June 25, 1975... Abused as a child and a ward of the State in a foster home, I got the chance to see Tommy Shaw with Styx at the Memorial Hall in Racine, Wisconsin USA. I didn't know I could sing back then and was pretty beaten down at that point and for a while after that, but Tommy you're music and talent made a great impact on me... Years later in the 90's I got the chance to sing at Memorial Hall... so cool... I'm so glad that you are still there sharing your music -- God bless you :)
I know how you felt. There was something about Styx-if you tuned your voice, you connected somehow. Dennis was like a vocal professor, but Tommy was a journey into guitar. I knew I certainly could not be the only one who grabbed a hold of this 'magic' in Styx and used it like a grappling hook to crawl up out of the darkness. JY made sure you got your money's worth. Got give the propers to pull who should have them 😅. Look at things in the Light❤
Had to come back & see it again! Tommy is flat out Awesome! Really love his stories! What I don't understand is, how are you not blown away by that pic Katie? Did you not ask him he recovered from being that far over the rail? I'm guessing that, with being past the point of no return; Tommy would've had to 'Very Quickly' let go of the guitar & grab the rail. But with his feet so high, that's still 'an incredible' stunt & pic! (also really love that 911 cross, El Cabong and his collection). Thanks so much for this interview Katie & Tommy!
Saw Styx again on July 12, 2023 in interlochen, Michigan, the first time was around 1976 at Cobo Hall in Detroit. He is a true gentleman, so thank you so much for all of your great music.
THANK you for the info!! I DIDN'T KNOW that! I'm "69" yrs young an to me Tommy's THE HEART of STYX even when he was IN THE "Damn Yankees" in the late 60's early 70's Ted MAY HAVE towered over Tommy, but Tommy the cute TALENTED one showed NO insecurities with Ted Nuggent GONE WILD as usual!!! 😂
Tommy is the best! He's one of my rock idols. Such a great singer/songwriter/musician. In 1980, I was 16 years old and went to a summer camp in Greece. For the talent show, I played acoustic guitar and sang "Boat on the River". With an amphitheater filled with 250 campers and counselors, I performed it and got a standing ovation. I knew right then and there that I just loved being on stage and performing. Tommy has always inspired me so much. I'm 56 now and I've got a Gibson Les Paul (just like Tommy) and perform with my band whenever possible. Through the years I've seen Styx in concert numerous times, and they were always incredible. Tommy seems like such a genuinely nice guy. God Bless him. Thanks for this intimate interview.
Gosh I just totally dig Tommy man ..Great guitar player song writer and singer ...Dude is my Hero...I was just singing his stuff Christmas shopping with my babe today
I am in love with this man! I have been since I first saw him on stage in the 70's. It's nice to see he's still Tommy Shaw. He's into dogs too. Neat guy! My kind of man.
Saw Tommy and Styx first time live in 2018. Fantastic show! Tommy is a true rockstar! Absolutely killing it musically and looked like he was having a great time doing it! Very impressed!
I've been a Styx fan since first hearing them back in the mid-'70's. First saw them live in '96 and went on to see them 9 more times; the most recent was in Charlotte, NC back in August 2022. Good stuff for 40+ years.
Love Tommy! At 9 I bagged my parents! Got a little acoustic! Took lessons from local College guy! Told me my guitar was unplayable! Broke my heart! Long story Parents wouldn't buy me another! Soo.. I got another at 20! played ever since never looked back! I'm now 64! Thanks!
Tommy's performance of The Angry Young Man with the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra is worth taking a look at. My spirits are always lifted after watching this video. Check it out, you will thank me!
I watched the whole thing and as a musician myself I was so blown away by the enthusiasm those kids had for music generations older than they were, it showed so unmistakably on their faces that it has restored my hope that the future of music is gonna be more than just glorified karaoke, autotune, and smartphones. Those kids could actually play and sing and looked like they were having a hell of a good time doing it!!!
"el Ka-bong " hanna-barbera's cartoon Quik Draw McGraw's incognito caped super hero ( he is a Horse ) and his side kick ( donkey ) was named " baba Louie " ..... Sytx one of my fav bands of all time .... thank you for this content
Saw them on June 23 1983. No opening act...billed as "An Evening With Styx"....I met J.Y. and Tommy in 2000 at a Holiday Inn as they were getting on their tour bus. J.Y. is very very cool and down to earth.....Tommy was a true class act.
@@godwillguideme.3773 Never knew that, but figures the music companies wanted to put that out there fir a band's name. They were more subtle in letting us know who they work for...now it's more blatant n in our faces constantly
this might sound unbelievable, but many of my rocking buds and i thought of styx as somewhat soft. at same time went to multiple reo, elp, boc, sabbath, van halen, RS, WHO, clash..........finally in 2014 went and saw foreigner and styx. foreigner was completely without members but their songs are just so strong. then came the show that included all of styx with the exception of dennis deYoung. immediately it was apparent why styx produced all those platinum sales albums. the live presence and especially tommy made it clear they still rock. my first styx purchase was mr. roboto album. most listened to tommy shaw was his time with dam yankees. i think of guys like tommy shaw and love of country comes to mind.
Us regular folks seldom realize: we go to see our favorite band once...maybe a few times. The spotlights shine, the effects flash..ooh...aaah. And then the show is done, and we go home and rest our eyes. Bands like Styx play sometimes 180 shows a year, with all the lights, and their eyes looking right into them. Not a lot of recovery time. So they wear sunglasses. Part of the life, I guess!
Nice to see you in another light The top 10 can get corny I love your attitude So so glad your station came along a fan since day 1!!!!!!! Keep Rockin an ill keep viewing
at 5:15 she asks Tommy what songs do you recomend kids play on the guitar during quarantine. Wouldn't it be hilarious if he said 'Babe', 'Mr. Robato', 'Don't Let it end' and 'Desert Moon"?
Remember in the 70's when rock bands would smash their guitars? I tried to learn "Knocking on Heaven's door" on a cheap guitar I bought to try to learn to play. I sucked so bad, at a party, I played the song, then SMASHED the guitar, because I knew I would never be good! Got a great laugh out of it!!!😆
You know, you RARELY see any celebrity show off a piece of American memorabilia like Tommy's piece of the Trade Center... How often is it that a rock band would even CARE ENOUGH about this country to put it front and center in his collection. And the fact that they had concerts for the benefit of the Port Authority... WOW...... Its funny, but I guess I'm not really surprised, because if you've listened to Styx's lyrics over the years, they were very proud to be Americans, and lifted America up in their songs like Suite Madame Blue and others. So impressed.
Here's an idea if you like epic music. 💡 You need to listen to Mötley Crüe! They are epic and they have the best drummer ever! HE CAN EVEN PLAY UPSIDE DOWN!!! Look up Kickstart My Heart, Dr. Feelgood, Home Sweet Home, Primal Scream, and Tommy's drum solos. You won't regret it!
@@godwillguideme.3773 They're so cool! Yeah, Tommy is awesome! Definitely, if you like Ratt you'd like them. Tommy is in the video for Back For More by Ratt. Yes they are very famous and have sold many many records. Tommy is the best drummer ever! Let me know what you think!!! They are going on tour this fall with Poison, Def Leppard and Joan Jett. Tommy, honestly; if there is a better guitarist than you, I have no idea whom that would be. Styks, to me, is the most entertaining band EVER! I saw you guys in Grand Forks in 74 when you opened for the Holly's.
