  • Tommy Shaw's band takes the stage at Notre Dame University in Indiana on 4-27-85, the one year anniversary of their first performance, for a concert captured on film and broadcast as a television special the following June.
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

God, what I wouldn't give for Tommy to put a top notch band together and tour his solo material.
Don't get me wrong, I'm over the moon with the current Styx band and music...I just think it's a shame that he has so many great solo songs that never really got the spotlight they deserve.

The thing most people never really think about is when musicians like Tommy Shaw , or Lou Gramm etc back in the day were from a group structure. Thing is because a group structure is a bunch of personalities that are filtered in the music no matter who wrote, sang or produced the songs. You never really got 100% of a Tommy Shaw or a Lou Gramm till they actually went out and performed SOLO in their prime meaning its their personal heart , soul and vision, ideas they are breathing into the music . I love Styx but I would've had absolutely no problem going to see Tommy with his "own" band. He always gives his all.

Hope Tommy has seen this to know his solo time wasn't a waste of time. Really good material for the mid 80s.

His first album was pretty good; but the second one was TERRIBLE, save for like one song.

@@Poochpatrol : I beg to disagree; if you're referring to the PRODUCTION then yeah, you've DEFINITELY got a point - remastering did a LOT to improve that, though.....

@@ogam5 I meant the songwriting. I didn’t like most of them. I liked What If and Nature of the Beast somewhat. Friendly Advice is abysmal and True Confessions I can’t even listen to. 🙂I don’t think Dennis did any better. I liked three songs from Dennis on all of his solo albums. Still I’m a huge fan of both.

This is a great live concert of Tommy Shaw back from the 1980s, and during his solo career.
I don't want this video to be deleted, I want this video to live on through your RUclips channel and live on throughout RUclips. Because this is lost media, and from before myself and some of the other fans could not find a full life concert of Tommy Shaw back from the 1980s on RUclips.
So this video needs to live on through RUclips or on RUclips, so everybody can be happy to see a live concert of Tommy Shaw from the 1980s

Loved this show and remember recording it live off of MTV... the only thing that sucks about this one, is that he cut out most of the fun behind-the-scenes stuff that was included in the broadcast. :-(

Tommy looks so young. He must be close to 30. I think he joined Styx at 22.

the way Tommy butchered the end of Blue Collar Man! 😂 he had problems with drugs and alcohol at the time and was intoxicated most of the concert, explaining why he got some lyrics in some of the songs mixed up!

I get it now. I thought how could he make a song he sang for a long time sound like that ending. Thank God he got clean shortly after his daughter was born around 35 years ago.

I don't hear any "butchering" of that song at all. What are you talking about? It sounds and looks like he performs it all the time. Just sounds live and and not recorded, like he was having fun.
