just watched this video on pretty much the exact same computer (M17x R3) bought it in 2011. i thought it was a good idea to buy a very good laptop so i'll be golden for a good 5 or 6 years, and here i am, 9 years later still gaming on it.😀 hallowed be alienware.
I love the aesthetic of alienware laptops of that "vintage" because I personally love that highly gamer design, the rgb and everything in between, and I don't really care about the weight of a laptop, as long as its got the performance to back it up.
My 6 year old "Acel Shitspire" 5742 is still doing OK 6 years after purchase, despite being roasted for a good 5 years with overheating on the CPU. I'll have to take the mobo out and have a look.
their 17 2014 model actually the best slap it with 4940mx and gtx 1070, pretty much will destroy any current laptop easily in cooling/performance. i owned the 15 2015 but still looking 17 2014 at decent price
Dude I got damn near the same laptop since 2012. My brother passed it down to me and boy has it been through some hell. Multiple OS changes from Vista, Linux, and Win 8. Though just recently Ol' Betsy is starting to go out on me. The battery life is practically non-existent. Gets hot as all hell. Starts becoming unresponsive after repeated startups with no hard shutdown. Then the worst part, the AC Adaptor is really starting to make some popping noises. Like it would set my house on fire if I went to sleep with it plugged in. That and some keys stopped working as well. Keys "6789 and O" don't work. The old girl still got some life to her, and after watching this video may just me some ways to get her back on her feet. The clogged CPU vents for one are definitely an issue. The fact you can replace the graphics card is a neat feature. Could probably replace it with one of my brother's old graphics cards. Pretty much just gotta replace the battery, Power Adaptor, and clean up the CPU and she should be good to go again. I remember playing Mass Effect 3 on her, but now she can mainly run Flash games. I know it would be better just to replace her with a newer, slimmer laptop, but shes what I use during downtime in my room. The PC rig my brother built me, a Thermaltake core x9 I call Big Bess, has to stay in the living room. Can't really drag the big girl to my room when I'm done for the night. Anyway, sorry for typing a lot, just had to share my story since most these issues popped up last night. I don't know how I came across this video but I'm glad I did cause it could get Ol' Betsy back in shape.
Robbaz Corgi Jesus man, I've been fairly gentle with mine with it first came out. All keys work as far as I know. No popping noise from my power supply. Then again I probably wouldn't hear it considering how loud the damn thing is under load. I always keep it plugged in though.
José Garcia i found a by seller called (defective) laptop for 250$. As the seller didn't include the power adapter i bought myself a power adapter. And once it arrived it worked perfectly fine and nothing was defective. The issue was that the seller didn't use a matching power adapter or a not operating one. I bought the adapter for just 30$ on ebay and it powered the laptop on without issues. The specs of the laptop are: i7 4710HQ, 16GB ddr3, GTX 980M 4GB, 4K Touchscreen display, 256gb ssd, 1tb hdd, model is alienware 15 r1.
M18x R2 is still ouperform Alienware 18(which is the successor for it) though especially when you upgrade this thing too GTX 1060. Same with M17x R4 is still out perform its successor, Alienware 17 R3 lol. This was when Alienware built their laptop property to make it upgradable and not soldering them on. Nowadays, Alienware went to BGA and that's why it's crap for gaming laptop.
Eurcom recently announced that they will be building smaller 10 series GPUS that will fit most of the casings in gaming laptops. As for the 17 R3, they were able to fit the gtx 1070. In all honesty, I would recommend buying a old 18 alienware rather than the 17, because of the spacing on the motherboard. This will allow for future gpu components to possibly fit within the laptop. As for the correct bios regarding the laptop, I recommend checking out notebookforums to find working bios for the upgraded gpu.
