My family used to have rabbits, and one of them was definitely not a vegan. It tried to eat our chickens (AND OUR GUESTS!!!) multiple times and succeeded in ripping flesh off one chickens head before my parents dumped it in the woods out of fear. He's probably out there hunting foxes or something. RIP Raven.
Edit: it was violent and we couldn’t keep it because it was hurting other animals and people. Not Monty Python rabbit levels, but same vibe. My parents didn’t know it wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild, but honestly it could have very well done so because we kept them in our large backyard where they would dig tunnels all the time and forage through the ferns.

A lawyer isn’t going to do much of anything in that situation. It’s a crime to neglect a child, but there’s nothing illegal about simply telling a child you want them to give you money. Parents of a minor have legal control of their childrens’ finances.
It could be used as justification if the child seeks an emancipation, but nobody is going to be getting money out of it.

    The consensus was:
"Hey, you know how you always said that there's no wrong way to share the Gospel? Well, we've found it. This is the wrong way."
Why are you skydiving with a baby? Why can it speak? Why can you HEAR it while skydiving? It must be possessed. By the time I landed, I'd be Father Karras, hat and all.
...Also, it's just an appeal to force. "Convert or I will drop this baby in the fire" ain't much different. "Convert or we kill you," etc. So no, even if you were skydiving with a christian baby and he spoke to you like that, it would be bad. And Jesus would disapprove.

    • @hmnhntr
      @hmnhntr 6 месяцев назад +17

The first step would be defining intelligence, which no one has really been able to do in a concrete manner.
It's one of those things that *feels* simple and obvious when you say it, because everyone knows people that are smarter or dumber than one another, but falls apart if you try to examine the idea.

    • @FriendOfMara
      @FriendOfMara 6 месяцев назад

I think that saying IQ is a pseudoscience is potentially misleading (I study psych and neuroscience so this opinion is informed my my studies but please correct me if I get anything wrong).
IQ (usually referring to the same concept as general intelligence) is something that is still taught about and mentioned in universities, but not in the manner it is usually discussed in non-academic spaces. There is evidence that when we measure IQ we are measuring **something ** real. We know it has a heritability of 0.8 and can predict certain metrics like academic performance and job success for example.
To the best of my knowledge it is still being debated what general intelligence actually is (for example as @saraotto9593 said, some suggestions are factors affecting long and short term memory) and there are proposals for other ways of viewing intelligence like Gardner's theory. But the idea of general intelligence is still discussed. There are 2 parts of general intelligence: crystallized and fluid. Crystallized is all your knowledge and fluid is your ability to reason and manipulate information. What fluid intelligence actually is is debated and researched (I wrote an essay on it last sem). It might be working memory, ability to retrieve information from long term memory, and attentional control and stuff like that. And to the best of my knowledge, classic IQ tests are probably not great measures of general intelligence and have predictive power because they are measuring some mental abilities linked to intelligence like memory and verbal reasoning.
But my point is that the studies of general intelligence (which is usually referenced as IQ colloquially) are still pursued as lines of scientific inquiry, its just that we recognize more flaws with certain older theories and especially with classic IQ tests now.

24:00 While the question about the black cats is... questionable. Yes. Yes Europeans DID black cats dirty. As in cats in itself were considered creatures of Satan by the church and whenever something like famine or a plague ran through, they often hadn't anything better to do than to drown all the cats they could find - especially black ones.
You know... the cats, that hunted the pests that ... brought famine and disease... To cite Simon Whistler "The past was the worst." - to cite me, a bit of a history nerd and Larper: "The past is a nice place for a vacation - but you certainly don't want to live there."

actually, in the UK, black cats were considered to be good luck, and white cats were bad luck, it was swapped over when the superstitions entered the United States, so if anything (white) Americans did them dirty and are still doing them dirty, considering many black cats still get ditched by their owners and people are less likely to adopt black cats (I'll take all of them tbh, I love black cats)

