Probably my favorite guitar solo of all time. Jimmy was on his game and in the zone when he did this one. Like most of his stuff. There's nothing flashy, fast, or super difficult about it but it's so intricate and amazingly expressive. ...and he came up with this based on his own spin on blues players who he sounded nothing like. All the guitar work in this song still floors me every time I hear it. Thanks Jimmy
Astute point, my friend. Page's licks and phrasing on Since I've Been Loving You without question draw their inspiration from Blues legends such as B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, and Otis Rush, but Page veers into Spanish Flamenco territory at times during this solo -- particularly how he (I'm not sure how to describe it) plays a phrase with a "majestic", "noble", "punctuated" yet fluid feel. Page's solo in Achilles Last Stand has the same feel. I employ that feel in my playing rather frequently. It's less about technical chops, and more about dramatic flair. Carlos Santana has mastered this feel too. It's quintessentially Latin.
@@georgetebbens3524 Page was more inspired by 1950s rock n roll musicians than blues artists, Since I've been Loving You, has a lot of Peter Green, which is the basis of British blues, the subtlety, the malice that is all American blues, obviously the English blues was inspired but it created a new strand in blues, and Jimmy Page synthesizes this in this pearl of song.
Thank Otis Rush, as well as the "Three Kings of the Blues" -- B.B. King, Albert King, and Freddie King. (All four of which -- among others -- I've seen play live many times at small Blues joints here in Chicago.)

It feels like you’re one of the only people on YT that will tackle an entire complicated song like this and really show all of the minutiae with great respect towards how the artist actually played it. Your channel has been a wonderful resource for me, thank you!
Carl, I am fortunate enough to have discovered you early in my guitar playing process. I love your videos and refer to them when learning songs. You have kept the passion / inspiration to play alive and burning and I can't thank you enough.
It's been a while since I subscribed to your channel, lately I just grab my guitars again and I've felt in love again with playing guitar. Your channel has helped me a lot. Thank you very much for your excellent lessons 👍
In the key of C minor in case anyone is wondering always good to know what key songs are in before you try and learn them that way you have an idea what you are about to learn and won't get lost as long as you know your keys and scales it makes learning anything a little easier
Thank you, that will definitely make it a lot easier, now I know what scale he's playing, I can work out what he extra notes Jimmy is playing outside of the Pentatonic scale. I noticed after you said the key, that he is leaning in the 2nd (or 9th) note from the scale (not normally in the pentatonic) this will help me a lot with my soloing.
@@chrisparti exactly he mixes major and minor scales in with pentatonic scales in the same key. Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads did that as well. Actually a lot of people mix major minor scales with pentatonic usually in separate phrases or runs
@@pagerhoads1531 I've started doing that myself only very recently.... e.g. the C major and Am scales, I've only started using it in the first major position so now I need to expand it into the other positions too. I found learning the major scale actually helped me better understand the notes in the minor pentatonic scale too, as previously I had just been playing minor pentatonic licks using those scale patterns, with no idea whether I was playing a root note or a 3rd 😁
That's so funny... a million years ago I asked my guitar teacher that I wanted to learn this song... more than a month I asked and asked the closest he could come was it's in the key of C and you don't need to learn the song... If this is your passion, I guess go for it. I will say this...this song is brutal for speed, dynamics, and timing. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be too harsh by any means, but obviously this lesson is not for a beginner. Perhaps, if you learn your chords, scales, modes, bends, pull offs, hammer ons, slides and so on it will make a lot easier. Also listening to the song closely and a lot would help. By the way, this is a video lesson. You're supposed to stop, rewind it and play it as many times as necessary. And the best of all, it's FREE! My only qualm with this particular lesson is him not telling the name of the chords when he's doing the double stops or fragments of the cords. After you play them, you know. It would just make easier and faster to navigate just by listening and not having to look at the screen. But it's a minor detail... He's a great teacher, though! I would just spend more time learning those those things I mention above. It'll be worth while and you'll pick these things up very quickly. I hope I din't sound too harsh and I hope the advice helped. Peace

I'd like to know what is going on from a theoretical point of view at 2:49, when he plays the b string on the ninth fret. Can anyone explain this note to me? In my opinion, these little notes give the song its uniqueness.
It's the (flat) third of the Fm chord it's played over. When you look at all of the notes in the phrase, it's the C Natural Minor scale, which overlaps the C Minor Pentatonic/Blues scale, and is the same as the Eb Major scale.