+Psivewri I personally bought an Alienware M17x R4 off ebay a couple months back, It is the same thing but with an nVidia GeForce GTX 660m. It was $450 and came with an Alienware mouse, Backpack and mouse pad. I ended up selling all the extras for a nice cool $50. So $400 for this isn't bad. Some things to keep in mind is you must give the laptop some decent airflow or your GPU will overheat fast and get to about 96c, It will back off and for the next few minutes you will be running off 4 - 10fps while the GPU cools off. The 660m GPU does fine for me at the moment but like video says you can upgrade it, I personally will be upgrading to a 780m which will be about 200% faster. And you will most likely need a new battery cause after 5 years don't expect the OEM battery to hold its original charge. If you don't want to do that just keep it plugged in. My pros and cons about the laptop. Pros : • Good feeling keyboard with nice colors, Doesn't just feel like a cheap laptop keyboard. • Media buttons on the top right are awesome and I tend to use them a lot. • Has a full sized keyboard • Looks sleek, When the laptop screen is up it doesn't look fat. The style of the laptop fits the size perfectly. • RGB So you can have all the rainbow goodness you can desire. • You can upgrade the GPU and other things. • 2 ports for 2.5" SSD or HardDrives and I believe an m.2 • Neat power button, It flickers as the Hard Drive spins. • Very nice loud speakers. • Selection of ports and even a method to lock your laptop if you wanted to feel more safe at a coffee shop or something.. Cons : • If you have big hands like me then your palm will tend to hit the corner of the trackpad so you might hit/shoot something you don't want to while gaming. This can be countered via Alien Touch in the AlienFX area where you can adjust the sensitivity and something for "accidental palm hits" • Trackpad isn't the greatest • Heavy • My power cord slips out easily (Might just be mine) • The fans are noisy Overall I highly recommend doing this. It worked out so well for me cause I am at the moment traveling in an RV traveling. Also thanks Psivewri cause I will new be opening it up and getting all the dust out & reapplying paste. :) Thumbs up from me and I hope this helped anyone.
Well, Recently I upgraded to an Alienware 15 R3 & sold my old one for $675. On Fortnite 1080 w/ medium Anti Aliasing & everything else low I was getting 50 -60fps, Now with the update I would think it would get 70 - 80 on those settings. Keeping in mind I have a 1600 x 900 screen and not 1920x1080p but I don't think that would change much. If you can find one with a better AMD card it wont cost much more & will run much faster. If you're curious about the new one I paid $970 & it has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060-6GB, i7-6700HQ, 120Hz screen and 8GB DDR4. Mint condition and was a steal :o
When talking about the fan sound, you need to state whether or not the computer is idling(just web browsing or simple document editing), or is at full load i.e gamming
Great video! I just bought an Alienware M17X R4. It has gtx 675m, i7 3740qm, 12Gb ddr3 1600MHz, 32Gb m-sata, 500Gb HDD for only 172.63 USD and that is including the shipping cost.
Seriously considering buying this laptop if not the M17x R3 because of this video. Would be awesome to have some gaming portability. Also you can put cards like the GTX 880M 8GB in this laptop as well as the R3. Probably the path I'm going to take with my gaming PC upgrade. Awesome video!
Kevin Akerberg Try to find a Dell 15 7559 instead. I see one on eBay right now (in the us) for only $540. Has a 960m, which is pretty close to the alienwares
I've found some pretty good deals on GTX 780M laptops, which are faster than both the 7970m and 960m, and the 960m is actually beaten by the 7970m by about 20% difference. Also I find the alienware's upgradability very valuable, and an OEM Dell machine seems like it wouldn't be as modular as something like an Alienware or a Sager, two brands I've been looking into
Kevin Akerberg I believe the Dell is actually more modular. It only takes 1 screw to get to the internals, and you can get to the ram, ssd, and battery from there. I just thought that the Dell was a much better value compared to the alienware. Alienware is around $750 used. Which is about $200 more for 20% better performance. Not sure how expensive the 780m laptops are though
Jonah Nguyen I’ve found an Alienware 17 with an i7-4700MQ, 16GB of RAM, 128GB SSD + 750GB HDD, and a GTX 780M for $600. Not too bad especially for an Alienware
Yup bartered for an Alienware 17 r2. Had to clean it out and replace the thermal paste, battery, and charger. Runs like a dream now. Added an m.2 ssd and I'm waiting on my 16gb of ram. After everything I'll have paid around 600$ with value. Runs everything on high and above.
