It stuck with me too! It brings you back to being a child with that primal fear engrained in you, and as the viewer its gut wrenching to go back to that feeling and witness it. It really lurks beneath your skin during and after the movie. 10/10

The doll cloaked in the car as a dark inscrutable 'absence of light' and then being replicated visually in the landscapes over the movie duration. The house being upside down in the titles as a clue, the number of triangular shapes placed behind the protagonists head throughout the movie.
The passenger perspective in the car is the 'dolls perspective' its the 'devils perspective'

The opening is easily the best part of the movie. In hindsight, I feel like my viewing experience was riding the high of that intro through Part 1, sitting through Part 2 excited to see it reach that high again, realizing it wouldn't, then Part 3 came and I was just grumpy that such a perfect opening was wasted on a film that was willing to murder its own mystery for the sake of making its climax understandable for anyone who had slept through the first hour

    • @notmyrealpseudonym6702
      @notmyrealpseudonym6702 2 месяца назад

Not really. If you consider the implications of LH being suppressed to not be able to see LL even when he is around, him having to leave indexical signs of his presence for her to become aware (the letters, the dolls, the murders), him setting her up with his well executed plan (including when he would first be revealed to her by determining when he is 'caught') so she would eventually have a 'self revelation' about her true child hood ... and then while still reeling from that be forced to make a choice between 2 forms of evil (kill mum and be murder or observe mum killing and be complicit in the death of an innocent (young girl)). The implications of the end ... continue post movie. Much like in 7 when Brad Pitt's character's fate is revealed fresh 'from the box' and he has to determine suddenly if he is a innocent victim and take it or a sinner and embody wrath. He shifts roles from hero of a thrilling story to tragic avenger (revenge) and you realise the story behind the story.

I have been waiting for someone to talk about the opening scene for the last 4 days. Im writing this now in hopes that you realized what i realized. I will edit after the video.
The edit after- There was something I was hoping you spoke on, AND YOU DID, but you were wrong. You said the camera view is from us (the audience) while the car is driving up to the house. Other reviews say it introduces a supernatural element halfway into the movie, they were also wrong. The supernatural element was present from the first shot of the opening scene. I'll explain.
    1) Satan inhabits the dolls whether it's via the metallic orbs or the dark veil. We know this because the demon face is revealed when the veil is over the dolls and the eyes go red. Keep this in mind it's very important for the opening scene.
    2) Satan can NOT physically act, he can only influence.
    3) The orb emits sounds (demonstrated by the medical examiner) which we "the viewers" hear as frequencies, but these frequencies actually speak to a specific individual on a more intimate level. The medical examiner saying he heard it whispering his ex wife's name, for example.
Now with these reference points I'll breakdown the opening scene from the car ride until we first see a young Lee Harker.
Red is a color symbolic of danger, you are right about that, but red plays another part in the opening scene.
AT A GLANCE: The very first shot is some text with a Red background, We transition into the car ride with that same red background bleeding into the shot. Our view is from the front passenger side of the car. There are a couple of dark creases to the right of our view inside the car. We come to a stop and the camera turns toward the house then focuses or zooms in to the open windows of the house. The next shot is of young Lee sitting in front of that windows. The appearance of young Lee is accompanied by a hum, reminiscent of the orb's frequencies, which stops when Lee looks up and out toward the car.
THE REALITY: The text on the Red background goes away as we transition into the car ride seeing through Satan's Red eyes via Lee's doll. The dark creases to the right of the screen belong to the veil over the doll. Longlegs comes to a stop and Satan focuses on Lee through her window. Within the first 1½ seconds of seeing Lee we hear the hum which is being emitted from the metallic orb in the doll on the passenger seat by Satan. The hum immediately stops when it has drawn Lee's attention. Lured or "influenced" by Satan to come outside while Longlegs takes his position to make his move.
The supernatural element was present from the first shots of the film.
Thank you for reading. Watch this scene again realizing this and please let me know if it makes you feel different about the opening scene or entire movie in general.

The idea of solving a murder where the killer never enters the house sounded too good to be true for me so I had a feeling there would be a cop out. The twist of him living with the family was also a cool touch and I am still trying to think of there was a way to incorporate that without using “Satanic amnesia” as an excuse.

The opening scene was beautiful in every way. The rest of the film was a major dissapointment for me as i find the devil/satan a bit of a cop out. Humans are the ones who cause the most evil so really think they could have gone somewhere with that instead.
I also felt we saw too much of longlegs in the end. I liked seeing him through the camera in the interrogation scene before Harker goes in. Lost me when we saw all of him for so long. Then doubly lost me with it was all the devil! Each to their own of course!

I will say one thing that brought me out of the film in that scene, and it's because I grew up in a rural area similar to the places pictured. Multiple times the haunting call of a Loon is heard..... they're a migratory bird, and are most certainly NOT present when the snow falls.... I get the sound is what they were after, but I think they should have picked a different sound.... it held back what could have been a perfect scene.

I just saw it today. I liked it a lot but took a turn which i believe it didn’t benefit the potential i hoped for. I think i am to blame for my disappointment because of the amount of critics i read about it, got my hopes too high. Also the marketing campaign the studio put up for this made it look as something different.
On a different note, i ja e to disagree with you, the lack of OST made me not feel emotions i needed to have in this. Overall its a good movie and nick did a great job. Now i need a longlegs origin story.

Scary sure, but not a classic. You got the feeling that the only rational and ‘human’ character was agent Carter. I’m sure the goal was to intentionally distance the audience from the characters, and it worked. But it keeps the film from having any kind of memorable impact.
