Hello Dr. Stephens, I was hoping you would do an updated video on sunscreens. I have watched your other videos but I have a serious hyperpigmentation problem that has been getting a lot better with your advise on products. I wasn't sure which sunscreens had the blue light protection that would be more helpful for my hyperpigmentation. Thank you so much for suggestion products. You are much appreciated.
Thanks so much! Happy to help🥰
Does blue lights from computer & mobile devices cause hyperpigmentation?
They’re full of alcohol
European sunscreens apparently offer and ficus on higher UVA protection whereas Korean SPFs don't and focus on actives. They might feel nice, but I'm sticking to European. I don't have faith in Korean sunscreens 😮
I wish it was easier to find more affordable options for sunscreen. Often the biggest barrier for me using less sunscreen than I know I should, or not reapplying, or skipping days is because I genuinely can't afford to go through so much! It's difficult enough finding formulas that feel nice on the skin and aren't filled with a bunch of irritants, but getting it at a sustainable price point is nearly impossible. Using the shot glass measurement as a guide, that's, what, an entire ounce to cover your body for a single application on a hot summer's day? It'd take anywhere from a third of the tube to an entire container of sunscreen, depending on the packaging, and that's just not realistic for those of us without the income to drop $20-30 on a regular basis. I want sunscreen to be more accessible so I can take care of my skin the way I should, but circumstances prevent me from doing that.
I use Black Girl Sunscreen "kids" SPF 50 on my face, it's $10 for a 3 oz. tube, it's half the price of the adult version and much less greasy. Equate (Walmart brand) Sunscreen For All Skin Tones spf 50 (8 oz. tube) is less than $6 and leaves me glowing and protected. It's specifically made for people of color.
For one, covering skin with clothing saves me a lot. I use sunscreen on head, neck, and hands (exposed skin)
I agree. That’s why I have a different sunscreen for my face vs my neck/body. I have an expensive sunscreen for my face and a cheap mineral sunscreen for my neck body. This helps somewhat. It would be great if there was a mineral sun spray.
I use a sunhat and umbrella when needed to get that sun up off me.
It really can be expensive! Places like Ross, tjmaxx, Burlington, and Marshall’s have good sunscreens for a lower cost
I have so many friends who are also black and will argue with me that we don’t need to wear sunscreen:.. they even laugh when I say I can’t leave the house until 15 minutes after applying my sunscreen..
These are the same friends who ask me what I do to look so young
😂😂😂 ignorance is a bliss. My people perish for lack of knowledge.
Thanks for the tip to allow time lapse for better absorption and effectiveness. I have sunscreen next to my keys as a reminder to apply, and often I'll apply it just before walking out.
@@tatyanathelisa3045not for long
Yep. All you have to do is watch The Best Man, then watch The Best Man: The Final Chapters to observe how our skin ages. I started wearing sunscreen on a daily basis in my 20s. Although I am nearly the same age as the actresses in those movies, my skin isn’t sagging like theirs. Sunscreen + tretinoin + high quality collagen supplement = the fountain of youth for our skin!
@@HarrisPilton789 that is true! Which high quality supplement do you recommend? There’s so many out there so hard to choose.
Could you do a video on Japanese and Korean sunscreens? They are more affordable than American sunscreens and I would like to try some.
For Korean sunscreen, I’ve yet to find ones that down turn me a ghostly white 💀 I don’t use it anymore, but when I lived there this was a constant struggle so I’d recommend something like Black Girl Sunscreen or anything else instead!
A’PIEU Suncream, Missha Essence, Rohto Skin Aqua UV Gel, Biore are good ones with no white cast. The last two also are water resistant/ have water resistant versions.
I just started using the Biore Aqua Watery Essence sunscreen and I love it! It doesn’t leave a white cast, however some people don’t like that in has alcohol in it.
I use Skin Aqua, which is rated 50+.
Biore watery essence not the watery gel, the watery gel leaves a whites cast, also Nivea super watery gel is excellent, it’s a very light sunscreen
1) Always use sunscreen
2) Use 30+ SPF, with UVA/UVB and visible light coverage, use waterproof sunscreen if doing water activities.