Great video, but I think any laptop over 3 yrs old + just isn't worth investing into unless you absolutely love the machine but realistically they just aren't made to last anymore. Spending $600 and knowing it could fail or cost more in the long run without any warranty just seems a waste.
Jason Morel You don’t know what your talkin about mate...those Alienware’s will wup anything out there if you know how to install correct cpu like 940intel and 980m nvidia in M15xr2 for example. If you have never done this then it explains your bias.
Tom Tapp but the cost of those upgrades are costs that aren't worth what you get a old cpu and 980m, which if you were smart might aswell put a couple of hundreds more and get a new machine with newer gen cpu and gtx 1060 upwards in terms of value for your dollar its way better and your covered if it fails for 1-2 years and your getting 2x upwards performance, better then wasting a couple hundred and not having any guarantee on life span. Pure economics mate at the end of the day, its using your money wisely. If you feel upgrading old tech is the way good for you and best of luck.
Jason Morel that’s the very reason it’s worth it. You go buy your “new” msi or rog that has the cpu and gpu soldered to the motherboard and you have to run W 10. Get that new msi and when you burn up that GPU ....go buy another one. That’s how those companies are playing you “mate”....you can’t change/REPLACE cpu or gpu. Gotta buy new motherboard or new PC. Alienware and Sager lets you upgrade cpu like a 940xm that you can overclock because it’s not locked, to 3.8 mhz. Upgrade GPU to 980m that will rock those newer gpus that are soldered to MB. Got it now? Coming from someone who likes potatoes
As someone who's used one of these machines for about a year, I can say that It's actually a surprisingly viable machine for gaming, and I even edit videos on it. I have however had to replace one RAM module, and my SSD, as they were as old as the laptop, and failing. With that said, that wasn't hard for me to diagnose, and fix, and the potential upgraded power for the machine is surprisingly high, if you're willing to do some modifications for a later mxm gpu. In addition, temps are quite good, I can run my 675m overclocked to 700 mhz and still easily stay under 70 C with an adjusted fan curve. The 3630QM is still a decent but not exceptional cpu, but the best option for the laptop is the 3940XM, which is an impressive cpu, even today. EDIT: I am now running a Quadro p4000 in it, which falls between the 1060, and 1070. Having a laptop of that performance level, especially with how good it's cooling and keyboard are, nowadays is actually really good for the total cost.
Got the same laptop for $200 USD, slapped an additional 250GB SSD and a 4GB GTX 860M GPU, and am so proud of this rig it isn't even funny. It can handle pretty much anything I can throw at it. Even with the Stock 660M GPU, it is incredibly capable for a now 7 year old laptop, it will handle pretty much any modern game at medium to low settings, and any game id say 2015 and back at higher settings. GET ONE! Their really nice for upgrading due to the stupid amount of ports on the rig, the additional memory bay inside the computer, and overall very modualized design of the circuitry inside the rig (Hense the beefy scaleform and INSANE near 10 lbs weight, which is about double the average laptop weight.) This is definitely a rig that pushes the limits of what a Laptop is capable of if given some care and a few upgrades here and there.
Had one of this ... even older model,2820qm with gtx460m. Used for over 7 years intensively, changed its HDD, RAM, GPU (gtx680m) thus coolibg module; poured water onto it and into it, dried out and work fine. Played pubg on it, running ok. Besides, it has a3D screen which i used for a while on WOW MOP...impressive
Looking at pre 2018 Alienware laptops, one can really appreciate the build in and out. To this day the other flagship companies still are missing half of what AW offered years ago. Yeah they are heavy as shit, which is why they have that solid feel that very few laptops offer. Works for me as im not mobile with mine, if you are...defo AWs are not for you nor your back. RGB lighting can be a bit too much for some but you can turn it off. Keyboards feel great throughout the models and have perfectly uniformly diffused LED lighting.
