  • Jennifer Magnano was killed by her husband Scott Magnano in 2007 at their Connecticut home after years of physical and emotional abuse, including coercive control. The murder was witnessed by two of her three children. Now they're all fighting to get a law titled Jennifer’s Law passed in her name. The law seeks to include coercive control in the definition of abuse in the court system in order to protect women and children. #InsideEdition

@Mel B if a woman flees with her children, she is seen as “kidnapping” her kids and a court will often temporarily give the other spouse custody, before she can even testify. It’s awful, they should be allowed to present proof of abuse before custody is decided.

As soon as I heard the court gave him custody of 2 kids and she had to go back to Connecticut to fight for them, I knew the court had just as much blame for her death. Especially after one of the kids had already filed the complaints of sexual abuse. What a way to completely let down a family.

I went to the police, got protection orders, provided the court with recordings where he threatened to kill me. The judge ruled we should share custody and he has to pick up our baby from my house. He justified it by saying he showed interest by buying stuff for our baby, even though he didn't visit or show any interest for the first 7 months and only showed interest after I sued him for custody. Justice truly is blind.

The court failed because we have a broken justice system. The first time this happened should have been the trigger for her to carry out a plan to leave him. I understand that a person can tolerate all sorts of abuse inflicted on themselves for all sorts of psychological reasons, but so often in these situations the limit is reached when the children become the target. I get it that when the children were young she tried to balance his anger with her love... but once the sexual abuse started... nope, she should have risked their lives to leave rather than facilitate that abuse

The only thing I came up with is perhaps he had threatened her (his mom) too. Maybe he told her that he'd kill her too if she allowed the police to search her basement apartment. I'm to the point now where I hope that she was in fear of her own life as sad as that may sound because it means that she at least was in fear of her own life and not just a horrible human hiding her son knowing he was about to kill his wife in front of her children.

This is killing me because my mom and her five kids (including me) had to escape from my physically abusive dad in the middle of the night. Luckily (unlike this poor family) my mom had money so we packed up the car while he was at work and drove a week through Canada until we got to Las Vegas. That was 11 years ago and I haven’t seen him since. This reminds me of how bad it could’ve gotten. I’m so sorry this happened to this family.

He threatened to come home and kill us all when he got home from his hunting trip, my mom had been planning to leave for months but was scared and at the time she was rekindling with my step father (we just call him dad) who was in our lives 10 years prior but life separated them(they were both active duty military.) but he helped my mom pack the whole house into the car and his truck and we left that night and never looked back. He never raised his voice at us, he never yells, he really stepped up when mine and my brothers dad died unexpectedly. He walked me down the isle and always answers when I call! The moment the Grandmother refused to allow entry into her unit (which is still apart of the property)... the police should have remained on site to ensure the family's safety.

Unfortunately I highly doubt the police had enough officers to keep someone there all night. My mom recently went through a divorce with my violent father and I absolutely won’t be letting him in the house to get his stuff without a police escort. I made her stay somewhere else during the divorce hearing and I never wanted her to be alone with him after they had filed for divorce but she kept letting him in, kept letting him stay with her, kept going out and meeting him in private willingly. Can’t believe he didn’t do worse than he did as many times as she let him in.

Don't forget the the police has the authority enter by any means necessary, but they chose not too knowing full well the grand mother was hiding the father inside.

@@MissPotential. Uhhh, dunno about that. That’d be unreasonable search and seizure, I believe. Sounds like her residence, though within the house, was considered an “apartment” and as such was considered the mother’s residence, not the family’s. I may be wrong about this, as I’m certainly no legal expert, but it sounds like that was probably the case.