3) Using a sunscreen unique to your skin type, tone, and skin concern. If you want blue light protection include that.
4) Use enough sunscreen and
5)Do not apply expired sunscreen.
6)Use sunscreen daily.
7)Reapply every 2 hours especially if exposed to the sun.
8) Use sunscreen when putting the skin at higher risk, e.g. when using UV lambs.
9) Properly store sunscreen don't put it in hot areas and don't remove it from the original container.
10) Don't for get to apply on the hard to reach areas.
*Bonus: Use sun and UV protective clothing.
My skin has been doing so well since watching all your tips! I kept thinking it was my diet but it was the skincare products I was using! I was eating pretty healthy and was still breaking out. Never did I think it was my products! I also incorporated the cycle syncing and GAME CHANGER!
So happy the videos have been helpful for you🥰
what is the cycle syncing
@@godschild9643 It’s when you sync your skincare needs with your menstrual cycle. I just started and I like it so far. Dr. Alexis’ video on it is here ruclips.net/video/7UPUMcbgFPc/видео.html
I feel like this was the most informative and best video you've ever made. You really packed a lot of details in 1 video, great job 😌
I have black skin and switching to a sunscreen with zinc oxide vs a chemical one was the best thing i ever did 🫡
So happy you found one that works well for you!
Yup!
What do you use? I can't find one that won't make me look like a ghost 👻
@gothbimbo44 try cotz richly tinted-- it is awesome. I also love uv shield tint deep by Neutrogena, it's newer similar to cotz, you just need to let it sit for a minute after rubbing it in
@@bootswithdafurr i personally use the Supergoop Mineral Sheer Screen, IT LEAVES A TINT that many people don’t like but i can live with it because it actually fades after a while (like 20 mins). I also use less than the three finger method but find that it still shields my face and my neck 🤞🏾(I wear it just bare faced, not under any makeup either) my skin cleared up and brightened but i also pair it with a vitamin C serum so that plays a role but i was using the vitamin C long before that but my skin improved once I added that sunscreen.
Sorry for the essay, being as detailed as possible so that you understand what Im doing so if it doesn’t work for you, don’t dismiss it just find something or a way that works for you ❤️ it definitely took trial and error for me to figure out the sunscreen itself and what sunscreen works in general.
Brava! Great video 😁! Btw, the tip about if you don’t like it, you won't use it is right on! 300 years ago the dermatologist I went to for acne said the same thing and I never forgot it because it was so true. Keep up the good work 😉!
I use Supergoop for my body, and Black Girl Sunscreen for my face. I have very sensitive skin, I have been happy with both.
These videos you make are always so helpful! In regards to reapplying, can you please make a video on the different options (sprays, powders, sticks etc.) on how to go about them and those suitable for darker skin? Either because I'm wearing makeup or I'm out and about and rather not touch my face directly, I haven't found a process that doesn't give me a whitecast.
What a blessing you have been to our family as we continue to educate ourselves on proper skin care for our wonderful melanin rich skin. Do you have a few suggestions for lip balms that have sunscreen in their formula?
If we are ever in your area, I will be sure to book an appointment if you are accepting new patients!! 🥰
You are the best teacher hands down for protecting our skin especially as black women!
Hi Dr.A, you are a God send! Your advice has helped me so much. Although I am pale, your advice on using gentle approach for the skin and your hyperpigmentation advice for melanin rich skin was exactly what made a difference for me. Not more or stronger! Gentle and consistent, I cannot thank you enough!
Thank you so much! I am thrilled that my videos have been helpful for you🥰
Same. I have hyperpigmentation due to psoriasis plaques in the past and I thought I was just stuck with them.
I watched this to confirm I was doing well with sunscreen and I am! Still this video is so informative and helpful!
I use the Trader Joe's on my face when I am running errands and under makeup. For gardening or outside chores the CVS dupe Moisturizing lotion SPF 50 for face and body which is under $10 for 8oz. Keeping it inexpensive will help ensure I apply enough. I wear my Vitamin C and Q10 antioxidants underneath.