We were able to play games that were a little violent, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Zelda, etc. But, this was back in the 90s so ratings weren't a thing and video games were still new and options were limited. My parents had me say things, though for slightly different reason and at younger age. I was smart and eloquent, but shy with strangers, I also stuttered a fair bit - strangers or not. I was going to speech therapist, took a couple years to train up my tongue to not fuck about. I was obsessed with carrot juice, and as I learned later, therapist recommended this whole action fairly early in my therapy.
My parents would give me money and stood behind me, and all I had to do was just to say hello, what juice I wanted and 'please'. They even told me - much later - that they asked juice lady (it was her own stall, she always ran it) to be friendly and to not get annoyed with my stutter, and juice lady was happy to participate in shenanigans. They literally set up a whole show just to get me through it, they also practised juice purchase lines with me at first to give me more confidence. I was 5-6 years old during carrot juice era, they went above and beyond to help me in a healthy and constructive way.
The juice story needed 3 retakes before I finally managed to say my piece, as I was blanking and clogging up at first so my parents would take over when they saw it was too much for me. When I succeeded on my fourth attempt, my parents were so pumped they gave me more money and told me to get 3 juices, 2 for them and and extra one for me. This was like the best reward for a 6 year old me. That being said, I'm now in awe how easy it was to buy me with carrot juice, smh, smh.
I became an expert in carrot juice purchases in a couple weeks. I'd tell juice lady stuff from my life, what did I learn, etc, something that would have never happened before. My parents got me to ask for more and more stuff with different vendors/places, or to even tell things in my own words when I was at the doctors etc. Supportive with a bit of handholding, praising me for successes, while giving encouragement and advice when things didn't go so great.
I am an introvert, I'm never fully comfortable with strangers, but I can easily manage if I want to. I'm 37 now, fully grown adult, my parents did an awesome job. Special shoutout to juice lady who selflessly helped out, and then became one of the first strangers that I really liked and felt comfortable with.
TL;DR: I became more confident and less shy because apparently my 6 year old self would climb the highest mountains for carrot juice.

What parents should do is model good eating habits and make sure the food kids have access to are nutritious and satisfying. But still, if he's not allergic, divorce him. It is actually pretty common for criminals that do planned crimes to have relatively high IQ, sort of like how psychopaths have high IQ. They know they are bad people, they know what they're doing and therefore plan ahead to not get caught. Of course that doesn't really work, and they're appearently not smat enough to just, you know, NOT DO THE FRICKING CRIME. But in general, criminals that do planned crimes do have a relatively high average IQ. Although the IQ system is obviously flawed and doesn't speak for genuine intelligence, but still pretty interesting

The best way to answer the question about weight or hard drive with or without data is an analogy.
Imagine a book. It has decent weight to it, doesn't it?
Now imagine the same book - same cover materials, same paper, same number of pages but all pages are blank. How much does it weight?
Technically the filled book will be a bit heavier due to ink used to print. But the amount added is wildly insignificant compared to the weight of the blank book. So they basically weigh the same.

I'm low contact with my homophobic/transphobic mom as a result and my dad (who was the "Man of the house" and once chased me down with a belt to spank me as a teenager) passed away in 2007. I wasn't allowed to listen to anything non-Christian music wise (with exceptions for classical stuff) and was homeschooled to keep me away from those "secular teachings". I went away to college and slowly deconverted from the good girl Christian to trans gay atheist witch they always warned you about LOL. I'm 36 now and just now learning to be happy in my own skin... culty behavior is nasty and traumatic!

