Honestly, I preferred the "male pattern baldness / regular head shave" theory. It means that Luthor doesn't have to suffer a personal injury to muster a mad-on for Clark; his ego is cankered enough as it is. (Besides, he could then point to himself as a trend setter as lots of celebrities do the hairless look: Stone Cold Steve Austin, Patrick Stewart, Bruce Willis, etc.)

Meal Stub Luthor was bald however he had a wig. Hackmen didn't want to cut his hear so he was wearing a bald cap for some scenes. So Lex Luthor was wearing a wig and Gene Hackmen was wearing a bald cap. Tere is a scene where Lex removes his wig and is bald. Pretty meta. I can't remember the reason (or if it was mentioned for his hair loss). In the 80's Superboy series it was a lab accident at the university Lex and Clark went to.

My favorite explanation for Luther being bald is the explanation that he wasn't bald until he started his rivalry with Superman and it was carrying around the Kryptonite that caused him to go bald due to the radiation from the Kryptonite this is been seen in several iterations of the character and it's the one that I think is the most logical

  • @SylviaMoonbeam1127
    @SylviaMoonbeam1127 8 лет назад +4

I like the version in the Smallville show. Lex has crazy long red hair in that, but lost it all in the first episode. Lex is out in the field watching the kryptonian meteorites falling, and one crashes close enough to badly burn him. The one time Lionel is a good father in the show, he rushes over to him and instantly comments on his burnt hair

As for why Lex baldness I knew the back story about the freak lab accident but I always considered it a trait of Luthor's personality.
Nowadays it is frequent to find young boys with dreadlocks or tattoos working in important jobs but back then society was completely different. When Superman was created up until the early 60's people believed that society is driven by reason and the more civilized you were the better you were.
This is why back then Superman was called ''THE MAN OF TOMORROW'' not '' THE MAN OF STEEL''.
If you look at the old 1930's and 1940's cartoons and even many of the golden age comics you'll notice many of the bad guys and lowlife punks had tattoos and wore very short hair or were bald. That's because the more ''outside'' of the norm they seemed to be, the more savages they were. This is true to Lex Luthor's bald henchman you mention in the video. And I think this is also why the image of the bald Luthor was accepted.
He is the antipode of Superman, who is genetically superior in body and mind but appears to be frail to show sensitivity so he's a civilized person, Luthor OTOH is maybe the biggest genius mankind has ever produced but he is ruthless because his reasoning is driven by his own puerile ego so he's a savage.

  • @Calzaki

The BIG one you missed is where Lex lost his hair just from handling Kryptonite for a long period of time, keeping it on his person in case Superman ever caught him unaware, thinking the radiation only affected Kryptonions but finding out that after prolonged contact it caused symptoms similar to radiation poisoning like baldness. This has been played around with a few times, the most recent being that the Kryptonite didn't cause his baldness but did give him cancer. However the original version was a kinda acknowledgement that he had hair and then lost it after he met Superman

  • @VeryAwesomeStuff

I liked the real life version. I think that was a good mistake, because Luthor looks better bald.

  • @DavidbarZeus1
    @DavidbarZeus1 9 лет назад +30

Actually, my favourite version of how Lex lost his hair is the Smallville TV show explanation. In the pilot of Smallville, Lionel Luthor is visiting Smallville on the day that Clark lands, and Lex is with his father. Clark lands in Smallville in the midst of a Kryptonite meteor shower, and Lex is close enough to the blast site of one of the meteors that the radiation kills his hair, kind of like chemotherapy does. Interestingly enough, the kryptonite radiation also cures him of the asthma that Lex had suffered from up to that point.

+Kenroy Cherrington Yeah, that fits most of the stories about Lex and Kryptonite, but after looking into the origins of Superman, I thought they got switched. Original Superman was basically Charles Xavier, only more super, and I thought that maybe when they were looking for Superman's worst enemy, they picked the other Super Man; The Super Man was bald, super-intelligent, telepathic, telekinetic, and just overall the next evolution of man. Aside from the psychic abilities, it just seems like Lex could be the ultimate in Human intelligence, if he wasn't so obsessed with chasing Superman and profit.

