I had an art teacher take us to the Natural History Museum on a field trip, and our assignment was to pick 5 things from any section to draw. I chose a gemstone, a snake skeleton, a dinosaur, a tarantula, and an owl. Best teacher ever and I miss her so much.
You should totally go to the Spy Museum if it's open. Lots of really cool stuff there.
Your choice of items to draw reminds me a little of a greeting card I gave to a girlfriend in high school. It said on the front, "I've made up my mind, I want you I need you it has to be you you you!" and on the inside it said, "If I can't have you I want an owl or a dirigible."
A funny story about the two dinosaurs Battle of the ages. About 67 million years ago, two iconic dinosaurs, a Triceratops horridus and a Tyrannosaurus rex, died and were quickly buried together side by side in a single grave. And both of them bear battle scars. So it was assumed that they had a battle but it's really not known if they actually did. Sorry the paleontologist in me pops out every now and then
Good point! For all we know they were best buddies happy to be together forever, By the way, now that we know that a lot of dinosaurs, especially theropods, had feathers, it occurs to me that movies may have their vocalizations all wrong. In profile a Tyrannosaurus looks rather like a modern psittacine, or basically like a parrot especially in the shape of its head. So maybe instead of roaring like a lion they squawked and could be taught to say things like, "Awk! Rexy wanna herbivore!"
P
I am going there for a field trip that a teacher created, thx so much for the tips!
It's a good thing the orange statues were put in after Night at the Museum II
I wish I could visit all the museums.
When I was at that museum in July of 2018 there was a thunderstorm that there was only one crack of thunder and made people awe
Felt so homesick during your tour! I worked in that building for twenty years and would go wandering about looking at exhibits in detail every time I came in early for work. Watched the fish and brittle stars in that little reef aquarium. Looked on as one of the entomologists opened the hatch near the top and reached his arm down into one of the insect "rooms" to drop in some food. Wandered at leisure through the gems & minerals area (I was never that impressed by the Hope Diamond -- but the Dom Pedro Aquamarine is an absolute stunner -- I'm sorry you didn't give us a glimpse of that one as well). Roamed through that Objects of Wonder exhibit for hours, cumulatively speaking. By the time I'd seen or at least strolled past every item on display, something would have changed or been added somewhere. It is, I maintain, literally impossible to see every exhibit in every Smithsonian museum (there are several off the Mall, including the Postal Museum near Union Station, the Anacostia Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery / National Museum of American Art, not to mention the Cooper Hewitt up in New York City) in one's lifetime.
Just two tidbits: that elephant in the Rotunda is affectionately called Henry. If you noticed the little taxidermied field mouse next to the deer in the Mammals hall, and the donor's name, Thomas Shaw -- that was actually Tommy, who caught and killed the mouse; he was the cat of one of the librarians in the Natural History branch of the Smithsonian Libraries. And the epidemic exhibit was up long before COVID -- only the COVID panel is new.
Such wonderful memories. I miss the place dearly.
That sounds absolutely fabulous ...I'm jealous! Must have been amazing for you...yes I am truly jealous!!!
@@tonib.3016 Now that I'm retired, believe me, I miss the place a *lot*.
@J.J. Markin I can only imagine...but you've got good memories about it. That's priceless!!!
It’s been awhile since I’ve been to the Natural History Museum, but I have a VERY clear memory of that epidemic exhibit. It was super dark and eerily quiet, except for the occasional hacking cough sound effect coming through the speakers. Like I said, it’s been years, so I may be remembering it wrong , but man that was an unsettling room!
Those orange statues look like they’re 3D printed. You can tell by the layers of material that’s built up.
definately are, shame they're ugly. The idea was there
3D printing is pretty cool.
Man, I totally MISS going to museums right now.😢
Nice TMBG Mammal call out!
Thanks you my friend see you soon
Check out the postal museum ...cool Beans! It's by Union Station.
Thanks Jacob!
Some very cool taxidermy.
Jacob you're heading down through VA? Come visit Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown settlement sites.
I recommend a visit to the smithsonian national zoo.
I appreciate this man so much!
nice place you got
Have you ever stopped in Frederick, MD?
