    I love it when non horror games sprinkle in horror moments/elements. It helps spice things up and keep the players on their toes and ultimately helps the game become more memorable. But that's just my opinion.

      That's one of the things I've always appreciated about Nintendo; despite how cheerful and bright some of their games can seem on the surface, there is usually something horrifying lurking around the corner at some point in your experience.

    For me, it's the Ghost Leviathans in Subnautica that really do me in. They only really exist as a diegetic boundary to keep you from leaving the map, but considering the sides of the map are infinite, open, black ocean abyss (which is another thing that terrifies me), and then you have these invincible spectral giants that will pursue you until die, it was a good motivator not to stray too far

    When it comes to horror in non horror games, I always have to talk about the Halo CE level, 343 Guilty Spark. Such a strong intro to the Flood, and one I tend to find new details every time I return to it.

    The first one that comes to mind for me is from Uncharted. In (I think) chapter 18, on your search for El Dorado, you discover an abandoned Nazi submarine base, where you learn that the statue (yes, el dorado is a statue in this game) is cursed, turning people into horrifying monsters with enhanced speed and strength. As you explore the dark, unlit hallways of the submarine base, you are attacked by these things constantly, all the while you are only being fed ammo for WW2 era weapons that are weaker than the other weapons you have been using throughout the game. The only reason I played through it myself was because my older brother refused to do it for me. He argued that he didn't remember what to do, but I can't rule out the possibility that he also couldn't face those things in the dark, despite being 6 years older than me. Luckily, on later playthroughs I learned a speedrun wallclip that not only skips both chapter 18 and 19, but is also hilariously easy to do.

    • @Revenent530
      @Revenent530 11 месяцев назад +3

      For some clarification, the statue is actually a sarcophagus carrying what was probably patient zero of an ancient pathogen (basically a rage zombie virus in this case), one so horrific that the ancient people would have thought it was a literal curse. Also El Dorado originally was a man or icon of a man, not just in that game, but in real life folklore as well. The devs actually did their research

    Mine was Gaunter O'Dimm from Witcher 3. I was pretty immersed in the story and the ambience when Geralt was tasked with talking to the blind professor. The way he explained O'Dimm being evil incarnate already had me on edge, and then after he died, I, out of curiosity put out all the candles around the circle one by one. Game didn't tell me to. On the last candle, it suddenly let out an evil sigh + squeal of sorts like a spirit being released that sent a shiver down my spine.

    I always toss out Monster Oc from Ps1's Spider-Man 1. Spider-Man was/is my favorite superhero, so when Carnage merged with Doc Oc, it was nightmare fuel for a start. But the screams of "DIE, DIE!" as it ripped Spidey apart if it caught you during the chase, put me entirely off of it. It took me an entire year to go back and finish it after it terrified me during my first playthrough.

  • @FLuXX_PwR
    @FLuXX_PwR 11 месяцев назад +4

    One that always got me was the Spirit Realm in Zelda Skyward Sword. It's the human anxiety of being pursued by something you can't fight against, and are barely faster than. Not to mention the ambiance as soon as the safe soundtrack starts distorting until all the guardians wake up and make that chime that says "We're coming to kick your ass"
    A recent item that gave me the same chills was the Cyberpunk DLC. Being pursued by the robot at the end gave me the same anxiety of Alien Isolation. Unkillable enemy, it's faster than you (the sound of the robot's heavy ass footsteps speeding up because it saw you was horrifying), it follows you into the vents, and you have only got a split second to find cover when it comes into the same room as you. It was such a good experience that I actually forgot what game I was playing

    8:49 - Majora's Mask (missing timestamp)
    great video! the sudden shifting facial textures in both Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time always freaked me out because it was so rare and unexpected, there was this assumption that the character faces were always static with the exception of maybe a happy blink here and there. seeing an entire face change like that was so unnerving (another example is the Phonogram Man's face changing when you are adult Link, he looked so evil and demonic compared to his previous happy self)

    Ok mine is a real odd one. In a ps2 game called gungrave the game is mostly normal city type levels and bombastic music. But the final level completely turns the tone upside down.