Jimmy Page was a dark god of the dragons instrument, its a shame to see some of his mystic powers exposed this way...but i love learning it! Thanks Carl! you make it look so easy.
A little late , but I believe he is using both pick ups out of phase on his les Paul to get that rolled back sound . Or he's using them both in phase with it rolled back on both pick ups . Sounds out of phase to me but I know on one of his wiring diagrams he had it so he could play them both in phase as well
+Kariem Feseha I would love to do Purple Rain(or any Prince song for that matter), I used to do it for my Vegas band and I love performing it, but unfortunately Prince never allowed his music in any way on RUclips. Incredible musician, I wish I could, RIP...

I would just spend more time learning those those things I mention above. It'll be worth while and you'll pick these things up very quickly. I hope I din't sound too harsh and I hope the advice helped.
Peace
Do you need like a special pedal for this effect? And which one would it be?
Carl, you have the best guitar lessons on RUclips, I mean that. I used your tutorials to learn Babe, Im gonna Leave you, but just like this original lesson, the sound has been muted for copyright reasons. Would you be so kind as to re-upload the lessons? thanks
+Reed Wojkovich I wish I could but it is up to them whether this is on RUclips or not. hopefully it will come back soon
@@vaportrails7943 Amazing! thank you for the response. This will give me a good starting point for further incorporation of the theoretical knowledge.
please Red House Jimmi Hendrix
Hi Carl I love your videos they really help me to learn new songs, could you please upload a video on how to play gold dust woman by fleetwood Mac on guitar
I like this guy because he doesn’t throw a lot of heavy music theory on me.
Thanks for this lesson. I'm at the part where you change pickups. Great great lesson. Just she we can't have the performance we usually have. You must have emulated it to perfection lol
I wish I could play like you. And, thanks so much for this great video
Jimmy Page was a dark god of the dragons instrument, its a shame to see some of his mystic powers exposed this way...but i love learning it! Thanks Carl! you make it look so easy.
Eres lo máximo, Ralph.
Gracias.
Excellent lesson!
Thanks Carl always wanted to learn this.
6:37 for placement
I got lost with trying to master minor pentatonic
9:23
A little late , but I believe he is using both pick ups out of phase on his les Paul to get that rolled back sound . Or he's using them both in phase with it rolled back on both pick ups . Sounds out of phase to me but I know on one of his wiring diagrams he had it so he could play them both in phase as well
How do you get that beautiful tone, I've been trying soo hard, but can't seem to get it right.
Search for SInce I've Been Lovin' You on Wikipedia. They refer that page used a diferent amplifier. Actually funny story ':D
Great lesson!
How do the notes sound like the attack is rounded off? Are you using a compression pedal?
I’d like to know too
Lista la primera parte..gracias por la leccion, mañana voy por la segunda parte...🎸🎸🎸

CARL,
WE NEED PURPLE RAIN!!!!
+Kariem Feseha I would love to do Purple Rain(or any Prince song for that matter), I used to do it for my Vegas band and I love performing it, but unfortunately Prince never allowed his music in any way on RUclips. Incredible musician, I wish I could, RIP...
Wow,
That's really disappointing. Well, than i have 2 find another way.
+GuitarLessons365Song risk it bro. just post it and if it gets taken down, it gets taken down. but there is a chance it might not get taken down.
+liamfenwicker first off that would be disrespectful and most importantly copyright strikes are pretty serious for someone who makes a living off of youtube.
holly wow i'm speechless just incredible RAW SKILL AT IT TRUEST FORM THANK YOU +3
Hey Carl, could you possibly give a lesson on The Song Remains the Same version?