Thanks. I'm happy you're on RUclips
😢I have been sunburned and it's no joke. Thank you for your lesson!
Thank you for the education and the reminder - sunscreen is so important.
Yes I've been using the trader joes sunscreen and it's amazing and affordable
Literally THE BEST!!! Everytime I go I get one!
It really is!
I love it sooooo much! And it makes my skin glow!
It's amazing AND it doesn't cost an arm and a leg! 😅
I bought one for my mom and was shocked, $5.99 for that is amazing!
So grateful for your expertise!!
I love these series!!
Im a white Mexican with a Brown mom in her 68 yrs old!
We have been applying your advice from your videos and her hyperpigmentation had better so much!! She is looking 50 these days.
❤
Thank you Doctor so much!!!
Sunscreen is truly a game changer FOR ALL SKIN TYPES 🎉
This was a great video!! Thank you for all the information and products listed!!
Hi Dr. Stephens, I love all your tips. Also, I hope your Mommy is doing great with her healing ❤️🩹
Thank you so much for all the information you offer to us. I have an actually looking into sunscreen for me and my family and I’m so happy that I came across this video today. Definitely going to look into getting some of your recommendations.
I keep a bottle of sunscreen at my desk and a travel size sunscreen in my purse. At work, I reapply sunscreen before I walk outside for lunch. My travel sunscreen comes in handy when I’m rushing and forget sunscreen in the morning.
🙌🏾
That's a great idea. Thanks
I should do that.
I am thankful for that Trader Joe's sunscreen.
My skin now looks even, and I like the way it looks on the skin.
I have older skin and the EltaMD UV Clear untinted is my favorite. The formula and niacinamide are helpful to the clarity of my skin. PS. I buy it when it's on sale and buy a couple of bottles at a time.
@@Nikitta43To the FDA, the actives in sunscreen are only those ingredients that help prevent skin cancer in products sold as sunscreens. The Niacinamide in this sunscreen improves skin, but is not approved as sunscreen (skin cancer prevention).
How do you get it on sale?
Most frequently, I order it from Lovely Skin when they do a frequent 20% discount. I’ve also ordered it through Dermstore and Skinstore. I now use their tinted version on my face and untinted on my neck.
@@susanmcf1 thank you so much!
As a 48 yr old South Asian woman, I didn't use sunscreen & am now dealing with hyperpigmrntation. I am religioudly using it now. I wish I had this information in my 20s.😢
Same here!!!
You made this content just in time!
Wow, thank you for sharing Dr. Alexis, I was struggling for a long time to seek a great sunscreen for myself and my kids. Thankfully, I watched your video, and I am considering some of your recommendations. These were some helpful tips on how important it is to wear sunscreen.
I like to put on the Supergoop Unseen SPF or the Trader Joe’s SPF as a base and then apply the summer Friday’s ShadeDrops on top and it’s perfection!
I guess this my sign to buy Elta MD I have been push it off since my Dermatologist recommended it to me because I love my Supergoop unseen. Thank you Dr. Alexis
Thank you Dr! I watched your old video on sunscreen for Black people, and it changed my life! I was wondering why I would go out and try to tan my face and body, and then returning back inside and seeing that my dark spots had gotten darker and not even with the rest of the complexion of my skin. since I’ve switched to a mineral sunscreen, I do not have this problem as much. ❤🙏🏽
I am so happy to hear that! Thanks so much for sharing🥰
Would love it if you would do a video on lasers and tools you have used on yourself and recommend for hyperpigmentation. Thank you!
You are truly doing the Lord’s work. These recommendations are fantastic. I use the elta md spf 46 tinted sunscreen but it’s not cheap. I work from home and I want to be more vigilant about reapplying my sunscreen so with your recommendations I think I’ll find a cheaper sunscreen to use for just re-applying while still using the EltaMD in my morning routine
Thank you soooo much Dr Stephens🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️You always come through with great recommendations. Also I didn’t know VaniCream made an SPF🤔I’m definitely going to grab that one. Thank you again🥳
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
i have that Differin moisturizer for the oilier summer months and it's really nice. I also love the Trader Joe's one which has come back in stock. Good recommendations! Thank you!
