Family were always vastly underrated and never got the recognition that they deserved, Chapman had a unique voice and a group of accomplished musicians behind him. Revisiting nearly 50 years on.
I bought everyt album Family and Streetwalkers released . Roger Chapman is one the greatest rock vocalists/front men ever . Family , one of my all time fvourite rock bands deserved much more recognition than they got .
We know buddy. Let’s not share it with the sheep. Saw him live in the 90s in his, and my home town of Leicester. No point trying to explain to the deaf. He’s an immovable block of rock history.
Listened to Family late 60's early 70's but missed these guys until now and am sad that it's taken 45 years to hear this for the first time I will make a serious effort to rectify this.
🌧 🌦 🌥 🌤 🌞 ...& it stayed out for the rest of the day! On my 19th birthday too -what a brilliant gig. The Outlaws "Green Grass & High Tides" hit the spot for me man. ❤
Ive seen Family and Chappo many times what a tuuuuuuuune love it last time I heard this played live was back in the 70s at the Buxton festival with the streetwalkers it was raining that day and as soon as Roger kicked in with this song a miracle occurred and the sun appeared from behind a cloud....
I saw them @ Swansea football ground on my 19th birthday -when they played this song the rainclouds parted and the sun came out for the rest of the day -it was magic!
Same thing happened at Buxton Festival in 1974...overcast/drizzly all weekend, then they performed this, the sun peeked through, then went away after the song...
18 years old, first month in London and heard about their farewell gig, but sold out. One of the great disappointments in my life. What wonderful musicians, what wonderful music.
Saw a phenomenal Show at the Starwood mid 70s and the Set was split between Streetwalkers and family songs and I was very happy to be there because it was the closest I was ever going to get to the family
Only got to know of that song because of a cover down the pub. Absolutely love it. Played with Steve Simpson (once)...nice guy. Nicko McBrane !!! Are you kidding me ?! What a talented geezer he turned out to be.
I don't know the album, but I did see the Streetwalkers back in about 75mat the Roundhouse, and this song was a moment of calm magic in an otherwise rumbustious, energetic set, and is still a great memory. I love the Family version too, there's something about John Wetton's harmony/counterpoint vocal that so suits the song. Will always love My Friend The Sun
Just discover this band, and like many others, i have that WONDERFUL feeling of listening to something amazing for the first time. I only have listen to this song, i need to listen the others on the album, But man oh man, those guys are some wicked musicians. Nicko mcbrain on the drums, pre maiden (i think). This is a hidden gem from the 70s. Absolutely fell in love with this sound!
I can see Cat Stevens doing a gorgeous cover of this. Also almost has the feel of a Gabriel anthem. Wonderful. Tench plays and sings it so beautifully you'd think he co-wrote it. I love this band.
I've been listening to Family for 30 years but I never even knew about this stuff. Bloody brilliant. Roger's really getting his singing voice together with this band, especially the heavier side of it, as in 'Run for Cover'. Now, having all of Family's albums and thinking there was no more to have, I can start collecting Streetwalkers albums when and where I find them (still got a good turntable ;-).
All of Chapman's projects are awesome. Oddly enough, I became a Family fan after tracing McBrain's roots back from Maiden. It's a shame, but it seems like the British listeners picked up on a lot of gems that hardly anybody noticed here in the US.
I have to say Streetwalkers' version outdid Family's. Tench's vocals really take it to a new level, and the best version ever was thankfully captured on the 1977 "Live" album.
@@paulmichaelconnell495 I said this on another video but Bobby Tench should have a been a bigger deal than he was. He was a great singer, a helluva a guitar player and was comfortable in multiple genres. It's kind of sad he never became a star.
Never got to see Family, as US tours were rare and dates always seemed to get canceled. Did see Chapman/Whitney Streetwalkers twice playing small clubs in local Baltimore/DC venues in '76/'77(?). I remember band being more rockus than these videos, and Roger C. walking on tables, alternately consuming or kicking over patrons' drinks-he seemed to prefer shorts to talls. Great band, great shows. Roger's a grand old man of English rock now, but whatever happened to Charlie Whitney?
@robertlaberge THANKS!! i mean really thanks..i thought those guys are gonna keep chit chatting and wipe the sweat over each other till the end of this clip! nicko looks great as a young man =] his friend used his towel after him! with his sweat on it! Cheers V

I like Family's original version of this song, but I LOVE this one. Bobby Tench on backup vocals really makes it I think. That's not a knock on John Wetton's work on the orignal either. That was good; this is great.
Family were always vastly underrated and never got the recognition that they deserved, Chapman had a unique voice and a group of accomplished musicians behind him. Revisiting nearly 50 years on.
Meh, meh, wot!??? He is still singing! Why don't you check it out, surf to his personal site, go for it!
One of the most underrated bands of all time . 😢

Absolutely stunning live version of stunning studio song. Family were so good. When Ric Grech left for Blind Faith they only got better.
I did this song on Guitar as I was in the School for my music CSE Test.I actually got a A1 for this and this song I will NEVER forget.

Was that the Buxton festival where the first day had SNOW? If so, that would make in 1975.
Superb song!🤗
Bob Tench ......great guitarist and vocalist.
Glorious song👍👍👍 So glad to have seen them on this tour at Theatr y Werin, Aberystwyth.
I saw them @ Swansea football ground on my 19th birthday -when they played this song the rainclouds parted and the sun came out for the rest of the day -it was magic!
I was there too! What a great day at The Vetch
Same thing happened at Buxton Festival in 1974...overcast/drizzly all weekend, then they performed this, the sun peeked through, then went away after the song...
Totally beautiful!
Reminds me of my Dad. Great band, great voice. Roger Chapman singing while my old man joined in while pissed as a fart..... Memories.....Thanks Da!!

What a terrific video! One of Chapman's best songs ever.
Thnx for posting it
Superb. Thank you for posting.
Timeless classic....
No other voice like Chapman´s.
I saw Street Walkers playing as a warm up band for black Sabbath 1975 in
Copenhagen, the where really great 😈

Absolute vocal perfection from Roger!

Such a moving song without being sentimental
GREAT TRACK & BAND ☺g

1976 at the Veitch Field Swansea's old ground as support to the Who and others -- pissing down until they played this... Magical JK
i was there, magic
В Иркутске купил Family "Bandstand", это первая покупка была этой группы и не прогадал.
Magic.

+Dermot Mitchell I agree 100%
He provides a lovely understated guitar solo too! Bobby btw is still with us and has a long standing residency at the Bulls Head in Barnes.

WE WANT GOING BACK TO THE SEVENTIES TO DIE...
Drummer and guitarist share a towel ?.......EWWWW
That drummer is a young Nico McBrain, who went on to be Iron Maiden's drummer. Cool, eh?
God I love this!
Oh my gosh! Very beautiful!
