Having been to most of the major cities in Colombia from Riohacha to Cali…commenting about the treats you bought and being African American…I’ve never had any race issues anywhere in Colombia. I was excited to visit Choco and the Caribbean cities like Cartagena and Barranquilla where the mix of African, Spanish and Indigenous are more pronounced, but I’ve had a blast every time I have stayed. I have been visiting Colombia since 1996 and I love the country and the people…and the food!!! OMG!

Congratulations Dan on one of your finest videos yet! I loved all of it.
One obvious reason is that Medellin is one of my favorite cities. How fortunate you were to spend a whole month there. After my second visit to Medellin in 2019 I seriously considered relocating there. But the pandemic put the brakes on that. However, I'm going back for another visit in August.
Medellin is one of the most physically beautiful cities I know. I urge people to try and stay in a place on an upper floor. I stayed at an airbnb on the 24th floor of a high rise and the views were out of this world.
I also went on a Comuna 13 tour. It's one of the must-see things in the city. I agree that Poblado is a little too touristy. I stayed both times close to Metro Bicentenario. A gritty neighborhood but I never had any trouble. In August I'm staying in Laureles, a bit more upscale.
One of the things Medellin is most proud of is being the only city in Colombia with a metro system, something even the capital, Bogota, doesn't have. I'm surprised you didn't film there. It's very safe. Graffiti free and takes you most places you would want to go. And it includes an unforgettable cable ride to neighborhoods at high elevations.
BTW I never depend on my cell phone for the time. I wear the cheapest, ugliest watch Walmart sells. So I don't have to reach for a phone to tell someone the time. And if anyone wants to steal my cheap watch, go for it!.

Bogota started constructing a METRO on October 2020 with a completion date of October 2028. Barranquilla is also in the process of constructing a metro/light rail (COVID delay).

At first I thought this video was kinda corny (still do lol), but you have some great nuggets within this vlog, and I like the way you articulate what you see and experience. I'm an American who has lived several years in a S. Amer. country, and I've been many times to Colombia (my favorite!) and I totally get the nuances of Colombian neighborhoods you seem to be describing. I especially like how you compared El Poblado and Laureles or Belen to like a swimming pool and an ocean in terms of the experience one may feel. Also, I'm a black American who loved the little bit about certain "terms of endearment" that wouldn't stand a chance in our countries! I was called "negro" in Argentina, and I called my overweight friends "gordo" and it was nothing jeje. Thank you for a great video, I look forward to seeing what else you put out.

And to answer your question. What you kind of experience ( even if it very limited ) is the way Medellin and most of Colombia is like. Fortunately or unfortunately. Some are privileged and live in a bubble full of pleasures while others struggle and have a hard time living a day at the time.
The lesson however is that Colombians are probably among the most resilient people you will ever meet and despite the challenges people are friendly, warm and welcoming.

I also loved your swimming pool / ocean analogy about travel and going into some of the more uncomfortable situations - or rather just getting out of your comfort zone to go out and experience the world for yourself. You are the new media showing us great places and very personal experiences. The best travel channel there is. Love this video. I’m heading to Colombia in 2 months, as Hispanic myself, I’m so excited. Btw, Hispanic people are NOT sensitive to the race factor. We take nothing in offense. Like “negro” (Spanish pronunciation) is not offensive. They actually feel very proud to be called like that. If you say it in an offensive tone, be sure ALL OF US will gang up to protect that person from your attack. We do see each others as the same or equal regardless of skin color, it’s a sense of community. we all suffered from colonialism at the end, some countries consider our black people as heritage so we all work together to preserve it but they do not feel or think that they are better than the rest of us in the country. We all one people.
It was a culture shock when I moved to the US and found out how sensitive people was here. My husband had to walk me through everything to adapt better 😂.
Man I can’t wait for Colombia, I’m so excited ❤❤❤❤

Great episode Dan, brought back memories of the time I spent there. It truly is a city like no other! I stayed in the Laureles neighborhood when I was there, and I really enjoyed it - all of the areas of the city are wonderful in their own ways!!

Good to follow your gut even if you overreacted. On the packaging us foreigners don’t worry over such simple things. I’m Canadian born in Jamaica so I understand what you mean, great video.

Dan, not far from Comuna 13, I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood in Medellin. I had to live through the 1980-1990 drug-trafficking violence that the drug cartels generated… that was the other part of Medellin, most of us who live in it suffer and we lost families and friends in an absurd war due to greed the ignorance of the murderers for seizing the power of a country that was the medellin of millions of victims that you did not talk about in your video

I can see why you would say this... but he does have a video showing Barrio Escobar.
Also, I think that he was trying to seperate Medellian from the Narco Wars that have been made so popular today through the Netflix show, as well as the other TV shows and documentaries focusing on Pablo, Popeye, the Ochoas, Lehdar, the Cali cartel and such.
One of the first things people think of when mentioning Columbia , especially Medellian, is Pablo and his Narco Terrorism. Atleast here in the US that is how it is. I feel like he did this video in a manner that tried to show the beauty and diversity of the city and not just focus on its lethal past. I don't think he meant to disrespect anyone. I think he meant to show the utmost respect by not focusing on those things and instead showing the city's true beauty.

Another great video, Dan!! The way you take the viewer through town on your walks with you, bringing us into conversations with locals and other such strangers is so much fun. In my opinion, there’s no better way to travel than to get out of that bubble and experience the culture in a less filtered way. I’ve added another destination to my list now. 😁🐢

Funny thing, I've been talking and videoing with a lady from Medellin for the past 2 years and after hearing you talk about Community 13, I asked her if she knew about about it or knew where it is. She came back and told me that she lives there.... Interesting. I'll try to get more information from her in the future.
