  • Join me as I delve into the maze of varied police vehicle designs and colours, questioning the need for such diversity as well as its impact on public perception and emergency response.
This video idea stemmed from a recent conversation I had with some active police officers in Florida and some general comments on pervious videos.

Citizens should educate themselves on what police cars look like where they live and what kinds they can encounter. The Internet is helpful to find out what police cars look like where you live.
Black and white police cars are a good standard colour to distinguish them from other cars.

    Another great video Randy... thanks.
I really loved the yellow cars back in the day, you could see them coming. I like the idea of black and white vehicles. I don't like the branding on the sides. It's different if they have their city crest on it but not all the colours. This is a first responder vehicle, not a banner waving vehicle.
I love the idea of them all looking the same simply because when you're in a different county or country they're easily identifiable.

We'd love to hear about police uniforms, Mr. Randy. What are their advantages and disadvantages? I've heard many stories from different police officers, and we're eager to hear yours. For example, how do you deal with heavy equipment when you need a restroom break or have to change your uniform? Do you have any interesting stories from your time as a police officer? Personally, when I'm working, I try to limit my water intake to avoid taking too many breaks. Those who work on the road or patrol likely face challenges regarding restroom breaks.

Police vehicles all have the word "Police" written on them which is good enough. I also wonder if the vehicles themselves are bulletproof, stronger built to take the impact of crashes and can also be used as a weapon if needed. The design alone should be distinguishable no matter what for the public to say "Yep. That's a cop car" and also fool proof to make sure the cop is the only person who can use and drive the car. Imagine the cop can only be opened by the handprint or the fingerprint or the badge....THAT would be sick.

I was born and raised in California all my life and I have always seen the color black and white as police cars in my state. Some rural parts of California are all white police cars with big police or sheriff decals. But that is like 200 miles away from the major cities. Whenever I travel out of state, and see a police car with a black and white paint job, it makes me feel like I’m back in California lol. I like seeing the state that I travel to with their own looks of their police cars

I grew up in a country where all the police cars had exactly the same design. No matter where you are there was never confusion what that car was.
I really like the style of high visibility the British n police cars have, even if they have color variations, and different forces some are blue, white silver or black, the blue and yellow checkered pattern stands out as a police vehicle, and it's not permitted to imitate the emergency vehicle pattern for business such as traffic lawyers or private security which can easily lead to confusion.
I have seen private security vehicles that are perfect copies of a police vehicle, even with light bars, they light out yellow light, but when they are off, they have no distinctive color.
I think there is merits to standardize the police vehicle looks.
Also when I was in Texas I noticed multiple private dark colored vehicles with blue and red lights in construction zones, I asked my friend, they are not police but private security or private traffic control, which adds even more to the confusion.

I think the key to each department's livery is that they all try to be identifiable. There are outliers, especially for unmarked traffic units, however most of the liveries in the GTA are easy to distinguish from general traffic. There also seems to be a trend by different departments (Toronto, York, and Ottawa) in a clear two colour livery. Barrie's livery is especially easy to identify.
As someone that has an odd fascination of cop cars, I enjoy the fact that each department has its own livery, but I can see the benefits of having a unified design across a given area. If I had to choose one, I'd follow Barrie's footstep with the British style of blue and high vis yellow.
The cars can definitely be intimidating. Toronto seemed to acknowledge that with their MCIT units that had the stock rims, a lighter colour, and no push bar in the front. However, they don't look as nice in my opinion, lol.

Kingston Police, is a prime example of how to switch to make things less confusing for the public, we went from Black and whites, to a white with blue and red "pepsi cars" back to Black and White as of April 25th. I think it's to also bring a sense of simple-ness to the vehicles to make them more identifiable.

In Canada, most shopping malls feature similar stores such as Walmart, Loblaws, Superstore, Dollarama, and many more. Fire trucks across different countries look alike because they are designed to carry specific equipment, hence their uniform appearance. The same applies to ambulances; they're meant to fulfill a specific function, so their design remains consistent. However, police cars vary, displaying different logos or markings. I suggest standardizing police car design and markings, akin to OPP vehicles. Perhaps they could include the province's logo but maintain a uniform color and shape.

I can identify a police car without issue because they are either Fords, GMs or Chryslers and the obvious things like a push bar, lights or antennas but I think there should be a "general" look for those who aren't car savvy. If you look at California the majority of police cars are black and white (Think LAPD, LASD or SFPD) and that's the norm all throughout. Should be the same here.

I think the ability to customize colour schemes is a benefit for local identity.
I do think the themed vehicles (like Durhams recruiting car) are not a great idea. While I have never objected to the intention, some of the cars often don’t look like police cars. I once thought a Durham car was a security company until I saw the rather small “POLICE” label on it.
You may recall the case where a charge was thrown out involving the OPP because the word Police was not distinct on their uniform. That’s a consideration as well
Whatever the scheme, it should be consistent and clear within the municipality

I’ve never thought about it this deeply. I’m happy with the move in Ontario towards having the typical black and white or a spinoff (e.g Ottawa/York’s blue). Black and white is the stereotypical here just like Europe has the stereotypical battenburg. I think that should be the standard because I’ve seen some very oddly coloured vehicles in my time.