It's interesting how Smallville obviously took inspiration from the Superboy version of the Lex story. The shrine is much like Lex's investigation/shrine room in the series. Lex saves superman from kryptonite in a farm field. Lex was in Smallville in a farming related industry, etc., etc. I think Smallville made Lex bald as a result of Clark's arrival maybe to make the character more relateable to Lex's character for the audience, for the sake of expedience, and to make him a troubled outcast. It's always interesting to see how the comics affect tv and movie adaptations especially in the small details that you wouldn't notice normally.
Edit: They also had his red hair in Smallville before he lost it funny.

The friendship between Lex and Clark on the Smallville TV show drew inspiration from that same comic from the 60s. That's why they started out as friends in the show. Lex even had a shrine of sorts to dedicated to Clark if you consider his holographic recreation of his car hitting Clark on the bridge as a shrine

Hey Scott there is also a really cool reason why Martian Manhunter is afraid of fire. As far as I know, (I may mess op so of the details, it have been some time) - :
The Guardian of the Universe insisted that the Martians was too powerful, and that they needed a way to keep them in check. So the Guardians decided to implement the fear of fire in Martian GNA, with made sense since there existed a race called The Burning on Mars (Fernus), that now has an advantage against the Green Martians. So Martian Manhunter is not weak to fire his GNA is just messing with him.

My internet is really bad today and i'm having trouble watching this. On the bright side I have watched the first 30 seconds several times and have come up with some possible reasons to why your hair is missing.
    1. You cut it.
    2. Your balding.
    3. One of your crazy fans sneaked into your bedroom at night and and stole it.
    4. A horrible lab accident.
    5. That new shampoo you bought didn't work as advertised.
    6. The instructions on your microwave were unclear.
    7. The stress of running a youtube account, as well as being the first member of the plaid lanterns, is causing your hairs to fall out.
    8. That new comic book you purchased was laced with some strange poison created by the evil and corrupted government.
    9. You are turning into Lex Luther.
    10. The sock gnomes have evolved to want hair as well. (God help us all...)

I love the comic version from the silver age for what Geoff johns said about it on the commentary for that super friends episode Scott mentiond, Geoff brought up that lex losing his hair and the death of that thing he created is the result of supes handling a fire so imagine what will happen on a large scale is supes tries to stop a missile or something. It goes perfectly with lex's belief that superman is a threat even if supes means well. Granted I can go on for hours about lex's idea about supermans influence making humans to reliant on superman.

I recall Lex Luthor being made bald by super boy in a comic where he put out the fire and blew Luthor's hair off.. This seemed to have started the feud. It was aided along the way by various slights that Luthor felt were done by Super boy. Of course I want to see more of the super man mythos. My understanding is that super man was born one long hot night where his creator could not sleep, so he kept adding to super man's origin story.

There are two kinds of shrine things: the creepy kind and the normal kind.
Creepy: Having the normal things like action figures and dolls.....as well as like if the person/thing had feathers the fan would have one of their feathers and that kind of stuff
Normal: Having the same stuff minus the weird "artifacts"

It is not a comic, but the Smallville TV show had an interesting reason. When the pieces of krypton and superman's ship arrived on earth, a young Lex got separated from his family and lost lost in a corn field. Or of some type of field. Anyway, the combination of the impacts and radiation resulted in Lex losing his hair from then on.

