One of the greatest rock bands in the world that no one ever heard of.
+Dave Ritter No one that is except for some us discerning types eh? :-)
Got ALL original records Seen them dozens of times marquee in 60,s Roger is a one off
I plead guilty also to seeing them live and loving them. Exceptional, creative musicians with front man who is totally one of kind.
They are easily as good as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix Experience or any other famous band from that era
I'm lucky enough to have seen Roger Chapman live twice in 2016 and 2018 and a few of the songs from the concert I filmed and are on my RUclips channel
i heard and followed throughout, one of the finest [many great bands that time /one of the greats , right up there
Here we are in 2022 and I'm really thinking this gets better and better with age. There is literally nothing else that sounds like these guys in 50 years between
First band I ever saw live. At the Bay Hotel Sunderland 1969. Absolutely brilliant and frightening at the same time. Unique and still my favourite band.
A cousin from Scotland visited us in detroit around 1970. I was 14 he was probably 19. He asked me if i had eard of family? I hadnt so he played them for me. It was a great way to kick off my music beginnings. Never forgot that, still have all their albums and Streetwalker also.
2024: Detroit here too, bro! I was 19 when I picked up Anyway from Harmony House, didn't know them at al but as an art student was intrigued by the da Vinci cover art, then became obsessed with their sound. Best part? Roger Chapman released another album as recently as 2021. Life IS good :-)
When they were on form nobody could touch them.
first saw them in 69. my favourite band for ages. truly original. thanks for the memories
His voice is so unique ,even when you heard their music 50 years ago you recognize it immediately. At least I do...
You are right about Roger's voice. It is unique.

The Human Goat.
When I heard a few tracks from Music In A Doll's House on the radio, I was hooked.
For me Family ended with the formation of Streetwalkers. I kept faithful to the magical Family albums.
Roger's voice was in that case made by primitive vocoder, built by magnetic tape delay. Bur the effect was the great one.
What a brilliant band! Absolutely loved them back in the day, but only now do I realise just how good they were. ....stunning
I saw Family 3 times at the small Mothers Club, Erdington in c1970 so this brings back memories. The first time they still had the great Jim King on sax and flute. I always got to front. Unforgetable.
Greetings from Erdo 👍
Music in a dolls house my favourite family LP
An absolutely incredible band - wonderful in the studio, electrifying live. You have to listen to all the tracks on all their albums to start to understand the breadth of their artistic achievement, which is uniquely theirs
grahamt33 They certainly covered a lot of ground, musically.
I'm so glad that this footage has been preserved. A really talented and unique band - brilliant stuff! Thank you for sharing
On my list of bands that I unfortunately never got to see but knew how brilliant they were, enlightening times 👌
A,1,ooo thanks,my favourite band from the 60'⁹s 🤸🎶🍀🤸🎶
Wow. Followed family since Isle of Wight when they were on last. Absolutely brilliant and I was hooked. I think Roger was the greatest male vocalist. Still love Family.
+Dustin Nealey yes sure. Followed Family and others. He was magic.
Proof right there, Roger Chapman invented the mike drop
Love Family. My favourite of all time.!
I lived with some of them at 93 Oakley Street in 1969/70, a house commemorated by their instrumental 93's OK J.
I always loved the first line up with Jim King.
Thanks for uploading this. Followed family and roger since I was 17 I am now 67 and still love there music .brings back so many great memories.
Gostaria de saber a mensagem da música? Em português!
Sean Family at cellar club South Shields Tyne & wear 1971.
They were great.
chappo is the best rock voice!!! Family are one of the best rock band ever
What a gem. Saw Family and Streetwalkers 7 times in th 70's. Great to actually see film at last. They really were one of the greatest bands of their generation.
....And the award for the rock vocalist with the most manically insane vibrato in history goes to Chappo
Bloody Marvellous...cheers me up no end
I had the pleasure of seeing this band open for Jethro Tull at the Boston Tea Party back in the Summer of 1970.