This was great I was searching your channel for sunscreen recommendations last month . Truly value your recommendations thank you
So glad I found you as a new esthetician I love to learn. Can you speak on over the counter vs medical grade skin care
She’s a dermatologist. Not an esthetician
i love your videos you make me so happy, just hearing about how to protect the skin for people of color
Love this❣️I check SPF’s to make sure they don’t have the cancer causing ingredients co.’s were told to take out of products.
Which ones are those ? Tell me so i can throw mine out !
This is great information. I always apply my sunscreen in the morning and forget later in the day because I work inside. I recently started after going to my dermatologist.
Summer Fridays sunscreen has my heart. It’s just the nicest, silkiest thing ever. No sting to the eyes, no cast, feels beautiful. ❤ Love your videos!
Ah back to Sephora I go. Eye stinking is the worse
Back at Sephora people are getting from allergies from this stuff
Really wanted to like it
What gives
@@christinemonte3477u have to try it for yourself.
Everyone's skin is different.
I have the Summer Fridays and it hasn't irritated or flared up my skin. Nor does it have a cast.
@@christinemonte3477 yeah everyone is different, but for me is has never been a problem. I have pretty reactive skin, and it’s never caused any issues. Plus, it’s mineral so it *should* be less irritating (and that’s been the case for me).
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’ve been asking questions to many about reapplication. You hit the hammer on the nail. One other question about reapplication. I see many reapplying sunscreen outside. Why is it that we have to wait at least 15-20 minutes on initial application of sunscreen but we can reapply while we’re outside?
Very helpful-thank you Dr. Alexis ❤
I use the Naturium sunscreen and I love it
This was so helpful, thank you!! 🌞
Thank you for this informative video. I fund it challenging to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, when I wear makeup. Will you do a video sharing tips for those of us that wear makeup. Specifically, tips on reapplying throughout the day.
I once used expired sunscreen and thought of using it until finish cuz only 1/4 left. girl it breaks me out. I throw it immediately 😂😂
never did i realize the my hyperpigmentation was exaterbated by sun exposure.i noticed when i exfolated the area would become lighter, then darken again. never wud i have thought it was b/c of not using sunscreen. i started using it daily along with faded, retionals, and lactic acid in a weekly routine. almost gone in 7 weeks!!!
Ive loved naturium, shisedo, and paulas choice for my deep skin. The shisedo wetforce prevented me from getting sunburnt at the pool!!
And I always used vitamin C with my sunscreen now
Great video! I find it really tricky to find sunscreens I can use around the eyes. I often use stick mineral sunscreens or lip sunscreens around the eyes, which seem to work and don't migrate as easily into the eyes. Another tricky place is the scalp! I was shocked to find sunburn in the part of my hair after a trip to Florida--literally the only place on my body I've ever been burned! Now I never leave the house without a hat!
I’m using sample size mineral sunscreen around my eyes right now that I got in the Meijer beauty box. They seems to be working for my very sensitive eyes.
Can you pleaseeeee do a video of putting and most importantly reapplying sunscreen while you have makeup on??
Hello Dr.Stephens, Thank you for this video. This helps me with sunscreen choices. I have SLE and lately, my skin has become very dry, so sunscreen and protective clothing are a must for me
Me! 👋🏽 I use spf 45 lip balm. I always randomly gift it to friends because no one ever thinks of it.
im worried about the tinted sunscreen not matching my complexion! thanks for getting the deepest color, i might have to do 1 shade above that. i love when professionals look just like me and understand me!!
Thank you for sharing. I will definitely try the MD Solar sunscreen.
So happy I discoverer your channel!
Thank you for watching 🥰
I just bought a sunscreen u recommend, the Elta MD 46. Love it❣️
Thank you !!!! I know i wish i could’ve been privy to this information when i was a teenager
Hi Dr. Stephens, thank you so much for this! Do you have any recommendations for good sunscreens for the body?