Just came across this video.. I just picked up (in Feb. of 2023) an Alienware M17X R3 with an intel i7 2860qm and Nvidia GeForce gtx 560m with 16gb of ram for $80.. just upgraded to 32gb 1600mhz ddr3, and dual 1tb ssds, and also have a gtx 580m with heat sink on the way (for another $80). I love it’s look and it still runs quite decent. Only two issues with it so far for me.. had to use a different touchpad driver to get “normal” two finger scrolling in windows 10 since the R3 was windows 7 based, vs the R4 like in this video being W8 based, and the rubberized coating is kinda messed up on parts of the palm rest. Had I seen this vid first, I definitely would have made the same decision. These, while older are pretty cool still.
I did and dont regret it at all. around the 2015 holiday season i got a 2010 m15x with a i7 and it was perfect for what i wanted until i could build a high end pc. i highly recommend a fan tray to have it sit on to cool it. finally got a 1080 and ryzen 5 system last week. huge step up
as pc guy since i was old enough to use dos... the first thing you should do with a used laptop is to replace the stock thermal paste along with heat pads with copper heat-sinks 20 degree drop in operating temps in game css
I actually bought the m17 r4 I'm 2012 for $2000 brand new and it's still working today. I have a 1tb SSD and a 2td HDD. Unfortunately 8gb of RAM and still running the stock gtx 660m there are games I'm unable to play still such as pubg and re7 but for the most part, she's still working well on most games.
Also managed to find one with i7 3720mq And 2x 7970 ... Had a same problem with thermal paste, so I used grizzly conductonaut on CPU and both GPUs... Temps down 20+°c and in firestrike I got graphics score 10226, physics 10021 and combined 2890 no OC ... And then I gave it to my brother 😁totally worth the 💰 for less then 400usd
I bought an Alienware 14 for $230 used with 8GB of RAM, 750GB, and Intel i7-4700MQ, and a GTX 750 mobile buying locally on Offer Up. I'd say go for it if specs are good.
im still rocking this laptop..32gb ram and i upgraded the gpu to a gtx 765m.. got 2 2.5 inch ssd's in it..it keeps up just fine and has a couple years still left in it..its a damn tank and i love it
Just bought a new laptop last year. Kinda regret it. Next time (perhaps in 3-4 years), I'm going to buy second hand laptop. While I'm quite familiar with computer stuff, I'm not that tech-savvy either. Opening a laptop, cleaning all the vent, and re-pasting the CPU is something I don't really want to do. So perhaps I'm going to buy it at a store that specialized in 2nd hand laptop. It may be a bit expensive, but those stores already take cares all things like cleaning, repasting, checking for any damaged parts, and re-installing fresh windows.
Caseko CSK build ur own computer cheaper and it is fully upgradable watch how to build a computer. Idk why u buy laptops laptops suck there only for portablity
I have a full tower desktop, quite powerful too... but the power consumption is big (obviously) and the electric bill rises... It's alright when I playing AAA PC games or doing heavy duty stuff... But most of the time I'm just browsing the internet, watching movies, and all other light stuff. So I want to buy another computer with very light power consumption but still capable doing some medium stuff (like photoshop or sketchup)... and while at that, this time I want something that somewhat portable. So another desktop albeit the green one is kinda redundant. I'm also considering mini PC or something like that.
Caseko CSK Buy from a Windows certified refurbusher, I think that's what you call them... And yea it's true my desktop/ gaming pc uses way to much power, so much that I can't stay in my room with my door closed for more that 3 hours because it gets really hot :'v
That is wow... My PC doesn't get too hot nor drawing too much power. It's working normally. I just want something that use less power. It's overkill to use gaming PC for just daily browsing or watching youtube... and it's also killing my wallet (electric bill).