I agree with you - the whole Jim King issue and his departure in 69 was obviously sad because he had issues - that is for sure. But to speculate why he went and how Family would have moved on if he stayed would be ... speculation. Also to say Palmer was "very weak" is just plain wrong. The four albums he played on and no doubt contributed to are excellent and his vibes/keyboard/flute work were an integral sound to Family in this exciting period.
Brilliant band ! Top musicians with the most insane vocalist ever .
Nigel Flannigan Reminds me .of Jethro Tull and the more insane Ian Anderson.
Yes. I felt intimidated and I was in a crowd of 100 or more folks. (1973 or so.)
I loved this band. Used to blast their albums. So original and unique. Streetwalkers were also tremendous.
i heard of them , loved them and even got to see them about 11 years ago, brilliant and vastly underrated!
First heard Chappo the ‘human goat’ at York Uni in 1970. Amazing band, why the hell weren't they more famous? I still have Music in a Dolls House and it’s as fresh as the day it was pressed!
Great great band, great Chappo. Thanks for your music.
Had their first 2 albums and saw them twice at Sunderland Locarno.
They were an incredible live band, as good as anybody.
We only wanna break the chain of society
Put the people back on the road to reality
We only wanna turn the whole world on
Our leicester boys saw them
First 72 at the De mont 👌🎼
Leicester's finest, used to catch them regularly when their set consisted mostly of their first album, not easy to replicate live and they did it effortlessly.Heady days!
The advent of GENESIS.
Both Peter and Tony have said in interviews, that Family were an early influence.
A most awesome band.
Genial grupo, Roger Chapman, con su peculiar forma de cantar, canciones icónicas, de finales de los 60's, simplemente maravillosa agrupación, THE FAMILY,... Patrimonio cultural de la humanidad!
My first introduction to this band was a movie/video called Psychomania.Never had heard of them at the time, but man did they have something....been into 'em ever since...incredible musicians, and vocals, just absolutely great stuff......
These Leicester boys should have been as big as Kasabian, the Foxes and the Tigers. Once in a while a truly unique and talented band slips through the net and sadly Family and the Streetwalkers were that band in their era... I first remember hearing Burlesque at the age of 13 which totally blew me away and i have come to appreciate them more and more in recent years. Thanks for putting this footage on YT for all of us to appreciate, wonderful.
They were a big name in the early to mid 70’s, most young people had heard of them 😎
Been to over 150 Family Streetwalkers and Shortlist gigs I am so lucky😎🆒🎸
Beats my 100.
Band fantastica!!! Chappo straordinariamente meraviglioso!!! 😍
Superb memories of this wonderful band! Thank You :)
Just fantastic sense of tunes
One of my fav bands for sure
Roger and the band like I remember so well in those decades a while ago
Five times more powerful and intense heard live
Wow! This exists? Pheeeeeew
Chapman ... what a PHENOMENON
Lots going on here. Flute playing vibraphonist (Poli Palmer) and violin playing guitarist recruited to play bass (John Weider). Seemingly underrated guitarist John Whitney and the incredibly unique vocals of Roger Chapman. I missed seeing them when they toured the US opening for Elton John.
Superb band
Wow this classic, prime! The quintessential line-up. I saw them open for Elton during a Stateside tour for 'Bandstand' and a couple of years later saw Streetwalkers open (?!) for Dr. Feelgood. My copy of the box set 'I'm Walking' Streetwalkers Complete '74-'77 arrived today. Can't wait to crack it open!
I saw them open for Elton twice on that tour. His audience were terrified of them. They were absolutely spectacular. I managed my way backstage somehow, I was possessed. They were incredibly kind and friendly. I had seen them a year of so prior with Savoy Brown and The Nice. They appreciated that I was a big fan.
First saw them when I was 17, I'm now 70. They played the Wake arms pub, Epping forest Essex. The week before, saw my first band, Sam Apple pie .
