What a rewind this is ! Those were the days as 1 may say ? Great tune great band when things were just as tuff when working 4 less than you were worth , but then we had great music and bands of fantasy there were so many ! Thanx 4 this brilliant is true ,
Lol! All i can remember is Roger at the mic as usual, then you hear him starting to crack, then the vocals stop and you see him still holding on to the mic, but his head is on his arm and he's just shaking with laughter! The rest of the band are standing around, miming half heartedly and grinning all over their faces! It's absolutely classic!
Bought it Loved it, wish he hadn't packed it in recently, great keyboards and amazing live act (saw them 72), far better than many of their contemporaries.
The most original chord sequences for a "pop" record ever. Amazing it was ever a hit. Nowadays they wouldn't get on TV or radio because they are too original. True Genius!
I can remember this band being talked about in terms of almost reverence, such was thier esteem at the time.News at Ten reported"Family have just come on stage" one night!!!
Oh the memories. First heard this on the Waltzer at the fair in Dumbarton when I was 14. Remember Silver Machine by Hawkwind too. Ended up going on the Waltzer just to hear the brilliant music.
Being a 10 year old punk in 1977 and rejecting everything long hair this was always unlikely to be on my radar. I discovered this as late as 2013, its immense maaaaaan!
I heard a comment after a Family track on the radio, and the DJ said " Roger Chapman" ( I thought, here we go, praise, where praise is needed) "the only man I know able to sing with a cauliflower down his neck" :) laughed and understood, but I love this guy's voice
and now i think about it I remember seeing Family at Dustable Civic Hall (i think!) and someone sarcastically shouting at Chappo "Saw your picture in Melody Maker this week Rog! very nice!" To which the ever subtle "Rog" leeringly replied "Did yer wank? Didja?" Lol! Bet that bloke never shouted again!!
I saw a clip once where Chapman was laughing so much he didn't even attempt to carry on singing! I've always thought it was a TOTP appearance - did i imagine it or does anyone else remember it?
Where's the "like" button for what NicWizz said? (I have actually seen Family live in the 70s and still think that some of their non-hits are at least as good as what made it into the charts) No mule's fool LOL
I've seen Chappo in various line ups over the years, he's still great, and i never go home dissapointed. X Factor is shit, this band along with all the other greats would not get through to the second round.
one of the greatest voices ever. superb band.

I remember the sheer shock of first hearing this as a Kid .. Utterly brilliant.
It was the same when you were nineteen having seen them live 18months beforehand in Glasgow, trust me.
One of my Favorites from a long time ago. thanks. John.
One of the few really really great bands of all time, they are up there with Tull, Roger has the most original voice thanks for posting this gem

My home town homies! Great days going through puberty to these sounds.
Awesome 👏
One of my desert island discs. Great time signatures and chord changes, how did they keep coming up with intriguing melodies like this?
I wish someone would put it up, i'd love to see it again!

there were two bands that people always talked about in england at that time, the beatles and family. especially musicians.
Chapman growling every word out....
Love it! Wow I was 13 when this came out.
Check out the "Streetwalkers" stuff too - for more from Messrs Chapman & Whitney.

haha! haven't seen or heard about that one...there are a few TOTP's not in the archive, like their "Burlesque" appearance...
When I first heard this song in 1971 then I thought it was a reggae/rock hybred...not sure why now!

How can five people make such a refinded pandemonium with the sound systems that were around in them days? Awesome isnt quite adequate.

No mule's fool LOL
I remember it well. Roger seemed to be rather drunk. The rest of the band weren't laughing. I don't think they ever did TOTP again.
WASN'T IT JUST ?

is wetton on this?
must be him....
It's not John Wetton on bass ; it is John Weider , who preceded Wetton .
non, c'est Rick Grech à la basse.
No , Ric Grech had left Family to join Blind Faith a couple of years before this .