Draft Horse is my M18x R2. Same generation. One thing to look out for is dimming of the lights with age, worn connectors, and failing fans. Both models are very desktop like to the point it should be practical to upgrade the chipset.
one thicc box will win to some and "new pristine", budget-friendly to some others. It's gonna be win-win; of course, depends how you look at/define "winning". Period.
i got a alienware 17 laptop from 2013 now it has intel i7 4th gen and i upgraded the video card to 980m 8gb and 32gb memory runs amazing for 1080p ultra gaming
I still have my M14X and haven't had a hiccup since the day I got it 7 years ago. Very reliable and durable if you care for it. Like keeping vents clear. Bought it for refurbished from Dell online outlet store for almost half original price.
Psivewri Can this old alienware laptop still can run the latest game today such as PUBG, Fortnite, or any large requirement game that we see now which these game need a high spec to run it? Will these old Alien Ware can do that anymore ????
i did not get a secondhand alienware but i did get a secondhand Razer blade 2016, it was the best purchase ive made paying only roughly 900-1000AUD on it instead of the full price
I picked up a Gigabyte P27 with 16 GB RAM Geoforce 840GTX 2GB, I7 4810MQ chip full HD 1080 17 inch screen, 128GB SSD for $500, as stated battery life is rubbish but it is a gaming Laptop so thats to be expected, BUT it boots Windows 10 in around 8 seconds :), weights in at brick like 4kg or just on 9 pounds. Bang for the buck you can't beat a old gaming laptop, blows away newer laptops using low voltage chips and without dedicated graphics cards. It known as the BEAST in our house, its just demented FAST
Im currently using a used Alienware I got for a great price on eBay, great specs, runs games great. Only thing is the battery is not amazing and sometimes theres a script screen that pops up. Other than those two things, a worthwhile investment!
As long as my laptop has Nvidia inside, and a backup ac adaptor(because I'm not running my games off of just battery, that's torture)I'm good. The fps doesnt have to go head to head, as long as it runs and stays cool.
I think you mean 48 degrees Fahrenheit. 0 degrees Celsius is at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, so you need to subtract 32 degrees when you convert them since it is a change of 27 degrees C and not that the CPU is running at 27 degrees.
Kinda makes me feel good hearing how much you paid. Scored same spec toshiba laptop for $50 australian because the screen was cracked. New screen $80 on ebay put it in myself and changed hdd to ssd. Was only 8gb ram but still 1 slot left to put another 8gb ram stick.
I bought my Allienware M17x in 2011-2012 and It still works today. OFC for new games I use it on minimum and I work on this laptop. My work involves using Archicad 22. All I want to know if I can replace the CPU and GPU on it.
Recently, i bought a custom built pc for less than $150. The specs:Intel Q82-- Quad Core processor and a radeon 5750 hd 1gb gpu, it is a very budget pc and it runs csgo in 200-220 fps. so i think its pretty good
Gotta say, love my Alienware 15 r3, but to anyone who doesn't like the price tag, this is definitely a better option, most of the alienware stuff you see in current gen is here, only thing the new ones have is the higher refresh-rate displays and the graphics amplifier, as well as better power efficiency and is ALOT lighter.
other than the weaker GPU, which can be upgraded with an external solution, the rest of the hardware is decent, considering the price of getting a new or even used equivalent build today.
I know this is old but I got a M17x R3 for $40 it was missing one key, the bottom panel, bad gpu and no cpu and cooler, I have spend $110 on it so for $150 it is fully functional it isn’t a mind blowing deal but I like rebuilding laptops
I still use alienware m17x r4 but upgraded the gpu to gtx 980 and added another drive as 512GB SSD for windows and games.. changed thermal paste and replaced the gpu fan with a aftermarket version, have bit more airflow and noise😂 but still rock solid.
No, I have an Alienware MX18 R2, the graphics card no longer works, Dell have told me they no longer support parts for my laptop and it is no longer covered by warranty as they only offer 5 year warranty max
Just read your comment and typing this on my New Generation M17 with 9980HK, RTX 2080. Thought about getting the Area 51 until this came out and I realized it has the exact same power and weighs much less. Oh and it also has a 144Hz screen nice laptop you got though...