In the Marvel Comics homage to the Justice League, "Squadron Supreme," the Superman analogue Hyperion faces a villain known as "Master Menace" (notice the alliterative name) who blames the hero for causing his hair to grow uncontrollably, an obvious reference to the silver age Superboy-Luthor story.

an topic that would be cool if ya did, is about Hank Pym little accident with Wasp (you know what i mean) as that too have its own interesting BTS story, as the original script had Pym slapping her by accident and not on porpuse as the comic shows because the artist made it more dramatic than how it was meant to be and it was too late to change the panel before it went to print

    • @NerdSyncProductions

conner kilmer The figure was first Deadpool, but I replaced him with Thanos. No particular reason other than I already have two littler Deadpools on the bottom shelf (one lead-cast figurine and the other is a LEGO figure) and I didn't want there to be three Deadpool figures. So I just put Thanos there because I think he looks better. And that is also Aquaman there. He hasn't changed. The rubiks cube does have a new pattern on it that I like to change up occasionally.

Both Tywin and Trump are rich and mean so the artist was definitely on the right track. Now that's why I ❤ art. A simple mistake can be turned into a signature look!! 👍👍👏👏

The theory about Leo Nowak also posits that he mistook the Ultra-Humanite for Luthor. I don't buy this so much as the belief that he pulled the design from Superman, vol 1, number 4. Some people are still stymied by the fact that Luthor is even Superman's arch nemesis. What about Lobo, or General Zod, or Parasite? Opponents that could give Supes a run for his money. The concept is that Lex ISN'T super powered. It's his ability to outsmart Superman that makes him so badass (you know, like the Batman kids). This is a conundrum that has followed Lex since the Bronze Age. That's when Lex created the battle-suit and Superman was so powerful that in order to clean his uniform, he had to fly through the sun. Literally.
I wish you'd do one of these on the development of Superman's powers in general. How he went from only being able to do the things in the preamble of the radio/TV series, to being able to travel through space at light speed without having to breathe, then the post-crisis tone down by Byrne/Wolfman/Ordway, to whatever they're doing now. Good video.

Great Episode as always, Scott. I think it would be really cool if you guys could do a video on who is the real creator of vision, in some comics it was Iron Man and Hank Pym, in some it was ULTRON, maybe it's one definite answer, and I'm confused for no reason, however if you do know, you could just reply to this. Also I'd like that if you ever decided to do this topic that you'd do it maybe nearer to Age of ultron, that way you could get more viewers for your channel

Idea For A Comic Misconception Video:
Did The Weapon Plus Program Benefit Wolverine Or Not?
    Wolverine WITH the adamantium bones:
    -made him stronger
-^ however made his regeneration slower due to the poison in adamantium
-made his bone claws indestructable (in xmen origins sabretooth stamps on his claws and breaks them)
-gave him bad memories of the operation
    -Weakness to magneto
    Wolverine WITHOUT the abamantium bones:
    -Regeneration MUCH faster
    -Less health
-no deadpool: the reason for deadpool was because of wolverine (in comics; not real life btw), i won't go into detail
    -advantage to magneto *
-he would survive longer without the mutation (like in the 'death of wolverine' comics: once again, i wont go into too much detail)
-He would become much more like an actual wolverine (his healing state wont be constantly used turning him into a wolverine, i cant go into much detail but yeah - his healing factor is 'reinventing' wolverine constantly and, if left 'unchecked', wolverine would get the animalistic features like lots more hair etc. where the adamantium comes in is : because its poisonous to humans, the healing factor is always at work, making regeneration slower but keeps wolverine more 'human' you could say - i cant go into too much detail but if you don't know much about this search it up)
*not necessarily 'advantage' more 'not disadvantage'
Hopefully this makes for a good Comic Misconceptions video. :)

A little epilogue to the story of the red haired Luthor. After DC consigned all the Golden Age comics to have taken place on Earth-2, they declared that the red haired Luthor was the one of that alternate dimension. He was rechristened "Alexei Luthor" and was the number one adversary of the Kal-L Superman who married Lois Lane. This Luthor made his final appearance to date in the 1985 miniseries CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. In the 9th issue Brainiac and Luthor from Earth-1 organize all the villains into a take over bid of the five remaining worlds of the multiverse. Alexei objects to taking orders from the Earth-1 Luthor claiming there should only be one Luthor. Brainiac agrees with him and disintegrates Alexei with his eye beams.
