      I saw them perform together when they toured in 1975. I saw two concerts back to back. I saw Beck ask McLaughlin to jam on Freeway Jam and McLaughlin literally went to a point where Beck threw up his hands and stopped playing because he couldn't compete. Jeff folded his hands afterward and watched like the rest of us. In the mid-70's McLaughlin was untouchable. Two totally different styles for sure. I wish those two concerts were recorded on video that would be great to revisit those concerts.

    I have a feeling that after Les Paul and Gene Vincent, John McLaughlin was the next most influential guitarist, and Blow By Blow would not have been possible without John McLaughlin's influence.
    Among the musicians who took part in the Jeff Beck tribute concert organised by Clapton, it was John McLaughlin who gave the most outstanding performance.
    The depth of the Jeff and John bond was felt.

    • @chunyemalerguognimamuol2506
      @chunyemalerguognimamuol2506 Месяц назад +5

      The member of musicians on that concert had a good line-up, but the musicians didn't seem to have had much practice, and the performance had the feel of a primary school music recital, with a lot of noise and messiness.
      However, I believe that John stood on stage with the Jeff Beck Band, played his guitar with sincerity and with his feelings for Jeff.

    • @costabotes9107
      @costabotes9107 Месяц назад +7

      One should also mention Derek Trucks as an honourable exception to the ‘messiness’. His rendition of Goodby Pork Hat was pretty spellbinding, and for me evoked the spirit of Beck.

    • @barrieflix
      @barrieflix Месяц назад +2

      I was there at the Albert Hall - Not unexpectedly the guitar playing wasn't as good as the man himself (who I saw many times live). John McLaughlin was probably closest technically, though Derek Trucks was probably closest to that Beck sound. I think actually Imelda May was my favourite moment.

    Wonderful! What I love most about these two guitarists is they both sound completely different than the other, and they're both equally great. Beck is the most creative and expressive of the two that night.

    • @GCKelloch
      @GCKelloch Месяц назад

      A. Which night? B. Depends how you measure those metrics. I love and miss Beck as much as any guitar player. He does more with sound textures and unorthidox techniques, making the most of the electric guitar's sonic potential, but McLaughlin applies more melodic and chordal variation. It could be said that McLaughlin is more creative/expressive, or at least has the ability to be, from a purely musical standpoint. Creativety is hard to judge in players with such different approaches.

    Beck wasn't even in the same league as John McLaughlin.

    To me Beck ,like van Halen, would have belonged more in a Circus performing all this tricks. Mc Laughlin is a musician.

    I hate it when rock drummers try to play jazz.

    Jeff Beck is a rock musician after all. Not jazz.

      Then you haven't delved far into Beck's body of work. He was doing jazz-fusion, which incorporates both disciplines, @ least by early 70's, & probably earlier..
      1974, I saw him with Jan Hammer, in the middle of an otherwise rock 6-band line-up; Jan's opening line was, "Uh, we gonna do a little different kinda boogie!", & they busted into full on fusion of 'Wired'!

    I can't stand the tremelo arm vibrato the beck uses. It's so primative ....sounds like an annoying child learning to play.