I still use my Asus G50vt. Windows 10, x9100 running at 3.4ghz built in Turbo Extreeme at 55-65 degrees (I can overclock to 3.9ghz and still operate, but what for?. 256SSD. 320HD (2slots). 8GB RAM. Yes is VERY old, from 2009 but it does everything that I need.(i play gta 5 no problem). I use a pad/fan when I game. I love that its OLD, awesome display with Daylight settings in windows. I do ALL of my work on this laptop. I will buy a laptop similar to the one on this video next. I mean things are so fast today that a 5 year old different will not matter unless you're a serious gamer. These gaming laptops are bad ass. I actually gave my newer faster Dell Inspiron to my brother because it looks like crap and the keyword feels cheap, even though the processor and graphics card were WAY better that what i have now. And yeah, this laptop holds memories. Passed around from family to family over the years and eventually made its way back to the original donor, me. Guess they all thought it was to "old". It was stock, so i guess it probably was. Anywas did about $100 worth up upgrades (processor upgrade was now at $11!), SSD at $50!. This whole rant is just to tell you guys that you can still get what you need out of an older laptop. Don't buy the newest just because its got the best specs. Love my solid, old, cool looking G50v!
I did it and the lesson is don't. It's way too heavy and thick to be carried around and the thermals are as bad as you can expect. I sold it a few months later. You'd better off building a portable itx system.
Of course, I own an Alienware m17x R3 with an upgraded graphics card of Radeon 560X 4gb and wow, it's honestly just as good if not better than a lot of starter gaming laptops of today. Just upgrade the RAM, HD's to SSD's and graphics card if possible then you are gtg.
Hi, I have a M15X that I bought new about nine years back. Not for gaming but for graphics design. And it still does an awesome job in handling the demanding software I use. It came with Windows 7 pro installed but I upgraded it to Windows 10 pro which definitely improved it's performance. About every two year, I clean out those vents but never thought on cleaning up the CPU heat sink. Can you please let me know what you use to clean it with, and what kind of thermal paste to use?
i've got a simillar laptop, a lenovo Y580 for 400$ with an i7-3610qm, gtx 660m, a mSATA 512GB samsung 850 evo,a 1tb toshiba graphics and the same RAM. Runs great and weighs 6.2lbs
I have the m17x r2, it's really a overkill notebook back then, it has a Core i7 740qm and 2 Radeon HD5870 in Crossfire, i am also using an Corsair 120Gb SSD and a 500Gb HDD, and a 24Gb mSATA SSD. It's really big and heavy. It also can be upgraded to a i7 940xm and 2x Radeon R9 290m, but it needs a better power brick

When this laptop was made ?
Robbaz Corgi
Jesus man, I've been fairly gentle with mine with it first came out. All keys work as far as I know. No popping noise from my power supply. Then again I probably wouldn't hear it considering how loud the damn thing is under load. I always keep it plugged in though.
Wow thats a heart warming story

Always good to see more Aussie RUclipsrs!
Just bought an Alienware 14 with an i7-4700MQ, 16Gb RAM, and a GTX765m for £220. Needed a bit of cleaning, but it was still a good deal.
PHYSX_YT damn that's a good find.. I just found a ROG G750JW with the exact same specs for 499 US dollars. But with 20gb ram.
thats awesome
WOW... Thats a deal
Pros :
• Good feeling keyboard with nice colors, Doesn't just feel like a cheap laptop keyboard.
• Media buttons on the top right are awesome and I tend to use them a lot.
• Has a full sized keyboard
• Looks sleek, When the laptop screen is up it doesn't look fat. The style of the laptop fits the size perfectly.
• RGB So you can have all the rainbow goodness you can desire.
• You can upgrade the GPU and other things.
• 2 ports for 2.5" SSD or HardDrives and I believe an m.2
• Neat power button, It flickers as the Hard Drive spins.
• Very nice loud speakers.
• Selection of ports and even a method to lock your laptop if you wanted to feel more safe at a coffee shop or something..
