Former Patients Allege Gynecologist Sexually Assaulted Them

- Former patients of a Utah gynecologist say their doctor shattered their trust. They say for decades Dr. Broadbent preyed upon young vulnerable members of the local Mormon community, subjecting them to painful and unnecessary examinations for his pleasure. In total, 94 women teamed up to sue Dr. Broadbent. But to their shock, the judge dismissed the lawsuit. Now, they are appealing the case. Dr. Broadbent has not been charged and denies all the allegations. However, while officials continue investigating, he has agreed to stop practicing. Inside Edition’s Lisa Guerrero has more.
Every exam I’ve had with a male doctor, a female nurse has always been present. I live in Michigan so I don’t know what the protocol is for everywhere else but I am 42 years old almost and I have never had a Pap smear performed by a male gynecologist without a female present, this is horrific.
This what I was thinking.....I guess some states don't require it
Same but I also live in Michigan so maybe that's jus our laws here.
Same for me
i live in michigan too its just the laws i think
I do not live in Michigan.
Women should be seen by female doctors when possible or at least have a female present.
Thank you for this comment! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yeah I agree.
not even female presence.. just find a female doctor
That sounds great until you realize that a female can SA another female. Obviously the possibility of that happening is way lower (a very good thing) it's still possible. Sadly there will never be a time where this won't happen again, even if the specialist isn't male.
Sounds good until you remember that a female can SA another female or be complicit and do nothing if a male were to do the exact same thing.
As a woman i request female doctors for EVERYTHING
Yes, I am the same. That's just me and my preference. I am a woman and I feel like a woman would know and understand my body better than any man! Plus I wouldn't feel comfortable to have a male doctor for that department. It's very saddening and sick that they had to experience that. For the lawyers or anyone else to tell them differently about their experiences is disgusting!

As a male I demand a heterosexual Male Doctor for the same reason.
94 WOMEN?! How is this not making headlines across the country? This is insane. Something needs to happen. Any woman living in the area that guy works in probably is terrified of having a baby
second, how is the court dismissing a case that has 94 alleged victims, so much for serving justice
It’s serial…
It's false. A bunch of women getting together for a very rich quick scheme.
How could the judge dismiss 94 women statements. Baffles me. What kind of judge is that.
@traybern I dont understand your question.
I've mostly had female gynos, except for one time I went to a major hospital in South Korea and I had to be seen by a male doctor, THREE female nurses accompany him. I've never been against male gynecologists, but I've always wondered, what makes a man want to be a gynecologist in the first place?
Fr wth
I go out of my way to have female doctors, equally competent, but less danger...
This happened to my grandmother and her friend in the 80s in Kentucky. He's dead now, both of them were unaware of what an exam entailed and essentially kept quiet. They didn't know they both went through the same experience until they were in their 40s and spoke about their experiences to each other one day. I will NEVER go to a male Dr for gynecology for this reason. I know they aren't all like this but I'm not taking a chance.
For the case to be dismissed is disgusting. The judicial system in UTAH has failed ALL of these women!!!
This is exactly why I do not trust male gynecologists. These poor women and that unborn baby, I pray they find peace and comfort
Pretty prejudice don't you think?

@@jwill5892maybe, but that’s sadly how you have to be in this world. Same thing with women handling male patients. It’s the opposite sex touching your body for crying out loud. Not saying it can’t happen with same sex doctors, but it’s definitely more likely with the opposite sex
@@cybersantics5092I understand but unfortunately you can still be violated by the same sex no matter how many precautions you take you will never be 100% safe