  • @EmmaMcIntyre14

I don't think there would be any benefit for Police vehicles to all look the same because of the nature of police work. Take for instance ghost cars, why does any Police service need them? I'm sure there are several very good reasons why the Police would not want to tip off or alert a criminal of their presence, kind of like Ninja's. I'm suprised when I see some people pulled over in Peel or York region, and it's not a traditional Police vehicle, like a Charger, but rather some SUV or truck that I cannot readily identify and then I wonder, and then I think it really benefits the Police because you can catch people off guard. The rooftop lights, and the "Police" decal on the doors are the two features that make the vehicles distinguishable to most people. However, as you mentioned not all Police vehicles have those rooftop lights as they are located someplace else, such as ghost cars. But I still think it still benefits the Police to have randomness as opposed to oneness or "militarization" as you put it in terms of the color of vehicle etc. I remember when I used to live in Vancouver, every Police vehicle in Vancouver was either a Chevy Caprice or a Ford Crown Victoria back in the 80's and early 90's. The vehicles were more "homogonous" back then, but today, who know's what make and model the Police have in their arsenal, and probably for good reasons. I wouldn't want to know what kinds of vehicles the Police had, because it simply keeps everyone in the general public honest in terms of obeying the rules and the laws. Only a criminal or organized crime would want to know explicitly who has what and make and model, and color of Police cars. There ought not to be full transperancy on behalf of any Police service to reveal colors, or makes and models to the general public as it may compromise the nature of Police work. The random aspect works well for Police. Appreciate your service and posts Officer Arsenault, thanks for keeping our communities safe!

Never thought about it before TBH. And I travel through Barrie, South Simcoe and York Region alot! Barrie has 2 different styles ( plus a few outgoing white Chargers ), South Simcoe have had Blue and White for years and might be changing that, and YRP is in the midst to changing to Blue and White from the White with red and blue stripes. Add the OPP into the mix with their black and white units! I think I like the Blue and White best as, well "Boys in Blue" old saying about coppers. But OPP should stay B&W...and they drive everything! Chargers, Durangos, Explorers, Tahoes, Suburbans, F150s and more!!

I myself think that all police vehicles should not be the same colour. When travelling down a large highway not that I speed but others do, you are watching for the black and white vehicles. In my town you know what your police vehicle colours. In other towns they are different yes so my point is this, if you are in a different town and you are really not aware the city police car colour. Would people be more likely to be more apt to follow the law or follow rules if you were not aware of the police vehicle. I having had a family member as a police officer when I was young was always in fear of doing something wrong and my parents finding out from my uncle the police officer.

Durham, York, and Peel have been consistent across the board with their branding. RCMP have also been the same for as long as I’ve lived.
Toronto is a mess with its branding. From yellow cars to white cars with a blue and red strip down the side was the most consistent Toronto ever was. If it was a different unit such as courts they just changed POLICE to courts
When Blair came along with his swoosh design it was still relatively the same as police cars had the swoosh and then other units like radio and courts had the red and blue line
Then Saunders came along with the god awful grey on grey design which was quickly Kai-bushed in favour of black and white but since they already had an entire fleet of gun metal grey cars ordered they had to go with grey and white
Now the service is a branding mess of blue and red line, swoosh, grey and white, etc.
When designs are considered they should be mandatory consultation with the province or country “does your colour scheme scale up from a car to a full size cube van etc.
Torontos branding is no longer scalable and is just a mess.
Each city / service should have their own branding but I think there should be rules in place for the longevity of the scheme. A new chief/commissioner shouldn’t be able to rebrand every 4 years. Really only seen this noticeable issue with Toronto…..and a bit of Barrie.

@jasonschlesinger5343 has great point; however my first thought what if you're a tourist, is it the first thing you'll actually look for when travelling to a new area after; hotels, places to visit, schedule and return; when did you spend time to 'educate' yourself on how police look like.
Typically for most tourists I believe that you educate yourself based on what is most familiar (law of number) - However, if you encounter different shapes/colors then it'll quickly be virtually impossible to distinguish - therefore in any emergency you won't probably react just as fast as the cop needs (giving right of way) or searching for one.
I feel like the tone of this video is slightly more biased towards favouring different cop cars and providing a view that you're expecting and perhaps doing this video 'live' in the streets by showing pictures and simplifying the question to actually putting real scenarios in all situations.
In my personal opinion with removing all bias; I believe should be 80% ratio of equal color configuration and the remaining 20% may be different by only changing the sides of the car's 'slogans' as you said ; but no more than 20%. Then within the country should be evaluated; not sure if 50% is justified or 60% justified to be uniform within the entire country?
20% of 'freestyle' with slogans is plenty of room of play; can do it with maybe some screens/LCD but I would make the font (typeform) uniform.
I also think that there should also be a number of cop cars with some kind of feature that you can see like further away; some kind of antenna on the car; with more 'friendly' police who could also take random information (e.i crimes) or be more approachable... (1% of cars as start?)
