Should Police Eat In Public While On-Duty?

  • "Police have nothing better to do", or "Is this is where my tax dollars are going?" - Two of the most common comments from those who see Police they perceive to be taking a break or relaxing while on duty.
Can Police just eat in peace? 😂
My partner and I used to always try and sit down and eat in restaurants instead of just going through the drive through and eating back at the station. Having a high social media presence, I would often post to my different social media channels. Man, the hate I'd get.
When Police eat in local restaurants, it allows them to interact with the public in a relaxed setting. This can ultimately build trust and relationships through spontaneous conversations. Light-hearted chat.
Seeing officers I everyday settings like enjoying a meal can help humanize the badge. It reminds people that Police are individuals with interests and needs, like everyone else. It's a good thing.

I worked as a uniformed letter carrier for ten years and endured that same very nonsense if I ate in a restaurant. When I worked for a city wearing a uniform it was the same nonsense. If you are a uniformed government worker the nonsense is universal. They treat you as non human hence not needing: food, water, or a washroom. We are taxpayers too. Disgusting attitudes. Stay safe!

Some of our naive people assume that police officers are not human beings , they are robots , so they should act like robots. My view point is that there is nothing wrong with eating in a public restaurant with other regular citizens. Neither there is anything wrong if those who’re in power want to act like regular human beings. We’re not our jobs, organizations or buildings , we are normal human beings.

And of course there were a few cry babies who were whining and crying and making a stink about it and it came to a stop… it’s so sad!! There’s nothing wrong for police officers, firefighters or Ems sitting out in public enjoying their meals. Seriously, some people need to give their heads a shake!

I completely understand, having worked in the medical field you had to have an extremely slow shift that you would go through a shift where you got time to eat. Even if you got a break to eat or do your charting, you were interrupted by family or staff. You would get a look or comment. Many many shifts you would not get time in your 12 hours to eat or drink. If I saw you eating I would thank you for your service.

I have no issue with officers eating at restaurants. I have seen officers go to Tim Horton's to have lunch when I lived in Sarnia. There is nothing wrong with that at all. I wish I would see them go to local restaurants here in Peel Region. I would see them do that in Windsor (drop by and order takeout was common there).
I hope the US follows suit. I think some US police services allow that.

I categorically agree with the importance of the police officer eating and taking breaks in a restaurant.
They are also human and have rights just like anyone else. Having a meal break is one of those rights!
The presence in uniform is a deterrent for crime. Their presence alone is doing their job.
And the joke about the tax dollars line... perhaps people need to get their facts straight before wasting others' time with baseless opinions!
I would only be concerned about an officer taking any breaks in a restaurant if they are using their entrusted position to get an advantage over the general public.
Given that nothing of the sort has been mentioned in this video, I have no concerns, and I would like to see police engaging with the public. It's called Community Policing.