The Tasmanian devil is actually dying off in Australia because of a horrible facial cancer growth and they face extinction because there is no cure. But if you watch Bondi Vet-The Australian Zoo has a breeding program going on and are working with scientists to see if they can figure out how to save them.
National Archives!!! Pretty, pretty please!
Always wanted to go there
CB, Man ive been watching your vids for a long time. You have an inviting personality. Love u man!
In my opinion, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is the best museum in Washington, DC. Favorite museum that I really wanted to visit for a long time
This is the only Smithsonian museum I have seen, back in grade school we took a field trip to Washington DC and it was amazing. Thank you for giving me nostalgia Jacob, I want to visit again soon!!! Thanks for giving me ideas for my future trip too! I wish I could stumble upon the Carpetbagger, I’ll be on the look out for the hat and croc combo!
Looks like an amazing museum where you can learn a lot! I like the big focus on teaching about the importance of protecting animals, nature and the environment, and it's also great that it's free entrance so that it's accessible for everyone!
"I really like this one. I like that she's kissing a fish."
Hahaha cracked me up I love carpetbagger
Visit the museum where they have Dorothy ruby slippers from wizard of Oz please
Jacob is very well spoken and his narrative is first class. This was a fascinating trip💛💜
My husband and I go every year. We live in VA and take the metro in. So fun!
I always enjoy touring museums. So much to see, read and learn. Thank you for posting your visit.
Love the natural history museum... great place! I prefer the one in NYC but either way, I could spent hours there
A great tour
So much to do, so much to see. Jacob, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play . . . you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid.
Gosh, it's been 20 years since I've been to DC. Enjoy your visit...
Hey Jacob the air and space museum is currently being renovated and it’s gonna be closed for a long time .
Also thought u might want to know that there is a second air and space museum it’s in Chantilly Virginia and it’s open to the public not sure if it’s currently being renovated buts it’s worth looking into I was there to end it’s amazing so u should check it out tc
Thanks for the tour. 👍
Hey I would just like to thank you for having a new video basically every night. Gives me comfort and something to do. You are my favorite RUclipsr
You should visit the spy museum, it's not far from the National Mall.
I like to see the Art Museums and the Indian Museum
Been there. Love the Smithsonian
So am looking forward to visiting the Smithsonian :)
My mom and I went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History 7 years ago. BTW, I found out about a state park in Arkansas where you can actually dig for diamonds. It is called Crater of Diamonds State Park. Maybe you can visit there sometime.
There is also a Garnet Mine right outside of Lake George NY where you can mine for garnets. Not as precious as a diamond though
I went to Washington DC when i was 12 and this brought so many memories back. They had just brought in the giant squid when i was there. I also remember the Hope diamond and all of the artifacts as well. Hard to imagine that was 40 years ago. Thank you for this video carpetbagger! ❤
Since the main Air and Space museum is closed, if you can get out to Dulles, the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air and Space museum is fantastic.
i’d love to see you visit the American Indian Museum
If you like giant ground sloths and you find yourself near Dayton Ohio, there's one at the Boonshoft Museum.
There is actually a giant squid in one of London’s museums - I think it’s the Natural History Museum, but can’t be sure.
this one video contains some of the most important objects in human history. awe-inspiring
My second favorite Smithsonian museum ( Air and Space is first)! There are 19 Smithsonian Museums in Washington alone !By the way, many people use the regional pronounciation of “WaRshington” even though there is no “R” in “ Washington”!
My grandparents used to take me to the air and space museum. We loved it! So much fun and memories
The Air & Space Museum is one of the places where you can touch a sliver of a moon rock.
lol my nana always adds an R in any "wash" word, she pronounces washcloth as warshcloth
@@emulyrose5353 That’s a regional usage! Lots of Western PA ( yeah, Pittsburgh) and Tristan’s area!
I thought 70?
Hi Jacob.I honestly didn't think I'd like this video but I.Did! Thsnk YOU
Stay Safe and God Bless from Tammy in PA and
I got that They Might Be Giants reference! Nice!
Also, I going to start referring to bad drivers as "big lump of bull bones".
You HAVE to visit the American History museum!! They have Archie Bunkers chair, Lucy's polka-dot dress, Louis Armstrongs trumpet, lots of great stuff!!