As a guy I REALLY hate how that Doctor handled these woman. Its men like this that gives every other men a bad reputation.
He's also a prime example of why people think men shouldn't be gynecologists. When people ask women why they don't feel comfortable with a male doctor, they'll point to him
@@user-th9fv5hn1z It used to be the case that almost all of the gynecologists were men when it became a formal field of medicine an women started seeing them instead of midwives for fertility issues. Just imagine what they could've gotten away with or did get away with back then!
This incident happened at another college too. A part-time male ob-gyn had to testify with a medical perspective because he knew the doctor was in the wrong and needed help patients of the college. As a child I was inappropriately touched by my paediatrician. At that time I had no knowledge of how a medical examination is done but it felt very uncomfortable and I cried but could not confront my parents. But what happened still stayed with me for years. I am 28 now and it still hurts a lot. I wish I had known what he did to me was not a medical examination but his perverted attack.
same. I was 23 when I learned children under 12 don't get pap smears. My mother left me alone with my pediatrician for checkups for 2 years because he was a family friend. Out of all the specialists a doctor could be, I’ve always found it sus that men would choose gynecology. Seriously? What’s their reasoning? 🤔
Exactly; I'm a guy, but if I was as women I would never married a gynecologist husband 💀
When my cousin did medical school rotations to pick a specialty, he said many people liked the OB-GYN rotation the best. Delivery/birth aspect seemed to draw people in as a baby was coming into the world. Also, a lot of the people seemed to like the gay male gynecologist who taught them.
I don't get it either. Like, why not become a urologist instead?

Thats not how that works, the supreme court cant reopen a civil lawsuit, they could sue again but no telling that would be any diffrent.
I've gone to a male doctor before for a pelvic issue and he INSISTED that a female nurse be present the entire time. This should be standard

I don’t understand why any woman would have a male gynecologist unless he’s the only one in town (which could definitely be the case here). After a male GP gave me a breast exam that didn’t seem particularly clinical (and he complimented me during it), I chose female doctors going forward. The doctor featured here isn’t the first to predate on Mormon women, so they should be especially cautious.
Edit: I want to add that I don’t fault any woman who has no choice in the matter NOR any woman who is SA’ed when she did. I’m just saying the risk of that happening is exponentially higher with a male.
A few patients said they went there as walking distance from campus.
I have a female doctor and it's not any more better secure or safe.... l feel very let down by health care so called professionals!
I've always had them done by a male physician, and they also always had a chaperone present. Over the years, I've heard far and away more horror stories about women OB/GYNs than male ones, FWIW.
Even one doctor doing something like this is one too many.
I have military medical care. It's predominantly males and we don't have a choice.
@@breezeh1127I feel so bad for you omg
Disgusting that he was able to assault so many women whilst being a physician. There needs to be tougher penalties on both male and female physicians found guilty. Creepy Drs shouldn't get any second chances!
Here in Malaysia, any male Dr is always accompanied by a female nurse during exam/procedure.
In Florida too.a female was always in the room with me.
That’s been my experience in two US states.
Patients at this place said he normally had a nurse in the room. Still didn’t help.
With one of my pregnancies the gynecologist was so rough it punchered my uterus and broke the amniotic sack. It didn't end well. I never felt pain during an exam like that before. Always, always have a witness during anything exam dealing with these types of things. If the Dr says no thats a red flag
Something similar happened to me. I contacted attorneys right away to sue and no one would take the case. I even reported him to the medical board and nothing happened and now I am told it’s past the statute of limitations. I wish I could find someone who would take my case on so that other women can be protected.
That’s so aggravating. I hate that no one can relate and take things like this seriously. It’s scarring.
We had to go to him once. And he told me to stay outside. I said no I’m coming in and my wife also said. And at that time we left and found another another doctor for her that she is way more comfortable with.
i’m so sorry that happened to you❤
This is why I rather have a female doctor always!!!
Female doctors know the pain more and have more empathy and will listen to women. The male doctors be like: ‘oh it’s just the common [problem] , probably your period or hormones.. so here take some medicines and you won’t have pain anymore and everything will be resolved!’ And then few months later turns out to be a cyst or cancer LOLOLOL. It's very telling that 90 women have come forward, even in one of the most conservativly religious cities in the country, where many women probably feel ashamed to speak out. Within LDS culture there's a popular notion that if a woman doesn't do something to stop her assault, if she doesn't cry out, then she bears some responsibility. The true number of victims is very likely much higher than 90. My heart aches for Provo and the sisters who have been hurt.
I have no idea where that "notion" came from as it isn't doctrine and isn't taught to anyone base on LDS belief. I would be first in line to blow the whistle, but I'm not a quiet woman around injustice.
Man this makes me grateful for my own doctor… it’s a woman who is very kind and understanding listens to all my concerns. She never once has ever tried abusing me. Crazy that this is something that apparently people need to look out for 😢
Have you noticed that a lot of these stories come out of Utah.
That state is practically run by the LDS church. I have family in Utah and even they hate how the it is run there.
