Little bit unfortunate timing because the last 3 videos have all consecutively offered something the best that I have seen, but I can confidently say this is among the very best because it's class leading in its performance and its keyboard, and I think those 2 things make the biggest impact to the experience. One thing I'd also like to address is that I measure thermal performance not based on temperatures alone, but how many watts the CPU and GPU can dissipate. Wattage can be compared directly against any other laptop regardless of the CPU or GPU it's running, but things like clock speed and temperature (temps by itself) cannot because they depend on other variables.

I really appreciate this. In hindsight it is so obvious: TDP is a measurement of cooling capacity needed to reach that wattage. You’re simply measuring the REAL values as implemented. What is the actual TDP of this exact laptop? With that said, it’s not the only metric. At the end of the day you’re still using a certain spec component combined with TDP to hit a performance level. But it’s a very helpful metric. It’d be interesting to hear what you think of a Thinkpad T15g or P15 given your P1 review.

Jeez, what a great review! Great, thorough, great perspective... You're one of the few out there who understand that gaming laptops are great for work and not just for gamers. And that this (and/or others) are worth the looks if they are not your thing, but productivity and performance are. You talk about sound, etc., ie. usability across the board. You should have way more subs... Sub'd.
Wonderful vid, I would’ve totally bought this machine a few months ago on the back of this review while I was researching it. However, the stuff I did look up on this laptop gave me a couple questions as to your opinions on the thermals and opening the laptop up. (Please note, just a couple of my thoughts! I am also a huge fan of your style of not always reviewing with the highest tier gpu available, thank you for doing this) Reading your comment on your thermal measurements helps put it more into perspective, but I still can’t help but disagree slightly. First, I still think having the cpu temps running in the high 90’s when it’s being pushed to as far as it can go does not bode well for longevity. I’ll admit, it’s highly unlikely that people will buy this thing to run Prime95 24/7, and the gaming temps are pretty decent, but that leads me to number 2 These temps are with the 2060 config. Again, you did specify that this was running an rtx 2060, but all the higher configs’ thermals are hotter than the sun with with a nuke strapped to its back. With the praise you’ve given the cooling system, I the uneducated viewer, would assume that this thing’s cooling would be sufficient if I wanted to get the model with an rtx 2070 or 2080, which the stock cooling is not built to handle at all. Not that any buyer’s failure to properly research a product is your fault, not at all, but I feel your praise of the thermal solution relies on the fact that we’re running an rtx 2060, and even then the temps aren’t stellar for the performance imo. Addressing your comment, I understand your hesitation to use as opposed to wattage as opposed to actual numbers since they can vary a lot, but the temps I saw in your video line up if we account for the fact that most others have a higher tier config. Point being, this is not a worst-case showing of the thermal system, which in my opinion, the cooling crumbles under anything worst than this. Now, if one were to buy a higher spec config, they would find it immediately necessary that you need to underclock as well apply a higher quality thermal paste. Now, these options are not normally hard to do, throttlestop is readily available and all you have to do is pop open the back and.... oh... the motherboard is inverted. This one is minor, and a little nitpicky now that I think of it, but I think it would just be a nice mention that the mobo was inverted, making any potential repaste harder if someone wanted to get better thermals. Ok, RUclips essay done lol. To summarize, I think the cooling on this thing is just okay at best and it would’ve been nice to just have that aural reminder of the motherboard being inverted. Thanks again for an awesome review.
Very good points. I'll try to address them all here. In terms of temperatures, it's pretty bad yes. 100 degrees is actually pretty rare to see nowadays; usually it's 90-95 degrees, which is hot but not right up against the limit. I guess in future videos I'll talk about both the cooling performance (measured in how many watts the cooler can dissipate), and the whether the temperatures the CPU runs at is safe for extended use. As for higher configurations, I can't seem to find the TDP for the RTX 2070 and 2080 Super Max-Q. The same thing happens with CPUs; some reviewers claim Intel's 8 core CPU runs hotter than their 6 core CPU but my testing suggests otherwise. I had both the i7 9750H and the i9 9880H with the 16" MacBook Pro and they ran at the same temperatures because they both consumed the same amount of power. Presumably lower clock speed to compensate for the extra cores, but because higher clock speeds require an exponential increase in power (they're definitely not a linear relationship), you get an overall net gain in performance. Notebookcheck claims the 2080 Super Max-Q has a TDP of 80-90 watts, and Techpowerup claims 80 watts (sources below). IF true, which is weird because the new RTX 2060 has a 115 watt TDP variant up from the original 90 watt TDP, then the higher tier GPUs will not consume more power and therefore output the same amount of heat or less. I don't trust either of those sources because the Legion 7i I reviewed 2 weeks ago ran at 104 watts at 62 degrees (Furmark, CPU was not being stressed), plenty of headroom before they start throttling (somewhere in the low-mid 80s for NVIDIA, I think). Notebookcheck: www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-Super-Max-Q-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.459206.0.html Techpowerup: www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-2080-super-max-q.c3515 One thing I may not have mentioned is I always do thermal testing with the fans at full speed (if manual fan control if available), or I enable the performance power profile if available. I never test thermals with the fans at their stock fan curve. This is because 1. manufacturers know people dislike loud fans so they run their fans as slow as possible to prevent throttling. In the case of this m15, its stock fan curve will never run its fans anywhere near full speed so it will perform quite poorly. 2. if I show the default fan curve, you can't extrapolate its full performance. If I show the measurements at full fan speed, it is possible to estimate the temperatures if you were to reduce power consumption. I personally think the flipped motherboard should be criticized, and it looks like I forgot to mention this in my review. The issue with a flipped motherboard is it brings the heat to the keyboard rather than the bottom panel. If the heat pipes are right under the keyboard, it's going to heat the interior more than if the heat pipes were on the bottom because the motherboard can shield most of the heat from the keyboard. I messed up again by not recording the surface temperatures with my thermal camera, that's my bad. To address the main concern of the last paragraph, that assumes the higher spec configurations actually consume more power and output more heat which I cannot find evidence of, and my testing with the Legion 7i suggests otherwise. Very good insight by the way. Just unfortunate that I can't seem to find the specs for the mobile RTX GPUs.
Infinity Labs thank you for your response, I had forgotten at the time of writing this that there are different variants of wattages for the same GPU, sometimes sometimes not specified by the OEM. Again, awesome vid, and I will be hungry for another 15 days or whenever you upload next lol.