Cons :
• If you have big hands like me then your palm will tend to hit the corner of the trackpad so you might hit/shoot something you don't want to while gaming. This can be countered via Alien Touch in the AlienFX area where you can adjust the sensitivity and something for "accidental palm hits"
• Trackpad isn't the greatest
• Heavy
• My power cord slips out easily (Might just be mine)
• The fans are noisy
Overall I highly recommend doing this. It worked out so well for me cause I am at the moment traveling in an RV traveling.
Also thanks Psivewri cause I will new be opening it up and getting all the dust out & reapplying paste. :)
Thumbs up from me and I hope this helped anyone.
Joshua Pile get a 7970m not a 780
Thanks so much LOL, You just saved me about $100. If I bought the AMD one and sold my other one it would only cost about $30 - 40.
2 months late, I know, but what modern games have you tested on it and how well do they run?
Hi, how does it perform ? Thx 👍🏼
@@Shoo7er09 I sold it a short while after buying it. Sorry. Now the performance is bad for todays games.
@@P4ND3R550N ahh, thanks 👍🏼

Jason Morel nonsense
Tom Tapp clearly coming from someone with no experience enjoy your potatoes :)
Nice video! I managed to find an m17x r3 for $240 with a GTX 580m. Cleaned dust and replaced the thermal paste and it runs amazing
I agree! I own an Alienware 15 R2 and still works like a champ today.
HDMI in AND out?
THATS CRAZY, thAT MEANS YOU CAN PLAY PS4 OR XBOX ON THIS TOO :O
Craftah Cool I've got to try that :)
Psivewri tbh I wish my mid range hp laptop for gaming had this ;w; then I wouldnt have to get another monitor in my setup!
Yes.. I've been a fan for a while but hardly anyone does it now
ipeters61 yep, I used to have this laptop before I overclocked the gpu too far and killed it. It was awesome that it could be a screen
EDIT:
I am now running a Quadro p4000 in it, which falls between the 1060, and 1070. Having a laptop of that performance level, especially with how good it's cooling and keyboard are, nowadays is actually really good for the total cost.
Is it still valid today?
I remember wanting to buy one of these back in 2012, now I still kind of want it
Got the same laptop for $200 USD, slapped an additional 250GB SSD and a 4GB GTX 860M GPU, and am so proud of this rig it isn't even funny.
Wow great deal! Did u have to do any mods for the GTX 860M? Also, do u know if it runs Windows 7?
you could probably get the same/similar performance with a 1st gen i7 equipped with a gtx 960, or 750 ti, and i built mine for $200.

Caseko CSK wtf do u bit mine with that pc

As long as my laptop has Nvidia inside, and a backup ac adaptor(because I'm not running my games off of just battery, that's torture)I'm good. The fps doesnt have to go head to head, as long as it runs and stays cool.
if its cheap enough then yeah , its Alienware !

I bought M17X R3 in 2011. I changed the battery and video card.It is still working!!!

Oh and Windows 10 upgrade was Free KABOOOOOOM!
I did it and the lesson is don't. It's way too heavy and thick to be carried around and the thermals are as bad as you can expect. I sold it a few months later. You'd better off building a portable itx system.
Audio drivers are a pain in the arse though thanks to Windows 10 and i'm on reflow 5 of the gpu now... Still works like a charm though
So we saw the synthetic benchmarks, but how does the Dell compare to the Alienware in the games you tested?
Hi, I have a M15X that I bought new about nine years back. Not for gaming but for graphics design. And it still does an awesome job in handling the demanding software I use. It came with Windows 7 pro installed but I upgraded it to Windows 10 pro which definitely improved it's performance. About every two year, I clean out those vents but never thought on cleaning up the CPU heat sink. Can you please let me know what you use to clean it with, and what kind of thermal paste to use?
Mechanical keyboard? Was this the last Alienware with one of those? Also, what's the best gpu you could upgrade to in this?
Excelente video, muchas gracias!!! encontre mas de lo que esperaba !!!
i've got a simillar laptop, a lenovo Y580 for 400$ with an i7-3610qm, gtx 660m, a mSATA 512GB samsung 850 evo,a 1tb toshiba graphics and the same RAM.
I still have one from 2013 and it runs so smoothly
can I have it