This was so helpful!
Thanks for this very informative video on Sunscreen. Heading to theme park with Grands & we all need this info.
Thank you for this! Reapply over makeup is so hard 😅. It moves my makeup or make my face look very oily after a few minutes.
Glad to see the Fenty, been wondering if the SPF was accurate, or if I have to layer more sunscreen on top of it. Will probably still try find a lightweight one for reapplication😊
Unrelated to this sunscreen video but I’ve been hearing a lot of things about Canesten Cream & Calendula cream for clearing acne . Could you do a video possibly about information on what these creams are ? I would so appreciate it 🤍
Could you please make an updated video on reapplying over makeup!!!????🩷
Your skin looks amazing
Thanks for this 😊 anyone else notice Differin didn’t spell “Absorb” correctly on the packaging? 🤭
Thank you for this!
Regarding the amount of sunscreen to use. I think the way people apply sunscreen is also an important factor. If someone measures out the right amount for just the face, but then rub the sunscreen in with the whole surface area of both hands considering that both hands is about 300cm2, basically means someone has 33% less on their face. So the more area someone used of their hands to apply the sunscreen, basically also the more product you need. For the face on average 600cm2, so 1.2 grams, but including those hands, it can be 900cm2, so 1.8 grams. Same when people review a sunscreen on one hand, if they then rub it in with their whole other hand, often also over the wrist what I often see, that is very unlikely the correct amount.
You are correct!
Exactly I've been recently thinking about this too! I apply my sunscreen with 3 fingers is that okay?
Super helpful! Thank you ❤
I use Evy technologies sunscreen spf 50g ++++ with blue light protection available here in Sweden. It is in a mousse formulation. Up to 5 hours protection.

Hi Dr Stephens, could you please do a video on peeling for dry skin? I notice that i got dry patches and it’s hard for my makeup to sit on my skin. I have seen lots of people having this issue too. Would appreciate your knowledge! ❤
Hi Dr. Stephens!! Hope all is well 🤗. Thanks so much for this video, it’s very helpful! I’m also looking for a good sunscreen for the body. Do you have any videos or recommendations for that? Thx again 🤗🤗
Thank for this video!!❤
Fantastic info, thank you
Thank you so much for always sharing this knowledge with us!
Could you also talk to us about sunscreen for children too? Sometimes I use black girl sunscreen for my 3 year old but I can also imagine that some of the ingredients are too mature for her skin
They have a kids formula in spray and cream form.
Always good to see you Dr. Alexis.I have three sunscreens I use for different situations: Vanicream with ceramides when needs a break, Glowscreen because it has a tint; usually use when I'm going out and want a shine, Vanicream with ceramides moisturizer with 30 when I'm on a run. I like having options so I never leave the house without sunscreen😊
Awesome information Doc !! I love the Trader Joe one and it's affordable. Can you please a video on the best moisturizer for the summer. It way too hot for the heavy creams. Thanks😀
On it!🥰

Dr Stephens do you have advice for reapplying sunscreen when you’re wearing makeup?
Love this video! Do you still recommend the pipette mineral sunscreen? Ive been using it since you compared it to biossance sunscreen
Thank you for this ❤
Very helpful information and much needed! I think we often forget that sunscreen is a drug and not a cosmetic. This Vanicream moisturizer SPF is wonderful on the daily! It isn’t too shiny, but it is moisturizing enough for those with normal to dry skin. I used to have a really hard time with mineral SPF, because over the course of the day my skin will dry out. I have used altruist SPF 50 that I purchase on Amazon UK and this is another really wonderful option for dry and sensitive skin. I would really love to know your thoughts on the new Neutrogena mineral UV tint. There are darker shades, and even one light enough for us very fair people and it is an excellent sunscreen! I haven’t worn foundation in years, but recently, I have wanted to wear something sheer and Hydrating. This is like a perfect tinted moisturizer for me.
Thank so much for sharing!
Never realized I should be using tinted over transparent! Thank you.
Can you do a video on lip sunscreen for those with sensitive skin (prone to dermatitis)?