I bought an Alienware 17 a few years ago. Top of the line, maxxed out everything, including the 3-year warranty. Then I started having issues a few months in. It was in and out of service over and over and over again. I finally asked them to just give me a credit to another model and they refused. I finally just gutted it and pulled parts (memory, SSDs) out for another PC and threw the case in the trash. After having spent over $3500 on Alienware and getting a worthless piece of junk that broke over and over again, I think I'll pass on buying anything from them ever again.
I have had a completely different experience. Bought an M15 Alienware 10 years ago, still works fine (just the battery is dead). I don't use it that much and leave it at my parents' place, but I never had any issues with it. Quite something actually.
Loved your review. I felt it was the best overall review out there!! How is the battery life on this one? Some say they are getting 5hrs on the 144hz panel while some say 2.5-3 max? Thoughts pls
Someone else commented that the 240 and 300hz screens don't have NVIDIA Optimus so the discrete GPU is always active. That would probably explain 2-3 hours.

Great video! I'd like to know how much power the thunderbolt port can be plugged into, and how much it contributes to extended working hours. The information I can find shows that Dell 130-Watt Type-C 3-Prong AC Adapter can be applied to Alienware M17 R3. However, Dell's sales are confused about whether M15 can use this Adapter, which is really funny
If you wanna see some high level DOOM, check out FrostyXen. Dude clears out demons like he's spamming the BFG lmao. You can also get much higher damage output if you quick swap between precision bolt and the rocket launcher because the switching animations are much shorter, but it's a lot more difficult to do consistently.
I've had this laptop for around a year or so and I've had a lot of problems with it. for example battery settings not working and performance issues. However I would still recommend getting this laptop but with better specs which will help with performance. Anything longer than 1 hour gaming time i see the performance decrease which for a gaming laptop is poor (due to how hot the cpu gets). But for average gaming like call of duty ,Minecraft it works.

I purchased an M15R3 in Sep, raised a support request 3 days later as the GPU was ticking under load. Dell replaced the heatsink assy. Shortly after the sound chip stopped working. Dell agreed to replace with a new u it. The new unit arrived, was great until it had a no POST issue. The GPU had died on the second unit.... Dell have issued a refund 4 months after initial purchase. While it's pretty, 2 failed units tell me there is something going on with their reliability. Will see how I go with an MSI Ge66 when it gets delivered this week.