    I love horror moments in non horror games. I feel horror excels in short bursts. Not just in scariness, but also in the mystery of a horror world. If the game goes on too long, the mystery is gone and the horror becomes more annoying than intriguing or scary. It’s why most good horror games don’t exceed 8 hours.

    I'll never forget playing Super Paper Mario as a kid when you get to the Underwhere's River Twygz. Surprisingly Mario's underworld isn't too bad. But when you get to that river... oh man is it terrifying. The deeper down you go, the bright colors of the surface dim to become a mire of darkness. You encounter the most chilling enemies in the game with the disembodied unkillable skeletal hands that perpetually reach out to grab you. Worst of all the quirky music starts to fade and it's replaced by these eerie ethereal haunting sounds.
    There also those moments where a seemingly cute innocent little girl snaps her own neck, twists her head upside down, spins it around, and then her head becomes a gigantic, mechanical, unkillable spider with her small original body hanging from the head.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Warden in Minecraft! The alien environment they’re found in all the way at the bottom of the world ensures that you’ll only encounter them when you’re already far out of your depth (ha ha,) and the horrendous sound and blinding darkness the Sculk Shrieker emits made my limbs lock up out of fear the first time I encountered it! And the Warden itself, my GOD! The way it moves is so unsettling! Not to mention the fact that they deal more than enough damage to kill even a heavily armored player, have a load of health, and are immune to most all forms of shenanigans means that you’re left with little other choice than to either cower in fear of them or run for your life!

    Uncharted 1's final act twist is always the one that jumps out at me for this topic. Going from such a happy go lucky, silly but still somewhat mature story to a dark, claustrophobic hellpit filled with literal zombies (and the FAST ones, mind) was such a shock to the system that I didn't play the game for about a week.
    I'm not sure if it was the supernatural elements that got to me or the fact that you're shooting at guys behind cover the entire game, only to get planted into a tight hallway with no cover and strong enemies that don't care about getting shot.

    The biggest pants-shitting moment I've had in a non-horror game was probably in Red Dead 2. When you're travelling through the Bayou, an event can trigger of a woman crying, so naturally you're like "aw shit what's wrong, I should go and help her." Well, as soon as you get close to her she pulls out a fucking KNIFE and all her swamp homies jump out and start running your ass down. There's no jumpscare, no scream. They are eerily silent, and the sudden transition from 'wanting to help woman' to 'about to get murdered' having almost nothing to indicate it makes it all the more terrifying to me. I was still feeling the chills for a while the first time it happened to me.

    It's so nice to see you uploading videos regularly again DeMod! I found your channel back in the day when you started making rankings for the Souls games (I can't believe how long it's been since then). Missed you on here while you were gone and I was genuinely so excited when I saw your "How fast can you touch grass" video. Glad to have you back on here

    My (personal) scariest moments in non horror games
    1. That first person joker segment in batman arkham knight
    2. WaW nazi zombies after the completion of the campaign
    3. Everything in subnautica

    I will always prefer horror elements in non-horror games, being in a completely different mindset when playing a game only to be caught off guard for a moment like that is way more memorable than any horror game ever could be

    How about cod bo3 in hypo center. It uses robots to give a night of the living dead vibe. You watch them awake from their pods or rise from the flooded ground and try to attack you.

    Would you rank the bosses of anima gate of memories and its sequel the nameless chronicles? These two games are games that I really like. There's a bundle for the two games that costs 30. Both games collectively cost 40. The bundle is called the arcane edition.

    I love segments like these. Metroid and Zelda have plenty. Pokémon enjoys a few as well. And open world games like Skyrim and The Witcher 3 have some creepy quests here and there. Or how about that horror level in A Hat in Time?

    I consider Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines as a horror themed game and not a horror game.
    But by god does it have some jumps in it. The mansion is the prime example but I’m actually gonna say the Internet Cafe is worse, damn near fell out my seat first time that happened.

    Wait what ? Vagrants in DS are rare ?? I'm really not trying to brag or something but I found 2 on my most recent playthrough, and I knew what they were, I just thought they were tied to PVP or something. Are they actually really rare ?