I remember those Sound City heads, the valves were bigger than KT88's, would be handy in the current UK freeze & austerity; left on for an hour they could warm a whole county!
I have recently worked on something in the studio where this series was made. Studio 6 at the old Granada studios in Quay Street Manchester. It has to be said that it is a wonderful room and he atmosphere in there is just electric :)
toute ma jeunesse ! a vif !
John Weider on bass--this is the "Song for Me" and "Anyway" lineup. Very cool to have this.
Sensational band!
John Weider was great. He stepped into Grech's shoes. And then some.
Coming from leicester saw them many times at the Rondo and the Poly. Still the best!!
Still one of my fave bands... along with Streetwalkers of course... Rog, THE top voice of rock music for me..... all things considered.
Thanks for sharing J B I
That was twenty minutes well spent! Classic
I always get visions of a nanny goat when I hear the singer in family " the singing nanny goat"
Still brillant!
Roger as such a great croaky voice that it compliments rock music , long may they keep performing.
.. Superb stuff,...
My dad’s favorite along with quicksilver messenger and Edgar broughton. , I used to listen on his headphones when I was six before my mum kicked him out for being a pisshead. Missya Dad, you was one cool dude.
Thank you, takes me back in time, still love them 💕
Да, было время.. что ни группа, то открытие.. а это просто бриллиант, так и не ограненный (недооцененный) до конца. Одна из моих любимых.. Да и кстати БГ считает их одними из своих главных учителей и вдохновителей.
Thanx a lot! Biggest underrating band.. one of my lovely.. one of the great influencer ever.. for B.Grebenshikov e.g.
thanks for this, they were the best, and chapo is still the best.
I thought I'd watched the whole series at the time, but I don't remember anything of this. I always liked them.
THIS IS HISTORY
I've been a fan of this band since the very early 70's. Still own their entire back catalogue on vinyl, and eventually CD (though I prefer the vinyl). When I first heard the opening song ("Good News-Bad News" found on their 'Anyway' LP), I immediately thought of The Who, and still do each time I hear it. Great footage...thanks for sharing :)
I thought of Nirvana- and how powerful this sounds in comparison even today.
Fantastic voice
Fantastic! thank you for posting this live show. My first was the Anyway album, after that I was hooked.
I saw them doing this stuff at The Royal Festival Hall in London. It wound up as part of the Anyway album. These guys could only be English!
I really appreciate you posting this. Thanks.
No one else ever sounded like CHAPPO .
+Dave James WELL PUT GUMMY ! the kids today just have scraps of garbage to get stuck into , but 40 years ago we feasted on a banquet of diversity that still nourishes today .
+mac man Totally agree, last band I saw in LDN b4 going to Souf Ozzie
They are a fantastic band! Thanks to my mate James for re-introducing me to them. Are they still performing? Would love to see them….
Great stuff. Once saw the Streetwalkers in Rotterdam... He crushed the theatre with his voice. They had to build a new one.
once again....this is why I love RUclips
DROWNED IN WINE YES!!!!!!!!!
GOAT
Great band 👍🏻
Testimony to their music and standing in rock history, 50k plus view is no mean feat in this age of utter, utter 'auto tune' garbage. I'm so thankful for music like this.
Great to seee the 'Sound City' heads, student digs central heating for musicians :)
Hiwatt heads were a bit warm, too!
Exquisite!
When Family drummer is a good thing.
Trivia: After this concert Chappo was arrested fro cruelty to tambourines.
Musik wie sie sein muss !
What a voice. Chapman is in trance.
many many thanks!
UNIQUE VOICE & BAND ✌ g
Fantastic!
Joe Cocker meets Robert Plant ;-) great band!
=free =humble pie=faces=from 70-
Ja so war daß Damals!Ihr jungen Sänger von heute schaut euch das Video genau an.
I never had a problem with Poli, and he was excellent last week at the reunion gigs.
any recordings to share?