Hi good morning WAT I love the review of this video. It gave me so much explanation on the laptop itself, thank you for this. My question are; 1. How large can the laptop storage be upgraded. 2. What kind of SSD are compatible with the laptop. 3. Can all three SSD port be filled and how will they be seen in the boot drivers? Thank you so much as I await your answers.
I am interested in buying the Alienware M15 R3. Wanted your opinion that if it can handle the thermals of i9 and 2080? Or would a i7 and 2070 be better thermally without losing much performance. Thanks
I did r3 ,i7 10750h, rtx 2070super, 512gb raid0, 16 GB RAM. Since I work a lot on programming (AI, ML, algorithm design related) projects a good GPU was key for me and this config compares well to some of the best virtual gpus available on Google colab and Kaggle as well. My only concern now is whether the battery life will be as bad a problem as people online are saying it is 😬😬 Your choice will depend on your utility tho 😀 :)

shut up. was thinking of replacing my old 15r2 with this thing, got r2 five yrs ago for 1200 bux on cyber monday. . If its goin to be 4k, i might as well jus build a desktop and keep the r2
I was looking over the Alienware M15 & M17 R3 specs. Everything looks good, but I noticed the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard. Not trying to deter anyone, but if the RAM fails one day it means replacing the motherboard and everything else that's soldered on to it. Sounds expensive, perhaps 60% the cost of a new Laptop?
i just recently bought an alienware m15 r3 300hz 10750h 2070 super and its great and all but the keyboard would get so hot that after playing for around 20 mins the WASD would be almost unbearable to touch. i was wondering if you have the same experience as i have.
I did not. Mine got very warm, but it never got unbearably, painfully, or otherwise uncomfortably hot. I think part of the reason is the flipper motherboard - the heat pipes being directly beneath the keyboard will make the surface hotter than if the heat pipes were on the bottom because the motherboard can shield most of that heat away.
NGL. I jumped the gun when buying my GE66 Raider. I mean it's amazing thermals, fan noise isn't too loud but now I'm like bruh, these are lighter and I should have gotten the r3 or the 7i :(
RIP. If it's within 14 days, you should be able to exchange it for a different laptop. But yeah I didn't expect the 7i or the m15 r3 to be as good as they are.
I suppose the only problem is that. Configurations from USA and UK are way different and the prices have a massive difference. And the GE66 was on sale at 1599 so I figured it was a bargain 🤣🤣 getting a full rtx 2070 at that price. The r3 on the US site is 1600 for the RTX 2060 but in the UK we have to pay I think it was 2300 for that card lol. Very unfair
The 7i has quality control issues big time, and there's many reviewers and users on Reddit who have had poor thermals on that machine. The m15 R3 doesn't have Optimus on non-G-Sync variant which means the battery just sucks ass plus it has a flipped motherboard with soldered RAM and WiFi card, if anything gets damaged down the road you're going have to get the whole motherboard replaced which costs a ton plus maintenance such as thermal repasting is going to be tough. The GE66 Raider has none of these issues, not to say it doesn't have issues of its own but its a fantastic purchase.
as some one who has expirence with this keyboard . yes it is fine but it is open to the intire insides (so anything everything falls into the insides no protection plate) then when crumbs tobbacco dust or anything i mean anything (warranty is voided) after watching the intire video if the best part of this pc is the keyboard forget it you have got nothing but a failed warrenty (fact)
Just got the asus zephyrus m15 that has the 2070 max q. Similar specs for $1379. Considering returning it for the 2070 super though in the Alienware. It costs 1,899 though!

Well I had the m15 r2 the heating is a big issue because it leads to fps drops and game crashing

Just got this for myself yesterday best decision I’ve made in a while.
Wonderful vid, I would’ve totally bought this machine a few months ago on the back of this review while I was researching it. However, the stuff I did look up on this laptop gave me a couple questions as to your opinions on the thermals and opening the laptop up. (Please note, just a couple of my thoughts! I am also a huge fan of your style of not always reviewing with the highest tier gpu available, thank you for doing this)
Reading your comment on your thermal measurements helps put it more into perspective, but I still can’t help but disagree slightly. First, I still think having the cpu temps running in the high 90’s when it’s being pushed to as far as it can go does not bode well for longevity. I’ll admit, it’s highly unlikely that people will buy this thing to run Prime95 24/7, and the gaming temps are pretty decent, but that leads me to number 2
These temps are with the 2060 config.
Notebookcheck: www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-Super-Max-Q-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.459206.0.html

One thing I may not have mentioned is I always do thermal testing with the fans at full speed (if manual fan control if available), or I enable the performance power profile if available.
Your review sealed the deal for me - I just picked mine up today! Thanks so much for your thorough review, you addressed some things I hadn't seen elsewhere and you helped me make a great decision. 😄

Loved your honest review.

My asus laptop recently died and I was wondering if this is a superior laptop or something close to it
i just recently bought an alienware m15 r3 300hz 10750h 2070 super and its great and all but the keyboard would get so hot that after playing for around 20 mins the WASD would be almost unbearable to touch. i was wondering if you have the same experience as i have.
@@InfinityLabsTech Thoughts on Asus rog strix g17?
Very unfair
@@InfinityLabsTech yeah IKR. Literally over reddit it was such a 50 50 thing, in terms of thermals/hinge, for the 7i
The 7i has quality control issues big time, and there's many reviewers and users on Reddit who have had poor thermals on that machine.