Also the National Archive museum is great too! They have the actual Declaration of Independence!
Wish i woulda caught you while you were here!! Hope you had a good time in DC
i have never heard anyone butcher the names of our ancestors in the way you do, LOVE IT! Thanx for this video Jakob
As someone studying to become an evolutionary anthropologist, I was cringing the whole time haha!
OMG my dream place I want to visit every one of the museums there so badly! I'm so looking forward to this video thank you so much for sharing everything you do 💖💖💖💖💖💖
I'll take you .. when you wanna go?
Same!
The Carpetbagger 👍👏👏
This was fun.
Te Papa museum in Wellington, New Zealand has a colossal squid on display! Only one in the world I believe. I saw it a few years ago and it was absolutely huge.
How do you post so much so fast with moving from place to place? Wow! You are our hero!
I think he's actually several people who just look alike. Actually, if I grew muttonchops and got a pair of crocs and the right hat I might be able to pass. Jacob is missing out on a profit center here. He should sell a Carpetbagger Cosplay Kit. Imagine a hundred Carpetbaggers descending on the same haunted house next Halloween! That would be scary!
To be picky (and in case nobody else mentioned this yet), the Hindenburg wasn't a blimp but a rigid airship, and I speak as one of your Patreon supporters helping keep your dirigible in the air!
Museum of American history should be next with the movie and television memorabilia. Also seeing the pandas at the zoo always a plus.
Love all of your videos
Stay safe
So glad you’re a TMBG fan :)
ty for sharing these videos i always learn something new
Please do the postal museum.
as a birdman hearing about why the passenger pigeons went extinct had me upset like why? awesome video btw.
Thank you so much I was here when I was little and you brought back memories for me and it was just super special. I would have been okay with watching you walk thru this place for hrs :)
Hey! Welcome to D.C.! Museum of Natural History is one of my favorite museums. Fun fact, the dog in the last exhibit used to move when you press the flea button. Also, If I remember correctly when you walked in the orkin exhibit, you used to be able to hear the different sounds of insects. Hope you enjoy your time here!
Sent you a list some time ago of museums and attractions. Hope to see some of them here soon.
I’ve always wanted to visit here. Thank you for showing me all the things.
Awesome and amazing and I like this is amazing and I love this my name is Craig king I come from Pembrokeshire south west wales in uk
Great! I've been to New South Wales but never the original despite spending a fair amount of time in the UK over the decades.
This has been one of my favorite museums since I was a kid!!
Natural History that you showed in this vlog was my lst choice so glad you covered that. Maybe the SM of Transportation
I absolutely love your content...so interesting to me! One thing you could do that I would be so appreciative of...flash just for a second or 2 on the accompanying plaques to the exhibits you are filming...we here watching could hit pause and read the information... that would be just fabulous!!! I'll never get to go to these places dammit. I envy you...thanks for bringing us to them...just fantastic!
Your videos always help when I'm depressed i wish I could go do stuff like this more thank you for taking me on your adventures
Awesome video! Thanks for the tour
This was so great. You would have been a great natural scientist. Side note, if there is a college elective about folk history, you would be such an awesome professor
The Museum of American History has had some pretty neat updates lately. You should check it out.
Wow I'd love to see this place and wander for hours. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for sharing this amazing tour video. I really want to visit there someday!
This is awesome. I can't wait to see where you visit next.
Yo! I think this is going to be my favorite Carpetbagger episode!
I live in Richmond, VA and don't go up to DC often bc of traffic. 95 into DC is hell. However, you've renewed my interest. Great video!
It’s a challenge
Parking in DC is a problem too. I suggest taking a train. From Richmond to Washington the one-way fare is just $22, but it departs really early. A coach seat on Amtrak is nicer than first class in a plane.
If you're in decent shape it's not that long a walk from Union Station to the Mall, and alternatively you can take the Metro, though it's less direct than you might expect. Or just take a cab; they're not too expensive.
