're on a Captain and Tennille roll.. here's some trivia for you: Toni Tennille was on the Pink Floyd album The Wall, she did some background vocal work on it
@@vandeolkon There's a great story of some random kid spotting her in the stands at a Floyd concert and saying "You're Tony Tenille! What are you doing here?" "I sang on this album." Kid comes back with a copy of the album after checking the liner notes. "Can I have your autograph?"
Apparently first lady Betty Ford requested The Way I Want to Touch You when they performed at the White House in 1976. Until the first lady spoke up, they weren't going to perform it because they thought it wasn't appropriate for the venue.
@@willdwyer6782 Oh wow, I didnt know that. I was only 7 in 1976 so I wasn't into politics and didnt know Captain & Tennille had performed at the White House.
Toni Tennille is the best! The Captain and Tennille were one of our favorites when we got married. I had the album, cassette, and CD of it. Nothing gets me out of a slump like this lady's voice. And yes, her smile is the best.
Daryl Dragon's father, Carmen Dragon, was a famous orchestra conductor and composer. He was most well known for his musical work in Hollywood films. He won an Oscar in 1944 for his work on the musical Cover Girl starring Rita Hayworth. He also scored Invasion of the Body Snatchers in 1956. Toni Tennille's father Frank Tennille was a singer with Bob Crosby and the Bobcats, going by the stage name Clark Randall. Bob was the younger brother of Bing Crosby.
Their show was really good. If I am not totally mistaken, on the last segment Daryl Dragon would invite people to try and bring an instrument that he couldn't play. He was never stumped. He was very talented. Great singers and magic together.
I stumbled across a RUclips video of a segment of their TV show where she sang a duet with John Travolta. They covered the Elton John/Kiki Dee duet Don't Go Breaking My Heart.
It's such a pleasure to watch your videos. I remember this song when it came out. I loved it so much because of that smooth vocal. And the flute! The flute was awesome. Your dancing made the song even better. Cheers!
That first side-glance at us when you realize w.h.a.t she's singing about is SO worth watching! "You Never Done it Like That": will put you on the floor, especially if you can still find the live version where she is wearing a long blue sequinned dress slit right up to HERE!!

Toni wrote this all by her lonesome, with Daryl producing on this, their first album for Casablanca Records, released in Fall 1979 in the US. In fact, she wrote half of the eight songs on their "Make Your Move" album. The duo released four albums for A&M records prior to signing with Neil Bogart's label, finally becoming label mates with KISS! "DTTMOMT" was their second #1 hit, after 1975's Grammy Record of the Year, "Love Will Keep Us Together."