I know how it feels. My father also has that “House Overlord” mindset and chased me with a belt when I was 9 (?) for forgetting to take his food out of the microwave and when I was 12 for changing the channel (from a kids’ channel that I didn’t like to a channel everyone liked).
As for the religion, I’d remember daydreams of being judged by God and classmates who (I believed) hated me for being “weird”.
I’m a closeted genderfluid person, and I hate how they hold my financial support over my head, as long as I do what they say and not mention my (actual) sexuality or gender identity. As quoted by my mother, I was “raised to be a straight woman”, but what should it matter if I’m not straight or a woman? and that’s when the comparisons to drug addicts and homeless people came up 😬 needless to say, i’d rather be on the drug addicts’ and homeless people’s (who, in the US, were usually screwed up by the system) side, so I became AnCom. All of this is hidden from them, but I really wish I could just be myself without being bound 😞

If you spent your entire adult life rebelling against your mother and are "just now learning to be happy", you're still rebelling against your mother and not actually looking for what makes you happy but what makes her angry. Congratulations on achieving a lifestyle in direct opposition to your mother's beliefs, have you gotten back at her for all the hurtful things she made you experience as a child? 18 years under her as a child, 18 years against her as an adult; isn't it beyond time to let it go?

I had my IQ tested in 5th grade. It was in the mid 140s. But...I'm also dumb as a box of rocks. As my grandmother used to tell me I had all the common sense God gave a doorknob. IQ is a meaningless number. Should add this was a legitimate proctored test in my school.

He always talked about the novel he was going to write, the scholarly papers he was going to publish, the plans he was going to fulfil to get rich, the house he was going to design, the businesses he was going to start - couldn't finish a thing to save his life. He ran a pizza parlor...badly.

As someone who tested in the same range in high school, I can confirm it's a useless method for determining someone's smartness. IQ measures one's ability to think logically and problem solve, but that doesn't mean you're smarter than anyone else. I have known really clever people with a low to "normal" IQ and a TON of idiots with a supposedly high IQ.

When I got an MRI the tech asked if I had any metal on or in me and demonstrated with her name tag why that was important to know. She clipped the tag to her pocket (clip was metal), stood a few feet away, then her assistant turned on the machine. The tag flew off her pocket and stuck to the machine. I made triple sure there was nothing metal on me.

36:08 Wow, this is a loaded question. First up: Yes. Parents do not beat their children, even when they literally ask for it. Second up: No child would so readily admit their kinks to their parents. Third: When we say child, are we referring to teenagers? Because, if not, the only other option is children way too young to know their kinks, and thus would be even less likely to admit their kinks to their parents. And finally, are you okay in the head? I don't think you are okay in the head.

4:31 when I was like 6-7 I went to vacation bible school. VBS. And one of the preachers dressed like a scientist with the name Dr. KnowItAll. And he was “a dumb evolutionist” and I asked him a lot of these questions and I think he got sick of me. But I think me asking questions like that lead to a genuine curiosity and now I believe that God created everything, including evolution.

20:48 ive heard of parents "charging rent" out of allowance to teach budgeting. They put the money into savings for when the kids are older. I've also seen having teenagers budget for meals and such (while making sure there's edible food in the house, of course)
    That story, however, is insanity

That sounds smart and nothing like my parents. My Nana got us bonds every Christmas from birth to when she passed away. They were supposed to be a little money to get us started with the things we'd need for college. My mom spent all of mine on my brother for gifts. She never lacked in money had a high paying job and got expensive gifts for my brother all the time including my birthday. My dad who is not my brother's dad paid child support and bought most of my things on top of that and paid for any trips I went on. My mom spent all the child support on my brother and herself and my brother's dad. I was responsible for cleaning most of the cooking, when I went on camping trips with my dad and his wife I'd come home to rotting food on dirty dishes in the sink (we had a dishwasher), trash would be all over the floor, piles of dirty clothes, empty cola cans all over the place. My mom kicked me out a week after my 18 birthday, I was still in highschool, my dad took me in and I finished high school living with him and his wife went mental and ran home to live with her dad during part of this. Later my dad went super controlling and I had to leave in a rush because he wanted to take away my means of transportation and have me take care of his home in exchange for living there. So good parents are not what I had
