Interestingly the Pythagorean theorem isn't quite as universal as you might think. There are other geometries ("non-Euclidean" geometries), like elliptic geometry and hyperbolic geometry, in which the Pythagorean theorem is not true. In fact Einstein's theory of relativity says that physical space is NOT Euclidean, although for everyday life it is very nearly Euclidean so this is a good enough approximation.

@@mohdhakimisa4071 So a technical-ish definition of euclidean space is a real number vector space. So basically, vector operations (adding, subtracting, dot product) cross product hold up. If you aren't familiar with vectors, another way to describe euclidean space is that you are able to move and rotate things without changing their geometry or space. In euclidean space, right angles are somewhat special, and all angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees.
Non-Euclidean space is space that isn't euclidean. This statement isn't very helpful lol. Spherical, and hyperbolic space are non-euclidean. Here, the Pythagorean theorem does not hold up, because triangles are weird as shit in non-euclidean space. It is possible to have a triangle with three right angles in spherical space. If you have a ball or a balloon, you could get a square and use the corners to draw a triangle with three right angles on that sphere and freak the hell out of you friends and family. Additionally, the math gets all fucky and different, thus the definitions get all fucky.
On a side note, we kinda don't know if we exist in a universe that has euclidean geometry, however, space is so big, we can still approximate 3D euclidean space for every day life.

@M J I don't want to act like one of those Quora nerds, but non-euclidean geometry precisely means (coordinate_1)^2 + (coordinate_2)^2 != (shortest distance)^2 . The shortest path between two points would be the diagonal if they were on a 2D plane. But if you move to a different topology, such as the 2D surface of a 3D sphere, then the shortest path is no longer a diagonal, but an arc instead (theses are known as geodesic).
Of course one might say that the 2D surface of a sphere is being represented in a 3D euclidean space, so the Pythagoras theorem still applies to the whole space, but the purpose of having these topologies (aka: a surface + a way of measuring distance) is to abstract away the properties of the said surface without having to introduce additional dimensions to make their representation easier.
One real life question this can answer is if the 3+1 dimensional geometry of the universe is actually just a 4D surface of some 5D closed shape (such as a 5D ball or 5D donut), or if it's just a plain old open 4D euclidean plane (which is what Newtonian mechanics assumed).