Hello Jacob thanks for another cool video ☀️ absolutely love your channel and always makes my day when a notification comes through 💖 Thanks again and best wishes ✨
Here are the absolutes that, IF you are ON limited time that you MUST see (no order):
Air & Space
American History
Natural History
National Archives
The Castle (I agree - it's a great "sampler" and initial guide)
These are the minimums....I've been to Washington DC and each time for about 1.5 weeks. It took 3 visits to see JUST about everything that I wanted to - this included museums, monuments, famous buildings (these require reservations via your Congress person) and MORE.
ONe of the places everyone forgets to see is Ford's Theater (where Lincoln was shot)....and yes, it's within walking distance. Some monuments are a bit far away and you need to take a tour bus to go see them...but do it. Take a tour to go see Washington at night...it's beautiful. As I say, it took 3 visits of 1.5 weeks EACH to see it all! Go see the Zoo...especially if you've never seen a LIVE Panda....Did I mention most of this stuff is FREE? Go see the SPY museum..it's not free...but's awesome. The "Newseum" was incredible but I believe sadly it closed -which is sad because it was FANTASTIC.
And if you have time and are heading back West on your way home - stop in Virginia to see the Air & Space ANNEX (Edvar Hazy annex)..it's AS GOOD as the main Air and Space frankly....
Warning : Do NOT bring a car to Washington DC - there IS NO PLACE TO PARK...ANYWHERE. Find a Metro STATION and ride in for the day and then ride out. It's safe, clean, and pleasant.
I'm headed there in a couple weeks, solo, from Cali for 3 days, I'm going to heed your suggestions. Thanks
I love this so much been there back in the 90s so awesome can't wait until tomorrow 💐💐💐
Beautiful museum, would love to visit looks amazing, Thankyou for taking me around Jacob
Because of an injury I'm not getting around as well a I used to, so I travel vicariously thanks to Jacob!
I Loved this tour & your commentary was entertaining & informational ! Thank you !
Hey Jacob here is the second air and space museum it’s amazing they have a blackbird and a space shuttle and I won’t tell everything cause I want u to be surprised also they filmed transformers there the blackbird is also a deception and he wakes up and blows the hangar door off in the movie .
F. Udvar-Hazy Center
Museum in Fairfax County, Virginia
man that looks amazing.....that would be so cool too see that oneday.
I grew up in southern MD about 35 minutes away from DC and we had plenty of school field trips to the different smithsonian museums!! I feel lucky to live so close to so much history and cool things to see.
28:10 I’m down to try some Mammoth Jerky
Very cool. I love the place. My daughter is a teacher and she woks at the Natural History Museum.
There's a National Aquarium in Baltimore. I loved the American Indian museum. Went there about 10 years ago.
I am going to totally love this series of vlogs. Cannot wait for more.
Look at Jacob's older stuff too. It's a shame my single favorite video is only visible to his Patreon supporters. It runs just 2 minutes and in it he goes to see the film "It, Chapter 2" in a strange movie theater accessed via an underground hallway that's decorated to look spooky, and as he walks along filming he's suddenly scared into a horrified scream by the appearance of what proves to be a very cute female version of Pennywise, who gives him a peppermint. That's the video in which he reveals a very important tip about visiting haunted house or the like. "Remember," he says, "they can't jump scare you in the restroom."
@@DGaryGrady I have probably seen most of his videos, that I can watch. But I do love a museum.
Wow...😮...I'm overwhelmed by all the incredibly awesome stuff...💯✔ Just simply amazing and so fascinating...👍🏼
My first time (well second time, but I was baby and don’t remember it) in D.C was back in summer of 2015. I remember one of the African American museums was still under construction so we weren’t able to visit it but we did got to the museums of natural history, air & space, and the Native American museum while stopping at each of the monuments along the way. It was pretty fun, we went to the Hard Rock for lunch. Would like to go back to finally see the other museum and see any potential new exhibits as well. I think we did visit a couple of other museums but I don’t remember which ones. I also remember visiting the shrine and walking past the White House. Then we went to George Washington’s home, which is Mount Vernon. Then we just visited family friends in Maryland.
Oh cool dude. It was my favorite place to go when I was a kid . Thanks for the great content .
They Might be Giants! Always the perfect museum soundtrack. ;)
You said you wanted to pet a porcupine. Wild Acres in McHenry Miss has encounters where you can. They love belly rubs. Went there with my wife last weekend. Very fun!
